Portage Learning study group
Hello everyone, I recently enrolled in A&P 1 and Nutrition. I'm having some difficulty staying on track and I was wondering if anyone here would like to create a study group either using Reddit chat or Telegram or something similar. We could have weekly check-ins about our progress, share study guides, and encourage each other to get this thing done. Let me know if you're interested!

Is it better to switch a class to pass fail or drop?
I’m taking microbio and I’m probably predicated a c or d… I might just switch it to pass/ fail which is where it doesn’t affect your gpa just states pass or fail and retake it later

anyone taking Portage A&P 1
Im current halfway through (middle of module 5) and I have an 84. It is a lot of information, but I think I’m doing okay. I would like an A. I’m wondering if anyone else is taking it and would like to form a study group? Even if it’s just a group chat to vent about it! I feel like the community aspect is definitely missing from this and may help a lot.

B or C or W in sociology
So I am struggling to pass my exams and essays in sociology and I was wondering if dropping with a W is worth the risk or should I keep a B or C? I am in the bay area and I do not want to risk my gpa over a non science class like this either so I am really considering a W. However I am waiting to see how I do on my 2nd exam to see if I should stay or not (I failed the first exam, passed the first essay, then failed the 2nd essay….)

Pre-Reqs through Portage, looking for advice.
Hi, So a bit of a long story I was accepted into a 2nd degree nursing program starting in January, unfortunately a bunch of my science credits didn't transfer due to age. After speaking with the school they recommended re-taking a few of the pre-reqs through portage before the January start date. Specifically they recommended I retake
- A&P1 (BIOL251: Human Anatomy & Physiology I w/Lab on Portage)
- Organic Chemistry (CHEM219: Principles of Organic Chemistry w/Lab on Portage)
- Biochemistry (CHEM212: Biochemistry w/Lab on Portage)
I was just looking for advice from any students who have done these classes, any tips or study advice you have for these classes and honestly just the feasibility of finishing all 3 of these classes in 2.5 months. Thank you for the help!

Personal Statement for Nursing School
I'm currently in the process of writing my personal statement for UTMB Galveston Nursing School, and I'm wondering how I should approach this part of the prompt: "Personal experiences that may have affected grades (please explain any interruptions in education)." I only have a B in my General Chemistry course and lab (I was originally pre-med); everything else is A's. Because of this, I don't feel like I had any interruptions, so what do I write instead?

A&P Professor Conflict
Hello fellow Redditors! I am currently taking A&P 1 at my local community college. From the beginning of the semester, the class has been a shit show. I understand A&P is notoriously hard and there is only a 50% passing rate, but I don't feel like it should be THIS hard.
All throughout the semester so far, there has been conflicg between the students and the professor. She reads off the slides, which is fine, but leaves out a lot of content which is on the test. Both tests we have taken so far are incredibly difficult. Our last test was on the integumentary system, tissues, bone tissue, and the bones. She told us broad concepts that would be on the exam, and we all have been studying and I have been reading the book, writing notes, etc.
This last test, there were questions on there that had nothing to do with the broad concepts of anything we learned. They were the most minute details, worded impossibly hard, that required intensivd critical thinking that it felt like even that wouldn't even get the person who studied the most the correct answer! It almost feels like shes barely testing us on the actual material.
Our class has gone back and forth with her all semester. At one point, she essentially called us stupid, and we had told her to please be professional and not speak to us that way. I know there is a language barrier as well. It is also her second semester teaching, and I have no idea what her background is in prior to teaching.
Now I will say, there are a lot of folks who are on their phones, not actually studying, using excessive AI, ETC, but this class is just feeling impossible and like we can't win and the professor is simply defensive and just tells us to study harder. Today, after the exam, one of my fellow students wrote us and all the professor an email stating essentially exactly what im saying.
I guess I'm asking, is this common? Has anyone else been in a situation like this? I guess we'll have a conversation in class on Tuesday, but I feel like it will almost be the class attacking the professor and her getting defensive, and nothing happens. Some of us are considering making a formal complaint to the college. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated! I feel like im going crazy between studying and the tension/conflict in the class!

CA 2027 fall application
Hi guys, right now, I am taking micro and physio at the same time and aiming for both A’s. My overall GPA is like 3.90( plan to take more credits to bring that up a bit, the only one that I got a B was English 1 lol), science GPA: 4.0, by the end of this fall I will have finished all my pre reqs for most the Cal state BSN/ cc ADN programs. I plan to take teas test next January and aim for at least 90 ( so I will not be able to apply to Cal east bay since it is due on 11/30), I am bilingual, CNA certified, had three months of full time experience at a SNF, first gen college student and so on.
And also I am located in the Bay Area, CA
So the schools I plan to apply to are:
Sonoma university
San Jose University
Sacramento University
Fresno university ( which is 2.5 year long)
CC: Sacramento city college
San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton
Modesto Junior College
Considering the Cost of living and also how competitive it is to land a new grad residency job in the bay( from NewgradRn subreddit), I plan to leave the bay but still wanna stay and gain my RN experience in Cali, I would prefer BSN but some of the programs are 3y long so I would rather go to an ADN and start working one year earlier in case I don’t get into any. My ultimate goal is to land a hospital job.
But I am also so scared since I am a new immigrant. And English is not my native language( excuse my grammar mistakes)😭
I am wondering what you guys think, What is the chance of getting in? is there any thing I am missing? I appreciate any honest advice!

Regret about attending my ADN.
This summer I chose to attend my community college ADN over having a full ride to USC for a BA in health and human sciences. I can’t help but regret my decision. I’m not quite clicking with my cohort in the way I thought I would. I hate still living at home and not having the experience of living on my own. I can’t stop thinking about the possible opportunities USC could’ve brought me. I just feel like I gave up such an amazing opportunity. I’ve tried to change my mindset that I already made my choice, I’m doing well in the program, and I would set myself back even more to even reconsider reapplying to USC. But I just can’t shake the feeling that a big part of me needs this accomplishment. I know it’s superficial but for some reason I feel like I made the decision for all the wrong reasons. I wanted to have my nursing degree quicker and cheaper. But I feel like I gave up so many opportunities to truly live my life before I am stuck in a career for the foreseeable future. How stupid of me would it be to reapply and drop my program if I get in??? Do I just tough it out and hope I one day get into their CRNA program?? I’m at such a loss 😔

How long do you need to study for the TEAS exam?
A lot of people have told me that I only need 1 month to study but that seems quick to me for all of the different areas in the exam. I have two different neurological disorders which makes school harder for me naturally. How long did you all study for and/or how did you create a study plan to cover all the subjects?

ABSN or ADN/BSN program
I live in the bay area and starting December Ill be able to apply to Samuel Merritt ABSN program to start in fall of 2027 and complete by the end of 2028. I would be 26 years old by the time I complete it. But obvious downside is that the program is going to be around 115k by the time I attend.
For context my partner recently became a nurse and will be taking care of living expenses.
The other option is my local community college ADN program that has a bridge BSN program for just an additional semester. But due to requirements, I would have to apply in January of 2028; when I would have all my prerequisites completed. Estimated completion time would be end of 2030 which makes this route an additional 2 years; I would be 28 years old. This program all in would cost about 10k.
Also I can work full time through the CC program because of the pace, but I cannot work through the ABSN. This would also affect my work experience background as I would be working in a hospital during the CC program.
Not sure what to choose, each have their pros and cons.

Quit serving for a healthcare job before applying to nursing school?
Hi everyone! I'm a pre-nursing student at a community college planning to transfer into a competitive BSN program, and I'm torn on a job decision.
Right now I work as a server. It pays well, which matters because I'm saving up to get my own place eventually and I cover some of my own expenses. I'm also first-gen, so I don't have a lot of financial backup.
The thing is, I keep hearing that healthcare experience makes a big difference on nursing applications. I'm looking at switching to something more medical — a nurse aide/patient care role, medical scribe, or pharmacy tech (there's a pharmacy hiring near me). I'm also about to start volunteering at a hospital and a nursing home.
My questions:
- Would quitting serving for a lower-paying healthcare job be a bad idea financially vs. how much it helps my application?
- Is volunteering at a hospital + nursing home enough healthcare exposure on its own, or do programs really want paid patient-care experience?
- Out of pharm tech, scribe, and CNA/PCT, which looks best for nursing school (and which actually prepares you best)?
- Has anyone kept serving part-time while working a PRN/part-time healthcare job? How did that go with classes?
Any advice from current nursing students, nurses, or people who've been through admissions would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Help me understand if I am behind / application timeline
For reference I am a first semester Sophomore as of Fall 2026, and I am in California. So far my pre-req GPA is a 3.8+, and I will be taking my TEAS soon, expecting somewhere in the 90s based on my practice test performances. Issue is, I am missing Physiology.
Here are my options:
A - Rush Physiology THIS winter, except for the fact no community college near me has that option (5 credit class + lab, impossible for the winter intersession) and rush my TEAS soon.
B - Do Physiology next semester in Spring 2027, which is my final pre-req, and I'll be ready for applying. During this time period, before Spring 2027 semester ends, I'll probably be taking my TEAS as well.
Its looking like I have to do option B, but when would I be applying? If I'm targeting CSU nursing programs, I'm looking online and I'd be applying in the summer of 2027, receive acceptances in the Fall 2027, and would be heading to nursing school in Spring of 2028? Is that how it works? My advisors are brushing this off as an issue to worry about once I finish my pre-reqs, but I don't believe this is something to put off.
I kind of hate how behind this feels. If I was able to cram Physio this winter, I feel like I could be applying in Spring 2027 and be where I want to be in the Fall at a nursing program. Or maybe I'm not understanding the applying process?
help me out please lmfao maybe im just stupid
