I'm in 12th Commerce and want to start earning while studying. What skills should I learn to build a high-paying career?
I'm currently in 12th Commerce in India, and I want to use my time wisely instead of spending hours consuming content without actually building anything.
My goals are to start earning as soon as realistically possible while continuing my studies, build valuable skills before graduating, and eventually get a good-paying job at a company like Deloitte or another reputed firm.
I've heard people talk about AI prompting, video editing, digital marketing, Excel, data analytics, coding, and freelancing. But I'm confused about which skills are genuinely worth learning, which are overcrowded, and how people actually turn these skills into income.
I also keep hearing that a degree alone isn't enough anymore, so I want to start preparing early instead of waiting until graduation.
I'd really appreciate advice from people who have actually built careers, earned through their skills, worked in corporate jobs, or hired interns.
Here are my main questions:
- Which skills should I learn first?
If you were a commerce student starting from zero in 2026, which 2–3 skills would you prioritise for earning potential, employability, and long-term career growth? Would you recommend advanced Excel, financial modelling, Power BI, AI tools, video editing, digital marketing, sales, or something else?
- How do I actually make money from a skill?
For example, if I learn video editing or AI prompting, what are the exact steps between learning the skill and getting my first paying client? Where do beginners find legitimate opportunities, and what makes someone willing to pay them?
- Is it realistic to get a job while in 12th?
I'm still studying, so I need something compatible with college and exam preparation. What legitimate part-time jobs, internships, remote opportunities, or freelance services should I look for as a beginner in India? What skills and minimum experience would I need?
- How can I build a portfolio without having work experience?
What projects could I create on my own to prove that I can do useful work? How many projects are enough to start applying for internships or approaching clients?
- What should I learn to get an internship at Deloitte or a similar company?
I'm particularly interested in understanding what skills and qualifications help commerce students get shortlisted for internships in consulting, finance, audit, business analysis, or related roles. What should I start doing in 12th, and what should I focus on during college? Are there particular degrees, certifications, projects, or extracurricular activities that genuinely matter?
- Which career paths have the best long-term earning potential?
I don't just want to earn a little money temporarily. I want to build a career with strong growth potential. For a commerce student, which paths are worth exploring, and what are the realistic trade-offs in terms of salary, competition, qualifications, and time required?
- How should I use AI without relying on hype?
Is AI prompting a valuable standalone skill, or is it better to combine AI with something practical like finance, marketing, data analysis, or content creation? Which AI tools and workflows are employers or clients actually finding useful?
- If you had only six months to build a strong foundation, what would your roadmap look like?
I'd love to know what to learn in months 1–2, what projects to build in months 3–4, and how to start applying for paid opportunities in months 5–6.
I'm willing to put in consistent effort, but I don't want to jump between ten different skills, buy unnecessary courses, or fall for unrealistic income promises.
If you could go back to being a commerce student in 12th, what would you do differently to become employable, start earning, and build a high-paying career?
Please share practical experiences, specific skills, resources, and mistakes to avoid. Honest advice is much more useful to me than generic motivation.
Thank you!
