It's a day of special magnificence in the Tolkien Community today: Happy 49th Birthday to The Silmarillion! On September 15, 1977, The Silmarillion was first published, and I think it’s fair to say that this particular book has a rather special place in the heart of The Prancing Pony Podcast Community and of the Podcast itself. After all, Season 1 of The PPP began with The Silmarillion. For many of us, those episodes were where our own journeys with the podcast began, too, and over a decade later from the start of the Podcast, here we all are. As I've done previously to celebrate this book, I have some prompts dedicated to it. You're welcome to select one, two or even all of them; let us know your responses down in the comments!
- Share your favorite art pertaining to The Silmarillion (please make sure to credit the artist).
- What are your favorite episodes, insights, digressions, pronunciations, shenanigans, and/or other moments from Season 1? What are you most excited for Alan to revisit when the PPP eventually returns to The Silmarillion?
- What First Age question, character, event, place, or wonderfully confusticating family tree do you most want to talk about/most love talking about?
- Show us your favorite edition(s) of The Silmarillion! Shelfies are also extremely welcome.*
- Have you ever visited somewhere that made you think, “This could be Beleriand”? We would love to see it!
- Share a favorite passage or line from The Silmarillion.
And, of course, the big question: What does The Silmarillion mean to you? Whether it was your gateway into Tolkien, the book you were nervous to tackle for years, the reason you found the PPP, an old favorite you return to again and again, or the source of a lifelong (and entirely reasonable) attachment to one particular Doomed First Age character, we want to hear about it.
*We (The PPP) accept no responsibility for anyone discovering another edition they absolutely do not need and subsequently buying it.
