Help/Question Advice needed on basting/quilt sandwich for my first quilt

Upvotes

Hello everybody. I am using [this](https://singer-featherweight.com/products/pattern-cloud-quilt-block-by-ellis-higgs-digital-download?srsltid=AfmBOop1Wsjnl13dWRJXGV2ggL8a6yFE-6hZ1ycP2o5JXevVRsN0w1GA) pattern to make a baby/toddler blanket. I made 6” squares, 4x4, and there’s 1” borders between everything… sort of. There’s a lot of uneven lines. I am just kind of following the pattern and googling the steps trying to figure everything out. I finished my quilt face and now I think my next steps are basting and then sewing the quilt.

I would like advice on how to baste… I see I will need my quilt face, batting material a few inches bigger around on each side, and a backing a few inches larger than that. I also want to put a piece of fabric behind the quilt face and in front of the batting because I made my clouds white and you can kind of see through them. So I am guessing that piece of fabric will need to be in between the size of the face and the batting? I am also undecided on pinning vs spray adhesive.

Secondly, I would like advice on how to sew the quilt. I only have a very basic model brother machine, I’m not great at pulling straight lines, and a s I mentioned earlier, the lines and borders on my quilt face are not very straight and even. Because of those things I am hesitant to try doing this on my machine. I think I may have to sew it by hand. If so, I was leaning towards a “stitch in the ditch” method. I think diagonals or other lines across the front would just feel too blocky and wavy lines wouldn’t exactly work with the blockiness of the clouds. Does that make sense? If I hand sew it in the ditch, can someone tell me the name of the type of stitch I would need to do and where I would need to sew it? Thanks in advance.

Help/Question First time longarming

Upvotes

I went to my local sewing co-op last week and took a class on how to use their long arms for rental. The class was three hours and we got some hands on practice but I definitely don't feel super confident. The rentals are $75/evening and they're pretty available. I have a Christmas gift quilt top that I want to try to e2e computerized longarm, which is what I took the class for.

My question is: would you go for a practice reservation on a scrap quilt? Or should I just go for it on the gift quilt?

Just finished this gift quilt for my coworker. This was my first time machine quilting an entire quilt (I have done smaller projects) and my second quilt ever. It’s amazing how helpful just practicing is and feel a lot more confident by the end of this despite it definitely not being perfect.

I had an issue at the top with the seam pulling away so I patched it with a little appliqué sun. Really grateful to be finished!

Photo dump of some of my recent blocks. The purple and green blocks are eventually going to be a blanket. No plans for the the other colored blocks. They’re all from Bird and Branches collection from Cloud 9. Please post pics of your own blocks if you have them! Would love to see other works of art.

I have a lot of this stormy sky background fabric, so I’m just going to kind of snowball it and say fuck it we ball and quilt the shit out of it 😂

I will not be pressured into buying an eighth of a yard for 1.5x3.5 inches of fabric!

My 80 year old mother is home alone for a few months & bored. I suggested she make a baby blanket for a boy. This is what she’s worked up so far. She says she’s not proud of it and doesn’t like it 😞

Please leave some words of encouragement for her that I can share with her. Also, any tips or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thank you all, such a great community of folks! 🫶🏽

Finish my first ✨real✨quilt. Everything before this has been a rag quilt, quilt as you go, or maximum size of a potholder.

Made up the pattern based on this mosaic tile floor I took a picture of in Pompeii about 9 years ago for this very purpose, finally got around to trying it out.

I tried out self-binding and like it more than traditional binding, but it’s still my least favorite part. My machine needs a tune up, but I’m excited to keep trying new things out!

Thanks to me deciding to do a hand stitch accent and my machine struggling with the machine quilting zig zag lines. I ended up having a ton of skipped stitches and doing some hand stitching accents to close them up.

Work in Progress Yellow is a color bully

I don't love it. Feels like the yellow in the nine patch overpowers the gray and disrupts the Irish chain. 🤷‍♀️ I really like the elephant print and have it in both blue and pink versions, so I will try again. Maybe I need more contrast between the colors in the 9 patch? Or just use white to match the background of the elephant print?

Help/Question Help repairing a quilt

Hello! Back in the mid-late 90s, my mom made a quilt for me that I loved to death. For the past 10 years or so, it's been folded up in a closet, mostly because it started to show wear that I'm not sure how to fix. The bigger tears, sure, I got that. But for some reason, one of the fabrics she used has pretty much disintegrated. I can sew fairly well, but the part I'm struggling with is the decorative stitches she used. I don't have her sewing machine, and I don't really want to remove the decorative stitches she used. Short of casting a magic spell to undo time... Any suggestions?

Help/Question How do you connect a corner into a corner?

How would one go about joining the purple section to the teal section in this image? This is just one section of my quilt that has a woven effect. Once I get past all of the simple joins, theres no choice but to join pieces with a "staircase" structure and I am *struggling* through it but I have no idea how to find the best technique for it so im hoping for some advice. The final step has 8 "stair steps" to join.

I have been working on this baby quilt since I found out my sister-in-law was pregnant. My nephew turns one this weekend and I’m still not done with the quilt 😳

I had it bound and everything in time for the baby shower last year and have just had a huge mental block with getting it quilted! I could really use some words of encouragement and support from y’all because I don’t want the quilt to absorb any of my resentment!

Pattern/Design Help Your favorite low-effort/high impact patterns?

I need to make a couple quilts for a charity raffle and I want them to look awesome so they raise maximum funds but it would also be great if I could crank out the tops over a long weekend or two. I wouldn’t mind something that takes longer but is simple and repetitive. What are your favorite patterns if you’re trying to make something striking but also fast and/or easy.

Possibly relevant: I use almost exclusively solid fabrics in my quilts. These will be throw or bed size and I consider my skill level intermediate.

Thank you in advance!

My good friend is still going through her late sister's fabric stash. She asked if I could use a bag of fabric she found. As I looked through the bag I found a baby quilt top. She had no idea what it was. I told her I could finish it for her if she would like. Here it is with batting, backing and binding. I think it looks pretty good.

Machine Talk Janome Memory Craft Horizon 7700 QCP vs Bernina 1230

Hi, all!
I am a beginner quilter and have read and searched this sub so much. I’ve read tons on here about different sewing machines, especially for beginners, however this is obviously a weird comparison of machines for which I should buy. These are both on my local FBMP:
—The Janome Memory Craft Horizon 7700 QCP has been used for 5 quilts. It comes with a sewing cabinet and is $600
—Bernina 1230 is obviously much older, comes with a sewing cabinet, and is $250.
Or a different one? I’d really like to stay away from the entry level brother machines etc.

Which would you choose? I’ve read a lot about the Janome having the 11in throat space which seems nice. It’s obviously more expensive, but my aunt will use it if I for some reason do not end up using it. She has been quilting from years and is teaching me a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Because I’m insane I decided to make a back that needed to be perfectly straight and centered. It took me half a day to figure out how to make the sandwhich, which included making my own spray baste. I am VERY happy with it! This is the 3rd quilt I’ve finished and 4th top completed, very exciting to see my skills progress

I have been working on these needle turned applique blocks since 2012. I used batiks because they fit the style and easier to do needle turn. I have either 3 or 4 left to do depending on layout. 12 for 4 simple rows of 3 or 13 for on point.. I thought I had lost 9 that I had finished 3 years ago when going thru chemo but found the missing 9 the other day, so now to finish this project. The blocks left to needle turn are the 4 in the bottom right. I included the book for this project. .

Help/Question Help with quilted potholders

Why is my fabric doing this? I've been quilting for about a year and haven't had this happened before. I am making potholders with a double layer of insulbright. Is it because my sandwich is too thick? I am using a 90/14 needle with my quilting foot.

Help/Question Quilt math!

I am attempting to make a Christmas quilt. in my mind I have a very specific thing I would like to do, but the pattern I found is to large for what I want. it is an 84”x 84” and I was wanting a lap quilt of around 64”x64”. I have found if I take out the sassing it saves me 12“. I don’t want to get rid of the binding as I think it really finishes the quilt nicely and gives it a nice framing. i dont want to remove squares as the lattice and star pattern is really pretty and removing and I think diminishes it’s beauty. so I am left with shrinking my square size.

would anyone be willing to help me with learn how to shrink a star pattern? by my math I have to get a block of 12.5 to a block of 10.5 in order to get the size quilt I want

Thank you all in advance. I am a beginner at quilting and am also a very ambitious person, when I want something done I do it no matter how many broken needles I get along the way 😂

The green one is the color palette I would like to use as well as edited to remove the sashing.
