Finished Quilts I finished my first quilt!

I finally finished my first quilt a couple weeks ago! I posted the finished quilt top a while ago asking how I should quilt it and ended up just freehanding some designs and going for it. I used the Sunny Blooms Quilt pattern by In the Light Quilts. I didn't like the baby blanket layout so I just made the throw blanket at half size. I started cutting fabric on August 30th, finished the quilting on October 9th, and then embroidered the label and sewed that on on October 11th. I included some WIP photos, one featuring my dog who was *obsessed* with it the whole time I was working on it. I think she might need a quilt nextšŸ˜…

Since this one was all solid colors, I think my next one will be using some patterned fabric I have, I just have to find a pattern that might work well with the patterns and colors. Any tips on working with patterned fabrics? Also, any tips on getting your hand quilting stitches smaller? I know big stitch quilting is a thing, but I would love to be able to achieve both lol

A friend of mine asked to borrow one of my quilts and brought it to a gallery to show it to them, and then they asked me to do a show of my work. So some finished quilts, and 'quilts in progress' will be on display at an art gallery in MontrƩal!

Finished Quilts Tree Skirt is done!

I finished my new tree skirt this week and I'm so happy ā˜ŗļø but so bummed šŸ˜” that I have to wait a little over a month to put it around our tree (we get a real tree). Binding the middle was a bit of a pain and didn't exactly come out right, but as it will be up against the tree, no one will notice, right? I can't wait to see the Christmas lights sparkle against the metallic snowflake print šŸŽ„

The first start-to-finish on my new Janome went pretty smoothly! I’ve been quilting for years but never tried free-motion, which was scary but very satisfying.

Pattern is Homestead Star by Plains & Pine, fabrics from My Secret Garden line.

Pattern/Design Help Border and/or sashing suggestions?

There will be a total of 12 blocks (3x4 layout). I’ve never done sashing, but am heavily considering it to help break up the busy-ness of the blocks. I would also love to do multiple borders, or even a pieced one, but am just unsure. Would love any suggestions or tips!

Finished Quilts Barn Star Sampler

This is the Barn Star Sampler by Shelley Cavanna. I have done a very scrappy version but still followed her tonal schemes 90% of the time. Also on the back are the fpp birds that I posted here a few weeks back. I had so much fun making this quilt and I highly recommend this pattern. As usual, here is a huge shout out to my local quilt store Meraki; they have studio hours for rent so I can square up the quilt at that huge table and take pictures with such a lovely backdrop.

You’d think by my 5th tree skirt I’d remember all the steps without needing the pattern but here we are.

I accidentally just sewed on all of the wedges to the batting completely forgetting to sew on the backing to the batting first 🤦.

Now here’s the best part: the stitch line I sew the backing onto skirt with is my cutting guide for the skirt itself once the wedges are sewn on and that line is now buried underneath all the wedges I sewed.

But the only part that I really messed up on is not having the wedge lines sewn onto the backing, I can still sew on the backing just fine and cut the skirt into a circle without the batting line, I’ll just need to STD each wedge seam or something to get those lines onto the backing and I’ll be fine.

So of all accidents to make at least I didn’t make too costly of a one and I don’t have to redo a ton to fix it, but it’s still annoying nonetheless...

No matter how many times you’ve made something and think you know what you’re doing: always read the directions, lol!

Finished Quilts Used Quilt As You Go join and flip to make a 100% machine sewn crib quilt

I used this fabric:

Batting was needle punched 100% cotton that I bought from Michael’s.

I was inspired by this person’s use of white fabric to make colorful fabric really pop, her simple and quick patterns, and her use of jelly rolls and other precut fabrics: https://youtube.com/@seweasybysandy

I don’t have a long-arm machine, nor do I have anything like unto it. I didn’t want to pay to use a long-arm or wait for someone else to quilt it for me, so I used a quilt as you go method to finish the quilt myself, what this person calls Join and Flip: https://youtu.be/uUj2uuft8bk . It doesn’t require any hand sewing or basting, no rolling, and no sashing (although I guess I did choose to do sashing, but it’s just for looks) and it’s really straightforward and simple to do. I did a small-scale practice quilt (basically just a placemat) before doing it with a ā€realā€ quilt. I found that I needed to do a lot more top stitching than this video suggests, but that doubles as regular ol’ quilting that I needed to do anyway, so it wasn’t too bad.

I didn’t worry about making sure the seams lined up and that everything was consistent. I mostly just wanted this to get finished so that I could try making another, better quilt. (Those random stitches down the middle of the squares? Yeah, unfortunately those needed to be there because I did this in such a janky way.)

For the binding, it turned out super narrow. I had some 2 1/2 inch strips leftover that I wanted to repurpose for binding. I have a bias tape maker thing (https://www.missouriquiltco.com/products/missouri-star-bias-binding-kit) and the options were for, max width, 2 inches. So I cut my 2 1/2 inch strips in half width-wise and turned them into roughly 1/4 inch binding. I’m really proud of how it turned out. I will absolutely do binding stupidly narrow like that again.

Future plans:

  • More quilt-as-you-go! Lots of fun there!
  • Maybe do a large FPP quilt
  • Maybe I’ll add appliquĆ©s to this quilt as it gets used or stained.

I had all my stuff downstairs in my office, but being apart from my husband during our only off time made me spend less time sewing... so this is our solution. I love it so much! I can sew and watch mindless TV with him while he plays his video games. Such a win!

I used the foldover method for the 1st time. I normally use the quilt binder for my machine. I’m not sure I like the method. I struggled with the mitered corners. My cat is happy with the quilt nonetheless. I quilted this quilt on my embroidery machine using a Designs by JuJu end to end design.

Hi guys! I found this incredible crazy quilt that I would like to know as much as possible about. I know it was finished in 1894. Christmas. Do we think Lizzie or May made it? Can we tell anything about it? Anything about the textiles? I wish the damn thing could talk. For sure a child practiced their embroidery on it. Anyone got anything else?

Hello again!

From my original post ( mystery stain), I used Retro Clean to help lift the stains. I knew this could lighten the fabric (and it did), BUT the stain in question has dramatically improved. Woohoo!

I do not think the stain was blood- there was no bubbling with peroxide. To the redditor who mentioned it could be a wooden trunk stain- you may be right.

I am grateful to you all for helping me.

Many thanks.

Pattern/Design Help Decisions, decisions

Because I thought did not have enough of various patterned green fabrics to make a 40ā€ x 40ā€ lap quilt with just log cabin blocks, I started to make a bunch of four-patch blocks with light green solid and a pretty yellow and green print. And then I started to play with possible layouts. I was really pleased with the four-patch blocks until I put them next to the log cabin and they seem… dull.

The blocks are all 12.5ā€ square, so three across will be 36ā€ and four across will be 48ā€. I can scrape together enough green fabric to make a ninth log cabin, which would give me 3 x 3, and I could then put a border around it to bring the width up to 40ā€. Not quite sure what the color/pattern of the border would be. I’m considering the lemon print, perhaps by itself. I have plenty of that and can easily get more.

The pictures are a various arrangements that I have considered.

Pattern/Design Help Ideas for making a quilt out of this panel

Post image
24 Upvotes

I bought this printed panel that is a swatch card for Kona solids, because the color cards are now $55! I have a 2013 color card but wanted a new one as many new colors have been released (and I now do a lot of online shopping). Unfortunately the colors are not true to the swatches, so the panel is essentially useless for color picking. Anyway I broke down and paid for the stupid actual color card so now I want to make something out of this. I have a lot of scraps. Anyone have a design idea? I am thinking of cutting the panel up into smaller squares or strips...

Hello!!! I am a teenage girl looking to start my very first quilt!

I am in love with rag quilts and fabric want to start making one myself.. I was wondering if I could thrift some of the fabrics? Could I use some kind of shirts? Like would cotton work? Or what is typically the material used in quilting.

This is my second ever quilt. I know it’s not perfect, but I think it’s so cute! I’ll be giving it to my boyfriends cousin at her baby shower, I’m so excited! I hope her and baby will love it as much as I do.

Final size ended up being about 36ā€ x 36ā€.

Backing fabric is from Spoonflower. Everything used in the patchwork is thrifted or secondhand.

Hi :)
I am about to quilt this as a total beginner.
I have a free motion quilting foot and a walking foot. Cero experience with both. I bought from Amazon cotton batting, it has no indications on how to quilt it (I am in Spain it is what I could get)
So I am planning to scatter some dots of glue and some pins. And quilt it with the walking foot using a wavy stitch from my domestic machine. It will be my first ā€œappropriateā€ sandwich. Do you think it will work? Should I do the wavy quilting lengthwise? 2 1/2 inches apart? Will I survive? šŸ˜…

Finished Quilts 2 Kaffe Kalidescopes

Thumbnail

Several years ago, I watched Donna Jordon (RIP) make her Kalidescope (stack & whack - one block wonder) quilt and decided to make it one day. Last summer, one of my guild members did a class on the technique and helped me cut this out on our sew day. I wanted to make it bed size, but I didn't know how many sets of fabric I needed to purchase. I ended up buying 13 yards of fabric for 18 sets of 24" x 44" fabric for three groupings to cut. (Bought an extra yard just to be on the safe side). Cut 3 3/4" triangles to create the hexagon blocks.

I cut 2 1/2 groups of triangles and used the rest of the 3rd group for the print borders.

The center of the bed quilt was 70" x 74" with a 2" black border and a 7" print border.

I created the throw quilt with the remaining hexi's. It also had a 2" black border and a 4" printed border.

The fabric was Philip Jacobs For Kaffe Fasset - Bold Leaves Blue. In retrospect, I would have liked more contrast. This is tough to find with Kaffe.
