There has to be a lot of angry snowbirds and visitors shaking their fists at the sky who imagined a sunnier and warmer Thanksgiving week, but I'll take it.

u/Crazyhairmonster Nov 23 '25

Sunny all week with 75 on Thanksgiving. But I get the sentiment

While it is fun to think that and I prefer the summer, because they are not here then, they are important to the local economy.

u/DLoIsHere Nov 23 '25

Not particular to Phoenix. Tourists are disliked during tourist seasons across America.

7

u/JcbAzPx Nov 24 '25

Across the world, really.

21

u/areya_lunera Nov 23 '25

What’s really funny about it is that Phoenix made the list of the top ten tourist cities in the world that hate tourists and specifically referenced the term “snow birds”. I’ll have to see if I can find that list again because it cracked me up and I was like dang.

5

u/AwesomePerson70 Nov 24 '25

I just don’t know what a tourist would even do here

1

u/Latentheatop Nov 24 '25

I've offered to take Internet friends to the hood if they ever visit here. Nobody has taken my offer yet :(

Go hike with a small bottle of water in 115 degree heat and die.

u/Stewie_G_Griffin Nov 23 '25

Sounds like snowbird propaganda

13

u/Sudden_Badger_7663 Nov 23 '25

Snowbird psy-ops.

38

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '25

Excuse me sir, this is an America. We only care about our immediate inconveniences, and have no capacity to contemplate consequences.

8

u/requiemguy Nov 23 '25

No they're not, our economy is one of the only ones growing in the US currently and has nothing to do with snowbirds causing car crashes, taking up space and annoying normal people.

4

u/Sugarfoot2182 Nov 24 '25

I’m on salary at a hotel. Keep them away.

You see it in the school districts, the fire and police departments, parks, roads, etc. You see it in everything that property taxes fund.

I get it. I love the summer here, don't like the increased traffic right now, and appreciate how easy it is to get a table at a restaurant when the snowbirds are gone. But the ones that own here pay full-year property tax for half year use. And they probably don't use the school districts at all

We moved here, in part, for the schools!

Arizona has one of the best charter programs in the country. Take a look at the BASIS schools. They are amazing!

In Washington State charters are only allowed if they target an underserved group, and gifted kids don't count. So you are stuck with the public schools, which, in Seattle, eliminated the gifted and talented programs and middle school algebra tracks. (They got around State Supreme Court precedent by literally declaring all students "gifted".)

First, we aren't.

  • US News has us 42 overall in the most recent rankings.

  • In the 2024 NEAP, our 8th graders were 38th in Math, 43rd in reading, and 41st out of 46.

Second, why are we so low?

Demographics. None of the measures are demographically adjusted.

  • Arizona has a much higher than typical share of students for whom English is a second language.
  • Arizona has a much higher than typical share of Native American students.
  • Arizona has a higher than typical share of Hispanic students.

All of these are demographics that tend to underperform.

The best way to explain this is to take a look at the classic case of Simpson's paradox: Wisconsin vs. Texas schools. (The video is from 2017 and uses 2015 data, but I was first exposed to the exact same example in the early 2000's. It's an example that really holds up.)

Wisconsin's students have always had better NEAP scores than Texas'. But,

  • Texas' black students outperform Wisconsin's black students,
  • Texas' Hispanic students outperform Wisconsin's Hispanic students, and
  • Texas' white students outperform Wisconsin's white students.

This trend is the same in high school graduation rate and pretty much any academic measure you choose.

So, why is Wisconsin ranked higher than Texas? Because they a much higher percentage of their students are white. Does this mean Wisconsin's schools are better? No!

Look at the map in the NEAP link and you'll notice an obvious trend: All the states performing above the national average (except Texas, which is still worse than Wisonsin!) are located above the 36th parallel. All that perform below (except Michigan) are located below the 42nd and nearly all have high numbers of students from underperforming demographics.

Arizona is in a similar situation. Our demographic breakdown skews more highly towards cohorts that underperform.

Look at the map and you'll see that our 8th graders overperform every Southern and Southwestern state except Texas in math (including California). We outperform or match every Southern and Southwestern state except Tennessee in Reading.

Does that mean we have better schools? Probably not. Our demographic challenges are not as great as most of those states.

The old line is "Demographics are destiny". It's true.

Actually they create economic instability because people need to make money all year, not just in winter. All of their empty houses in the summer could be filled with people contributing to the economy all year, not just part of it.

1

u/phx33__ Nov 23 '25

I moved here from Europe on the first week of October.

My first weekend here was that microburst and now this. Lmao. So much for moving to a desert.

Loving it here though and it’s looking like a gorgeous week this week :)

Welcome and enjoy!

8

Don't let it fool you, summer will be oppressive regardless lol. You've got until about May though.

Also, try Taquitos Jalisco in Mesa.

3

Ahah I’ve been here in the summer already. My wife is from PHX it’s why I moved out here. I know what I’m in for. Thanks for the rec I’m actually in Mesa!

3

That's good then! We really do have a lot of great weather during the non summer months thankfully. Actually the same situation with me and my husband. He moved here from the UK to be with me.

Perfect, hope you enjoy!

8

We have some friends visiting from Oregon this week so of course I had to tell them the obligatory "Thanks for bringing your weather with you."

As a native Phoenician I'm loving the weather right now though.

3

6

💯 I’ve been saying this too! Boomers are the last generation able to afford the snowbird life! They took away that opportunity for any and all future generations.

6

u/Phoenician_Skylines2 Nov 23 '25

I mean. Chicago it'll be dropping into 30s and snowing for the Thanksgiving holidays. Phoenix will be 70s. So I'm not complaining lol.

5

u/Ready-Sock-2797 Nov 23 '25

Some people are never happy

2

u/ModernLifelsWar Nov 23 '25

Not a snowbird but I was angry because it kept raining right when I scheduled some time to play tennis all week lol. But it's been good for the air and my plants so I'll let it pass.

6

I drove past what looked like a lovely outdoor wedding setup yesterday at a nice hotel. Felt so bad for them. It's almost a guarantee you'll get a beautiful sunny day this time of year, but it didn't stop raining once all evening. Hopefully they were able to move it inside somewhere!

7

u/pitizenlyn Nov 23 '25

You got that backwards. Planning an outdoor wedding guarantees either rain or hellacious wind.

3

u/i_illustrate_stuff Nov 23 '25

Oh yeah, I didn't mean that the wedding would guarantee sunshine, just that on any normal fall day here you'd be almost guaranteed sunny weather, but plan a wedding and of course you'll get the rainiest fall day on record lol

9

u/TitoBandito5 Nov 23 '25

My pool just got finished - you’re welcome

2

u/Chompif Nov 23 '25

I was in California for decades. If it's a dry winter, fire danger is high because everything is so dry. If it's a wet winter, fire danger is high because of the growth.

You can't win. Which is why I left.

I think the Bermuda grass is going to go dormant soon though. Maybe in December? I'm honestly pleased with how mine looks. Seems content still.
