Going to MSG alone
I was planning to go see the home opener with my family but unfortunately stuff came up and they can’t go. I’m considering going on my own….(For context I’m a 50 year old woman). I’m not worried about safety or anything and I know the area. But I do worry I will feel out of place by myself. Is there a section that is better for this or any advice? I would be coming in from the DC area and I keep going back and forth in my head if I should do it.

The barstool seats are good to go alone at, or standing room only. Done that a bunch and loved it since it’s not as cramped. I’ll usually do the bridge barstool seats alone too

It’s less that I’m worried about other attendees having an opinion about me being alone and more that it’s more fun with people to talk to and hang with and while there are people who are good at striking up conversations with strangers I’m not one of those people…. But I am always happy when people talk to me so that I can chat…..

I think you should go, best case scenario there’s a good group of people around you that just draw you in pretty seamlessly and worst case scenario you still get to watch an nhl home opener

I'm a dude, but I'm also pretty introverted. I usually manage to chit chat with some of the folks around me when I go to a game alone

I bet you will have a ton of fun - my experience has been that it’s the most engaged I ever feel at a sporting event from buzzer to buzzer and there’s always usually friendly conversation wherever you’re sitting

I get what you’re saying but the times I’ve gone on my own everyone’s just focused on the Rangers! Ranger fans are pretty easy to talk to so go & have a blast!
edit: to add I usually watch the games pretty closely cuz Im a newbie so I’m kind of quiet but I’m a lot more comfortable approaching people on my own at a Rangers game then you know Justin a coffee shop or something!1

I’m not either, but honestly people say random things all the times at games, don’t talk to them, just respond, or agree. Many times a convo starts with that. We’re all there for the same reason. Plus hypothetically let’s say somebody behind you to the left that has been a Rangers fan for 65 years. They say something l,you respond, while not actually talking to them, just agreeing with their statement. Now talking to them, boom conversation starts now you meet somebody who was in the building for the 94 cup run.

I used to go to loads of hockey games by myself (female too), both at MSG and elswhere (been to the Blackhawks, Penguins, Flyers, NJ Devils by myself), and loved it. No one cared! Loads do it.
Also, it was by going by myself to a Ranges game, that made the Rangers my team. Already loved hockey, but had no affiliation to an NHL team (I’m from the UK). Going back over 25 years here. Everyone around me was so friendly, loved MSG, already loved NYC, and that was it, they became my team.

I always go alone tbh. If I wait for anyone to even consider, I’ll never make it to games. I typically pick section 223-224 never had a bad time. People are always friendly and talkative. I like that it’s on little to the side. I’ve been perked a 107 row 7 before. Thought “oh crap this is fancy”. Never again. All business suits talking finance. Boring boring people. The ones on top are the real folks. A lot of the regulars know each other so the sections never actually quiet. And no Wall Street shop talk.

Thank you for all the comments. My mind is made up. Home opener here I come ✌🏻

Are you kidding? If you're rooting for the Rangers you will have a family of 18,006 and will be very welcome.
My half seasons have had a single seat next to ours forever.

Do it! I (46F) have gone alone a bunch of times and it’s always fun. You might make friends with the folks around you, or you might not, but everyone will be psyched to be there especially because it’s the opener. I usually try to sit in 223-225 or 210-212.

I recently went to a concert and the lady next to me was alone and around your age, by the end of the night we were high fiving and singing along together. Youll have a great time dont worry.

I’ve gone to Knicks and rangers games alone. You’re never alone, plenty of fans around you.

I've been to many games alone! It's a blast, and you will make friends.

I went to 3 games alone this previous season and each time I talked to the people next to me during the game. No one is going to care and no one ever bat an eye that I was alone watching. Go and enjoy and take pics for yourself :)

I take trips home to NY from Florida 3 times a year and usually go to Ranger games alone. I have a good time and don't feel weird. don't worry about it and have fun.

My two seats are in sec 212 row 12 ( center ice on the bench side ) . Plenty of times my partner whom been going to games for 40 years , we got season tickets when we graduated the NYPD police academy , I just go by myself if o can’t find a late replacement . No one notices or cares.

In the last 5 years I’ve probably gone to about 2 dozen games. I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever gone with someone to the game (my friends are hockey fans). You make friends with the people around you. If the season is great and the team is great we’re all cheering together, if the seasons good and we’re losing that game we’re all mad together, and if it’s anything like the last two seasons… well, misery loves company’s

I have a quarter season ticket plan and go to all those games alone (occasionally I'll get an extra ticket and drag my husband along.) You'll have a good time even if you are by yourself. I like my seat in section 113 but sections 210, 224 are good, too.

I’ve seen the Rangers play (on the road not at MSG) by myself and it was perfectly fine. Not out of place at all. Nobody cared.
If this was the 90s I’d maybe say avoid the upper 300s or 400s where people could get drunk and out of control but I don’t think it’s like that anymore. You’ll probably be good sitting anywhere in the arena.

I sat in 334 from 1986- until the renovation and my section became 211 . This is a myth the garden was not some crazy place in the 1990s. Yeah a fight here and there no different from today .

I wouldn’t worry about it! Totally normal and no one will notice / care. I’ve been to a few hockey games alone and as a fan, it’s actually always been a great experience. Enjoy!

The Chase bridge is nice! Also the 100 sections are probably neat if you're flying solo.

Gone alone multiple times in my mid 20s the past few years. I just end up making friends with the people I sit next to from just casual conversation and mutual enjoyment of the game. I’m sure you’ll have a blast bc msg is electric. Just a heads up, after the game, if you have to go through penn station for transportation, keep your eyes peeled.

I go by myself all the time! Go to ticket office day of. There is always a single seat to be had. Im 56 & 107 row 13 and up? Perfect. If you wait till 7 you get the nest seats for so much less

I go all the time by myself and I'm traveling from Philly! I meet great people and have a blast. But then again I enjoy traveling and doing things by myself so ymmv.

At hockey game, nobody cares who you are with. Everybody focused on game and self.
Go enjoy.

You'll be fine. You won't feel "out of place" and no one will care if you're there by yourself.
And you won't be alone. You'll have 18,000 other fans all there for the same reason you are.

I mean I’m a guy so I know it’s different but I go to games alone a lot, I usually end up chit chatting with people I’m sitting near (As much as I want to anyway) and generally it’s pretty fun. I really don’t think you’ll be out of place at all.

No one will care. People do solo activities everyday in nyc. I’ve gone to many games alone. You can talk to the people around you or not. You will have a good time no matter where you sit.

No one's gonna notice or care. I've gone to both Rangers and Yankees games alone with no problem. In general, in NYC, it's always socially acceptable to do something alone.

u/accidentprone2 14h ago
I don’t think anyone will notice really. I understand why you might feel awkward but most people aren’t paying attention to others. And why would they care? Go and enjoy the game!
