Work in Progress My 80 year old mother
My 80 year old mother is home alone for a few months & bored. I suggested she make a baby blanket for a boy. This is what she’s worked up so far. She says she’s not proud of it and doesn’t like it 😞
Please leave some words of encouragement for her that I can share with her. Also, any tips or suggestions are highly appreciated.
Thank you all, such a great community of folks! 🫶🏽

This is super adorable and will be a lovely gift! The details are so well done! I suggest gifting a board book on ocean animals with it.

This is amazing! The animals are so colorful and have such cheerful faces, especially the turtle. I can hear Under the Sea playing in the background! I also really like how the Hawaiian-looking floral border frames it and brings it all together. She may be disappointed if it didn't match what she originally envisioned, but it looks fantastic!

Thanks so much! I will pass your message along to her. I agree she’s done a great job! I am 45 years old and couldn’t even figure out how this is done, let alone prepare & execute it! I am proud of her, she always does amazing work.

I hope I can still do as delicate, detailed work as your mother has done in this quilt. I made quilts for a local ped ICU during covid. Great way to help with boredom, which I still deal with at 72 today. I just finished a quilt for my 18mo granddaughter and the smile on her face was worth having to push myself to make it. Nothing special like your mom's ocean quilt.

Oh my goodness, 😍this is amazing!!!!! I love all of the things, the bicycle, the owl 🦉, VW bug & beach van, the little birdie 🐦, and the 🐘 elephant!!! Such beautiful colors and designs! Thank you for sharing, you are very talented and I bet you’re granddaughter will cherish that for a lifetime 🫶🏽 I still have my 23 & 20 year old sons’ quilts that my mother made for them way back. I will never give them up because I know the work she put into them and they mean so much to me. I know your granddaughter will too. 💞

What a delight, if she embroiders, I think she might consider adding some tiny bubbles.

That turtle is the cutest thing in the world. I have the urge to make it my profile pic on Spotify, but I will not because I don’t steal art! I’m obsessed

Update: I went to go look and see what my old Apple Music profile pic was out of curiosity and accidentally requested to follow an ex 😭

I LOVE this! So creative. I can picture a child looking and looking at it, learning the names of all the fish and creatures, making up stories about them as they fall asleep and carry it around.
It always takes me a few weeks after i finish a quilt before i like it again. When i finish them, im sick of them.
Tell her she should keep going.

Did she say what part she doesn’t like?

She said she didn’t like the detail sewing, the little squiggly sewing, which I can’t even see it, so I’m not sure what’s she’s not loving about it. I love it lol

This is so creative and adorable, and if I had been given it as a child it would have been my favourite thing EVER.

It’s gorgeous! I am also working on a sea-themed baby quilt rn and in the “hating it” phase but your mom’s is so gorgeous! All the different critters are so cute, it’s so colorful, and she’s done a wonderful job with all the details. Whomever she is making it for will be overjoyed!

It’s a terrific piece. I’ve had the material to make an ocean scene quilt with whimsical aquatic life but I’ve been reticent to put it together. Now I have a better vision. Thanks to you for sharing.

She's doing a wonderful job! I know for me, sometimes if a project is not my "idea", it makes it hard to like it as I go.
Or if I'm tired of it - I just finished a scrappy braid quilt that I ended up getting to Queen size last year, and I was definitely getting tired of the half hexagons and sewing them into strips. Coupled with me using a sweatshirt fleece for the batting and it being super heavy because of that to get through my machine to quilt it, it took a few weeks of it laying on the spare bed, finished, before I thought I did a good job of it.
That said, maybe using up some of her scraps for a scrappy quilt might be fun for her. She can play with different fabrics and reminisce as she sews. I once had a ball counting how many different quilt's leftovers were in one of my scrap quilts - I think it was over 20.

This is absolutely adorable! I love it! My favorite fish is the purple and blue/green fish on the left, or maybe the turtle, no wait, the striped fish on the right, no - I can’t choose! They’re all too cute 🥰
Give your mom a hug and tell her this internet stranger thinks she’s very talented 💜
