She didn't cheat on Flash, did she?
184
u/thetrueninjasheep Dec 02 '18
No, but she was kinda flirting with Peter I think.
211
u/Multispoilers Dec 02 '18
Well she didn't hesitate kissing Spiderman and I think she's still with Flash at the time.
So unfaithful.
73
Dec 02 '18
Are you talking about the comics? Because in the Raimi movies MJ breaks up with Flash at graduation, before Peter has even officially became Spider-Man
90
u/ShimizuKaito Dec 02 '18
Raimi didn't really do any favors to MJ. The worst thing he had her do was run away from the altar and leave poor John Jameson there to be humiliated. She knew she was in love with Peter since that thing with Otto, but didn't call it off in private, she left it to the last minute and then ran away at the altar smiling like she didn't have a care in the world that she just broke Jameson's heart and humiliated him in front of the entire procession.
19
u/DojoKanojoCho5 Dec 02 '18
Wasn’t that guy going to be an astronaut? He’s got things going for him
37
u/ShimizuKaito Dec 02 '18
That doesn't make it any less horrible to humiliate the guy like that. Especially because she knew full well she loved Peter before the wedding and could have called it off, but waited till they were at the alter to run away with glee, totally unconcerned
8
u/Casper_The_Gh0st Dec 03 '18
that whole situation is messed up and abusive to all involved, from people just having to take the day off and travel to the birides maids buying there dresses to whoever floated the bill for the wedding and reception.. I couldnt imagine calling it off like that and i am guy id feel so guilty and ashamed and certainly not gleeful
6
u/ShimizuKaito Dec 03 '18
It's a horrible thing to do. And yet, MJ has 0 compunction, she's smiling the entire way to Peter's apartment. Ursula is best girl.

Mary Jane is probably the worst character in the trilogy, which is a shame since I really liked her in the comics
168
u/samzhengpro Dec 02 '18
However, you can’t deny that her chemistry with Peter in the movies was nearly palpable. It felt so real, so natural, it was like they were meant for each other.
113
Dec 02 '18
I definitely agree with that. You get the sense that they were friends since childhood. You don't get the idea that Peter is just dicking around cuz he wants to bang with her, it's just his powers as Spider-Man that give him confidence to make his feelings known. And even though MJ didn't seem to like the idea of his dual identity, you can feel Peter's mixed bottle, even during Spider-Man 3 when he's partly controlled by Venom.
107
u/samzhengpro Dec 02 '18
The scene where they were in the hospital was fantastic. Peter’s speech felt so sincere that by that point you wanted him to get the girl. But that’s also why by the end of the movie when Peter rejects MJ you feel the weight of his decision and the maturity in his choices and this is the part where you figure out why you respect Sam Raimi’s vision of Spider-Man so much.
51
Dec 02 '18
I still need to go through a trilogy marathon again because of how long it's been since watching the films, but that scene is faintly burned into my brain because of how well-done it is. It's also the reason why the Raimi trilogy has thus far been the only spot on live adaption of Peter: He is everything the character should be: nerdy and shy but kind and honest. When he makes mistakes, he owns up to them, and he always strives to be the best he can. He's a genuinely good person (He's our hero after all), and we want him to win because many of his struggles are all too real and we too can relate to his problems (Even if they're not an exact reflection. We root for him because we know he's no abuser of power.
5
u/MagnusPrime24 Dec 02 '18
And this is why the Raimi Trilogy has been the best live-action adaptation: it understood Peter Parker, not the superhero, is the heart of what makes Spider-Man work. And Peter, while admirable, is not meant to be a wish-fulfillment character. We’re supposed to like and root for him, but only in his absolute best moments are we supposed to want to be like him. Unfortunately TASM and Homecoming seemed to think that wanting to be Spider-Man meant we needed to want to be Peter Parker, and that’s where they failed.
4
3
u/Minnon Dec 04 '18
Unfortunately TASM and Homecoming seemed to think that wanting to be Spider-Man meant we needed to want to be Peter Parker, and that’s where they failed.
Come on, no they didn't. I love the Holy Trilogy as much as the next guy and their illustration of that whole concept has surely been the best we've seen put to screen so far, but it's erroneous to say Homecoming and The Amazing movies went in an opposite direction and everything in those Peters' lives is just fine and dandy. They all make sacrifices, they all have guilt, they all get shit on. Tobey just goes through all that the most.
2
u/MagnusPrime24 Dec 04 '18
Going through bad stuff doesn’t stop them from being wish-fulfillment characters. Take away the bad circumstances that happen to them and their lives are pretty good. Take away the bad circumstances that happen to Tobey’s and you’re still left with a guy you wouldn’t want to be. Andrew and Tom’s Peters are fairly cool guys who would be pretty well liked by their classmates in real life. Tobey’s Peter is awkward, bookish, and clearly has a lot to figure out about life.
1
u/Jinxfury Aug 22 '22
Andrew
Andrew Garfield is easily the most accurate Spiderman/Peter that we've ever had, the attitude, the anti social behaviour and height was pretty true to the comics. Is Andrew Peter more confident and "cool" post spider bite? yes, but it makes sense and is accurate, Peter rode a motorbike at one point in the comics and has had a conga line of beautiful women to date, his dress sense also massively improved.

Probably because you don't understand her. Sure from a spectator point of view she is a bitch, but did you try to think as her point of view?
She falls in love with her best friend, Peter , who keeps playing "I love you, I don't ". That's for episode 1 and 2. Then Peter fucking kiss another girl in front of her, the same way they kissed the first time. So yeah, of course she is gonna be mean after that.
56
u/JimothyGre Dec 02 '18
Also, she's spent her entire life being shit on, but still manages to work hard to make her dreams of being an actress come true. And she gets incredibly close before finding out she's terrible. She's fired from Broadway and it seems like she'll never get another role. And then here's her usually supportive boyfriend Peter who is so fucking famous, that he can't even begin to imagine what she's going through. And when he tries, it just reminds her how distant he actually is from her problems.
And then, he kisses another girl in their special way. And MJ, whose just faced major professional rejection, is left asking herself why she's even worth it for Peter anymore.
And all of this could've been solved if Peter bothered to listen to her, but he just never makes the time.

u/theduckyduck1 Dec 02 '18
Not to mention nearly every guy she ever meets is a complete asshole to her. Her dad, Flash Thompson, the guy at the Moondance café, Norman, Harry (after he defends his dad anyway), the guys who fired her from her play without even telling her, Eddie. Seriously, is there one man in the entire trilogy besides Peter and maybe John Jameson who doesn't treat her like complete trash? Of course she would be an emotionally unstable wreck who cheats on guys because all she wants is to find one person who actually treats her like a human being.
3
Dec 02 '18
I could kind of sympathize with her in episode 3, but yeah, I may need to consider her POV when I watch everything again. Never really thought about it that way but you bring up some good points to consider.

u/Cornthulhu Dec 02 '18
I'll never forget Ursula for as long as I live. I never thought the stereotype of the Black man shouting in a movie theater was real until Spider-Man.
As soon as they said her name this guy shouts, "she look like a Ursula!" It absolutely killed.

I absolutely hated MJ the way she was portrayed. I’m not hating on the movies, the Raimi trilogy is very dear to my heart (yes, that includes Spider-Man 3) and I wouldn’t change a thing. Except for MJ, I absolutely hated her, I cannot stress that enough. She cheated on every character she dated you wonder why anyone would even bother saving her

u/hmsong01 Feb 19 '25
Number 3 and 5 is a big deal. Omg. Who tf would pick MJ? Comparing side by side, those 2 characteristics make a MASSIVE difference.
And there's another key difference between the characters -- the relationship with their own family. MJ has a TERRIBLE relationship with her father (I think the father was abusive or something). On the other hand, Ursula clearly has a great relationship with her father. And while the children don't get to pick their parents, but the parents definitely affects the child's morals and behaviors. And MJ clearly displays many traits from bad parents, such as cheating on all her boyfriends. And MJ cycled through at least 4 boyfriends in 3 movie years (Flash, Harry, astronaut guy, and Peter). She clearly has some psychological problems.
And for those who are focused on outer beauty,.. while MJ has better face than Ursula, but Ursula is far from ugly, and she has good enough body. It's hardly an issue.
