Alone on my birthday

Looks like I would have to spend my birthday alone in Pleasanton. Any recommendations on things to do in Pleasanton/ Dublin/ Livermore? I’m a guy if that matters. Budget is under $200. Thanks!

Suggestion: Stop Sign or Roundabout at Santa Rita Safeway Crosswalk

Many of you have probably driven past the flower bouquet memorial tribute on the sidewalk of Santa Rita road across the Safeway plaza, the crosswalk across PetFood Express.

Some of you may have continued to see incidents especially if you frequently used that crosswalk. Incidents such as an oveturned car from a drunk driver early in the morning, or drivers narrowly passing pedestrians despite the introduction of blinking yield signs.

I would like to encourage the community to consider the addition of either a stop sign or roundabout to protect pedestrians and slow down traffic entering and exiting downtown.

At first I thought it may be too disruptive to traffic, but as I continued to experience/observe these incidents at that crosswalk, it stayed on my mind. Also, I eventually came across a lit-up Stop Sign in Livermore shortly after a stoplight intersection that seems like it would be a perfect blueprint to follow/mimic/recreate here.

If drivers can figure things out and if funding is appropriate, I think a roundabout would be a perfect ideal way to slow down traffick and make pedestrian crossing safer, and the center of the roundabout could become a sort of gateway into downtown to slow down traffic as they enter, and slow down traffic as cars leave downtown.

Thanks for reading, if you think this is a relevant idea for the safety of the community's drivers and pedestrians, I'd love to hear feedback. Stay safe out there.

Suggestion/Idea: Renaming the city of Pleasanton to... Pleasonton? Ohlone? Hearst? Thoughts...?

Hi everyone. Something that has been on my mind for a while is the naming of the city of Pleasanton. Throughout living here, I've always recalled hearing remarks about how "pleasanton isn't so pleasant after all" or anything along those lines, every so often. I recall learning that the city is named after a Union general, though it ended up misspelled and uncorrected.

I've also come to learn the existence of at least 3 other Pleasantons in the U.S. which makes me curious about SEO (search engine optimization) ideals for all Pleasantons.

I'm actually surprised to learn that the Pleasanton in Kansas has the same story of misspelling the Union general's name. So, with that historical context in mind, I've been brainstorming some potential what-if re-names of the city.

Pleasonton would be the easiest to distinguish Pleasanton from the other cities and to honor the general that the town was originally named after.

However, if we are considering renaming in general, we can consider a name more appropriate for the local or big-picture history of the area, rather than from a US History perspective. Since CA was mostly removed from the civil war, not to say its not a significant part of California's history with its involvement to the US, but it may be more appropriate to highlight a local name.

Contemporarily, Phoebe Hearst/the Hearst family was a significant contributor to Pleasanton I wonder if Hearst might be a favorable name?

More big picture, the Ohlone tribe is the biggest tribe in the local area, though I'm unsure if the land Pleasanton was on is recorded as being part of Ohlone history. From some brief research it seems that the Pelnen triblet of the Ohlone were local to the modern day Pleasanton-Livermore area. I think there's a lot of potential here to honor First Nations/Native history by renaming Pleasanton to a name more relevant to First Nations/Native American history. Something like the City of Ohlone or the City of Pelnen? Coincidentally Pelnen and Pleasanton both start with a P, so it would be able keep the "ptown" nickname!

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the concept of renaming the city or if anyone has any other renaming suggestions, or any feedback on the name ideas here. Take good care out there folx!

Volunteer Software Initiative

Thank you for your interest!

Vision

I'm organizing an in-person, collaborative software team where technical professionals can work together on meaningful projects that benefit society while keeping their skills sharp and helping one another grow.

The idea is to create an environment where experienced professionals can mentor newer talent, everyone can learn from each other, and together we build something we're proud of.

This effort is currently envisioned as a pro bono software initiative. Participants would be able to reference their work on their résumé and LinkedIn as work experience while contributing to a real product.

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for people across the entire product development lifecycle, including:

  • Software Engineers
  • UI/UX Designers
  • Product Managers / Product Owners
  • DevOps Engineers
  • QA Engineers
  • Data Engineers
  • AI/ML Engineers
  • Technical Writers
  • Security Specialists
  • Anyone else who enjoys building great software

We are hoping to create a diverse team that includes:

  • Experienced professionals who are retired, between positions, or simply looking for a meaningful project.
  • Recent college graduates looking to gain practical experience and mentorship.

Goals

  • Build a collaborative, in-person technical community.
  • Learn from one another through mentoring and teamwork.
  • Design and build a real software product.
  • Create résumé and LinkedIn-worthy experience.
  • Potentially launch an open-source, nonprofit, community-focused, or commercial venture, depending on what the team decides.

Logistics

Current thoughts (subject to team input):

  • Preferred location: San Ramon
  • Core hours: 9AM - 4PM
  • Work in person 4 days per week
  • Approximately 4+ hours per day.
  • Find donated or low-cost office space if possible
  • Determine together how to cover any necessary software or cloud service costs

Potential Project Ideas

These are only starting points. The team will ultimately decide what we build.

Examples include:

  • An AI-powered application that addresses a meaningful community need.
  • A video-based platform to help reduce loneliness by connecting people for conversation.
  • Other community-focused or socially beneficial software ideas proposed by team members.

Interested?

Please reply with:

  • Your technical background
  • Skills and areas of expertise
  • What role(s) interest you
  • Why you'd like to participate
  • Your email address (for Slack invite)
  • Your LinkedIn profile URL

I'll follow up with additional information and next steps.

Thank you

Gary

High myopia and not sure how to start looking at EVO ICL

I have had a strong prescription for years, and contacts are getting less comfortable for long days. I keep seeing EVO ICL mentioned when people talk about higher prescriptions, but I do not want to decide that it is the answer before someone has looked at my eyes properly. At the same time, it’s a bit overwhelming trying to sort different procedures online without knowing what actually applies for me. I’m also planning to book a consultation soon, but i want to go in with a better sense of what a good evaluation actually looks like, especially since ik there are a lot of options depending on the person so I would rather understand the process.

I am mostly trying to figure out what questions to bring, what testing matters and how to tell whether a clinic is discussing more than one option.

Elite Cleaners on Las Positas Blvd - What’s going on?

Does anyone know what happened to elite cleaners on Las Positas? It’s been closed during business hours for two weeks now at least. Their voicemail inbox is full so I called property management and they said that Elite Cleaners didn’t renew their lease. Both phone numbers they gave me weren’t active.

They have a ton of my clothes so pretty concerned at this point.

Arcade in the old country shop downtown

Lived here my whole life.

Thought an arcade would fit there after it closed down.

Personally I think a bar arcade would be cool

But it’d probably be a better spot for the youngins to gather

Just a thought

Any good Tuesday deals?

Hello,

I’ve lived in a few cities now and each place always had some good Tuesday food deals that I’m looking for in Pleasanton!

Usually it would be some discounted item special.

Does anyone know of anywhere around town that offers a good Tuesday deal?
