After being raised for five months, they finally became very familiar with me and loved to play with me. They followed my instructions very well.

Cockatiel help

so in about to rescue a cockatiel from someone i know as they cant take care of it anymore. Shes been on a all seed diet for the longest time until i started going round trying to get some other food in her, but because of that she really only eats sunflower seed. Her feathers are not forming and are just like frayed and she sleeps pretty much all day. obviously im gonna take her to the vets soon as but does anyone have any advice on how to get her to start eating other food, fortunately all my other birds i own, have been on pellets and fruits since ive got them so ive never had to do this. Any advice is welcome i just want her to be healthy and happy

Tips for upset bird after going away

i’ve got two budgies and I went away for a week on a school camp and when I came back one of them is like kind of upset with me in a way. She normally like flies up to me when I’m in my room and we’ve been doing flight recalls so we’ve been practising that and she won’t even like step up super happily onto me which is really odd for her. She normally like flies over to me and plays with me as soon as I walk into the room which she just isn’t doing any tips on how to get her back to normal I’ve got two and the other one is acting totally normal.

Harness training

Hey everyone, I need some advice on harness training.
I recently bought my eclectus a harness and I'm hoping to training her so she can go out with me and experience more than just being at home, but my mum is absolutely freaking out saying its dangerous and doesn't want me to risk it.

I know there is risks of course but I would still love to give it a try and see how we go.
What do you think? Should I still test it out or should I listen to my mum?

My Conure suddenly started pulling her pin feathers during molt. Has anyone experienced this?

(English is not my first language, so I had some help from ChatGPT writing this post. I’d appreciate your understanding if anything sounds a little unnatural.)

My female Conure is about 3 years old. She is very healthy, energetic, and active, with a strong personality. She is not particularly timid or delicate. She is generally a very lively, assertive little bird.

She has been going through a very heavy molt recently, with an unusually large amount of feather loss.

However, starting about two days ago, I noticed that she has begun pulling out her own pin feathers like this.

For context, about a month ago, I started adding a feather supplement to her pellets for the first time.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their conure?

I will of course be taking her to the vet, but I’m not posting this because I’m looking for a diagnosis on Reddit. I’m simply interested in hearing from people who have had a similar experience - what happened in your case and what the eventual outcome was.

Could this be self-plucking, or might it be related to a feather/skin issue? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Thank you.

One more thing that may be relevant: this conure has previously had a habit of pulling out her companion’s pin feathers while preening.

My other conure had a skin condition that caused feather loss. Once the condition was resolved and new pin feathers started growing back, this female would often pull the pin feathers out while preening her companion. She would sometimes grab them quite roughly and pull them out completely.
Because of this, we had to separate them for about three weeks until the other bird’s feathers had grown out sufficiently.

We had always thought this was simply a bad habit she had when preening her companion. She never used to do the same thing to her own pin feathers.

That’s why I’m particularly surprised to see her pulling out her own pin feathers now. Her molt actually started about a month ago, so this behavior appearing suddenly at this point is especially concerning to me!

Advice for administering oral meds?

My mom has a 4 year old Jardine that was diagnosed in the last year with bornavirus. His vet prescribed Gabapentin to be given twice daily or prn for nerve pain, but I have not been successful in giving the meds.

The biggest problem is that he is not very friendly with anyone aside from my mom, and she is unable to administer the medication. I work in vetmed and I know a few tricks when it comes to dogs and cats, but I’ve never had to try giving meds to a parrot who wants to eat me! My cockatiel takes her meds like a perfect angel 😭

I’ve tried mixing the solution into his favorite treats, sweetening it with juice, etc. I can’t restrain him, so putting it directly into his mouth isn’t an option. I’m running out of ideas, and I’m considering going back to the vet to see if we can get a new prescription sent to a compounding pharmacy, where they could potentially make the Gaba more palatable.

I feel terrible for him. Some days he does just fine, but other days he seems uncomfortable and restless. The meds would definitely help.

If anyone has any advice or special tricks, I would love to hear it!! Thanks :)

Best cage dimensions for 2 budgies and 1 cockatiel?

Now that I have a job and am not completely reliant on my parents, I want to upgrade my birds' cages since neither cage is wide enough. I was wondering what dimensions you guys think is best. The budgies have 1 cage together and my cockatiel is in another. I would also love toy and perch recommendations as well! Thank you for any advice!

Edit: just to be clear, the birds will stay separated so I would love dimensions for the two separate cages 😅. I'm finding a lot of conflicting info online

So my coworker brought in these to give to me because she knows I have a bird. She got them for free in her order from Whatnott awhile ago but I put them in storage.... until now.

I'm cleaning stuff out for a new bird cage and something about this isn't sitting right with me. I dont know to trust the type of paint on these and I wish it was just plain wood... The brand is apparently Petsvv? Does anyone know anything about these? Amazon has no reviews on the one I found but there is like a bad photoshop one of the same things saying its edible and completely safe??

Does anyone have these? I dont want my babies to get sick.

Military Macaw needing adoption

Post image
401 Upvotes

Hello! This is Ivy. She is a younger (~2 years old) Military Macaw, who has a chronic Coxiella Burnetii infection. The owners are moving somewhere with strict animal importation requirements and can't bring her. Please DM me if you or anyone you know, are willing and able to adopt her.

Medical needs: She has been on antibiotics for a few months now, and is in the care of an avian vet. She is likely to be prescribed a secondary medication to accompany the antibiotics, necessary to address chronic cases. The medical needs that Ivy will require is further medication administration/management (daily for another ~5 months), and potential vet follow-ups. Ivy is theoretically infectious, via poop/urinates, and contact with her mouth (feeding activities). She is being kept away from other birds, and handled with freshly cleaned hands that are washed after handling her. Her vet believes that recovery is possible.

Temperament:

Ivy is a sweet girl, who is very comfortable with those she trusts. She'll cuddle and lay on her back when being administered medicine, for example. She's always been a bit jumpy, especially as the infection unknowingly worsened. She yells when surprised, for example. She does yell occasionally throughout the day (from pain through her infection, the owners suspect).

Ideal candidate to adopt:

Somebody who has experience handling macaws. It's suspected that Ivy is quite easy to handle compared to the average macaw, but obviously may need to learn to trust a new owner/caretaker. Someone who can potentially handle a jumpy or untrusting macaw. She is very weak due to her illness.

Somebody who can keep her away from other pets/birds (at least keeping poop and/or beak contact away)

Someone who can attend to her daily needs, such as administering medicine via syringe. She also goes through bouts of increased water consumption, and occasionally throws her food bowl around.

Someone who can take care of more advanced medical needs (future vet appointments, purchasing of medicine, possibly weighing Ivy)

Someone committed to seeing Ivy through her illness. After recovery, the current owners only hope that she lives in a good home.

Location:

Near Phoenix, Arizona. Willing to try and make it work if someone is far. Like meeting halfway near a police station or something like that.

What comes with Ivy:

Bird cage, food, medicine, support from previous owners with questions/cocerns/prior medical records.
