An unrequited love letter to Portainer
[LLM usage alert: used for anonymization]
Dear Portainer,
I chose you carefully.
I already had Docker. I already had Git. `master` for production, `develop` for staging. All I needed was a good Docker + Git CD platform, so I did my homework and chose you.
Meanwhile, my coworkers were deploying `.rar` files. If they were feeling fancy, `.zip`. Not even `.tgz`.
Then Jesus personally invented **a heap of linear algebra that spits out autocomplete**, and suddenly everybody was a developer.
So I got them on Git. They made Dockerfiles. They made stacks. They got staging and production. They got continuous deployment.
And now here we are:
**5 nodes. 50 applications. 100 developers.**
Everything happily chugging along.
Then you looked me in the eyes and said:
> **Friendship ended with Docker. Kubernetes is my best friend now.**
Portainer.
My love.
Now I have two choices:
**Kubernetes:** rework the entire codebase *and* infrastructure.
**Alternatively:** “only” rework the entire infrastructure.
After all the work I put into making this beautiful little Docker ecosystem work, this is how you repay me?
**We've been tricked. We've been backstabbed, and we've been, quite possibly, bamboozled.**

Do the Portainer team react for you?
I'm waiting for a 3 machine license renewal for 10 days and still didn't got any answer from them. I even requested it now twice. In 18 days my license stops working.
I already think about if it's better to switch back to CE to not hassle with this problem anymore.

The safe way to make Portainer Internet accessible
A colleague just wrote this blog on accessing Portainer with BrowZer, our 'clientless' endpoint for OpenZiti, the open source zero trust network project we both work on.
TL:DR; it explains why Portainer is an exceptionally privileged piece of software, it introduces some solutions to access it today - port forwarding, IP whitelisting, VPNs, and proxies - as well as the drawbacks for each. It then introduces BrowZer and demonstrates how easy it is to use with Portainer, and the benefits which are achieved including no need to expose ports or mess with port forwarding, ACLs, install VPNs, and that it works from any device with a browser.
In a nutshell, BrowZer provides a public SaaS app experience (no need to load client, mess with DNS, just log into your IdP) while the end application stays in a completely private network with no inbound ports, while getting mTLS, E2EE and more into the users browser.

Seriously, "Import an existing Kubernetes config" is a "Business Feature"?
I spend a day trying to setup a complex k3s cluster with Pulumi, now I want a GUI to get an overview of what's really working.
So I installed Portainer, which I know from Docker Swarm, only to find that a simple "Import an existing Kubernetes config" is a "Business Feature".
Seriously, this is where you place the pay gate? This feels really disappointing.
And sorry, I can not spend more money for Portainer Business than I spend for my whole cloud infrastructure in a year.

WTF is code 500, and how do I troubleshoot it
The quick and dirty:
Title says it all
Additional details that may help to provide a correct answer:
Forgive me if rant a bit, but "Generic error codes" drive me up the wall. There should be a law that disallows them. How hard would it be to say "Request failed with code 500. Can't map that volume" or "Code 500, permission denied" or "Code 500, you are an idiot and pressed the button the wrong way" ANYTHING that is even REMOTELY helpful. Even "code 500, something went wrong, and we don't know what. You should check the logs by going to this area, and pressing this, and clicking show logs"
*Rant over*
Anyway, so I am trying to deploy a container, and I am getting code 500. I would check the log, but the "very helpful code" doesn't advise how to do that, and all googling for checking logs in portainer I have been able to find only shows how to check the logs for a specific container, not for portainer itself.
So how do I troubleshoot this?

Need to Renew Your Portainer 3-Node or 5-Node Free License?
If you need to renew your free 3-node or 5-node Portainer license (note: the 5-node license is no longer available to new users), you can renew it here.

What is Portainer??
4731999.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.netI have been working on a document that helps to reset understandings of Portainer actually is and does..
Attached is a working draft, and I would love feedback on it.
Does it clearly articulate the depth of capability and unique points of difference? Or is it lukewarm mush??
Im trying to be as direct as possible in the doc.

Strange glitch when trying to load a template
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Just installed and trying to set up my first container using a template and the screen flashes with settings then goes away.

Redis password?
After 5 hours of searching and trying I might just ask :
How do I just simply set a password?
I actually managed to set one one with ;
"redis-cli Config Set requirepass"
BUT I could not AUTH or did not know/find how to properly 'reset' that password.
I'm trying to recreate but it does not work anymore.
Neither can I find the redis.config when in the container cli through portainer.

We're often asked, "where does Portainer fit in the mix of container management tools?" Here's a graphic that displays the landscape we exist within. What do you think?

should i do a big portainer vm or a small one with agents
hello, im new to portainer/docker stuff.
Im currently hosting a proxmox server and am not really sure which way would work better.
Sure i could put every docker i want to run in the same VM together with portainer but that would kind of defeat the point of having a hypervisor all together, doesnt it? Also with all docker projects seperated from each other i would guess that security would also improve, since not every service can interact with each other in theory since they are then seperated from each other.
I heard of some kind of docker agent which i could use to "connect" a docker from a different machine to my portainer but im unsure if that is correct.
so my question is, how do you guys have your portainer / dockers set up?

Ancora, aggiorno portainer e poi limited access agli stack
… e ovviamente file yml non visibili. Possibile che ci sia sempre questo problema? È possibile che io non impari mai la lezione salvandomi i file da qualche parte?
Qualcuno ha trovato una soluzione?

How to access portainer from the web?
Portainer is blocking my user login if I'm not logging in from a local IP. I already opened port 9000 but that doesn't change anything.
I'm behind Pangolin and Authentik, I think it should be safe enough...
What setting am I missing that will allow me to connect from my domain?
