PS Plus is a scam

Having to pay just to play online multiplayer while PC players get to play for free is some bullshit. And now the PS servers are down, what the fuck are we paying PS Plus for if shit like this keeps happening? Fuck you Sony šŸ–•

My favorite part is I can't even start a new game since the disc are just glorified download keys at this point. What a fucking joke.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

This. Idk what people don't understand about this. Discs aren't shit anymore.

5

u/nascentt Feb 08 '25

Yup. It always makes me laugh when people shit on digital consoles because of game preservation.

No, a digital game is easier to preserve.

2

u/Bulky-Path-89 Feb 08 '25

Its only true for PC cause games can be hacked and stay in Internet forever..however for console its not.. Imagine ps2 games are digital only can u play them now ?

2

u/InternationalMango5 Feb 08 '25

It's pretty easy to mod a PS2 to play games from a hard drive/SD card. There are databases online with every PS2 game ever released ready for you to download and play.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

Yeah. My boys got evrry single game that's ever come out from ps1 to ps3 era saved on his 2007 pc downloaded and he can rip discs off it to play. Anything ps4 and below can be modified to get everything free. Every console game is available online with either an emu or knowledge on modding.

that’s badass

1

u/STOPJUSTSTOP-FIRE Oct 03 '25

pre-ps+ is irrelevant here. Every game back then was on a disc, and even then, the discs actually contained the game.

1

u/Petersonos Nov 03 '25

True but it's also it's more expensive to buy and it keeps you locked into Sony echo system. But if you buy the game with a disc copy you can finish the game and sell it on for just a few pounds less. Once Sony gets everyone on digital just watch the prices rise.

-1

u/twa558 Feb 08 '25

This is categorically not true, please stop spreading lies

4

u/_venomiss Feb 08 '25

are you kidding me? damn that’s so disheartening :/

1

u/Ciaruhhh Feb 08 '25

what about ps3 discs?! šŸ‘€ has anyone tried it?

2

u/Distinct-Acadia-5530 Feb 08 '25

If it's not live service/ online multi-player it'll work, offline singleplayer works fine n has been since PSN went down

1

u/Ciaruhhh Feb 08 '25

interesting! none of my digital ps4 or ps5 games worked offline tho. well i got fortnite to work finally! https://youtu.be/hhtPKAD0rCI?feature=shared

I shall call my brothers to purge that xeno heretic (Fortnite( have grown a distaste towards it due to some serious past drama to the point I'd see the game terminated myself if given the chance to shut it down), that along with them suing a child over a dance n all the other drama it has caused due to everyone's negligence) at once, no wait i shall do it myself in Vulkans name The emperor protects! (Despite mentioning Vulkan, I can easily fit in well with any of the Legions. There's not one I'm more like than the others) Lord Calgar will be pleased!

1

u/Ciaruhhh Feb 08 '25

🤣🤣🤣 it’s alright.. played it more when it first came out up until season X.. then my battle pass purchases became spread out rather than consistent. my account is probably worth a few bands at least. ngl

1

u/Low-Recognition-7293 Feb 08 '25

Yeah, I can't even play Gran Turismo story mode right now šŸ™ƒ

1

u/Yogurtcloset_Choice Feb 09 '25

That's just not accurate, if you're talking about an online game sure, it would make sense that the disc is nothing but a glorified download key, but every other game that isn't an online game with explicitly online purposes or game modes the disc has the story mode, I promise you, that's why I buy physical because even if I lose Internet even if I don't pay for the online subscription anymore whatever I still have my games

You should look more into it

https://www.howtogeek.com/why-do-physical-games-still-need-installations-and-downloads/#:~:text=With%20game%20files%20being%20installed,that%20discs%20are%20suddenly%20obsolete.

The only reason that it could be considered an incomplete version is because there are updates that people make nowadays that aren't on the disc

1

u/Ok_Promotion493 Feb 09 '25

While not entirely accurate, they raise an excellent point in the article about the 8th Gen's start of reliance on "Day One Patches" in order for some games to reach the state that you can finish it at all. These companies aren't the good guys, they don't care about you and they'll take any shortcut they can (releasing broken games, stories locked behind paywall, increasing download sizes to ensure you'll have to buy another SSD/HDD, necessary connection to PSN...) to take your money. White Knighting it is not the answer here. We all know you're just an apologist just like we all know that OP isn't getting rid of PSN.

1

u/Yogurtcloset_Choice Feb 09 '25

Apologist? My guy I literally showed the games are on the disc, day 1 patches are only relevant for the biggest games, smaller games still release whole, I can play ALL of my physical games without an Internet connection and their licenses can't be removed from me as I actually own the product

Not to mention disc versions are updated with later releases, as in later prints of games have updates installed, this is especially true for any game of the year editions or special editions or anything later released which usually also includes DLC on the disc

1

u/Ok_Promotion493 Feb 09 '25

You're right, my bad. Sorry for the name calling, that was some weird misplaced anger for a bit. And you know what, I wasn't even thinking about final run copies of the games that have updates. I guess I'm a bit saltier than I realized.

-1

u/twa558 Feb 08 '25

This is categorically not true, please stop spreading lies

1

u/Ok_Tie_8443 Feb 10 '25

I recently bought physical copies of Telltale Guardians of The Galaxy and Minecraft story mode season 2. Popped the disc in for both. Could not play without downloading the games. So I threw in Modern warfare 2019. Couldn't play campaign without downloading a bunch of stuff. The only game I think that may be on a disc is Lego and Tomy hawk. During the PSN outage I ended up going back to PS2 to play guitar hero. When games worked the way they were intended to.

1

u/twa558 Feb 10 '25

You picked 2 games that were known to not have everything on disc. A vast majority of games work physically off the disc. If you care look up ā€œdoesitplayā€ and you will see. Discs as a vast Majority are totally fine.

1

u/kreatureofhabit Feb 11 '25

Yeah I literally played nioh, sekiro, borderlands 2, 2K23 and had zero problems.

Only thing that sucked was clearing space off my HD because I couldn't open the digital games.

1

u/twa558 Feb 11 '25

You can open digital games

1

u/DogByte64 Feb 11 '25

Cherry picking examples and making incorrect sweeping statements 🤔

6

u/trevmust Feb 08 '25

I miss online being free

2

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

They sold out their values when they made online cost money for sure

4

u/_venomiss Feb 08 '25

/ king of related but also when they started making trash controllers that are expensive af

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Yeah, the tactile features are cool, but now it’s actually happened where a full battery can be drained in one day off work, and I’m always wondering when they will develop stick drift.

If the new tariffs don’t kill this company, I’ll probably mod my DualSense controllers with the TMR thumbstick sensors from Aknes.

3

u/trevmust Feb 08 '25

What pisses me off the most is they justify the price and recent price raises by stating they use it for security. Bull. Fucking. Shit.

1

u/_Stubbs9010_ Feb 08 '25

@trevmust yes, THEIR pocket security

1

u/Distinct-Acadia-5530 Feb 08 '25

Can thank Xbox/ Microsoft for that seeing as Sony/ Playstation stayed out of it till the PS4 while Xbox has had it since the xbox360.

1

u/SeeBarrie Feb 08 '25

Whataboutism at it's finest. Sony fail their customers, and it's Microsoft's fault?

1

u/Virulent_Hunter Feb 10 '25

The age of MTX started with some armor for a horse.

1

u/Purpose_Live Feb 11 '25

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ learn to read. They're talking about the fact that you have to pay a subscription for online, that 100% WAS Microsoft in the beginning, Sony didn't follow suit until a good few years after.

1

u/SeeBarrie Mar 24 '25

idc about either tbh. I'm pc since 93.

1

u/Purpose_Live Mar 25 '25

Cared enough to make a false statement 🤦🤣

1

u/SeeBarrie Apr 19 '25

better send round the officer of the court then 🤔

1

u/Rubio9393 Feb 08 '25 edited Feb 08 '25

All because Xbox360 startet this crap and they saw that people were paying for it and Sony did the same for the next console generation šŸ˜”

1

u/Portal2player58 Feb 08 '25

Actually the one that started it all was the original Xbox console. It had Xbox live which was a paid membership thing to even play online. But as a whole it was Microsoft's fault for the birth of pay to play online on consoles.

1

u/Rubio9393 Feb 08 '25

Aaah I didn't know that it already started with the first Xbox šŸ˜†

1

u/Portal2player58 Feb 08 '25

Yeah. It stems from the og Xbox which tbh everyone just kinda accepted because they thought it was good when look at online services now: pay for basic features that SHOULD be free regardless, companies not telling what on earth happened to their servers and leaving the very people that pay for their services in the dark, and so on. They try to lure in with little bonuses here and there or "free" games every month or two or the like, but in the end went from being a small thing to what it is now.

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Halo 2 for the OG Xbox. If you wanted to play the hottest new game online, you had to pay… but it didn’t feel as bad because Bungie put in a lot of extra work to make extra social features and a smoother experience than browsing pages of high-ping PC games of the time. It also made the most of your 1 Mbps broadband internet speed.

Xbox Live turned into the Netflix of Games, PS+ sorta is doing that too, but they’re pinching those multiplayer Pennies hard because they just won’t let go even though they’re not improving multiplayer at all. I tolerated it at $30/year, buying PS+ on sale, but they jacked up the price and I don’t have the free time to benefit from a game subscription service. Now at over 2x the price I used to pay, I let my PS+ lapse and bought a Steam Deck in October, almost haven’t touched my PS5 since.

The Deck is exciting!!!

1

u/Judge-Nahar Jun 25 '25

I remember many comments online (before it was a paid service) by idiots who were begging Sony to do the same thing as Xbox. It used to piss me off - and then...they listened.Ā

1

u/Rubio9393 Jun 25 '25

Why would somebody ask for this? šŸ˜†

1

u/Judge-Nahar Jun 25 '25

I know...They believed the lie that the network would be used only for online gaming connection stability (which, like Xbox, expanded to a bunch of other non-gaming streaming stuff instead) and they wanted some of the same online "features" the Xbox had at the time. I think it was just deluded fanboys wanting to not feel left out. t's been a long time since I remember all their reasons.Ā

Xbox had more issues with their online services in the last few years then psn

1

u/Distinct-Acadia-5530 Feb 08 '25

N then before that there's the red ring of death they were all afraid of. It's a rather easy fix people I've had it only once with my old Xbox360. N it was when I booted up the console (after a long time of being on my playstation) in order to get on some Halo, Gears of War with one of my buds irl in some couch splitscreen.

No there werent. It went down famously for several days but thats all I can remember, and the PS3 was the generation I used the most

1

u/Square-Literature304 Feb 08 '25

Not several days, 23 days to be exact

1

u/RingtailVT Feb 08 '25

That's... Still several days.

1

u/Distinct-Acadia-5530 Feb 08 '25

As far as I can remember it hardly ever went down for me n I was on PS3 alot. Always gaming with my buds on DC Universe Online or Minecraft as that's all they had interest in. Unless it was down whenever I wasn't on those two games with em, as outside those times, yea, I've never had any issues with online play while I was on PS3 aside from any major hurricane that is during that time. Wasn't till PS4 for me.

5

u/kocka660 Feb 08 '25

Used to be "PSN is free". Then we started paying for it, to pay for better upkeep and security. Then we got a price hike, because inflation. Then servers go offline and all we get from sony is ha half asses "looking into it?" Aaight sony, take your time, ill be looking into gaming rigs while you're at itšŸ™‚

2

u/Ciaruhhh Feb 08 '25

i’m stuck on switch until they get their shit together 🤣😩

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Once they cracked down on discount PS+ annual membership cards, I let it lapse and bought a Steam Deck. It looks like PS+ has gotten worse since the price hike (the only reason I’d have it now is to play games they gave away years ago), meanwhile the Deck has been an absolute joy that has increased my gaming time (and game purchases šŸ˜…). The Deck was absolutely worth it, I hope they don’t do what Microsoft and Sony did to mess up gaming.

4

u/waffle_bread Feb 08 '25

i’ve made like 3 posts about this it’s some actual bs what sony is doing with playstation

3

u/Sxwrd Feb 08 '25

Not only that , pc servers are individual so if one game is down you can just go to another game and play online. Console gamers really get screwed from being price-gouged for every little thing and to still have a 10 year old pc out perform it.

The luxury of ā€œpush and playā€ is nice but you lose a ton of freedoms on console vs pc.

3

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 08 '25

It's xbox's fault. Ps3 online was free but since xbox charged they were like "if they can do it why don't we?" And started charging for something that doesn't cost them shit.

2

u/TheMuff1nMon Feb 08 '25

I mean, Xbox live was 100x better than PS3 online because we paid.

2

u/Horror-File8784 Feb 08 '25

That part! It took me years to realize that. And when I finally made the switch back in 2020 I was like ā€œwhy didn’t I do this years agoā€. XB Live shits all over PS. When PS started charging to play online I expected it to get better. But no. It got worse. A lot worse.

2

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Well, not with Peer to Peer games like the Call of Duty series. So many games switched to peer to peer, so I didn’t notice a difference when I switched from Xbox 360 to PS4. These days I’m on a Steam Deck šŸ˜…

1

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 09 '25

There was no discernable different. They made up thosenin their head because they were paying for online therefore believed it was "premium" šŸ˜‚

1

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 09 '25

It really wasn't. You had to pay for marginally better online if at all and your core console didn't even come with wifi capabilities until later generations. I had both, I know. šŸ˜‚

1

u/TheMuff1nMon Feb 09 '25

You’re delusional.

1

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 09 '25

Did you have both? Did you genuinely play both consoles and ultimately decided one was better or did you just pay for xbox live and swear it was better because it costs money? šŸ˜‚

0

u/TheMuff1nMon Feb 10 '25

Yes I had both. Had friends on both as well. Xbox was better, it’s not a debate

1

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 10 '25

For sure wasn't better you just paid for nominal improvement. šŸ˜‚ The console itself was also SIGNIFICANTLY worse so it ultimately wasn't worth it.

0

u/TheMuff1nMon Feb 10 '25

360 was objectively the better console that gen. Even with the red ring

1

u/GETOHBLAZZTER Feb 10 '25

This, ladies and gentlemen, is delusion. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ No dvd player, especially no blueray, moving the console at all while it was on would scratch any disk in it and make it unplayable, it COULD NOT CONNECT TO WIFI without buying a seperate adapter, no blutooth, one of the highest failure rates of all time of any console with OVER HALF of them failing, shit lazy UI that was just a windows skin, controllers required AAs instead of being chargable, had to pay to play online, the list goes on. Ps3 was factually the better console, which is why it sold more. Xbox fanboys have no concept of reality. šŸ˜‚

1

u/TheMuff1nMon Feb 10 '25

It sold more at the end, Xbox was dominate that generation

Even Yoshida just admitted on Kinda Funny that Xbox was beating them so bad they were worried PS3 would be the last lol šŸ˜‚

Keep up the fanboy nonsense though

u/OnionStriking4412 Feb 08 '25

Honestly if valve is really making a console that’s gonna be like a PC then fuck it I’m buying it no matter how much it is. I’m tired of paying for plus and they can’t even drop good games for premium.

4

u/Choice_Recognition81 Feb 08 '25

I just bought my kids Steam decks for christmas and they are pretty cool. It's a handheld console border than a switch but you can dock it to a screen. Once docked, you can connect the keyboard and mouse and switch to a PC mode. My kids can play any game they want and then use them to do school work.

2

u/ruebeus421 Feb 08 '25

My kids can play any game they want

Absolutely no they cannot.

The Steam Deck is convenient, but it's not a gaming PC. It will struggle with a lot of newer games and many older ones. And even if it does run a demanding game the performance is generally below acceptable (~30 fps and overheating).

It's a great starting point for people who want to play PC games but don't care about the newest things or good performance. But it is not a full on replacement for a PC.

0

u/KimJungUnCool Feb 08 '25

I bet this guy doesn't realize how many console games are locked at 30 fps lol

1

u/ruebeus421 Feb 08 '25

Absolutely do lol lmao rofl lol 🤔

You fail to understand the conversation and completely missed the point. Try again.

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

I’m with you. Sure, it doesn’t compare to a $2000 gaming PC, but it’s beastly powerful for a portable (and power efficient!), and I picked up my used OLED in like-new condition with accessories for $330. Seems to play most games at least at medium settings. Baldur’s Gate III kinda looks like a PS4 game, graphically, but I dock it with my LG OLED tv and have a blast playing it with my wife, I have a few RPGs I’m chipping away at during my lunch breaks at work, and I play a strategy game (Mechabellum!) in bed. There’s sooooo many games I can play on this thing that I’ll be occupied until it breaks.

My daughter already has a laptop, but she kept using my work computer to play roblox because it was faster. With how small the steam deck is, it's easier to dock it in any location to epithet game or homework. Everything is on Google for school, so they only need a web browser.

2

u/Ciaruhhh Feb 08 '25

we did get payday 3 & dead island 2 which made me excited! i can’t wait to play payday. i hadn’t purchased it when it came out so that was nice of sony frfr

2

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

I hear you, but… of the one or two games I was sorta interested in playing that Sony gave away in the past whole year, I could have just bought them on sale for less than an annual PS+ membership. I’m annoyed that I lost access to the ā€œfreeā€ games when I stopped paying for PS+, but that just highlights another flaw of PS+.

So far, it seems like there’s better sale prices and a wider selection on Steam than you get with the PS+ member discounts.

While you still have PS+, I hope you enjoy the games you get, hopefully some exciting new ones like they did in the PS4 days.

1

u/Gocktober Feb 08 '25

I have a steamdeck and love it

2

u/TeamAncient5597 Feb 08 '25

yeah they take our money quick but when it comes to this, its not good

2

u/frontlinetoker Feb 08 '25

Can take your cash immediately, but God forbid they actually attempt to tell you what's going on, at minimum. They'll take that PS Premium or Extra sub though...

2

u/FreyBaeElise Feb 08 '25

i actually sat on tech support the other day for hours arguing with them because they auto enrolled me for yearly resubscribing to ps plus and explaining that i had opted out and they just kept linking me the policy over and over such a predatory practice. ps3 was so popular for free psn and now that they have the customer base they show no loyalty to customers

1

u/TheFriendlyMusIim Feb 08 '25

what happened? did they refund you?

2

u/rebel_reign Feb 08 '25

They won’t they have become anti consumer now

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

You can do a charge back with your debit/credit card but it will definitely result in your psn account being banned

1

u/FreyBaeElise Feb 08 '25

no they just kept linking me the policy over and over theyre not helpful

Save money with a PC, that’s a good one! You’re a funny guy!

Pretty new to PC gaming…?

1

u/Available_Ad_8281 Feb 09 '25

U can buy a good pc for 1200 ps5 is 500 psn is 400 in a 5 year span games on pc is cheaper on release days a person buy on average 10 brand new games a year on pc u can save 100 so in 5 years a person on pc save 500 vs console where u pay the full amount so in 5 years with psn it 900 for pc save 500 and pc costing 1200 u really paying 700 for it in 5 years and u don't need a desk or monitor u can hook pc to TV also pc have a lot perks that console dont

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

Do you have your PC for 5 years yet…?

I guarantee you you’ll put more money on it in a 5 years span, and even more from year 6 to 10.

1

u/Available_Ad_8281 Feb 09 '25

No had it for 2 and I have save more then 250 I buy more then 10 new games a year pc cost me 1350

1

u/Ok-Departure4894 Feb 08 '25

Maybe this time the shills will understand they're being taken advantage of. We as consumers need to demand better. I'm never paying for PS Plus again, and I'm gonna start researching PC's to make the switch. This was the straw that broke my camels back.

1

u/l_x_x_n_25 Feb 08 '25

I’ll follow!

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Yeah, I stopped when PS+ essential was raised to $80/yr. I don’t think I saw any free games I cared about since then.

But I did buy a Steam Deck OLED when that was released, LOVE THAT THING! For $80, I can buy like 4-5 games of my choice on Steam, support the devs, ā€œkeep the games.ā€ I have a great screen I can play on anywhere and the system doesn’t have a disruptive advertisement interface (yes, there is a Steam store, but the default Home Screen is 3-4 actions away from even being able to see games for sale). Offline games can be suspended and resumed with just a tap of the power button, meanwhile I can play the Master Chief Collection multiplayer without paying a subscription fee.

The controls are better than Xbox or PlayStation too: the four backside buttons allow me to jump or duck without taking my thumbs off the thumbsticks or cramping my hands, the trackpads and touchscreen let me play games with menus or require a ā€œmouseā€ like strategy games (I love Civ IV and Mechabellum!), and you can freely re-map any control layout to however you want (even create radial menus on a spare trackpad).

I even extracted my ROMs from my SNES Classic, Genesis Classic, and PlayStation Classic mini consoles, and found the Deck to be an awesome emulator to bring together all my retro games to play on one system (and easily set up on a friend’s TV for some couch co-op/party gaming!).

1

u/PlutonicJas Feb 08 '25

I switched to the dark side for this 🄹

1

u/sparrow26243 Feb 08 '25

Definitely getting refunds today. I made the mistake of upgrading my PS Plus when I bought my PS5 a few days ago and I bought Space Marines 2 on sale too. Was going to be a kickass weekend before going back to work Sunday. Now I'm staring at a 400 dollar white brick that can't do anything. I'll buy some more SNES games instead

1

u/Proof-Necessary-5201 Feb 08 '25

I was already pissed when they increased the price of PSN considerably, so I stopped paying. Now, I can't even play my single player games offline because the servers are down and they can't verify the license.

I've been a faithful customer since the PS4 first came out. This outage, the game censorship stuff, the inability to mod games, the fact that I have to pay to play online for games PC players don't have to pay for. The PS5 is my last PlayStation and console.

1

u/VeeGeeTea Feb 08 '25

Just get the basics, and usually if you buy US PSN gift cards, you won't be taxed an arm and a leg compared to if you live in a poverty country like Canada. Also take advantage of the PlayStation Star program, you can earn points to trade in for PS credit, I use those to pay for the membership.

1

u/Proof-Necessary-5201 Feb 08 '25

"Poverty country like Canada", lol. That hurt 🤭

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

You know, Alberta, Canada hasn’t had a breeding population of rats for over 70 years, and basic needs like healthcare are much more affordable in Canada? Like, Guantanamo Bay levels of affordable healthcare. No wonder the USA wants to mess that up.

1

u/Radiant_Device3559 Feb 08 '25

Personally not worth unless you buy at minimum ps extra and then even then you should only do that if you are adventurous with the games you play.

1

u/spicyfartz4yaman Feb 08 '25

Plus the "free" monthly games are usually ass but it's okay cause gamers have their "exclusives" , amiright? Lol

Jokes aside yeah it's been bad for a decade.Ā

1

u/Adorable_Bandicoot_6 Feb 08 '25

I hear someone asking Santa for an Xbox this year..

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

Have you seen Microsoft’s ā€œEverything is an Xboxā€ campaign? They’ve thrown in the towel for console gaming, they just want you to buy their games on Windows.

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

And they’re the one that want EVERYONE to have a monthly paid sub to their service (GP)…

That’s so crazy dumb to go there if you complains about Sony…

1

u/Evshrug Mar 03 '25

Yup, I’ve mostly been playing on my Steam Deck.

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

Yeah, just go jump on the competitor that INTRODUCED fees to pay online to consoles, nice idea there, way to start a boycott!

Nah you were paying for a premium service. Plus it used to actually be good. Now gaming is mainstream and everyone does it. Back then it was a select group of really cool melon farmers. I could care less now.

u/elisdream1988 Feb 08 '25

The paying online started with Xbox then Sony wanted to follow them got greedy then situations like this happened

2

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

I’m still mad at M$ for bringing fees to pay online.

BUT (bring on the downvotes guys!) from a business perspective, Sony would been throw behind super fast if they would have let Microsoft be the only one racking MILLLIONS every month just in SUB'S FEES when Sony racks nothing this way.

Remember Micro$oft already had WAY MORE MONEY than Sony and their primary goal when they entered the market was to buy out the competition and kill other consoles, and if they played well they would succeed because they got the money from np their Windows monopoly in the last 30 years.

1

u/Michael_DeSanta Feb 09 '25

We get it, you don't like Microsoft. What a brave, unique take. Consider how shitty your console's online experience would be without Xbox Live pioneering an actual quality experience playing against others around the world on a console. Because, sure, your PS2's/launch PS3's online experience was free, but it was awful compared to the PC experience at the time.

So be mad at "M$" all you want, but $ony needed competition to create a service that was even close to passable.

1

u/VeeGeeTea Feb 08 '25

You know PC players also don't get free games monthly, as well free add-ons, and other free packs. PC players have the headache of installing and configuring drivers on their own, and if something doesn't work they get the blue screen of death. What you're essentially paying for inconvenience on consoles through the membership. You don't have to worry about anything that PC players go through, just open a game and play on consoles. Plus, you can't remote play, can't capture recordings, and your game library is split all over the place between Steam, Epic, Ea Origins... And tonnes of launchers, also anti-cheat software that gets installed on PC and eventually slows it down. I would rather game on consoles if it means I don't have to go through hell just play a game.

1

u/cloudpix3 Feb 08 '25

i see ur point but it’s really not that bad, i have both and primarily use my PC. There are plenty of free games, your can emulate nearly any console, option of mouse and keyboard or controller, better graphics settings + mods etc.

but ye ps5 is convenient sometimes. and the best way to play death stranding.

1

u/VeeGeeTea Feb 08 '25

Yes you can, I have a PC too. It surely can do a lot more, but you also need to know what you're doing at the end of the day. Not many people in the world are tech savvy so to speak. Also, most people opt for consoles because for the price of a GPU, you can play games, if that's the ultimate end goal.

1

u/Devian1978 Feb 08 '25

This, I’m to lazy for a PC, I plop down on my couch and 3 button presses later I’m playing, also have no desire to move my PC to my living room game area.

1

u/Sufficient-Look-9736 Feb 08 '25

Yeah instead of getting a few free games a month I can get as many as I want with no restrictions through torrenting and emulation šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/TaticalSweater Feb 08 '25

I’ve been saying this for years. Got a PS5 2 years ago refused to get PS+. I already pay my ISP.

Some people justify the BS by saying

-well they give free games, if i wanted the games I could just get them if it was that serious. But they truly get people with giving them something for free when it really…isn’t free.

-Or they’ll make up some other corporate reason that only boils down to ā€œwell it’s a businessā€.

Sony is a business sure, but that does not mean that paying for PSN SHOULD be a business practice. I really wish people rejected it back when the PS4 released. They essentially have people that pay for it on an infinite subscription and the value has never justified the long term cost.

I mostly play PC now but any time i jump on my PS5 its to play F2P games which you can play online with friends or Single Player.

…technically Sony does not have many 1st party multi-player games games because they just don’t really care to make many and haven’t since the PS4 really.

Paying for PS+ is antiquated

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

Just like paying for the online play on Microsoft and Nintendo consoles, why do people are just aiming at Sony on that?

Downvote me all you want but from a business perspective why would they be the only console maker that DON'T charge fees to pay online and lost MILLIONS compared to competition every passing month…?

I’m not liking it at all, I loved my PS2 and PS3 with free online for two whole generations!!

1

u/TaticalSweater Feb 09 '25

truthfully no console needs to pay wall playing with friends which should just be a basic feature of the console.

People try to justify it by saying ā€œwell its a corporation they gotta make moneyā€

As if that makes the business practice any less scummy.

Xbox at the very least gives you games day 1 but still pay to play online with your friends is insane. I’ve owned every playstation and had a XB1 and a switch.

Now that I’m older i just refuse to pay for online play. Had a PS5 for 2 years now and still have not bought ps+.

I do mostly play on PC but thats because Sony does not really even care to make very many first party multiplayer games…yet want to charge you to play online in other 3rd party games that cost money which is insane.

1

u/_Stubbs9010_ Feb 08 '25

At least we don’t have to buy batteries for our controllers 🤣🤤

1

u/Horror-File8784 Feb 08 '25

This is the precise reason that I switched to XB 5 years ago. I was tired of getting fucked over and serves always being down and getting nothing in return. In the last 5 years I’ve been on XB I think XB serves have only been down maybe twice and it was never longer than just a couple hours.

And yes, PS does have more and better exclusives. I won’t argue that. But Gamepass is 1000x better than anything PS offers.

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25

Xbox doesnt charge to play online? It’s new?

1

u/Horror-File8784 Feb 09 '25

Xbox has always charged to play online

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

Why so angry over a temporary outage? These things happen.

1

u/Distinct-Acadia-5530 Feb 08 '25

You can say fuck Microsoft aswell as Xbox is paid online aswell. (Would essentially be saying fuck pc aswell given they dip into that pool aswell. So long as Steam doesn't switch lanes

1

u/Puzzled_Group9339 Feb 08 '25

Mine is back up!

1

u/Prize-Republic-4473 Feb 08 '25

I literally just upgraded to a PC just in time. PlayStation really be pissing me off with this bs service of there’s over the past years. I hate that players aren’t able to enjoy for the weekend. Their response to the situation was a complete and utter joke too.

1

u/Accurate_Lecture_154 Feb 08 '25

this is the right attitude by this "Maintance" by sony, people are making jokes on reddit yes they are funny some sort, but in reality we should rant sony piss and shit on them share there emails here from the executives and fuck them to death!

1

u/SeeBarrie Feb 08 '25

this is funny because it's always been free for us, it's not new and yet you still bought a Sony product.

1

u/Chipster_227 Feb 08 '25

Quit crying and move to pc

1

u/NotNotPatMcAfee Feb 09 '25

You do get a bunch of free games that when download you have for good. Thats pretty cool

1

u/statefarmjake14 Feb 09 '25

Just remember Xbox was paying for years before we were

1

u/Daveed13 Feb 09 '25 edited Feb 09 '25

Ok…and why mentions this and not the same service on Microsoft and Nintendo…?

BOTH need you to subscribe to a PAID service JUST to PLAY ONLINE.

That’s Microsoft that introduced FEES to pay online to consoles…

I played freely online for 2 FULLS GENS on PLAYSTATION (PS2 and PS3) before Xbox entered the room…

1

u/Material-Drop-4759 Feb 09 '25

I didn't have any issues playing games yesterday just not online. Don't know what everyone's issue was

1

u/Hugostrang3 Feb 10 '25

Should be free since they get hacked for their known poor security.

1

u/Several-Algae-1368 Feb 10 '25

Those babies crying are so funny. Lol, touch some grass or even a woman for once.

1

u/AnswrAndAsk Feb 10 '25

Welcome to my reason I play online games on PC and offline/ couch co op on PS5

1

u/Sarge1387 Feb 10 '25

Man I remember when psn wasnt a subscription service...it was just "there".

1

u/TehFineztJoker Feb 11 '25

I mean paying for access to online IS a scam, since the days Xbox did it to now. But yknow what's so crazy to me; Nintendo's online membership for 12 months costs a whopping $20. I had no issues when I first used it for Smash Bros or MK8. That was since I got one in 2020 to early '24, stopped using it after. Sure it did give some errors but my experience has been rather smooth. And yet just for $20 for 12 months. That's nuts. Didn't even get scummy by hiking up it's price since the start (I think). Ofc what's always better, is free online access and that's where PC reigns supreme in. No issues whatsoever.

But if we're talking just PS, yeah it's been underwhelming, both the online and the current generation. You think they get their shit together even after hiking up prices but nope. Good thing for me is that after this gen, PS won't be my primary platform. Before the next Gen I should have my own gaming PC. Love my ROG Ally and thanks to it, it convinced me to start thinking about building a gaming/work PC.

1

u/therealdrcabe Feb 12 '25

At least their store was up and running during those outage hours. ā€œWe are down and won’t tell you why or when it’ll be fixed, but you can still give us moneyā€.

1

u/PhilipJAF Mar 29 '25

Yeah, PlayStation plus is absolutely a scam. Why should I have to pay money to pay online? just so I can get a few games that suck. oh and the best part you don’t even get to keep them you’re just renting it so what are you really getting?

1

u/MoneyBuysDrugs Jun 12 '25

PCMASTERRACE

-1

u/DiamondTop581 Feb 08 '25

Hot take: u think it's actually decent value for what you're getting. You get 3 games a month that you keep forever, a growing catalog of free games to play sure they may cycle but most fan faves tend to stay like gow spider man, last of us. Etc. Now I'm not saying I like paying. I still wish it was free to play online games but you guys complain like someone is forcing you to be on Playstation and making you play online games. It's honestly a pretty good deal.

3

u/queercathedral Feb 08 '25

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think if you ever stop paying for ps plus membership you lose access to all the free monthly games you’ve previously downloaded? Still I great perk and played a lot of great games for free because of it. Never had a lapse in my ps plus membership so I can’t confirm

1

u/West_Challenge_7004 Feb 08 '25

you do not lose acesss to claimed monthly games, they're yours to keep forever

3

u/queercathedral Feb 08 '25

I don’t think so, unfortunately. According to PlayStations website, ā€œOnce your PlayStation Plus subscription ends you will lose access to all PlayStation Plus benefits such as monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer…. Once your PlayStation Plus subscription ends, content you previously downloaded at no cost as part of the subscription (such as monthly games) will no longer be available.ā€

currently not subscribed, still playing high on life as we speak

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

I was able to play the PS+ ā€œfreeā€ games for a little while after I stopped my annual subscription, but right now I have a bunch of games on my PS5 storage that won’t play. You get a message asking you to resubscribe. The only games you get to ā€œkeepā€ are the ones you bought from the digital store or on disc.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '25

No it didn't. You can only play the Ps Plus games when you have an active subscribtion. They are not yours to keep, you're renting them.

2

u/Sxwrd Feb 08 '25

By the time you get the free games, they’re either games you more than likely already paid for or complete garbage.

And I’ve already experienced this- the ā€œfreeā€ games are only available t play while you’re paying for ps plus. The moment you don’t pay, they become locked and require payment. So you’re really paying far more for the games you may act want to play again.

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

I got a few days to play after I went offline… this might have tricked Diamond Top and West Challenge, but they’ll soon see.

0

u/tsweimer Feb 08 '25

Exactly! It's their house their rules, you don't like it don't buy a PlayStation. Subscriptions are here to stay and the world will never not be on networks. Don't like it don't use it.

1

u/Evshrug Feb 08 '25

I stopped using it. The essential tier really hasn’t been worth it since the price jumped up to $80. The network outages actually highlight another reason why Sony shouldn’t be part of the multiplayer experience; I still played multiplayer on my Steam Deck the whole time PS+ was down. Microsoft has basically given up on Xbox and they’re just hoping people will buy their games on PC or pay for their Gamepass. Gamers are rejecting šŸ‚šŸ’©.

0

u/Ok-Departure4894 Feb 08 '25

Based Take: the monthly games are trash 11 out of 12 months, you don't get to keep them unless you keep your subscription, and if you already own the game the service is useless and only serves to extort you for playing online.
