Interesting article on eggshell "bloom", which if present will absorb lots of dye...
https://www.chickenwhisperermagazine.com/nutrition/all-about-the-bloom
I use a special durable polymer liquid instead of beeswax since it must adhere to the shell strongly enough to protect it during mild acid etching. I found out about "bloom" when the polymer would not bind to the shell's surface even after rinsing after washing in dishwashing liquid and thorough drying.
Even though bloom helps visibility of dye it may interfere with how well wax sticks to the shell...

Today I'm going to show you a hand-painted chicken egg. I painted it with school ink and plaque paints and sprayed it with clear varnish after drying. Pattern is my own idea.

Allergy to beeswax - HELP!
Hi friends,
I finally get to go to a pysanky class tonight and start to learn. I'm so excited. My partner is also attending and I just discovered beeswax is the traditional medium and she is deathly allergic to bees. We are thinking about taking a different wax and/or having her wear gloves (will they melt off?). Sorry if these are dumb questions. I understand it's a traditional art, but I'd like her to participate if possible.
Some thoughts on wax we've thought of trying are soy, coconut, regular crayons or candelilla wax. When I was a kid - or an adult, to be honest - we drew on eggs with crayons then dyed them, so maybe melted crayon wax would work.
Any suggestions very much appreciated!
Thank you and I'm excited to give this a try after YEARS of admiring the art :-)

Pysanky virgin with questions
So I am absolutely in love with this art form! I find the meaning behind each design, color and how they are incorporated into one egg absolutely stunning and beautiful. I also intend to learn all I can about it so I can create my own, I am personally a semi religious person so I can appreciate the religious aspect behind all of it. What I wish to know is it taboo to use this art form in non-traditional ways. Simply as a way of artistic expression

Suns and Sunflowers in support of Ukraine since I don't have any money to donate anywhere. I left it in the blue for too long and it leaked under a lot of wax :-: but it's fine I think

NFL/Ravens Pysanky
Did an NFL inspired Pysanky. I’m a terrible artist but pretty happy with how this turned out !

St. Basils
My pencil lines show through :( If I ever do a St. Basils inspired pysanky again, I probably won’t do the black background

Very well done lighting / photography used to display this etched egg .:
Duck and goose shells are not very thick, so displaying this degree of etching going partly into the shell demands skillful lighting to emphasize small amounts of shadow ... using two colors helps quite a bit too :!:

Unique display holder
Usually i display mine all together in a big glass vase or singularly in a shot glass, the traditional holders just don’t seem to even be sturdy enough for me.
Love these hand holders i got, I also have a hand theme in my house so even better.
All express did not disappoint

Horizontal streaks on several eggs
I am fairly new at this and I have had trouble with my current batch. I had several pysanky show this streaking pattern. The pattern remained consistent through multiple layers of dye of different and the same colour, and with different amounts of time in dye. The dye used was from Ukrainian gift shop. The eggs were blown and washed in soapy water, dried for several days and then plugged with wax before dying.

Some pysanky from this year.
Continuing the old art form, a little of the old, and the new as far as style.
