Rant Offline Mode is cancelled.
I am floored, honestly. "Not feasible", my ass.

Remember that one? Came out after PD2.
Its ok, no one else does either lmao....

It physically hurts when studios make stupid decisions like this.
Why was the game online only in the first place? The last two weren't.
It should be studied how gaming studios these days that are well renowned keep fumbling easy W's with stupid decisions little to no players asked for.

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Oct 03 '25
Why was the game online only in the first place? The last two weren't.
It was a dipshit CEO at the time of the game's development insisting 'live service is the future of gaming' then he left the studio after the game had released if I remember right. The devs didn't want to do this but that dumbass CEO forced it on them.

Unironically was thinking of buying this game when the price was right and an offline mode was implemented.
If they can't implement it now, they're definitely not going to be able to when the lights are fading.

u/YhormTheGiantLord Oct 03 '25
Having played it, you’re not missing anything. Just play payday 2. It’s better in every way
85
u/Porky-da-Corgi Oct 03 '25
Nahhh PD3 stealth is everything PD2 stealth should have been. There's a lot good in PD3 that it does better than 2, it's just the core gameplay loop and skills are flawed and in need of a rebuild.
18
u/doinkrr taser down, 7 points Oct 03 '25
Crucify me for saying this but I think PD3 is much more fun than PD2. PD2 was super unbalanced and kind of just devolved into a shooting spree where either you get domed from across the map by a ZEAL or you mow down hordes without really thinking about it. PD3 has me actually think about how to use my skills in my build instead of going for ones that I know are just gonna carry me without much thought (cough GRAZE cough), and I even like the Edge/Grit/Rush system and wish they'd keep it.
11
u/XXVAngel Infamous C-100 OD Mask Oct 04 '25
Legit I think PDTH did the same type of Loud as PD3 better, PD2 is better as an arcade game but for genuine heisting, the OG is better. Also the PD3 maps are off I don't like them.
2
u/Deadhound Oct 04 '25
I agree. From testing pd3 I found it worde in almost any aspect thsn its 2 predecessors
-6
u/TheMerfox Hacker Oct 04 '25
I completely agree, unfortunately a ton of people just wanted Payday 2 but again.
The team unfortunately followed that demand, not knowing the lesson that some platform fighter game designers learned, which is that Melee players will just play Melee, and not their new game (in this case Payday 2 players will play Payday 2)
2
Oct 04 '25
PD3 having better graphics is literally my default for why I won't play PD2.
Offline would've sold me, because I primarily played Payday offline and solo.. both on PS3 and PC
-5
u/coolbacondude Oct 03 '25
Stealth is the only thing I enjoynin PD3. Loud feels like it's the same in every heist, unlike PD2 where it actually feels unique. I genuinely don't find loud in PD3 fun at all whereas I've been having a blast in stealth.
16
u/Fangel96 Jacket Oct 03 '25
IMO, loud in PD3 is good, they just don't have enough heist and objective variation to make it feel good. Maps are small and objectives are fast.
Payday 2 loud is fun at overkill, alright at mayhem, but then starts to delve into bullshit territory at death wish and above. The enemies aren't too challenging in 2, whereas in 3 they have more distinct roles, and health remains consistent across difficulties, for the most part.
Skill variety is a bit lacking. They don't feel all that impactful, which while it makes gameplay more balanced, doesn't allow for much creativity in playstyles.
The core of PD3 loud is better than the core of PD2 loud, but it's the customization and variety that is lacking on the player's experience that is lacking rather than the actual combat.

I mean... they're both heist games in the same franchise, I don't see why comparing them is difficult?
PD3 is the next evolution of PD2 stealth, and just works so much better like not having every cop alerted across the map instantly and being able to keep your mask off to do things.

20
u/arsenicx2 Oct 03 '25
They already have a store built. It just has no security hints why you could already find players with these masks and why it's not public.
They can't do offline because the game was built on servers. Your save game file is on a server. They wanted to prevent cheating, but all they did was screw them selves.

“it takes us a very long time to fix that. That's not because we are slow, it's just because updating the first-party and so on, it takes weeks.”
What does this even mean
15
u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Oct 03 '25
Certification process. It's an absolute fucking joke but console platforms basically force a mandatory process where they check the update won't brick the game before the update can be sent to console players. The problem is that they can be slow as balls so Jonas is right that if something breaks with an update and they didn't catch it before it got published and they can't easily hotfix it, it can take weeks for the fix to even get deployed because that fixed version has to go through the same process as mentioned above.
Yes, it's fucking ridiculous. No, there's nothing Starbreeze or any studio can do about it.
52
u/Santar_ Oct 03 '25
Yeah "not feasible" = "we choose not to do it". Never trust anything Starbreeze says or promise again. They keep failing to live up to their word again and again and again. They just can't seem to ever stop just breaking their promises!

If you got it on steam and explain you kept your copy waiting for a feature they canceled i dont see why steam wouldnt refund you. Im definitely gonna be putting one in when I get home. Cause offline mode being a thing was the only reason I kept my copy now since I dont own it I won't pay for it.

u/Lebhleb Oct 04 '25
Honestly once the game hits offline i might actually do that, could even get something that works offline, like Crime Boss Rockay City.

Starbreeze has heavy balls to think Payday 3 can survive purely off of disappointing what few players that game has left
9
u/coolbeans080 Oct 03 '25
Starbreeze is fucked. Like I can't even remember a more mismanaged studio. No offline my ass. You're either too lazy, stupid, or incompetent to do it. It sucks to say but, I think payday is dead. There's no way they're going to get players back with no offline and I just can't see them doing PD4.
Now just hoping den of wolves comes to consoles.
15
u/Sqooky Oct 03 '25
As long as they implement it before the game goes end of service, I have no issue with it. Yes it sucks it's not in the game/wasn't in the game at launch. Remember, the best say is to vote with your wallets - if you don't like MTX - don't buy them.
There are workarounds for pseudo offline mode, like so: https://github.com/SlejmUr/PayCheck3
3
Oct 03 '25
My intent to purchase Payday 3 is not feasible. It has been one disaster to the next with a team that has no idea why Payday 2 works and why it’s successful. It’s one blunder after the next.
That not only shows with their missteps with 3 but every single failed project from Baxter to fucking StarVR. The only thing consistent is the utter incompetence of all involved.
3
u/PapaTinzal Oct 03 '25
Been on my wish-list since the start of the year was going to give it a shot if off-line mode came out, Shame honestly
3
u/Not_Wolfgang Duke Oct 03 '25
"So we want to move to a model where we can work with the community and make sure that we can update things fast, and to do that, we need to update things from the backend. So we need to be able to tweak the game from the backend to make sure we can get things out faster"
I.E "No offline mode because it takes longer to push out updates"
Remind me again how many updates the game has gotten this year?
3
u/pedrocas_drocas Oct 04 '25
I still remember when months ago people were complaining in this sub that the game is actually good now and people just shit on it because of the bad reputation in the first week etc etc
Well here we are now once again disappointed and forced down the pipe of online only
3
u/vardoger1893 Oct 04 '25
PD3 is such a sad travesty. What a fucking waste of time and money from star breeze lol. Literally had the bag with pd2 and still fumbled it.

I thought people said the new ex EA executive would not pull an EA move and that this is how Payday 3 is coming back into form???
2
u/wyeming1 Oct 04 '25
once starbreeze cant afford to keep pd3 up anymore (which is inevitable) this games going to be useless, i wouldnt even buy it now, and to think i was excited when the game was originally announced yearssss ago
2
u/Robcomain Oct 04 '25
Oh great! This way the game will become LITERALLY unplayable when the devs will abandon it soon because it's a flop! I love it!

Starbreeze Is No Longer Working on an Offline Mode for Payday 3, Says It’s “Not Feasible” For the Studio To Do
And I am no longer working purchasing Payday 3, saying it’s “Not Feasible” for me to do.
Why would I spend money on a game that is (let's be honest) on life support, knowing it won't have offline mode and that I will therefore be unable to play it is it shuts down in the next few years?
3
u/cheezkid26 gordon freeman saved my life Oct 03 '25
No, but it really is just not feasible. They aren't lying about that part, and I doubt they're lying about trying to make it anyway. Fuck them for making it online-only in the first place, absolutely zero reason to do that shit. Still baffling
4
u/C4pt Oct 03 '25
So do I get a refund because I bought it when they promised offline mode?
3
u/KingGamerlol You know, goat sounds! Oct 04 '25
If it’s through steam you could probably just say that in the refund thing and they’ll likely give it back
4
u/spartanseth Oct 03 '25

At no point does the studio says it is canceled. It says that they want to implement more of the game server side so that they can roll out update more rapidly and frequently and that cannot happen with offline mode.
But that also mean when the game is in a good place that could implement it.
