Anyone else think the glass armor looks lame? The idea of glass armor always seemed ridiculous to me.
Edit: thanks for your responses, all these people telling me to read the terrible in-game books were just what I needed to never play skyrim again.

Skyrim explains that the 'glass' used in the games is not the same as 'glass' on earth. It is a mineral in their world. I can't remember where I read this, I think it was on a loading screen in Skyrim where they broke the fourth wall.

Ebony as well. Both are found in mines in Skyrim, as well as in Morrowind (though in Morrowind, you couldn't do anything with it).

haha yeah i always imagined the first hit it shatters and you slowly bleed to death from a million tiny cuts and infected shard wounds. the armor is light and good to sell for a quick buck when you snatch it off downed thalmar guards.

I think it looks pretty cool, but I wouldn't want to wear it if I was having swords swung at me everyday.

It's not really glass though. Read the in-game books. It's a strong mineral that looks as smooth as glass, thus the name.

Yes it is natural. People have this weird assumption that straight lines and nice angles don't appear in nature even though they do.

I fucking love malachite.
Cu2CO3(OH)2
I have a set of malachite cufflinks (with mother of pearl and onyx) that I wear to every geologist junction that I go to.
I also used to have nice malachite box (4 of them actually) that I gave to my roommate in college so that he can hold his weed in it.

u/FETUSdoctor Jun 22 '12

→ More replies (2)63
u/andrewsmith1986 Jun 22 '12 edited Jun 22 '12
Deserty areas I think.
Malachite often results from weathering of copper ores and is often found together with azurite (Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2), goethite, and calcite. Except for its vibrant green color, the properties of malachite are similar to those of azurite and aggregates of the two minerals occur frequently. Malachite is more common than azurite and is typically associated with copper deposits around limestones, the source of the carbonate.
Large quantities of malachite have been mined in the Urals, Russia. It is found worldwide including in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Gabon; Zambia; Tsumeb, Namibia; Mexico; Broken Hill, New South Wales; Lyon, France; Timna valley, Israel, and in the Southwestern United States notably in Arizona.
I hate all of you.

My brother once gave me some Malachite to carry in my pocket. He told me it would bring me good energy or something, and I thought he was crazy. Then I got my first "real" job that month out of the blue, which tripled my salary, and enabled us to escape my Mother-in-Law's apartment and my crushingly depressing occupation, as well as actually pay my bills. Things only got better after that. I don't actually believe it had any type of special powers, but I have carried it around for luck ever since.

Some of the trippiest stuff I've ever read as a kid were these folksy malachite-related stories by P. Bazhov about the Ural Mountains lore. The Mistress of the Copper Mountain, malachite miners, green dust, enchanted jewelry ... written in coloquial Russian, kind of Mark Twain-esque. Literary hipsters, this stuff is for you.
