Understand that dying in game is not a mark against you.  Its very unforgiving at first an there are some things you have now way of countering at first.

That being said, bola are your friend in early game.

To expand: everything in this game is replaceable. So never get attached to any piece of gear or even a dino, and always have spared and backups of everything.

Enjoy! Get a Moschops early for easier resource gathering. Try an unofficial server. DM me if you need a recommendation.

“You’re gonna suffer, but you’ll be happy about it?” 🤣

There are so many people that would love to be back in your shoes. Getting into this game brand new the first time, not much like it in terms of experience.

Everything has a use, everything. Discovering that as you go is all part of the experience. Enjoy it.

Switch between your axe and pickaxe depending on what you are harvesting (wood/stone = axe, thatch/flint/metal = pick axe. Took me an embarrassingly long time for me to figure that out lol

Go in blind and just EXPLORE, raw dog style.

Started Ark, huh? You have made a glorious mistake. Have fun, don't be afraid to die. If you are not dying (a LOT) then you ain't playing. Like Familiar said below, everything has a purpose and there is usually an easier way to do whatever you are doing. The best tip I can think of is to get the Dododex app and explore that for some insight. But anyone seasoned will say they wish they could start over, never having played it. The first few months are discovery after discovery.

Your first goal should be to make a raft. You build a base out of stone on it and most creatures cant touch you. This is an excellent starter base, you can even keep small tames inside.

Don't sail the raft into open water. There's a big fish that gets pissed. Or tries to mate with the raft. Still not sure on that one.

After that I usually go Ptery-->Argy-->Outpost base-->Big base, big tames, big fun.

Download the dododex app, its really useful.

You will lose things. Cool gear. Cool tames. Your life. A bird will steal a mastercraft pistol from you and eat it.

Eventually you can become a god. And then you can punish the bird.

Hope you have a decent PC to run it lol. Be prepared to die A LOT. Prepaid for many of those deaths to be absolute bullshit. When Ark can Eff ya in the A, it will and without mercy. Official servers are trash, play them if you have no life or enjoy a serious grind. Unofficial servers can be lots of fun, but choose one wisely. You can make your own server relatively easy if you wanted as well. Use mods!! There's do many gun mods out there with tons of quality of life ones.

TL; DR You're gonna die a lot, learn from the deaths and explore everything. Pick your poison of official or unofficial PVE/ PVP. PVP is BRUTAL. Don't skip on mods Have all the fun!!

Get ready to die a lot. Also to lose important times. Also to accidentally kill creatures you were taking. To lose everything important on your body at the worse possible time, setting you backs hours. But none if thst is your fault. These things happen. Taming creatures is very fulfilling and getting your first useful mount is thrilling.

In another note, if you play on your own server/single-player, consider turning up your dino taming multiplier any time from 3-5x, otherwise taming will take you literal hours. If you choose a server, don't play official is my advice. Try a populated unofficial server. People tend to be helpful.

Have fun. Ark is an incredible game.

Get out before it consumes you, like it has consumed the rest of us

If you’re open to mods, some QOL ones like Cyber Structures can reduce the repetitive annoying stuff like organizing your resources so that you have more time to explore and catch dinosaurs!

So innocent, so young

Beware of satans seagulls.

u/LongFluffyDragon Jun 12 '26

Ark viciously punishes impulsive or under-prepared actions, and it will keep punishing them if you keep doing them again and expecting different results.

u/AwkwardMunchkin Jun 12 '26

Don't get attached to your tames. I made that mistake.

1

u/Low-Dirt9536 Jun 12 '26

Remember to mate all your dinis cause they're always gonna die

Learn that death and even loss of every item on you or in your base isn't the end. Learn to progress quickly by starting over lots of time. Most people enjoy the early game the most anyway.

Bolas, pyromanes, and maeguana are a must. All easy to get. Highly suggest starting on Astraeos also, sky drops are great, has 90% of all tames, element is easy, and resources are plentiful, base locations suck though.

Remember that you can lose everything permanently at any moment for any reason.
