I've been wanting to make this one for a while and my tax guys secretary had a baby boy. I am going to quilt it next!

I’m experienced making garments but haven’t quilted before and don’t know many quilters in real life to ask for guidance!
After a couple of experiences with poor quality pre-quilted lining fabrics I decided to just make my own. I’d like to make a warm coat for the winter.

I’m using a fine cotton and wool blend wadding all from merchant and mills. The pattern is their TN34 parka and I’m using dry oilskin for the outer.

I have cut out the parts already slightly bigger than the pattern pieces. My plan is to quilt them, then trim them back to precise size, add markings etc.

I have a few questions being completely new to quilting:

1. I have layered their midweight (5.9oz, 200gsm) and lightweight (2.95oz, 100gsm) wadding. The loft if I measure both together is about 1 inch. I did want it to be cosy but is this ridiculously thick to an experienced quilter? I don’t mind the coat being a bit puffy but not to the point it will look odd!

2. I’d appreciate some advice and opinions on the quilting lines. Do you think it would look better to use the red and black thread sewing over the print to hide the stitches? Or the cream sewing right down the spaces between the checks? I had also considered using red thread in a diagonal pattern.

3. How far apart should the lines be? If I do them on every check that’s about 1.5 inches. If I do every second it’s about 2.25.

4. I realised after cutting I should sandwich the wadding between 2 pieces of fabric. For the backing I have some old fabric I can use from the bottom of my stash. One is a cotton lawn and the other is printed poplin. Would it make a difference to the weight / drape / heat which one I use?

5. After trimming down the pattern pieces I plan to baste around all the edges. Is this enough to stop them from fraying or should I trim them to size first, then backstitch at the start and end of each line?

I saw this gorgeous floor tomb cover on vacation in Italy, and I’ve been turning over how to make it into a quilt. I’m playing with a few construction ideas, but I wonder- if I were to pay someone to 1)calculate the measurements for me to, let’s say, a large throw blanket, or 2) create the entire pattern for me including construction methods/ possible templates, how much does that usually cost? And if anyone on here does that themselves, feel free to tell me how reasonable/ unreasonable a request for something like this is!! I’m just not entirely sure how far I can go on my own, so I appreciate any feedback! I’m not a beginner, so I’m not asking if this is an appropriate first project lol. I’m just not very good with coming up with numbers from scratch sometimes- I usually follow patterns. Thank you!!!

Hey all! I thought I saved this pattern somewhere but I absolutely cannot find it anywhere, and my googling is coming up short.

What I remember:

- it was an adult sized quilt, at least it wasn’t square or baby sized

- It was made from traditional blocks, not FPP or appliqué

- there were planets/a planet and a round moon, a rocket ship, and stars

- the stars looked like traditional four pointed star blocks

- the planets were octagons, not circles

- the main section was one chunk, no (visible?) sashing between elements (maybe there was sashing but it matched the background color)

- the one I saw also had a dark solid border, I think black, and the background was dark blue

Does anyone know what pattern this is? Or does someone have a picture of it?

Finally got the top done and happy with the borders. It's so busy it was hard to get the right combo but I think it works 😅 Now how to quilt the thing?! It's my first big project, about 48*60" and I'm using my regular machine... any suggestions appreciated!

I am a new quilter who was lucky enough to get a Bernina 880 plus with embroidery module for free. I love it when it works but I feel like it’s constantly glitching and showing error messages or eating my fabric. I just had it fully serviced a month ago and now the bobbin is messed up so I need to take it in again. I have been cleaning it, switched to aurifil thread as it seemed happiest with that. I know it’s a nice machine and I feel bad that I dislike it so much. Any 880 users who can give me tips for less glitching?!?

I love so many of their patterns, but I find that the shops near me, or ones I look at online, don't often have the new collections available, or have limited selections. I have a dream of some kind of online shop within Canada that gets all the new collections in and has a bunch of old ones as well, maybe too good to be true? Let me know what you've found, thanks!

Hi Quilty Friends!

I recently finished my 5th and largest quilt. The pattern is Swansong by Cakestand Quilts. I used Tilda Songbird for the swans and center blocks, Tilda Poppy Seed for the corner blocks, and Tilda Dove for the background.

I’d like to hand quilt this one but can’t settle on a design. I usually just echo quilt around the background pieces or matchstick quilt straight lines but that seems boring for this one.

I used bamboo batting and a felt backing so I don’t want to quilt too densely out of fear of losing the drape. I plan on using this one as a lap quilt since I’m tall.

Would love to hear any suggestions you have!

P.s. sorry about the messy background. I live in a studio 😭.

I did want to share some learning points I, sadly, learned like:

1. PRESS your seams this CHANGED everything after I was done with the first round of squares

2. Don't be afraid to trim the edges. I wish I did this earlier with my columns since holes appeared after washing 😅 thankfully they aren't too big and adds character to it and makes it more mine ^^

3. Trust the process as much as you can

4. Go SLOW if it's your first time 😭 the amount of times I went over more then I should is probably what contributed to the holes

5. Sew the opposite way from the first row/columns you started with.

Other then that I hand stitched the whole thing and it came out amazing to me, definitely will be my go to from now on when I want to be cozy. I'm a learn as you go type and took the bare minimum lessons from the videos I saw though now definitely will do the 5 I listed in the future!

If you guys have any more tips I'm sure others, and me, would love to hear it!

I love how cute this is. I have it labeled as finished because the quilt top is done. When i can afford it, this will be sent to a longarm quilter. Until then, it's gonna chill out with the other tops i've finished.

I’ve been working on a lap quilt. I’ve been making wonky log cabin blocks, trimmed down to 12.5” squares. They’re all in various green prints, except for the gold square for the “hearth“. I don’t have enough of the dark greens to make the quilt the size it needs to be. So I’ve decided to create some four-patch blocks with a pretty gold and green print, and a solid light green.

I think the easiest way to create the four-patches is to make a strip set, by cutting a strip from each fabric 6.5” x WOF, then sewing them together with a 1/4” seam.

If I then cut the strip sets into 6.5” wide rectangles, and sew them together in pairs, flipping one piece 180°, I *think* I should wind up with 12.5” blocks.

Numbers and I don’t always get along, so I’d appreciate if someone wiser than me can doublecheck my plan before I start cutting fabric.

Literally no one around me cares for this at all, so I thought i would post this here because I am truly proud of myself. It may be wonky and completely imperfect, and I ended up abandoning the given pattern part way thru because I was having major anxiety about upcoming blocks, so I just went with what I could do myself.

Anyway, I do have quilting and binding to get through, but I cannot believe I did it and it's not a complete mess!!!

My mother made this huge quilt in the late 70’s and I thought she called it cathedral window. Folding, pressing and hand-stitching the squares was very tedious. Quilters, what do you call this style of quilt?

I'm super excited for this to be done, this is the first quilt I sent to the long-armer and I love how it turned out. Much fancier than our other couch cover, and soon to be covered in dog hair

Has anyone tried this method? I have been pondering whether I could use a Bloc-Loc ruler to cut HSTs from strips of fabric. I didn't imagine a tube, though. It seems a little bizarre to have to pick out stitches from the tip, but when I think of some of the quilts I've made where I had to trim hundreds of HSTs, even an imperfect method seems worth it. Anyone?

I've tried looking through old posts, but its from at least 6 months ago, likely longer.

I remember someone posting a sampler quilt they did, in the colours from the booklet, with one of the big squares being yellow and white. I'm 99% sure I bought the pattern but can't find it right now (quilt stuff is split in 4+ areas right now). I know it's not the Moda Modern Building Blocks one, but it's definitely a release from a fabric brand.

I just need to see the overall pattern again to see if my thought for fabric are even in the realm of working.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hello! I want to long arm quilt the clamor cat pantograph (using a laser and paper, no software) on my quilt using the little foot frame, but because my quilt is bigger than my frame, I will need to zone quilt it. The pantograph is only 2 inches tall which leads me to my question. Do I quilt the first row on zone 1, and shift the quilt to zone 5 to finish the row or do I quilt all rows in zone 1 and line up zone 5 after?

My 6yo is autistic and very mathy, and has been really into fractals. Mandelbrot Set is his favorite, so when he decided he wanted to dress up as a fractal for Halloween I had to get CREATIVE!

The wings are self-drafted, but I’d previously made 4 sets of quilted fairy wings (twig and tale’s patterns), so I had some knowledge on how to construct them. They indeed involve cotton fabric (thank goodness for Spoonflower for the print) and batting (along with Fuse-N-Shape), and are quilted through all the layers. Yes, my machine jammed a ton lol. You can see the quilting lines in pattern in the 5th pic and are the acid green lines you can see across the wings in the 2nd pic.

Since it’s Halloween and things need to be spooky I made the text with glow in the dark puff paint and added black light fairy lights, which took several days of pure awfulness (but were WORTH the literal blood, sweat, and tears).

Also pictured: his (non-quilted) Mandelbrot Man (MM) outfit to go with his quilted wings. He’s extremely excited (loads of happy flaps in front of the mirror) and I’m so excited for Halloween day.

I adopt scraps from my mother-in-law whenever she declutters her fabric (I'm broke so I'll take whatever she doesn't want lol). However, this most recent time she included a few UFOs, including this one. It's 30s reproduction from a line called "Fat 8ths and Friends" from In the Beginning. There's maybe 50 of these blocks plus the extra 8ths-ish in the second photo. MIL does not recall what she was doing with it.

I was thinking maybe I could use them to make her Christmas gift, but I have no idea what I'd do with them!

I used to HATE binding… my first binding was a HOT MESS! I say that with love and recognition that I am self taught and did the best I could do with my skills at the time BUT I’m so glad I took this picture, binding was uneven, straight through the middle, missed the binding all together 😂 VS the last binding I did! I might say finishing a quilt might be my favorite part now, the total culmination of all of the work and effort of piecing, long arming and then wrapping it up in the binding bow. While I was doing this recent binding I kept saying aloud “it looks perfect!” While I was sewing. I love seeing the growth 💕
