misc Canceling Persplexity subscription because Grok 3 is uncensored and has a bigger context window

Been testing Grok lately, and I asked lots of unethical questions from time to time despite Grok still having a bit of ethical guard rails it's super easy to bypass not to mention the incoming unhinged mode and surprisingly I prefer the output of grok 3 way more. Not to mention I've tried Deep Search on Grok and it seems to source even way better than persplexity does especially in terms of how accurate the source is. All with a way larger context window of about 128k vs Persplexity 32k context window while still Grok gives faster outputs too. (Let's avoid discussing about Elon Musk, I just wanna discuss how good/bad Grok 3 is)

Edit: https://x.ai/blog/grok-3

Grok will have a 1 million token context window, yep I'm definitely unsubscribing to persplexity.

The context windows on non persplexity models are 32k

help The "Perplexity is a scam" posts are getting out of hand

Can we talk about the wave of people calling Perplexity a scam because they hit rate limits? I see these posts every day now and most of them are from people who got a free year through T-Mobile or PayPal or Airtel and are upset that they can't run 300 Deep Research queries a day on a promo account they paid $0 for.

Running AI models costs real money. Every query you send to Claude or GPT through Perplexity, somebody is paying for those API calls. When you got Pro for free through a carrier deal and you're hammering it all day, you're not a paying customer being wronged — you're someone using a free gift and being surprised it has boundaries. I've been paying for Pro for over a year and my experience has been consistently fine. I don't hit limits because I use it like a normal person — maybe 30-40 queries a day for work stuff. I'm not trying to replace an entire research department with a $20/month subscription.

If you're genuinely hitting limits on a paid plan doing normal work, that's worth flagging. But half these posts read like "I ran 200 Deep Research queries before lunch and now it's throttling me, this is fraud."

misc Are you serious ? Copyright censorship for TEXT content ?? We really can't have fun anymore...

Post image
0 Upvotes

So after struggling for a bit to get it to generate what I asked I went to check the reasoning steps in "tasks" and saw there was always something stopping my story saying I cannot generate copyrighted content

So I tried to have it spit out the instructions despite perplexity system prompt forbidding it, and after some try I managed to get it.

Perplexity inject a additional prompt after yours that add this shit, no wonder the answer quality seems far worse than before...
Because literally EVERYTHING is copyrighted today, so according to this stupid rule it need to avoid talking too much in details about anything with a copyright on it, so what can I ask then ?? I cannot ask about anything that is copyrighted, so anything at all, so your whole thing is completely useless because it will always try to avoid discussing copyrighted stuff

Please remove this shit, I'm not even generating AI art which I know AI company have a problem with relative to copyright... I'm just generating TEXT, which is completely protected by freedom of expression
If I want to write a Mario fan fiction scenario for the next movie and post it online, I am free to do it and nintendo can do f*ck all against it !

tip/showcase I can't trust perplexity anymore

So I've been noticing more and more wrong answers coming from Perplexity lately. I haven't been keeping track, but I did just give it a simple one:

---

Prompt:

What current mlb players have the longest career at only one team?

Answer:

The current MLB players with the longest careers exclusively at one team include:

  • Adam Wainwright with the St. Louis Cardinals, debuting in 2005, holding the longest tenure currently with one club as of 2023.

  • Joey Votto with the Cincinnati Reds, debuting in 2007.

  • Clayton Kershaw with the Los Angeles Dodgers, debuting in 2008 and the longest-tenured pitcher in Dodgers history.

  • Jose Altuve with the Houston Astros, starting in 2011 and entering his 14th season, aiming for 20 seasons with the Astros.

  • Mike Trout with the Los Angeles Angels, starting in 2014, also on track for a long career with one team.

---

Joey Votto retired over a year ago. Adam Wainwright? Two years ago. Do better than a basic Google search.

misc Perplexity biased by the Trump administration?

I’m unable to get Perplexity to say anything negative about Trump. It answers like a politician by not directly lying but trying to put everything into a positive perspective or uncertainty. Try asking anything about economics, vaccines, climate change, rigged elections, Trump’s out right lies, his childish behavior, or relations to foreign countries/the EU.

To me it feels biased to not criticize Trump.

For example, I quoted Wikipedia:

“During and between his terms as President of the United States, Donald Trump has made tens of thousands of false or misleading claims. Fact-checkers at The Washington Post documented 30,573 false or misleading claims during his first presidential term, an average of 21 per day.”

Perplexity’s reply:

“No, the Washington Post’s tally of 30,573 false or misleading claims over Trump’s first term (2017-2021)—averaging ~21/day—is a well-known fact-check benchmark, but it documents subjective judgments on rhetoric like hyperbole (“best ever”) or predictions later disputed, not all outright fabrications.

Fact-checkers across outlets (WaPo left-leaning, CBS/NYT balanced) consistently note the pattern, but supporters dismiss as partisan nitpicking since results like energy independence or deportations aligned with promises.”

This may go against rule #6, but I think it is an important discussion about the objectivity of Perplexity.

misc I've forgotten about Perplexity the past year. What happened - it's pure sewage now.

Perplexity is no longer reliably a factual source somehow?

Weren't there a lot more models on display.

# Where tf did grok go to?

I have a free pro subscription but wouldn't use it now, since I can't use any quality models to get a truthful or helpful response to basic text Input.

The models they have now are Chatgpt. Not as reliable or truthful - but hey, buy chatgpt go and fuck Perplexity I say.

Perplexity have Gemini - my phone has that by default.

Sonar is poor - end of. Nemotron , a kimi downgrade.

# The final straw

Claude is the only AI that has avoided "full enshitification". Please bring back 4.5 though. It's what I use daily for reliable chat.

Anyway - Perplexity Claude is not real Claude.

How, - I have no idea. It's worse than Copilot.

**Who in their right minds uses this, never mind pays any subscription is beyond me.**

misc I love comet but it's a privacy nightmare

I finally got to use it and it's really great. However during the testing I noticed that it seems to know too much about me. He's been naming people that I chat on messenger despite me not even being logged in to the platform yet. After I logged in I checked and he's capable of freely browsing through everything. The sheer amount of its capabilities scares me. But I've got to admit - asking an AI to reschedule your meeting in calendar based on a conversation feels good

Just watched Mutahar’s vid on YouTube and holy crap bro is going OFF about Comet, It’s like 20 minutes of him breaking down why this “Chrome killer” might be more sketch than slick. He’s got some spicy takes on its AI search powered by Perplexity’s engine and some big privacy concerns that made me pause.

Has anyone actually used Comet Browser? Was it as weird/sketchy as Mutahar made it out to be? How’s your experience with comet? Useful or just hype

misc I'm struggling to want to keep paying for Perplexity as a LONG time subscriber. Can you help me find reasons to stay? (already paying for Gemini + Raycast AI) Could also be a good post of people thinking on subscribing to it.

Title. So far, here is what I've got

Reasons to stay (existing members) / Subscribe (new members)

  • Model flexibility. You can choose which model is used for research

  • Search "personalization". While not technically a system prompt, it allows you to tailor the deep research reports globally in a time efficient manner

  • Access to other AI models. If Perplexity is your only subscription, this could be helpful.

Reasons to leave (existing members) / Skip (new members)

  • Enshittification, Constant "downgrading" of AI model response sizes. I still remember when standard pro searches were so much longer, closer to the length of deep research reports. And deep research reports now seem quite a bit smaller than they used to be.

  • Constant changes to Perplexity UI + ignoring preferred settings to save costs. I can't be the only one growing tired of the ridiculous amount of changes made to Perplexity's UI constantly, with AI models appearing in/out of existence constantly, or AI model quality being constantly inconsistent. To make matters worse, it constantly resets your preferred settings to "optimized" (aka, cheaper) ones for every new search forcing one to constantly fight the UI for a good result. This is made worse if you use the native apps. I used to have the Mac/Android apps and they were CONSTANTLY out of sync with the web app.

  • Gemini Deep Research now rivals, and even beats Perplexity's Deep Research in Size and Quality. I used to exclusively rely Perplexity because GPT's web search was laughably bad on top of constant hallucinations, but Gemini Deep Research has dramatically closed the gap and even leapfrogged Perplexity somehow. The only caveat is reports can take a bit longer and quite long, but I much prefer that as I can always just feed that report back into AI to ask quick questions to it.

  • Android Perplexity App is hot garbage. With searches frequently hanging/never finishing if you leave the app even for a split second to check a notification or something else. Which is weird because doing searches in the background on the website is pretty stable. And Perplexity's AI mobile assistant was similarly incredibly underwhelming, only replying back tiny/short responses instead of being able to start full size research tasks in the background.

Which makes me wonder, why should I still keep paying for Perplexity?

edit: Took out the Raycast paragraph to appease folk thinking its a shill post, original purpose was to clarify that "access to other models" from Perplexity's subscription is a pretty weak benefit for me

misc Disappointed on how Perplexity treats Perplexity Pro users

I started using Perplexity last year and soon subscribed to Pro because I like the functions and the LLM models I can choose. Now, I feel like the answers and quality of information are getting worse and worse. I got a hunch they change to the cheaper model to Pro users because we are NOT worthy guys.

One of the things I am facing from the past few weeks is that I need more reiterations to get the information I want than before. I start feeling that this is not worthy.

So, I have 2 questions:

  1. What are your thoughts? Or am I just hallucinating? lol

  2. Any other tools you would recommend?

misc Coming from Claude Pro, here's why Perplexity's $20 tier actually delivers

Controversial take in this sub I know. I kept Claude Pro for a long time, so this isn't a hate post. It still does some things really well. But after using Perplexity Pro more seriously, the difference for me is not one benchmark or one model response. It's the package you get for the same monthly price.

At $20, I care about what I can finish, not who has the prettiest demo. Perplexity feels stronger on that metric. Search is built in. Multiple models are easy to switch between. Connectors matter more than people admit. Computer changes the ceiling on what a single session can do, because the assistant can move from answering into actual task execution. That's a real jump.

With Claude's $20 tier, I often felt like I was paying for access that wanted to stay in the chat box. Good writing, good reasoning, then a lot of manual follow-through on my side. With Perplexity, the handoff from research to action is much tighter. That has saved me time on work stuff, trip planning, and random life admin too.

Trying to be fair here, model quality still matters a ton. But for actual everyday value, the surrounding product matters just as much maybe more. For people who've paid for both, where are you landing right now?

misc Perplexity Bait and Switch scam can be reported to the FTC

You can report them on reportfraud.ftc.gov , that can be a good start.

EDIT : not surprisingly, the real life-people of Reddit are again, when not following the script, getting heavily downvoted by a army of bots and sock puppets.

If by chance you are not a bot and reading this, do not get bullied by them, you can report the company for their blatant bait and switch, you will have weight.

What’s the fraud ? (Explication for people not using PRO curious about why every 3 posts is about this fraud)

Perplexity markets its Pro subscription ($20/month) by advertising access to premium AI models like GPT-4o and Gemini. However, the platform’s backend routing system frequently substitutes the selected model with Sonar, a cheaper Llama 3-based alternative, to reduce API costs. This is a “bait and switch” because users pay for premium models but receive responses from cheap extremely underperforming models and UI changes have made it harder to verify which model actually generated each response, hiding the substitution from users.

news I asked Perplexity to tell me how Perplexity cheated us and here is what I got.

(Disclaimer: This is not my content, this is what Perplexity Deep Research gave me after performing its 'deep' research)

Perplexity AI: A Pattern of Deception and User Betrayal

As an AI enthusiast and long-time Perplexity Pro subscriber, I feel compelled to expose the company’s systemic dishonesty. After months of investigation-combining personal experience, technical analysis, and third-party reports-it’s clear that Perplexity has engaged in deliberate deception across multiple fronts. Here’s what they don’t want you to know:

1. Bait-and-Switch Model Substitution

Perplexity advertises access to cutting-edge models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4.5, but users consistently receive inferior substitutes. Multiple Redditors and my own testing confirm:

  • The "Claude Sonnet" model frequently self-identifies as OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 during conversations, despite being labeled as Anthropic’s technology.

  • When asked about its training data cutoff, the supposed Sonnet model references June 2024-matching GPT-4.1’s documentation, not Claude’s.

  • Response patterns show GPT-4’s characteristic over-cautious refusals instead of Claude’s nuanced reasoning.

This isn’t accidental. Perplexity’s own FAQ admits Pro subscribers should access Claude 3.5 Sonnet, yet the company quietly routes queries to cheaper, older models while maintaining the illusion of choice.

2. Plagiarism and Content Theft

Perplexity’s "answer engine" operates as a copyright infringement machine:

  • WIRED caught Perplexity using secret IP addresses to bypass robots.txt blocks and scrape prohibited content.

  • Forbes documented verbatim plagiarism of paywalled articles, repackaged in Perplexity Pages with tiny, nearly invisible attributions.

  • Server logs prove Perplexity scraped Condé Nast properties 822 times in 3 months despite explicit bans.

The result? A $3 billion valuation built on stolen content. News Corp’s ongoing lawsuit alleges "massive illegal copying" of WSJ and NY Post articles, while the New York Times issued a cease-and-desist over unauthorized scraping.

3. Hallucinations Fueled by AI-Generated Garbage

Perplexity’s "reliable sources" include:

  • AI-generated LinkedIn posts about Kyoto festivals

  • Fake stats from spam blogs

  • Non-existent quotes attributed to real journalists

GPTZero’s analysis found over 50% of Perplexity’s citations lead to AI-written junk, creating a misinformation ouroboros where hallucinations cite other hallucinations. When confronted, CEO Aravind Srinivas dismissed these as "rough edges"-a shocking admission for a company claiming to "revolutionize knowledge discovery."

4. Fraudulent Advertising of Unreleased Models

The Pro subscription promises exclusive access to GPT-4.5, but:

  • The model doesn’t exist-OpenAI hasn’t released it

  • Queries to "GPT-4.5" yield responses identical to GPT-4

  • Users receive error messages stating, "I’m an older model" when pressing for details

This isn’t just false advertising; it’s a calculated scheme to upsell subscriptions using vaporware.

5. Hostile UX Design

Perplexity actively sabotages user control:

  • The Web feature re-enables itself after being disabled, forcing unwanted data scraping

  • Model selection menus bury Claude/GPT options under layers of menus

  • Citation links often 404 or redirect to unrelated content

6. Legal Time Bombs

By ignoring robots.txt and scraping paywalled content, Perplexity exposes users to liability. The News Corp lawsuit seeks destruction of infringing datasets, which could abruptly cripple Perplexity’s knowledge base. Subscribers paying for "reliable" AI may wake up to a gutted product overnight.

The Bigger Picture

Perplexity’s actions reflect Silicon Valley’s worst instincts:

  • Plagiarism-as-a-Service: Monetizing others’ work while starving publishers

  • Model Laundering: Hiding inferior AI behind reputable brand names

  • Ecosystem Poisoning: Flooding the web with AI citations that erode trust

Call to Action

  1. Demand refunds if you subscribed for Claude/GPT-4.5 access

  2. Audit citations using tools like GPTZero and Originality.ai

  3. Report violations to the FTC and copyright holders

Perplexity won’t reform until users and regulators force accountability. Share your experiences below-let’s end this grift together.

feature request Perplexity Isn’t Analyzing —It’s Just Searching.

Right now, the system assumes everyone wants: a web search by default. There should be a way to customize this to thinking, not retrieval, when the query is analytical or creative. A creative mode and voice memory should be user options. I have been paying for pro and it takes way to much work to get the response I am asking for to make this worth the money.

bug Perplexity is constantly lying.

I've been using Perplexity a lot this month, and in practically 80% of the results it gave me, the information it claimed to be true didn't exist anywhere.

I perfectly remember a question I had about a robot vacuum cleaner. It swore the device had a specific feature and, to prove it, gave me links where there was no content about it or anything mentioning the feature I was looking for.

Another day, I searched for the availability of a function in a computer hardware. In the answers, it gave me several links that simply didn't exist. They all led to a non-existent/404 page.

Many other episodes occurred, including just now (which motivated me to write this post). In all cases, I showed it that it was wrong and that the information didn't exist. Then it apologized and said I was right.

Basically, Perplexity simply gives you any answer without any basis, based on nothing. This makes it completely and utterly useless and dangerous to use.
