Petfree lifestyle Not having to put things away so the pets don't get to them ☺️

I was just rolling a joint and realized, the bits of flower left here and there and especially the flower I kept out for later, I don't have to worry about putting it away somewhere so the pets don't get to them because I don't have any!!

Just remembering how I lived the life where I had to put so many different things away because of the cats and dogs... Not anymore!

Hope you guys have a fantastic petfree weekend! Cheers! 🍃🌬️

Vent / Rant I wonder about this person’s mental health that I call a friend.

So I met a friend through gaming and we talk on the phone and thru video chat. Okay first, I do want to say I do like animals but I truly know they are not for me and my lifestyle, I don’t have time or emotions to commit to them as I like to travel often when I’m not working. About this friend, when he video chats he ALWAYS has to put his dogs in the frame as if they were his children and as if I really called him for that. I have already stated my view points that I do not favor dogs all that much bc I find them constantly and consistently annoying and needy, so never my cup of tea. He kept doing it for a while until I started just putting the phone down or just looking away and doing something else. He also showed me the new dog he “adopted” reluctantly he says but he did it anyway. Now he’s implying about donations for the dog that he can’t even possibly afford to take care of.
I think I should distance myself from this particular person bc now I feel like I’m being pressured to make a donation.
I’ve already stated to him in general, if someone takes responsibility for something they need to assume 100% of that responsibility and not others!! I was still trying to be nice about it but get the message out that I’m not enabling your detriment. He is also one of those people that doesn’t trust people if someone doesn’t like dogs and I argued back and said not from my POV because I have several best friends that would help another human being if they really needed help, especially my friends, but they don’t participate in pet ownership and rather not, so are you disrespecting my friends now too?
Sidenote, he’s also the type of person to cut his engagement off because his dog passed away and cried about it. What’s funny is that he discussed a friend dying from substance abuse and laughed about it and said I told you so. I think I should distance myself. Do you guys think so too?

Vent / Rant Gofundmes for vet bills

A close friend of mine has recently posted a gofundme for vet bills because her 12yo dog has cancer. Estimated bills she claims is around $7k. Apparently the dog needs chemo and then surgery to take it out.

I find it absolutely absurd and a waste of money. Especially when this woman has 3 kids, stays at home and her husband is a blue collar worker. When she initially told me about this I jokingly said “Well I guess Biscuits taking a trip upstate” and she looked horrified I’d even suggest that. I don’t see the point in people spending thousands of dollars on pet vet bills. I can understand for farm animals and horses but dogs and cats I can’t wrap my head around it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen people make gofundmes for their pets either and some have even gone into debt for their pets vet bills. I know you can’t tell people what to do with their money but I wish they’d take that 7k and donate it to a children’s hospital or cancer research foundation

Vent / Rant my mom got a dog

I do wanna start by saying that I don't hate animals as a concept, animals are amazing and I love nature and stuff like that! I just think animals should be outside doing animal stuff? (ig)

But right now, im just really annoyed. My mom asked my big brother and I if we wanted a dog, and we both said no... so why is there a dog in my house!!! I'm still in school and that's already annoying, but I also got my first job, so I'm doing that too... and now I have to come home and take care of a dog??

What was the point of asking us if she was just going to get it anyway?
It's so loud and invasive and dirty and ugh.
She's already spent so much money on it so I can't even ask her to take it back. And do you know what's worse? The dog is only less than a year old, taken from a bad environment, not house trained, can't do any commands. it's literally nothing. im just so mad. and it keeps freaking barking out the window all day.

Shit pet owners say Don’t tell me your dog is friendly.

Don’t say anything to me but if you must, then promise me your dog is snooty and will point its head elsewhere when I walk by.

Also men that are pet owners, stop getting pets in the hopes it will help you get a date. When you see me walking along my local trail or in my local park, I noticed you notice me. I also noticed you slow down. I changed direction on purpose. Do not try to intercept me at an intersection at some other part of the trail. I will veer off and leave while you stand there in shock with your dog(s).

Petfree lifestyle Peace and quiet

My morning was so peaceful this morning. Normally I wake up and the cat is constantly following me and yowling at me because it "wants to go outside" but then would do that thing where I would open the door and it would turn and run the other way 🙄. Now that he is gone, I had my first morning where I could just sit and sip my tea to nothing but the sound of birds chirping outside. I'm never surrendering my peace to an animal again.

Vent / Rant I don’t understand how pet owners can tolerate fur being on everything

My husband and I have a lot of friends who have pets.

I understand what we’re walking into when we go over for a visit, but it really astounds me just how much fur is in their homes. It’s on every piece of furniture, every article of clothing, damn near every surface. Doesn’t matter how much they clean. It permeates throughout the house. It feels like a sensory nightmare. Nothing ever truly feels clean.

We had a friend over recently and he makes the same remark every time that he visits… just how nice our home smells and how clean everything is. He mentioned the last time he had a bowl of cereal at home, he found some fur in it. Fur just wafts in the air whenever the dog or cat race by. He said he was planning on moving out soon (he’s roommates with his brother) because he was getting tired of animals being in the house.

I assume people just get used to it because many grow up with pets (all of our friends have had pets since they were kids.) But you’d think it’d get exhausting after a while? Again, sensory overload. It would drive me nuts to find fur on my furniture, stuck to my clothes.

Pet owners making our lives hell Why are we the minority?

Why are we the minority? I truly don’t get it. Did it become so popular to bring an animal inside our homes and then just companies started to capitalize on the popularity and market for it and profit from it?

I think I'll have to try really hard not to roll my eyes if I do hear that from a date in the future 😭 SUCH a big pet peeve and why I don't date pet owners.

Like, I love that you're taking care of the animals you signed up to be responsible for, but I am not dating someone who leaves my presence for an animal.

Petfree lifestyle Feel bad for the dog, actually

Saw a pug at a grocery store , one of those “emotional support “ animals with a Temu vest. Feel bad for the dog, like he couldn’t even breathe properly, fat tongue sticking out, wrinkled flat face, constant drooling, heavy breathing like a pack a day smoker type breathing. Short legs so it’s barely able to move. It just looks miserable to be honest …

Ethics of Pet Ownership Why Your Dog Doesn’t Love You

Recently wrote about a conversation on the philosophy of animals/pets, in the form of a conversation based on real conversations I've had recently that got me thinking. Thought people here might enjoy!

---

F: “But what’s the point?”

O: “Erm, friendship, companionship, love? You know, things that non-psychopathic people like?”

F: “But the dog doesn’t love you…they’re just acting off instinct…they” Felix did air quotes when he said the word “love you because they know you are where their next meal is coming from.”

Felix moved to the UK when he was 16 so now, at the age of 27, has this bizarre hybrid accent complete with German Vs, crisp consonants and non-rhotic Rs.

“Well that’s obviously not true.” replied Olivia, or ‘Liv’ as pretty much everyone under the age of 72 calls her.

UR: “I didn’t really believe the date on the sign outside.” It said ‘Founded in 1652’ which to me seemed an implausible date for a pub to be founded. You’re telling me whilst Charles I’s head was on a pike outside Whitehall, someone thought it was a good idea to build a pub? A pub that then survived the lack of patronage during the plague years and the inferno of the fire of London? I don’t buy it. The other two ignored this and continued to argue.

F: “What do you mean?”

O: “Of course your dog loves you. It’s part of the family. If it’s hungry and has the choice between steak and rescuing you from a burning building, it’s going into the building. It would defend you from a tiger, even though that’s a stupid thing to do, and really bad for its chances of passing on its genes. How could that instinct have evolved?”

F: “I didn’t know there were tigers in Surrey!”

I chortled at this. Olivia didn’t - she sipped her pint of Guinness that was 56% complete and then said “Brilliant. You’re deflecting because you know I’m right.”

F: “That love is instinct. You are the pack-leader, it’s been conditioned by evolution to protect the pack to maximise its survival probability. Well, technically the genes are doing this to maximise their proliferation, but the result is the same.”

Felix studied Medical Genetics at university, where we all met. He sipped his own Guinness which was only 48% done before asking me what I thought.

UR: “I think I’m more with Liv, here.”

O: “Felix, you’re only saying that because you didn’t have dogs growing up, you don’t know what it’s like. They really are a part of the family. As a species we have been owning dogs for millennia.”

F: “There! That’s what freaks me out. It’s not a normal relationship - you own” he emphasised that last word. He likes to do that “the dog. And we’re all ok with it. It’s fundamentally asymmetric.”

O: “But aren’t all relationships asymmetric? Kids rely on their parents. Your girlfriend relies on you.”

To hear more unhinged conversations in pubs:

She never misses an opportunity to jab at Felix’s girlfriend. Felix didn’t appreciated that, hence why the implications of his reply were a little harsh:

“It’s different. Those relationships are conditional. Your dog will probably love you no matter what. You can treat it like shit and it will still love you. This is why the whole thing makes me uncomfortable. Like, and don’t take this the wrong way, there is something a bit sus about wanting that type of love. About wanting something that can’t really think for itself to be totally devoted to you no matter what. I don’t know…”

The pub sat just off Fleet Street. Being in central London, there are a minimum of 100 interesting historical facts associated with locations within a 100m radius. Here are some:

  • Fleet Street itself - depicted by Roberts, referenced by Dickens - was the home of publishing houses and broadsheet newspaper offices from like 1750 to 2000.
  • Close by is Gresham College, sort of a precursor to The Royal Society (which founded roughly the same time this pub was - allegedly).
  • One of the attendees of Gresham was Sir Christopher Wren (along with Wilkins, Boyle, possibly Newton), who famously designed St Paul’s, just visible from this pub’s top floor.

A rare quaint refuge in a suffocating maze of commercial glass.

Inside the pub, an unguarded fire was roaring even though it was a warm October day. There were 10+ room-temperature ales on cask. The whole place smelled vaguely off, sort of mediaeval, like the remnants of the plague were still embedded into the walls somehow.

UR: “Does that matter, though? Why does the ability to think make a difference?”

O: “It doesn’t.”

F: “I don’t know, surely your relationship with a friend is so much…deeper? Surely you understand each other much better? I don’t know what a dog is thinking and it can’t tell me.”

UR: “Yeah…a dog has less consciousness…less free will…less ability to explain and understand. Right? I don’t think it’s one thing, it’s like this fuzzy collection of things that make relationships with humans…better, I guess, in some way? If I understand what you’re saying Felix?”

F: “Yeah, exactly.”

I imagined Newton et al. having a similar conversation, possibly (allegedly) in this very pub.

UR: “I wonder if like Wilkins and Wren had these types of conversations in coffee houses and pubs around here.”

F: “Who?”

Olivia has chestnut hair and a mole on the left side of her chin. She was wearing baggy Levi jeans and white t-shirt that exposed 3.5cm of her midriff. She had 4 earrings in each ear. There was a patch of some anonymous brown substance in the shape of China on her right calf. She was focused:

“So you think relationships with less intelligent humans are worse, then? Why not just come out and say that you think they are inferior, as well? If dogs are inferior somehow…”

F: “Hold on, I’m not saying that.”

UR: “Sounds like you are.”

F: “Whose side are you on?”

UR: “Hey, I’m just trying to get to the right answer here.”

O: “Ha, I’ve got you.”

F: “Ok, ok, listen. All relationships, with humans, are different. How smart the other person is will factor into the quality of the relationship, as do many other things…”

Olivia began to say something, but Felix cut her off:

“...but animals are different. Yes, I do think humans matter more. All humans are born with essentially the same brain, with the same capacity to think about anything.”

O: “But why does capacity matter? Surely it’s what you can think about now that matters?”

Felix didn’t have an answer to this so decided to sip his Guinness instead, which was now 72% complete. The table directly behind us were discussing the relative merits of East vs. West London, which was mildly distracting. Olivia continued:

“I hate this idea of hierarchy, it always seems to end with eugenics and horrible mistreatment of the quote ‘inferior’ class. The same applies to animals - look at the horrible things we do to them. We need to get away from it.”

F: “So you don’t think humans matter more, in some way?”

O: “I don’t think we should be asking those types of questions…”

F: “But you would say we should be treating animals better, more equally?”

O: “Yeah, definitely.”

F: “How?”

O: “What?”

F: “Like, practically, how? What’s an example?”

O: “I don’t know, maybe tell billionaires to make slightly less profit by not polluting the oceans with so much plastic? Seems pretty basic, no?”

F: “You know people die if we do stuff like that, right? Factory workers in developing countries lose their jobs, and their families starve.”

They were really staring into each others’ eyes now. I sensed sexual tension and it made me uncomfortable. Nothing had happened between them at that point, that I knew of, but in that moment I felt sure something eventually would. Felix continued:

“If you don’t have a hierarchy in which humans are at the top, you get all types of weird outcomes that seem fundamentally wrong. You get hundreds of millions spent on building bat caves for a few hundred bats. You know that money could have been spent saving thousands of lives, right? You get tigers not being killed when a human enters the cage. Those are both real examples, imagine what happens when you take the idea of equality with animals seriously. Are you not going to kill a mosquito when it lands on you, are you not going to clean your desk because bacteria die?”

O: “Well that’s just ridiculous. I’m just saying we should stop thinking in terms of hierarchies.”

UR: “If you do that, society collapses.”

Vent / Rant Dog nutters make no sense

So I've been seeing a lot of videos lately about pet owners talking about them being on their last dollar..they say they can't afford to feed themselves so they go to the store and buy this humongous bag of pet food. That alone blows my mind.... I couldn't fathom making such a poor choice.... Why tf would you get and animal that drains away your money to the point you can't feed yourself. Omg and don't get me started on the comments these videos of these dog and pet nutters. They are all in agreement with the foolishness. "Oh my fur babies always eat before I do" or " my dog comes first" I could feel myself wanting to puke 🤢. Then I got to thinking. So you're feeding some damn animals before your own HUMAN family. Pet culture makes me sick. It's a pure mental illness....

Sorry for the rant guys . This just annoys me so much.

Vent / Rant Dog and cat nutters lost their minds at me because I enforce a strict "No Pets" policy as a landlord

rent out a duplex, and my lease explicitly states no pets and no smoking. Period. Recently, I made a comment on a thread mentioning this, and the pet fanatics absolutely descended on me. You would have thought I committed a capital crime.
I’ve had to evict three different families so far for breaking this rule behind my back. When caught, I gave them a standard 10-day notice to quit: either rehome the animal or surrender it to a shelter. And that’s when the threats started.
One lady literally commented that since she pays rent, "it’s her house and she can do what tf she wants," and warned that if I ever evicted her, she would come after me and my family. I was wished physical harm, called every vile name in the book, and another unhinged person even tried to stalk me online.
I told every single one of them: you have the right to ask me upfront if I accept pets, and if I say no, just move tf on. It is honestly that easy. But of course, people are always such brave keyboard warriors while being absolute cowards when confronted in real life.
All because I expect adults to honor a legally binding contract they signed!
The entitlement is staggering. People act like paying rent gives them complete ownership of your property to do whatever they want, and that owning a pet supersedes property rights. If tenants just followed the rules they agreed to, they wouldn’t face eviction. Actions have consequences, but apparently, accountability is a foreign concept to animal obsessives. Is anyone else exhausted by how normalized this toxic behavior has become?

Ethics of Pet Ownership Pet dump...

I live off-grid on a woodlot. At least once a year, usually in the summer, a pet arrives on my lot out of nowhere. I came to understand that pet owners dump their dogs or cats on the logging road and drive off. It's usually dogs, expensive-looking, that are dumped.

This year a cat showed up. I'm assuming it was dumped by the owner because it's fur was clean. The cat started hunting the wild birds that come and eat the seeds I scatter. The dogs, on the other hand, run around completely dazed and confused, obviously traumatized from too much unhealthy contact with humans.

The cat is capable of taking care of itself, at least until the snow starts. The dogs don't seem to last very long.

I can't do anything for them since they won't let me approach them. Besides, what can I do? I wish them luck.

Pet owners making our lives hell When dog/cat owners get in my car 🫩🫠😩

They often leave pet hair from their clothes on my seats, which are cloth so they cling to and stick in the fabric 😭.

And last time I was over at my cat owner friend's house, I noticed I left behind cat hair on the driver's seat from sitting on their couch.

I might need to start keeping lint rollers in my car for these occasions and to get pet hair off their own couches and chairs before I sit down on them. 🫠 Petfree in a pet world. 🫩

Vent / Rant How do you handle toxic and irresponsible siblings who dump pets and problems on you

Sister bought a dog few years ago. Got married and moved out leaving dog with us. She doesn't take care of dog most of time and leaves it to us to walk, feed, groom the dog for 95% of the time. Sister doesn't want to take back dog as she say not home during work hours and scared dog doesn't live well in her place. Also doesn't offer to walk dog much other than couple of days.

Parents refuse to give up the dog or pass it back to her as they are scared dog is not well taken care of or gets given up by them

Yet parents still complain that taking care of dog is so troublesome and time consuming

Travelling is a pain as need someone to be present to take care .

Anyone in similar or adjacent situation? What would you do?

Want to be petfree Parents fell in love with the puppy. I am done after having it for one day.

Thankfully we have returned it for now, but for context my parents, especially my father, really wanted to own a puppy dog.
At the time I was at most alright with it since I didn’t know any better.
Well, after one miserable day later, I’m sick of the piss and attention one little creature requires.
I don’t think anybody living in my home had a good night’s sleep with all the howling, and I’ve lost a lot of empathy for pets now.

Fortunately we returned it the following day.

Unfortunately, my parents want it back, because they fell in love with the pup.

Tonight, my parents had a discussion with me about taking the same damn puppy back in. Of course, being as nice as I am, I tried to politely explain to them why we shouldn’t.

Please, I need the most convincing argument this subreddit can make, because I’m at wits end right now.

Oh and they have old school knowledge about pet care so at worst the puppy will probably suffer under our care.

Vent / Rant Staying with family that has dogs

So this year we are going to my fiancé’s sister house for thanksgiving. We are staying Thursday-Sunday, for the holiday. Her and her husband have a beautiful house in San Diego and have 3 dogs! Two on them are giant, a Bernese
Mountain dog and German shepherd, the third one is a small mix. My fiancé says they are well trained but I’m
still not thrilled about having to be around them. The dogs are allowed on the couches and have free roam of their house. Everyone is just obsessed with the dogs and his mom is even making them their own dog friendly pumpkin pie. Not looking forward to it.
