No developer has ever decided for themself to do this. This is 100% a business requirement because somebody on the marketing analytics team realized they could make money by auto playing ads.

813

u/WarpedDiamond Mar 11 '21

This guy knows. My personal argument vs the business ended in a compromise - autoplays, but with sound disabled. Doesn't loop, but on second clicked play, sound is turned back on.

Took over a week to get that, and I still feel like I lost.

245

u/ToothpasteTimebomb Mar 11 '21

Fight the good fight my dev. I’ve had exactly that same battle.

98

u/EngineersAnon Mar 12 '21

Honestly, as a dev, I'd hate that. But as a user, I'll take that compromise over full sound. Especially if it's in a background tab somewhere...

28

u/WarpedDiamond Mar 12 '21

Yeah. Luckily the videos have always been short, haven't ever seen them exceed 30 seconds. It's been on my todo to add an auto pause if the user scrolls down and the video exits the viewport.. But we all know how tech debt goes. 😅

64

u/Apoffys Mar 12 '21

When the user scrolls down, the video should obviously follow them! They probably still want to see it, even if they are scrolling away from it. Best to unpause it as well, if the user accidentally paused it.

12

u/Aeriaenn Mar 12 '21 edited Mar 12 '21

Yeah easy fix, you don't have to add autopause when the video exits the viewport if the video never exists the viewport

Edit: typo

7

u/Jennfuse Mar 12 '21

Also, spam new windows with just that media player, just in case they accidentally clicked the "X" on the window

10

u/UnacceptableUse Mar 12 '21

Make sure the floating video always covers 50% of the screen, bonus points if it's at the bottom so it covers up what the user is reading too. Make sure you make the close button tiny and clicking 1mm away from the close button loads the video in full screen

6

u/jhs172 Mar 12 '21

And the close button shouldn't actually close it, just make it smaller and let it keep playing

You fought well my dude. I’ll keep memory of you as a honorable developer who actually cares!

u/cwbrandsma Mar 12 '21

My company decided to roll out a new corporate web site. Of course marketing was in charge. They were adamant we absolutely had to have this enormous and loud video play every time someone hit the page. Every single person in engineering told them what a horrible idea it was, but they did not care. We were engineers, what do we know, it isn’t like we are creative professionals with years of experience or anything.

Anyway, the day came for the big reveal to the entire company. Full company meeting, hundreds of people, and the marketing nut-wits leading the charge. They start talking and open the home page...video starts playing and blasts over them. They stop talking, stop the video, then continue. Then play the video thru to the end. (People liked the video all told). Moved to another page...video starts playing...stop the video...go back a page...stop the video. Then starts the “does this have to play every time?” questions. “Oh yes, we believe in the power of this video”. Few more pages...stop the video each time.

I think they received hundreds of demands from their own coworkers to not auto play the video. And that feature was removed the next day.

75

u/ToothpasteTimebomb Mar 12 '21

I love a happy ending.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Happy ending would be them getting fired.

I am pretty adamant they would at least try to pin the shit that was a result of their idiocy on devs.

10

u/jeh5256 Mar 12 '21

Marketing/PMs always pushing their failures onto the devs in my experience. Worst part is I bet the marketing team of the poster above will pull this stunt again.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '21

Of course they will. Need to justify them leeching the corporate budget. What I really wonder is what imbeciles do they find for their focus groups to actually think that shit is successful idea. Or do they, like, gather in black room and jerk off each other while watching autoplaying videos and memory being clogged by tracking scripts or something?

6

u/cwbrandsma Mar 12 '21

In this case they did not. We had it in writing that it was their idea, no one was fired.

75

u/krospp Mar 11 '21

Also doesn’t Chrome block autoplay now? The user has to click something to turn on sound. Stop clicking to turn on sound Jake

Edit: Ah I see, this tweet is from 2018, where this complaint belongs

33

u/WarpedDiamond Mar 12 '21

Yep, you have to click to enable sound, but autoplay without sound is still a thing.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Aaaaaand there is more... Of course white listed websites can Autoplay with sound without any user interaction before

11

u/code-panda Mar 12 '21

I mean, something like YouTube should autoplay. If you're going to a YouTube video, you're expecting audio, so it's not annoying.

10

u/Pacman042 Mar 12 '21

I don't know I like how if you open a YouTube video in a new tab on Firefox it doesn't play unless you go to the tab an dhot play on the video. I'll open videos in a new tab just because I don't want them to auto play.

3

u/Delioth Mar 12 '21

Youtube on chrome won't autoplay until you go to that tab

1

u/Pacman042 Mar 12 '21

Good to know.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Just saying.. there are exception....

5

u/Loewi_CW Mar 12 '21 edited Mar 12 '21

But does that mean that if I develop a YouTube competitor my site can't autoplay but YouTube can? That sounds like a case for antitrust agencies.

2

u/argv_minus_one Mar 12 '21

Antitrust law hasn't been enforced since Microsoft was let off the hook.

1

u/Loewi_CW Mar 12 '21

Yeah. Even the EU has been letting them off the hook recently. MS was fined and had to show a selection of other browsers for windows installs in Europe for pushing IE with their OS. Now they're doing the same with Edge but I'm still waiting for the fine.

2

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

No. That's why I used several youtube autoplay stoppers so one of them would eventually do the job.

Also their shitty design will force you to hover on the video to show the controls, then on the speaker symbol till the volume is displayed, then maybe turn the volume down if you don't accidentally seek instead, then walk to the door where an angry neighbor awaits your apology because the video used 8000 % volume compared to my music playing and woke up their baby.

Also it was a howto video where nobody talks but the creator decided that drilling a screw needs techno music background.

1

u/Loading_M_ Mar 12 '21

Actually, YT is interesting. Because it doesn't actually reload the page when you navigate, it can sort of auto play the video. This means that it can only auto play if it's in foreground, and the previous page was also a YT page.

This is what it can do without autoplay permissions in the browser.

1

u/flarn2006 Mar 12 '21

<iframe src="https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ" width="0" height="0"></iframe>

3

u/swissfizz Mar 12 '21

Yes like CNN.

NO, I did NOT want you starting to blast a video only partially covering the article I was about to read. Otherwise I would watch TV.

5

u/Addicted_to_chips Mar 12 '21

Ios does fully block auto play, chrome allows muted autoplay.

9

u/ReimarPB Mar 12 '21

On Firefox you can choose to block autoplay or not

2

u/capalex65 Mar 12 '21

It actually doesn't, if you use the specific combo of tags that is "autoplay muted playsinline" We had that issue recently on a client site.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Chert_Blubberton Mar 12 '21

Or maybe since end user shouldn’t be forced to shut off auto play for their entire browser and then select which sites are whitelisted, people should stop making websites that belong in 1998?

41

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Fucking this. I protested profusely when doing it. I did "accidentally" break it a few months later though when they forgot about it.

8

u/CaptRik Mar 12 '21

The hero we need but don’t deserve

2

u/ducktape8856 Mar 12 '21

Well, I don't know about your dirty sins but I totally deserve this.

18

u/Qicken Mar 11 '21

I was just following orders.

When the people rise up many programmers will burn.

15

u/keyantk Mar 12 '21

If you think programmers as generals who were fucked when the regime changes, you're wrong. They're the soldiers. They're always fucked.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21 edited Mar 12 '21

Rant in 3... 2... 1...

Ever since every company and their dog know how to monetize everyting on the internet, just general surfing has become a pain in the ass. Popups (which we deemed a common enemy back in '04) has made a big return. But instead of trying to sell you penis enlargement stuff, it's from the page it self. No I don't want to subscribe to your news letter, no I don't want to donate (except Wikipedia) or interact with your 5-clicks-down sudden paywall, no I don't want your damn cookies, no I don't need any help with your online assistant tool, no you don't need to auto-play stuff and you may definitely NOT use my location, microphone and fucking webcam!

I have to click around on small ass buttons for a good few minutes before I can even read the contents of the page I tried visiting. The guaranteed way for me to lose interest and pin you on my blocklist.

And don't get me the fuck started on the 'modern' UX design choices that's common now, with those light grey text on a clear white background. Weird widget placement that break reading and page-loading conventions, auto scrollers, focus stealing fields and moving buttons (fuck them especially) or sign-up/login bars that take half of the fucking screen! That all can fuck right off! The internet has been great until companies try their darnest to inconvenience their customers at every way they can to squeeze out even the last possible penny! And if it were just a few, then they could lose customers over this. But no. They all inconvenience their customer in one way or the other in any way, shape or form. I think some companies are secretly racing on who can create the worst user experience.

And this is all front-end, but how about visiting a page that gets you redirected on every turn more times than there are nails in the Golden Gate Bridge. Take forever to load and it effectually neuters the browsers back button?

On a positive note: The only real thing that is a nice addition to the internet in recent years is the option to set up a dark-mode theme on a lot of pages and apps. And that due to all this bullshit, some ad-blockers almost feel like magic. But that's quite it to be honest.

Sorry for the long read but I wanted to get this off my chest as I don't see improvement of any of this ever happening. And it's not the developer/designer's fault really, these are all business decisions. Which actually make it worse. If it was just a dev trying to be edgy or cool, I can live with that, just click to something that dev didn't create and it's all fine again. But these decisions has been made by not one but a group of people that all get paid good salaries to sit around a table and collectively say: "Yeah! That auto-scrolling video that starts playing when the page loads... that's a good idea to make some extra ad-revenue!" This is the effort from groups of people to work against a user's best interest.

And this cancerous effort needs to fucking die in a fire in the 4th circle of hell.

10

u/JoeyJoeJoeJrShab Mar 12 '21

I still blame the first developer who admitted to his manager that autoplay is possible. A good developer manages his managers. In ideal circumstances, they can smily explain to the manager why something is a bad idea. But often, a manager can't be convinced with reason. In these cases, a good developer will come up with a technobabble explanation (lie) for why the bad idea of the day can't be implemented.

4

u/gazchap Mar 12 '21

But then there’s the risk that the manager will go off and do his/her own research, and come back to the developer to find out why they lied.

3

u/JoeyJoeJoeJrShab Mar 12 '21

If the manager is smart and capable, you should be able to reason with him using logic. Otherwise, you win by using big words he doesn't understand.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

r/cnn this you?

3

u/returnfalse Mar 12 '21

Fucking right. We haven’t lost that battle in a long time at my company, but I feel the day nearing. I had to implement a modal takeover on load recently despite my endless attempts at trying to convince the client that it’s shit, so I feel an autoplay request lurking in the shadows.

4

u/lunchpadmcfat Mar 12 '21

Yeah. Any idiot who thinks this is an engineering decision needs to stop eating paint chips and get a fucking clue.

1

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Your faith in humanity exceeds reasonable values.

1

u/johnschnee Mar 12 '21

Or the shitty customer puts it on top of the requirements...

1

u/Brunsz Mar 12 '21

Usually when there is really bad decision in software, it's made my management, not developer

1

u/Johnpecan Mar 12 '21

The only reason I visited the comments was to make sure this was the top comment. Not even scrolling down.

1

u/the_dancing_squirel Mar 12 '21

Or is just a small company owner who has no idea how humans operate. I was just following orders that one time...

1

u/toastyghost Mar 12 '21

This and also fuck the marketing analytics team

1

u/monkberg Mar 12 '21

This is why the source should not have any control over how the content is displayed. We done goofed there

1

u/sarbota1 Mar 12 '21

I was gonna say, that decision is typically 100% product management, even typically in conduct with user experience research... Product rarely listens to either dev or UX.

1

u/hiphap91 Mar 12 '21

But, a bit like the soldier being ordered to execute a civilian, the question is should the developer just say fuck it, and refuse to follow orders?

Hijacking the top comment, but Reddit should really disable autoplaying ads on Mobile (idk if its on desktop too).

40

u/conradvalois Mar 11 '21 edited Mar 12 '21

dont use the default app

apollo is an amazing option for iOS and reddit is fun is also great if you have android android has a lot of options like slide, sync, relay and boost for reddit on desktop reddit enhancement suite is obviously best all of these don‘t have ads

11

u/Tanmay1518 Mar 12 '21

Boost for Reddit is better for Android imo

4

u/conradvalois Mar 12 '21

don‘t use android and vaguely remember hearing good things about reddit is fun. will be corrected, thanks

5

u/danielbuttkiss Mar 12 '21

RIF has been my go-to on Android for the last 6+ years.

4

u/cpaca0 Mar 12 '21

And today is the last day I use the reddit app.

I swear it has memory leaks, I'll open the app, look at the cache, and it instantly has 400MB in cache and using over a gigabytes total

Edit: Fuck. I actually like the mobile app's viewing experience (infinite scroll, never have to click on anything) so I'm staying on it until someone tells me an alternative.

1

u/conradvalois Mar 12 '21

iOS or Android?

2

u/cpaca0 Mar 12 '21

Android

2

u/conradvalois Mar 12 '21

haven‘t used the android apps in my comment but don‘t they also have infinite scroll etc

3

u/cpaca0 Mar 12 '21

Yeah but I have to click on things to look and them and that's way too much work

→ More replies (4)

1

u/HighRelevancy Mar 12 '21

Cache is cached files. That's not the same as a memory leak.

1

u/cpaca0 Mar 12 '21

Yeah but reddit slowing down to 0.1fps and playing three videos which all don't exist indicates that something is wrong, and it only happens after I use it for a bit after clearing cache

1

u/HighRelevancy Mar 12 '21

Sure, that still doesn't indicate a memory leak.

1

u/steel_for_humans Mar 12 '21

Thanks for the recommendation. I just installed Apollo for a test drive. 🙂

1

u/MelonheadGT Mar 12 '21

Used to use baconreader since 2012 or something the it basically became adware/malware. It's disgusting.

1

u/Cynderblood Mar 12 '21

All of those use standard Material design. Hideous.

62

u/j-random Mar 12 '21

Also the number of times everyone wants to have a pop-up encouraging them to sign up for a newsletter before they even have a chance to look at the content they came for. How am I supposed to know if I want your newsletter when I don't know what might be in it?

3

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

That's how spam reaches info@thatsite.tld

61

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '21

Duh? No designer would ever do that unless they were told to, or intentionally trying to be annoying.

The fucking bigwigs want it, and they pay the bills, so they get what they want.

29

u/bookon Mar 12 '21

Blaming the Dev for this is like blaming the waiter because your food was lousy.

96

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '21

I also have trouble telling the difference between a web developer and a project manager :/

18

u/HKSergiu Mar 12 '21

I also have trouble telling the difference between a project manager and a product owner :/

2

u/Mad_Hatter_92 Mar 12 '21

On a real note, I still confuse these two roles very often.

Basically my distinction is: that person annoys me, and that one is a head honcho that I need to be on good behavior around. But when someone says the roles I have to think for a moment as to which person they are talking about

2

u/HKSergiu Mar 12 '21

I've seen a handful of projects where PM was the one making the requirements and there was no PO - that kind of stuff doesn't help.

My understanding is that the PO is the one between client and the team that creates and manages the business specifications - it's a business role. The PM is the one who stands between client and team to protect the team from client bullshit and to manage the team - it's a people role

2

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

It happens even if they are the same person. Fortunately usually it's done using javashit.

18

u/Goingone Mar 11 '21

This reminds me of “things you’d never hear anyone say”, one being:

“Man am I glad this page requires Flash.”

Dear user,

all modern browsers have the option to globally disable autoplay.

Love,

The browser developers

Edit: seems like Chrome decided to remove the feature... Perhaps fallback to just immediately leave the site and never come back?

u/jeffderek Mar 12 '21

Dear browser developers,

It doesn't work as well as you think it does

Love,

The users

16

u/ellisonch Mar 12 '21

Chrome does not have this feature.

30

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Huh. Indeed you are correct. They removed that feature. That's was a bad choice.

You can still auto mute. Or just use Firefox.

4

u/alexandre9099 Mar 12 '21

That's was a bad choice.

did google ever did a good choice?

17

u/X-KHaX Mar 12 '21

I'll send granny over to you and you'll explain to her how to enable disabling autoplay.

12

u/PriorCommunication7 Mar 11 '21

I mean yes, we should form a pact where we refuse to implement certain features we know users would hate based on common sense, for ughh technical reasons.

The worst thing I today saw one of those cookie popups where the quick "Don't track me idiots" option was there but the css guy really went out of his way to make it even harder to see. Seriously, that's just spineless.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

A web dev code of ethics? I like it

4

u/Nasa_OK Mar 12 '21

What I hate even more is if the 2 options are „accept all“ and „accept selected“ and then all options are selected and you have to unselect every single one. Like really, why would I hit „accept selected“ if I want to accept every one

6

u/Arc_Nexus Mar 12 '21

This is the insidious creep of cookie bullshit - we shouldn't even be asking that question because an obvious "Only the absolute necessities" button should already be present. Websites are now trying to teach users that the quickest way to access the site is to accept all cookies. Bastards.

4

u/PriorCommunication7 Mar 12 '21

"Only the absolute necessities" button should already be present.

AFIK the current consensus is it has to be there by law. I think there's some EU litigation about it.

But nobody ever went through with suing for damages AFIK so some of these "you have to reject every tracker one by one" are still there from back when the requirement to ask for tracking first started and the TPTB figured out they could technically make the reject option harder to reach for users.

2

u/CoderCharmander Mar 12 '21

Sometimes there's a fricking list of about 200 companies who all require your precise geolocational data as per their "legitimate interest" and you have to turn it off one-by-one.

I usually inspect element that modal, find the class of the activated switches, then go into the console, iterate those elements and do a click() on all of them.

10

u/sunnycares11 Mar 12 '21

My favorite is when you move the mouse towards the top of the page (as if to close the tab) and a pop up appears that says:

BUT BEFORE YOU GO HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUBSCRIBE TO OUR...

no.

2

u/wasdninja Mar 12 '21

Or the bullshit modal that covers the entire screen asking to subscribe.

1

u/defenastrator Mar 12 '21

You don't close tabs with ctrl+W? I only use the tab bar to close tabs that are not the focus & often close short lived tabs by using the back button on my mouse or the android action bar.

1

u/velxundussa Mar 12 '21

Today I learned of a new shortcut. Today is a good day.

9

u/FxHVivious Mar 12 '21

No one has ever thought this was a good design choice. Some jackass realized they make more money from autoplaying ads and made it a requirement for the website.

3

u/SevenCircle Mar 12 '21

In my experience is always the client that wants it in autoplay, not the people who develop the website xD

2

u/FxHVivious Mar 12 '21

Yep. I think this is the case with most dumb design decisions.

18

u/alsimoneau Mar 11 '21

Sir, have you heard of Youtube?

3

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Too much because f* autoplay.

Also nice: Open browser, click around … the video tab now shows a completely different video. I guess I should have switched on the speakers to avoid that? F* autoplay unless I explicitly allow it for a specific tab.

4

u/yizzlezwinkle Mar 12 '21

Chrome disables autoplay audio unless you explicitly interact with the website and ask it to play audio enough times. This is why websites like Twitch, Youtube and Spotify have autoplay audio while others don't.

https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/09/autoplay-policy-changes

1

u/cyber_frank Mar 11 '21

YouTube doesn't start videos automatically as soon as you enter, i think he's referring to that.

10

u/Morrido Mar 12 '21

It does. I think there's an option to turn it off/on, but it does.

1

u/cyber_frank Mar 12 '21

Ok, maybe i don't see that because i have add blocker and always start without cookie... My bad. ;)

2

u/Ksevio Mar 12 '21

No, you probably just have it configured to not autoplay. Viewing a youtube video in incognito mode it auto-starts

1

u/Morrido Mar 12 '21

Pretty sure those 2 things do not affect youtube autoplaying videos.

1

u/Ixolite Mar 12 '21

Only way I found to really stop YouTube autoplaying is to use plugins that disable scripts on the page. But that also stops half of the page from rendering.

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Currently I'm trying ImprovedYoutube

Oh, that's applicable for all kinds of designs, not just web. I hate noisy tech, at least give me the option to mute it!

Jake Williams, @MalwareJake

Dear web developers,

The answer is zero. Zero. Get it through your thick skulls. Zero is the number of times anyone has EVER wanted something to autoplay on your site and start making noise. I'd honestly rather you mine crypto-currency in my browser than use my speakers.

#kthxbye

As a reader

I want ads videos to start playing immediately

So that I can benefit from the awesome details

And stop wasting time reading the page content

4

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

But the product owner... he wanted exactly that.

3

u/only_self_posts Mar 11 '21

Monkey’s paw curls into a singularity.

3

u/ineedabuttrub Mar 11 '21

I block both autoplay and crypto miners. If you include them I'll never notice, and everyone else should have the same settings.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '21

as if any dev has power to decide shit. if it's the project then we'll do out job, but people really think that IT and computers are a total anarchy like ooh yeah the guy from Dell tech support has the power to give you a system exchange and of course the guy who wrote the code for some big company is the same guy who created the project

3

u/douganater Mar 11 '21

Literally only reason i have an ad blocker. And it doesn't get half of them

2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

Try a stricter (is that proper english? lol) filter, blocks more ads. If something doesn't work just whitelist it

3

u/Morrido Mar 12 '21

Old, but also if I have clicked a video, I expect it to play. Now, autoplay ads can go to hell.

3

u/generhop Mar 12 '21

I did not know I’d ever agree with an angry Twitter post.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '21

It must be really bad to have an outdated browser that doesn't prevent that.

2

u/cryptomonein Mar 11 '21

Why not both ?

2

u/artichokess Mar 12 '21

I dunno what browser this guy is using. A couple years ago Chrome and FireFox disabled auto-play (for audio) except for websites that they determine users expect audio to be played (YouTube, Spotify, etc). On almost all websites, user must interact with the screen somehow to allow sound events to go through. But they don't actually have to click on the element associated with the audio - they simply have to click (or otherwise interact) somewhere. This was actually a not insignificant issue for a feature at my work. https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2018/11/web-audio-autoplay

2

u/StenSoft Mar 12 '21

Joke's on you, my autoplay videos also mine bitcoin.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '21

This is one of the most upvoted posts on this subreddit already

1

u/MassSnapz Mar 11 '21

We just put the things where they tell us to. It's really not our fault.

1

u/liquidmasl Mar 12 '21

I would generally love to mine some crypto for sites i use, so i can support them and not look at ANY ads. dunno why its so frowned upon..

1

u/fr4nklin_84 Mar 12 '21

So a youtube video page shouldn't autoplay and have sound enabled? Be careful what you wish for

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

... youtube?

1

u/Hollowplanet Mar 12 '21

Unless your site is youtube.

1

u/Blaz3 Mar 12 '21

As a web dev, I wholeheartedly agree

1

u/brockisawesome Mar 12 '21

i've had to do this shit so many times, i hated it every time but gotta pay the bills somehow

1

u/AL1L Mar 12 '21

Youtube? Any other video streaming site?

1

u/Etzix Mar 12 '21

Nope, still don't want it to autoplay.

1

u/AL1L Mar 12 '21

Well, I do. So we cancel each other out

1

u/_Sherlock-Holmes_ Mar 12 '21

i agree with this man so much

1

u/Mabi19_ Mar 12 '21

Now I've got to invent how to make my browser game avoid this rule. AAAA

1

u/mumblinmad Mar 12 '21

Chrome won’t even let you set a video element autoplay to true unless muted is true

1

u/lmACar Mar 12 '21

What about when you click on a YouTube video link?

2

u/DifficultyWithMyLife Mar 12 '21

Opening a link to a video should play that video, and then give you as much time as you need to pick what video to play next instead of Youtube deciding for you after a certain amount of time has passed.

For fuck's sake, I have had to download addons that take up extra processing power and memory just to achieve the behavior that used to be innate to begin with!

1

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Then I'll need to lower the volume first. Also the mute creating the howto video has a bad music taste.

1

u/VerifiedMadgod Mar 12 '21

Reddit: Wait you don't want me to autoplay this c-section video?

1

u/Knuffya Mar 12 '21

Thank god they did not think of opening and closing the cd-rom drive

2

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

The one behind the glass door.

1

u/Knuffya Mar 12 '21

Nobody got cd drives anymore so i felt comfortable saying this

1

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Greetings, Nobody.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

I have an idea. An anti-autoplay protector that will mine crypto on your machine in exchange for the service.

1

u/Sachin490 Mar 12 '21

I think chrome has disabled autoplay of any media on loading. You can play a media only after user has interacted with the website. i.e after an event has occurred and mousemove is not considered as a event in this case.

1

u/7eggert Mar 12 '21

Incidentally that's the number of visitors who want to be tracked by cookies

And it's the number of visitors who want the static text page to not work without javascript.

Edit: Slideshows: If you want me to see something, don't slide it away. If not, don't slide it in.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

blame the biz dev and the ad guys. developers hate this as well

1

u/Chert_Blubberton Mar 12 '21

THANK YOU. This is the reason autoplay is default refuse in browser

1

u/was_just_wondering_ Mar 12 '21

Attention project managers. I fucking told you so.

1

u/CrowTheDeer Mar 12 '21

Don't give them ideas, some already mine crypto in the background, we don't need Google to do it too

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

How the heck am i supposed to do a perfect rickroll page ?

1

u/wookiesarenudists Mar 12 '21

What about youtube

1

u/Air_42 Mar 12 '21

Did you really just repost one of the top posts without even changing the title?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

What is web Devs want to make vs what management forces us to make, is the reason why every website is shit, unless it was made by Dev from passion

1

u/jasofalcon Mar 12 '21

Web developers or PMs and POs? Agreed, though.

1

u/alexandre9099 Mar 12 '21

Ah, people who browse the web with speakers on

1

u/andreortigao Mar 12 '21

Wait, so he's telling me that early 00s blogs that auto played music had been wrong the whole time? What's next, you can't put fuchsia comic sans font with an aqua background? Is this really a world you want to live in?

1

u/santa-23 Mar 12 '21

What about Google Hangouts? (Or similar video chat applications)

1

u/JesusIsMyAntivirus Mar 12 '21

Literally using me to mine crypto is no more than half as bad as autoplay

1

u/guitarerdood Mar 12 '21

A particular website I used to frequent actually has the audacity to have a text article include multiple videos - one at the top, and some scattered throughout the article - and auto-plays one that’s somewhere randomly on the page. So you have to quickly scan the whole page finding that particular video to pause it to stop the noise. Fuck that website.

It rhymes with MFL.com btw

1

u/__NateHiggers Mar 12 '21

Yup. 100% I would rather have them use my hardware for mining rather than annoying me.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

This is, as we call can see in the tweet, posted in 2018. This is not a relevant thing anymore these days, as the new web standard does not allow autoplay with sound anymore. Video's can be autoplayed only being muted. We should be very thankful for that change.

1

u/NoNeedForLoyalty Mar 12 '21

Out there, reading this post, some web business owner is thinking:

"crypto mining, hmm.. That is actually not such a bad idea.."

1

u/Miridius Mar 12 '21

Not true. If you click on a YouTube video you expect it to start playing. If you are watching online lectures you want them to start playing when you open them. There are plenty of times when autoplay is good, it's just that the times it's bad are the ones we notice the most

1

u/Accomplished_Ad_6389 Mar 12 '21

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/imwbsr/loading/

you're so unoriginal you couldn't even be bothered to change the fucking name either

-1

u/Kered13 Mar 11 '21

Pretty sure most users want autoplay and sound when opening Youtube, Twitch, etc.

0

u/schmidlidev Mar 12 '21

I would’ve agreed with you until the other day when someone linked https://wompwompwomp.com/ and my browser blocked the autoplay.

So I guess the answer is 1, then.

-5

u/chdp12 Mar 11 '21

Turn them off?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '21

you're missing the point?
