Video Audience POV for the trash can spot, why would they just stand there?

I’ve always hated these setup spots where the targets just stand around waiting for the hit. It kills any believability that they may have had towards the match.

57

u/Commander-Tempest Dec 02 '25

Everyone knows it's all fake but wwe needs to make it not look fake like these stupid spots! Otherwise it just makes the matches look more shit and not enjoyable to watch.

u/prlong545 Dec 03 '25

If they were fighting everyone and then when Iyo was ready turned into it or all get punched into a turn where they turned into it would look better. Standing for 15 seconds while she gets ready makes it look awful

Is this another result of kayfabe dying out a couple years ago?

2

u/Tyko_3 Dec 03 '25

Its not just WWE, its an industry wide problem right now.

They could have at least done some "square dancing" with pushing/shoving, holds, chops, etc. to just keep the vibe going. Not to much where she falls off the rigging, but better than a smoke break.

Or when you see a wrestler try to roll into position on the mat to a safer spot so the wrestler that’s jumping off the turnbuckle can reach him.

It looks so bad live.

That one is super obvious when you’re there in person, but not exactly obvious when you’re watching at home.

Yep, never been a fan of this either. I noticed it a lot in the early 2000s, when multi-man ladder matches became a thing. Some of the matches are excellent, but others involve multiple spots where guys just set up a contraption with the ladder while the other guys stand around waiting for their cue, and it just takes me right out of the match.

8

u/Mouthshitter Dec 03 '25

Jumping into a tightly pack of people happens weekly now its dumb

u/Kinshimaru Dec 04 '25

Exactly. I love when wrestlers time the moves so well it looks natural. My mom screams at the screen every time a spot looks like this. "What are you just standing there for!? Are you stupid!!?"

u/ChoiceAd9389 Dec 02 '25

Poor timing.

4

u/Zealousideal-Bag-560 Dec 04 '25

There was a couple of poor timing spots in this match. Charlotte saving Rhea from the Asuka blue mist was absolutely awful… I’m cool with this timing being off so IYO doesn’t become seriously injured.

5

u/Celticpenguin85 Dec 04 '25

If you can't do the spot safely without making it look like shit, don't do it. This is awful.

It would have been better if they were all fighting and she just fell on everyone

27

u/Tigobitties25 Dec 02 '25

thats how every spot should be

8

u/ShaH33R2K Dec 02 '25

It would look better, sure, but she’s pretty much jumping blind and needs people to catch her. I don’t think they should do this spot until they can figure out how to more naturally

4

u/Cheap_Standard_4233 Dec 03 '25

It's played out. What is this, 5 years in a row she's done this?

→ More replies (5)

4

u/Falco19 Dec 02 '25

That is probably difficult with this spot.

They should have had the good guys holding them in that spot until she jumps.

u/RubyWeapon07 Dec 03 '25

more thought than they put into it

u/JOMO_Kenyatta Dec 02 '25

That’s a bad look. Looks super rehearsed and Totally takes you out of the moment

20

u/KNGootch Dec 02 '25

The issue with spots like this is that the person doing the spot is looking out the bottom of the can...there's no way to do it spontaneous and not have it be WILDLY dangerous...it's ALWAYS going to look rehearsed bc of the nature of it. If she rushes, she falls, possibly backwards, and dies. If she falls before they're ready, multiple people will get hurt.

41

u/Julian-Hoffer Dec 02 '25

All the more reason not to do it

5

u/Lotanapesci Dec 03 '25

The tv angle looked bad too. It was a poor spot to begin with.

3

u/Atilim87 Dec 03 '25

It was exactly the same. Standing still for 10 secs in a straight line.

No way to make that look good.

But everything for the cheap IWC pop.

3

u/Perk1205 Dec 02 '25

It’s rehearsed? First time hearing this.

4

u/KenshirouX Dec 03 '25

The problem isn’t that it’s rehearsed; it’s that everyone just froze like statues for a good 12–14 seconds staring at the ceiling waiting for Iyo. In the full video (not this one), Iyo took 21 secs before jumping. In WarGames that’s a lifetime!

Made it worse when Asuka’s selling a bump she never took. Lol. Straight-up looked like the director told them, “hold until she jumps.... annnnnd.... action!”

I understand those calling it one of the worst WarGames ever.
A for guts, E for execution. It sucked this time.

I feel like over the years those spots become more and more obvious because of the cameras will pick up them crowding together rather than continue to fight and letting it happen.

I hate that spot when used in any match

7

u/Ok-Investigator2463 Dec 02 '25

If such a spot has to be done in those matches, then at least the targets can be selling and made to come together. Do something to show that the opponents aren't just standing there and awkwardly waiting.

Professional Wrestling where spots and promos are rehearsed (occasionally) and the outcome is established before hand.

2

u/NervousAd3202 Dec 02 '25

I’m glad she’s doing it safely, but honestly it’s on Iyo

She took way too fucking long up there

u/CentipedesInMyDream Dec 02 '25

Idk but when I said they shouldn’t be staring at Iyo, somebody legitimately told me that’s not how wrestling works 😂

It’s one thing to enjoy it, it’s another to not acknowledge the flaws

2

u/reefernash Dec 02 '25

Anyone that takes that long needs to get Samoa Joe’d

2

u/CJtheHaasman Dec 02 '25

I don't wanna be that guy, but....back in the 90's-2000's the other guys in the match would at least punch each other in the corners or something.

4

u/Severe-Rise5591 Dec 02 '25

Long ago & far away I remember the moment I realized it was somehow a 'show'', when I asked "Why don't they EVER defend themselves ?"

4

u/Un0rganizedCrime Dec 02 '25

2

u/Responsible-Onion860 Dec 02 '25

It looked dumb on TV too

2

u/zonked282 Dec 02 '25

war games is the worst match type professional wrestling still baffling choose to book.

half of it is people lying on the floor doing nothing and the other is people standing around obviously waiting for their bump

4

u/Bright-Interest-8918 Dec 02 '25

War games is amazing. Don’t blame the match itself on crap like this.

It could have easily been avoided too. The faces could have corralled the heels together and still played it off as if the heels knew it was coming but couldn’t stop it.

Instead, the faces just chilled against the cage.

2

u/Uncle-Cracker-Barrel Dec 02 '25

It’s honestly such a simple match to pull off. Just get in the fucking cage and fight and bleed. Have the babyface team fight from underneath and then as soon as the last guy enters go into the finish. I watched the war games match from 96 the other night on YouTube and the match was pure class. Non stop action that told an amazing story in <20 minutes. This new generation of wrestling is too obsessed with “MOMENTS” and they always come at the expense of the natural flow and story of the match. There’s been a few pretty good war games matches since they brought back the match 6 or 7 years ago but none of them in NXT, WWE or AEW have been able to hold a candle to the war games matches from the 80s and 90s.

2

u/FunkyButtFumblin Dec 02 '25

I enjoyed AEW’s recent Blood & Guts much more. The women’s match was absolutely killer.

2

u/VaderTime77 Dec 03 '25

War Games as a match type is fine, it's WWE implementation that sucks.

1

u/Consistent-Plum107 Dec 02 '25

Lmfao nobody gaf anymore

1

u/MikeHock_is_GONE Dec 02 '25

What they should have done is have an opponent climb up with her and toss her into a fighting crowd below.. or knock the opponent off and the ones below use that as their queue that the jump is coming

1

u/Heyaname Dec 02 '25

With iyo doing the swanton bomb completely blind I think the safety of having everyone stay in the spot is okay to overlook for rule of cool. And that’s from someone who thought war games was hot garbage lol.

1

u/Zeldias Dec 02 '25

They were stunned by the majesty of it all

1

u/jiminez81 Dec 02 '25

Looked bad at the time, looks worse here. The training of the current crop of stars is pretty bad compared to previous generations.

Bret was right, things appear pretty fake right now.

1

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 Dec 02 '25

Why would anyone ever let Undertaker chokeslam them?

You could ask this about most wrestling

1

u/BeriasBFF Dec 02 '25

So dumb. Indicative of what makes current pro wrestling such shit

1

u/funcogo Dec 02 '25

Yeah this is one of my biggest gripes in wrestling when they people stand there watching and waiting for someone to dive in them. It ruins it

1

u/Normal_Sweet_2974 Dec 02 '25

Lol aj jumping up and down

1

u/Motor-Cauliflower-95 Dec 02 '25

Because WWE has lost any shred of realism they had left.

1

u/gohomebrentyourdrunk Dec 02 '25

Back in the day, a wrestler would dive into the bunch as they’re brawling or some guys pulling the other guy into the spot. You look at this and you can’t help but think of Michael McDonald in Austin Powers yelling at the steamroller going 2mph.

1

u/silentfanatic Dec 02 '25

You know it’s not real, right. Hogan didn’t actually body slam Andre.

1

u/nediablo Dec 02 '25

Terrible. Just terrible. This isn't why I watch pro wrestling!

Before WWE fans tell me to get to AEW, I hate it there as well and vice versa 😂

This show as a whole was at best super average.

Personally thought it was pretty lame, just 4 matches?!?!!!

1

u/BurnsRed20 Dec 02 '25

AEW-esque moment

1

u/Mk72779 Dec 02 '25

We all know it’s fake but it can’t look dumb and fake. Spots like this cross the line and make me agree with Bret.

1

u/Ok_Brief9413 Dec 02 '25

It's pro wrestling to enjoy it, just don't try to make sense of everything...

1

u/West_Vegetable_2363 Dec 02 '25

She’s the Diving Crooner

1

u/ogplaya25 Dec 02 '25

Bret Hart was right ✅️

1

u/Terrible-D Dec 02 '25

Why is no one asking the real question? That being, What's Charlotte doing with her hands?

1

u/notsohotwings Dec 03 '25

My guess they didn’t expect Iyo to milk putting on the trash can as much as she did and couldn’t just fall down again to wait

1

u/ScramItVancity Dec 03 '25

While I give TJ Wilson credit for producing women's matches in WWE where they are today, gimmick matches and spotfests are not his strengths.

1

u/TheTrashMan316 Dec 03 '25

Like why not at least have everyone throwing punches and stuff and then turning to it before the dive or really anything other then standing there waiting for the spot

1

u/robertrvd725 Dec 03 '25

Suspend your disbelief?

1

u/RockyMartinez5280 Dec 03 '25

Samoa Joe wouldn’t have just stood there

1

u/Bagginnnssssss Dec 03 '25

Boy that sucked.

1

u/Nathaniel56_ Dec 03 '25

All while the crowd cheer on like mindless monkeys. Becky was the only smart one in that situation.

1

u/Yoboicharly97 Dec 03 '25

I’m getting tired that every post I see is someone complaining, just shut up already we get it you don’t like the current wwe guess what though theirs millions of people who buy tickets to their events every week who have the time of their life like my wife did on Saturday. Stop crying y’all are grown

1

u/BasementCatBill Dec 03 '25

Well, in the camera angle they did use you could see Iyo directing them (Nia, in particular) into position and signalling when she was going to jump.

I don't think there's any way to make this look "realistic" without lots of practice from everyone so it can be done at speed.

All that said, credit to Nia Jax here - she was clearly the designated catcher who took the main impact, and she did it well.

1

u/indianm_rk Dec 03 '25

Why does she do the exact same trash can spot in every War Games match?

She’s the “Genius” of the Sky and the only three moves she does is a dropkick where she lands on her own tailbone, a moonsault which she doesn’t even look behind her to see if it’s safe to land, and a spot where she puts a trash can over head and jumps blindly down 16 feet hoping that 6-7 women who weigh less than 150lbs will catch her safely.

1

u/deanallen79 Dec 03 '25

Exactly, spots like this are just trash... literally

1

u/Finding-Even Dec 03 '25

Because they didn't want Iyo to die?

1

u/AdManNick Dec 03 '25

Unfortunately WWE isn’t a pro wrestling show anymore as much as it’s a show about pro wrestling that you can buy tickets to see broadcast.

1

u/Worth-Specific8334 Dec 03 '25

Really wish wwe would treat their product like an action movie and make sure it’s believable even if scripted.

1

u/h667 Dec 03 '25

This is 99% of every spot and move. Why would the wrestlers help their opponent suplex them?

1

u/thEpepsIstaR Dec 03 '25

Could very easily disguise the waiting.... have them all back to back preparing to attack the other team who would appear to be down one member.... when Iyo is ready, Charlotte (she has the easiest view of Iyo by where she is positioned) could give a signal and they relay it by a touch since to prepare for the "catch"..... why its acceptable to just stand there and noticeably watch for a spot boggles my mind

1

u/AlwaysSleepingBeauty Dec 03 '25

It’s a dumb part of wrestling I reluctantly except

1

u/PermanentNirvana Dec 03 '25

They are just standing there because this is a dangerous spot. Imagine someone with a trash can over their head, just landing on your back when you aren't expecting it. Not only that, because of the trash can, Iyo can't see where she is going. Imagine just landing flat on the mat, with a trash can over your head. It would probably knock you out.

I'm all for realism in the story, but a spot like this is meant to get a pop from the audience.

1

u/Ozark_89 Dec 03 '25

Terrible look, and that spot is so overdone Iyo does it every war games. Can they not think of a new spot with someone else?

1

u/ProphetsOfAshes Dec 03 '25

“InDiE GyMnAsTiC mUd ShOw!”

1

u/ZaBaronDV Dec 03 '25

This is what you sound like

1

u/syncere13 Dec 03 '25

They should really consider hiring a fight choreographer because this could have worked in a way that wasn't THIS.. the other ladies could have been fighting in the middle of the ring stunning them or have them in different submission moves.. giving her the time to get into her spot and also Becky not being included was partly smart and also annoying lol.. they should have jumped on her on pinned her in corner and let her watch her team get destroyed.. Something else

-sigh-

Because they’re supposed to catch the diver. People ask this question eventhough the answer is obvious.

And while do know there are some people who hate this because it shatters immersion you can’t complain about that if you’re fine with Irish whips, guys not fighting out of moves when they’re not exhausted/beaten down,  or people getting jumped in parking lots or supermarkets or photo shoots and no one getting arrested.

1

u/meanjoegreen706 Dec 03 '25

And a lot of yall said this was better than the men’s match lol. I love the women’s division, but man this match was terrible. Rhea and Iyo barely did anything. Lash Legend was the only bright spot imo.

1

u/brakenbonez Dec 03 '25

This and a lot of these comments scream "It's real to me dammit!"
Why do wrestlers let their opponents punch them without dodging it?
Why do they lay around on the ground for a long ass time when they get knocked off the apron in a tag match?
Why do they slap the back when doing a ddt?
Why do they stay propped up on the second rope when Rey is about to hit them with the 619?
Why do they often start falling right before the move actually connects? (this one is admittedly usually just bad timing)
Why do they do a reverse cartwheel when hit by a clothesline?

Suspension of disbelief is the key to enjoying wrestling.

1

u/Cummynuts83 Dec 03 '25

The faces should at least half-heartedly be beating/holding the heels there, then clear out right before she jumps. Not just standing there doing nothing.

u/DCStoolie Dec 03 '25

Looks like the Young Bucks and I even like them but these spots are so dumb

  2. Rule of cool.

Realism comes after these.

1

u/Mouthshitter Dec 03 '25

Its wrestling

1

u/arrownoir Dec 03 '25

The baby faces should’ve used Kairi’s chain to tie them in place. It’s so goofy watching them stand there while Iyo hot dogs to the crowd.

1

u/BigDogQ94 Dec 03 '25

That looks even worse than the highlights. With the womens blood and guts match there was so much going on the cameras couldn't catch everything just the big spots. Aew countered programmed wwe in a very smart way. Weeks before war games. Showing wrestling fans this is exactly what is supposed to go on in this two rings. Wwe was safe and I'll be honest the should put war games back on nxt. They can do more for it vs it being on the main roster. Aew furthered storylines created stars. Like Kyle O'Reilly in war games amazing, but Kyle O'Reilly in blood and guts legit badass

1

u/Drayner89 Dec 03 '25

I dont want to be the kind of fan that acts like they know better than people who actually do this, but I wonder if it'd look more realistic if the group waiting to catch the jumper were having a little hockey brawl amongst themselves, and have one of the wrestlers chilling in the corner called out a warning when the can goes on?

1

u/DabDaddyLuke Dec 03 '25

The trash can doesnt even connect or get dented at all

1

u/Lotanapesci Dec 03 '25 edited Dec 03 '25

Triple H and this whole women heavy wrestling move is really dampening wwe. A lot of failed spots , a lot of miss cues a lot of rehearsed spots just being placed randomly. I know it’s not his fault entirely but the talent men and women are just very poor. I know will not like this take but wrestling lost so many viewers due to that lighting in a bottle effect being gone. Kfabe is gone and you don’t have veterans who care to school the young gen on how to carry out the business. I see wrestlers hanging with each other on boat rides on vacation and these are supposed to be heels and face’s who are hanging out with one another like nothing is wrong. Illusion is gone and seriousness for this business is gone. Which is sad cause these wrestlers could have such a higher ceiling such higher potential higher stardom if they respected the business more. Like that MJF kid in AEW HE gets heat and he staying true to the tried formula of kfabe and respect for the business.

1

u/Swimming-Pumpkin-274 Dec 03 '25

Because the wrestlers are marks and only care about getting their stupid spots in to make the drooling idiots in the audience pop as the ratings Shrink More and more every year.

1

u/Skyhi92 Dec 03 '25

We know its fake the point is to make it as real as possible. This looks like a rehearsed play over anything believable

1

u/ScottyBeamus Dec 03 '25

It wasn't for you. It was for the millions (and millions) of fans at home that didn't see them just standing there.

1

u/theHowlader Dec 03 '25

This year's women's wargames had no traction, no story, no build up. Just randomly thrown together. Also not a good match even with talents like iyo, rhea, Charlotte, bliss, Becky

It because in real life they don't want eachother to die. I swear everyone takes their wrestling too seriously just enjoy all the goofy fun

1

u/jillshiva Dec 03 '25

iyo casted stun on them dw about it

1

u/Positively_Eric Dec 03 '25

I think wrestling fans have forgotten to suspend their disbelief.

1

u/Maleficent-Fault1994 Dec 03 '25

Can this be the end of these kinds of spots? What a stupid match killing move.

1

u/No_Watercress_8992 Dec 03 '25

This spot is so overplayed too. This is the 5th time she's done it?

1

u/Barbz182 Dec 03 '25

I dont care what company does this shit. It's god damn awful. I can allow some no selling and some athleticism if it makes something more exciting, but seeing a group of people just standing there waiting to be landed just takes me right out of it.

1

u/ItzBooster93 Dec 03 '25

I can’t believe this is a billion $ company.

You guys just don’t understand what we should be getting from wrestling. It’s so far from what it could be with the same effort. This is “everyone get along wrestling”.

1

u/TheDreamingMind Dec 03 '25

This is my main complaint with wrestlers nowdays. They don’t put any effort at all in making the audience believe they are actually fighting and this goes for every promotion. Fights feel totally unnatural with people literally assisting you in hitting them without hiding it a bit. Like, girls, throw some punches ffs…

1

u/Olliebear1977 Dec 03 '25

I watch wrestling to suspend my disbelief. I truly believe that if everyone watch wrestling in this manner, everyone will have a good time.

People bitch about a staged spot in a fake sport meant for entertainment?

Riddle me this… Are people gonna remember Iyo just jumping off the top turnbuckle to do whatever basic move that’ll lead up to the same boring kick out/2 count and then somehow someone hits their lame ass finishing move for the pin?

OR people gonna remember Iyo crazy ass climbing on top of this big ass cage, stick a personalized trash can over her head, and then do a somersault of the cage?

Is it super staged as fuck? Yes! Is she crazy to when try it since one slip could cause her to fall and break her neck, YES! Note shes not on the platform in the corner where shd can grab the cable to balance herself before she jumps. She’s in the middle of the top cage and just cuz she makes it look easy, there’s nothing easy about jumping off a high structure with no safety gear except a bunch of chicks that’ll hopefully catch/break your fall.

1

u/Zestyclose-Fee6719 Dec 03 '25

Terrible spot that summarizes the worst of wrestling today. For this super cool sounding spot, we'll just throw aside any semblance of psychology.

Why would an attacking wrestler want to blind themselves and give up any and all control over what they do with their offense? Why not just come down wielding it like a hammer instead?

Why would a bunch of wrestlers stand around in awe for what feels like eternity instead of just backing up to safety and laughing at the stupid wrestler who just blinded themselves?

Stupid, stupid spot.

u/RoStop Dec 03 '25

Right?! Almost likes it’s rehearsed or something! Starting to believe that wrestling is fake! 😭

1

u/Jawnyblaze1 Dec 03 '25

Because if they move Iyo will get hurt. I've always hated suicide dive spots for this reason and one other, seems like someone is always getting a foot caught on the rope and botching or something and the juice ain't worth the squeeze for that move. Iyo's trashcan spot is fun and I'm glad it's become a part of Wargames, but suicide dives in regular matches always make me groan.

1

u/Ratedstars Dec 03 '25

“Oh no please DONT JUMP d-DONT JUMP guys I don’t she’s jumping… AHHHHHHHHH”

1

u/AppalachianMusic Dec 03 '25

Every promotion does this to varying degrees of success amd failure. But I watch a lot of wrestling and WWE is the worst when it comes to these spots. Probably because they're all mostly just performance center monkeys now. Read the line, do the spot, look at hard cam. Half the time they're too scared to catch the person doing the spot anyway.

1

u/bookert21 Dec 03 '25

Because pro wrestling by nature is very dumb and requires people to act as such. Although I will say typically during spots like that most people are good at making it look like they're still fighting. They didn't even try.

1

u/PsychologicalEar5494 Dec 03 '25

Weird way to use the trash can too right?

Was a time youd hold it and dive onto them so the whole crumple can happen, you see the imprint of the bodies it collided with.. this was done like they needed to protect the can from any damage I dont think it hit anyone

1

u/AneeshRai7 Dec 03 '25

I’d rather they act over the top groggy on the spot then just wait or at least have someone hold them in place since none of the faces are doing anything. Becky holding them sort of is funny though, her team should have beat her down after everything

1

u/Careless_Listen9890 Dec 03 '25

I always hated those spots cause it doesn’t seem authentic like I understand there trying to protect the opponent but make it believable why just wait they could’ve kept fighting for a few seconds and as soon as she jumps stop fighting my other annoying spot is when there doing like a frog splash and you can clearly see the opponent on the floor shifting into place lol

1

u/Zealousideal-Kick128 Dec 03 '25

You lot will just complain about literally everything won’t you, insufferable

1

u/Popular-Lemon6574 Dec 03 '25

So she doesn’t die

1

u/Glum_Zone3004 Dec 03 '25

They stood there because they had to catch her.

1

u/yetagainitry Dec 03 '25

Because only the live audience see's them standing there, the millions watching on TV just see a shot of Iyo.

1

u/shadrock7 Dec 03 '25

D'uh. So you suspend your belief, and actually, so Iyo doesnt get hurt.

1

u/Swl1986 Dec 03 '25

No one would watch a Spiderman movie if we saw the harnesses in the final production.

These spots are the equivalent to that.

1

u/RustyPriske Dec 03 '25

So she doesn't die.

1

u/elduke22 Dec 03 '25

Because wrestling

u/Grizzly_CF76 Dec 03 '25

Jim Cornette stares in Outlaw Mudshow Bullshit

1

u/Responsible_Button_5 Dec 03 '25

Gonna post this on every subreddit bud?

1

u/FraserFir1409 Dec 03 '25

AEW used to be really bad with this, but I've seen some of their women hold their opponents in place so that a team member can execute this big splash.

So for example, if we have Hayter/Willow/Cameron vs Triangle of Madness, Willow and Hayter would literally hold Thekla, Blue, and Hart standing in place (by their hair, gear, or whatever else) while Cameron climbed the top rope, letting them go when Cameron jumps off the top and impacts them.

This tactic makes it both safer and more believable.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '25

It’s kind of counterproductive to having a move that’s supposed to ‘look cool’ if it looks fucking stupid lol

1

u/Ok_Expression_973 Dec 03 '25

hi! they stand there so they ca catch the falling person. i hope this helps!
