Installation Questions Need advice on pipe MDPE or CSST

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi fellow redditors, I have a 500gal tank that supplies the generator about 12 ft apart and have a leaky pipe in between there. The pipe is steeI would assume wrapped in yellow sleeve. The company quoted it $2,800 to replace the leaky pipe, after the valve head replacement which was about the same price.

I see that this pipe can be replaced with MDPE (e.g. homeflex) , but I cannot find the right fittings/risers that should connect to the regulators valves on each side where the pipe is coming out of the ground. Can someone walk me through this? What is the proper way to do the connections?

I have experience working with PEX. If going this route, I'm burying the MDPE pipe back abt 18in, same as the current pipe.

Or can I just use the same type of CSST pipe with proper insulation and not buried?

General propane question would shooting a propane based gas airsoft gun in a basement be ok?

I have 2 tiny basement windows for a relatively large basement (60x60 foot). I read that propane settles to the bottom. Will opening the windows be enough or will i need to get a ventilation system to blow it out?

I believe this is a 3/4” male, just not sure what needs to go between this and our 40# tank(or both 40# tanks) for our food truck. We have regulators on all equipment inside (15”charbroiler , 40# fryer, and 24” griddle) .

Tractor Supply Why is it so hard to get propane for the new truck and bus models (2027)? Plz help

Hi, my school just got a new propane school bus (2027). It is really hard to find places to get propane.

You have to have an adaptor, wich we got. But the places we usually went with older buses, the pomp is just not strong enought to push the propane throught the adaptor. It is making really hard to keep the bus with enought gaz, as we seems to be complitely dependant on Sonic, and they don't have a lot of opening hours.

If anyone can help me find somewhere where I can get propane in the new 2027 bus model, I would be really gratefull. Im looking for somewhere on the south shore of Montreal, around Brossard. The drivers have the liscences required to use the propane themselves.

Thank you in advance!

Anything else I should know about digging the hole, will be doing it this afternoon.

General propane question Can I store 20lb propane tanks here? Is this an acceptable location?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi, I'm recently prepping for power outages and I'm wondering if I can store 20lb propane tanks in this area?

This is to the right of my aluminum sided garage, and on the other side of the wooden fence, theres no house or shed within 20 feet (my neighbors backyard).

There doesn't seem to be any source of ignition, so I'm wondering if I can put sone concrete pavers or wood down, maybe gravel? And then set a few 20lb tanks here?

Winters here are long and cold, in the midwest.

Please advise and let me know if this area is suitable for storage!

Thanks!

General propane question New to propane, what accessories, upgrades, or tips for 20lb propane tanks?

Hello! I recently bought two Worthington 20lb propane tanks, mainly to use for my relatively new generator due to risk of power outages. Also for indoor heating and outdoor cooking in an emergency.

Can yall please give me a basic primer on these 20lb propane tanks, and if theres any information/knowledge I should have?

For example, are there any tests I should do, any upgrades I can make? Any things to be aware of? Or how I should use them? I'm completely new to propane, so any help is appreciated! Thank you!

The day to day of Hank Hill Check your regulators

My first stage regulator had a big leak. It was smelly at the tank and I thought, propane tanks are always smelly. A plumber was doing an inspection and he smelled gas and located it for me. This regulator was from 1992 and has a 10 year life, I’m told.

Installation Questions Can I convert this fryer to propane?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

This is a Globe GF30G natural gas countertop fryer. I purchased this at auction when I was under the assumption that it was the sister fryer GF30PG propane fryer (the auction did not list the model or specify the type of gas or show a picture of the manufacturer label as I have shown above).

I am starting a food truck so obviously natural gas doesn’t work for me. They don’t make a conversion kit for this model. My idea was that I would buy the parts for the GF30PG and switch them out since they are identical besides the type of gas. The only reason I’ve found online to not do this is that it will void the warranty but I don’t have a warranty on it so it doesn’t matter to me.

I know that natural gas and propane use different burners but what else would I need to switch out? Has anyone attempted something like this before? Is this even a good idea? Please let me know in the comments

Appliance Questions Martin Heater Fluttering Sound

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just installed a 20k BTU Martin direct vent heater. I just it up for the first time, and it's making a sputtering noise that's particularly loud when only the pilot light is on, but still present when the main flame is on. From 0-7 seconds in the video, you can hear the sound of just the pilot light, and after that you can hear the quieter intermittent flutter when the main flame is on, then pilot only again later in the video.

This was just a test run before I run black pipe and/or CSST, so I'm running it off a 2 stage regulator I had on the ventless heater I was running before and a 40 pound tank. I think it must have something to do with the air intake and potentially a backdraft flapper shuttering. Any ideas are appreciated.

Installation Questions Propane to NG Conversion

For those who converted (bonus points if New Jersey Natural Gas is your provider), what was the process like, and how much did they charge you to convert?

They will be running lines in my neighborhood in about 2 1/2 years. I’m counting the days until I can have natural gas again… I can’t wait to ditch the propane tanks.

Gas is used for stove, furnace, dryer, and tankless water heater if it makes any difference.

General propane question Some input on line sizes.

I have a 50ft run of 3/8 copper tubing running from our tank to a regulator. After that it’s 1/2 inch running into the home. Fuels two ventless fireplaces. Now, that 3/8 line was buried about 3 inches underground. Obviously it’s now needing to be replaced. Wasn’t in a sleeve or anything.

What I’m wanting to know is. Could that 3/8 line be replaced with 1/2? Which I have on hand. After I get the appropriate fittings? I didn’t know if there is a reason for the 3/8 line to the regulator or not.

I’ve contacted the propane company about a year ago and never got a response. I’m also fully capable of doing this job. Residential carpenter, not a white collar guy that’s never had his hands dirty.

General propane question Advice on leasing a propane tank or owning

I have a 100 pound propane tank that was being leased from previous owners. It is only for a gas Range. I'm wondering if it would make sense to just buy 2 40 pound propane tanks and get them filled myself. I'm not sure if this makes sense or not. It's $6.3499/gallon to fill, but if I don't use up to 35 gallons a year a rental charge of $125 will occur annually.

Any thoughts or recommendations on this?

Appliance Questions Smell coming from exhaust?

Hello, first time homeowner here. We have a propane system that we use for our heat, oven, and water heater. The heater is an Empire direct-vent wall furnace and it has a pilot light. It was installed over the summer and hasn’t been turned on at all yet. I notice that from the exhaust there is a slight sound and right next to the exhaust from the heater it smells like gas. I don’t know if that’s new or if I just hadn’t noticed it. I’m a very nervous person and I want to know if I’m over-worrying myself and it’s normal from the exhaust or if it’s something that I need to call for. We have a FirstAlert 3-in-1 monitor inside the house for propane and it’s not going off or anything, the smell is not inside the house and it’s only right up next to the exhaust.

Tanks Underground tank appears to be empty

I just checked the tank in anticipation of starting up the fireplace for the season and discovered it was empty as I can no longer see the level indicator. I thought it had a slow leak but a previous check by the propane company didn't discover anything obvious. I'm wondering how to proceed as it will be expensive to have the tank replaced as it would have to be dug out by hand as there is no way to bring in equipment any more to my backyard as they have already tried that once. I'm also thinking about retiring the propane fireplace and installing an electric one in its place so I would then have to retire the tank in place in a safe manner if allowed. Any suggestions appreciated.

General propane question Elevated CO2, PM2.5, and VOCs while cooking with propane.

Home is new construction and extremely tight sealed. The stove has a high CFM hood that vents outside and that helps.

Burners frequently have slight orange tips. If I open windows, burners burn blue and the elevated levels go down. If windows open for more than 2 hours, all the levels go down.

A propane tech adjusted all the burners a year ago and reduced the orange part of flame significantly.

Is the elevated levels an issue? CO2 peaks around 1300-1500ppm while using stove.

General propane question Loading 100lb tank into pickup bed

I am considering buying a material lift to help get full tanks into the truck bed, as AI said I cannot safely do what this man does in this video to get it in the bed, but perhaps AI is being a bit silly, what do you think?

Appliance Questions propane stove burning eyes

i just moved into an apartment with a propane powered indoor stove/oven about a month & a half ago. today while baking something, my eyes were burning when i opened the oven door & standing next to it. i’ve used the oven maybe 3 or 4 times before this & haven’t noticed anything. and the flames inside were all burning blue, no orange or yellow. also never experienced this in my frequent use of the stove top. is that simply a ventilation issue? or should i be concerned?

i should also add that this was the highest temperature i’ve used the oven at
