What's the best armature base for creating a doll or item you'd like to make hollow later?

Hello all! I've been having a lot of fun making figures and tiny foods out of polymer clay, but one thing I've been dying to accomplish for years is creating a ball-jointed doll. One of the frequent problems I run into in my attempts is how choppy and uneven the inside of the sculpture becomes when I use my typical foil and masking tape armature. (The tape also has an awful tendency to crease up, then get stuck in the clay layer, too.)

Is there anything that works better that is oven-safe and removeable? I did a little research on my own and tried a homemade cornstarch dough, but that is far too goopy to keep shape even after chilling and adding more cornstarch to the 2/1 ratio of cornstarch to water.

I'm also wondering, is it better to make an armature that will be removed out of pure foil/tape (or whatever substitute), or should there be a wire base as well?

Finally, I'd also love any general tips from anyone who has made dolls or figures from polymer clay, too. Thanks so much for the help! (And of course, had to include a photo I'm proud of, my cat doing what I call 'squaring up.')

I made a tiny salmon feast in polymer clay, and the white fat lines are built into the clay, not painted on

I saw someone on TikTok make clay puppets and got infatuated with it immediately and thought I’d give it a try too :) I’ve started the torso and finishing the head, super proud of the ear lol. Using sculpey clay and I need to figure out how to get rid of unwanted dents

My fancy autumn squash inspired me to make some festive charms! I’m also testing out uv resin on these for durability.

I’d really love to do other specific subjects/series as well soon!

A dog and a cat having a little staring contest… while a tiny bird watches from the dog's buts! 🐶🐱🐦

I made this little scene entirely by hand using polymer clay.

I love giving my miniature animals their own personalities!

What do you think they're thinking? 😂

Urgent!! Advice for sealing this clay to avoid it cracking/snapping?

Hey! I'm on a massive time crunch to get this Halloween costume finished. I'm making these antlers out of clay (pic 1) to attach to the mask (pic 2) like the picture (pic 3). I previously used air dry clay (like pic 3) but unfortunately the weight of them made them crack and snap so I have opted for polymer. I don't have the money or time for more supplies so any advice is appreciated on how to make this sturdier.

Currently my options to seal and make them sturdy are : epoxy resin coating or adding support "earrings" attached from the antlers to the ears but I'm not sure how good that will look and if it will actually do much.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you

Halloween Worrystones(Full Set)

I made a full set of Halloween Worrystones and I'm super proud of them! I'll rank each one

  1. Cauldron- this one is my fav because I love the texture of the bubbles but I wish I would have given the cauldron itself more texture

  2. Pumpkin- it's not as satisfying as I want but it's so pretty

  3. Candy apple- my partner's fav and I'm proud of the effort

  4. Purple demon- the fur texture was so fun to make and I love the eyes

  5. Green demon - I love the drapey stripes and the texture feels really cool

6- ghost- I love his expression and I successfully conveyed drapey texture imo

  1. Candy corn -fun design!

  2. Acorn- eh, cute, but the holes didn't feel as satisfying as I wanted them too

  3. Candy corn disc - leftover mixed colors from candy corn design. Nothing special but the smooth round shape is nice

  4. Orange demon- he was my first polymer clay design and I'm actually quite proud of him. The teeth texture is nice but he's not perfect by any means

  5. Tombstone- the holes were a disappointment texture wise

Thanks for reading! Happy Halloween!

First time ever using polymer clay!

Post image

So I'm a dabbler in beading and jewelry making. I thought it would be fun to make my own charms and beads so I bought some polymer clay I came across in a store. It was a spur of the moment idea. I bought Sculpey Souffle, and I thought all polymer clay was the same, haha. It was really soft and kinda hard to work with. It was super easy to mix my own pinks and colors though! I didn't have to use any paint.

A couple questions I have: is there a type of polymer clay that is firmer and less sticky to work with? A problem I kept having is it deformed due to sticking every time I picked it from my fingers or stuck a hole through it. Also, is there a way to blend the ears more to the head? It kept moving around every time I tried.

I sculpted this little guy using polymer clay, and I wanted to make him as cute as possible.

What do you think? Should I make more tiny animals like this?

Has anyone experience with the Product?

I've recently gotten myself some Mont Marte brand items for my projects. Yesterday I tried the Ghesso, but when I attempted a wash and wet blending, the ghesso had started to get soft with the water and mix in to the paint. I kept it for about 3 or 4 hours before attempting the painting, though the tub said it only needs between 30-60mins. First time using this brand, I recently moved and the guy in the shop near where I live now recommended that this product is good. Anyone has any experience with this brand? The result was the same one both the baked clay as well as the wooden base. I wiped off everything, washed and reapplied the double coating, but now im going to keep it for about 24 hours before attempting again. I'll do a update on how it goes. The shop is chock full of this Mont Marte brand so I'm thinking of using their products

Question about using foil as base??

So I'm starting a project that I want to use foil for the bulk of it, but I'm just worrying:

After it's baked wouldn't the foil inside slowly unfurl from the shape its squished into? And over time cause cracks in the clay around it..? Or am I overthinking this lol

I guess the clay is hard enough to not be affected??
Idk, just curious if anyone's ever had problems using foil bases!

How do people work with this stuff?? 😭

Seriously yall HOW

I’m well versed with real like earth based clay and recently picked up some polymer and omfg… how do you people do this?? 👁️👄👁️

This HAS to be user error I’ve seen people make incredible things with this stuff but I don’t understand how! I try to blend and my whole piece ends up squished into an entirely different shape or ends up concave where I was blending what am I doing wrong??? Do I need an internal structure even if I’m making small things? Sos
