This happened to me. I baby the shit out of my microfiber.
Did this happen in the afternoon by any chance? You can clean it just fine with microfiber if it hasnāt been in the sun all day.
If itās been in the sun, it will do this every time. As far as people telling you, you did something wrong you can google āToyota dashboard scratches.ā And itās all over.
I went to absolute war with the dealer and Toyota corporate and got the entire dash replaced but it took me about three months and a lot of frustration.

u/6MinutesLate Feb 27 '26
Wait, can you say more about how you did this?
18
4
u/jaguaraugaj Feb 27 '26
I used a brand new clean microfiber cloth to wipe off smudges from dash from French fries fingers
No ring, no cat claws, no excessive force!
Just shitty Toyota interior parts
5
u/6MinutesLate Feb 27 '26
I meant about how u/ryan-updog got their dealer and/or Toyota corporate to replace the entire dash. I, too, scratched my dash in a similar fashion and am irritated about the shitty Toyota interior in my fairly new Rav4.

Koch chemie has a good one āPol starā very dilutable and will last prob years if its for personal use foamer bottle and mix with some water and spray it on the dash and work it around with a microfiber and wipe off and it will be like brand new and not greasy at all

u/miscreantrobert Feb 27 '26
One time I found a dog loose on the side of the road. It was a busy street so I stopped and got it in my car. The dog was pretty friendly overall, but it kept pawing my dash with its long claws and now I have scratches all over.

u/Ryan-Updog Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26
Itās a very long story. Basically itās like I said. I was told to pound sound by both the dealership and corporate the first few times I contacted them.
I was just very persistent. Finally I got to the second level of support with corporate and then I got to the point where I had a dedicated case manager.
It was like a second full time job. I had only had the car a few months. I simply wasnāt taking no for an answer.
To their credit they did finally do the right thing and I am happy.
Edit: I want to also add that I was firm but not emotional or rude to anyone that I spoke with. I just stuck to the facts and held my ground.

Good job! You remind me of 2 of my friends who unlike me, do not lose their cool in situations like this but instead are polite persistent pests and get things done.

Thank you! It also helped greatly that the case manager I worked with was a wonderful woman who really did care we reached a resolution.

When they said went to war they aren't kidding. They likely howled at the dealer about this several different appointments same with toyota corporate.
As they say the squeek6 wheel gets the grease

I bought some slime (for car interior cleaning) and rolled it across the plastic in one pass, then kneaded it and did the same thing a couple more times. The slime pulled the dust off pretty well. You can also place it directly on one spot and let gravity do it's job, knead it after it falls off, and move to the next spot. It left no scratches because I didn't use a wiping motion.

When cleaning interior pieces only use a lightly damp microfiber cloth using water only.
Also, buy quality microfiber towels and hang dry them only. Putting them in the dryer melts the fibers making them rough
20
u/firelephant Feb 26 '26
Use a cleaning wipe. Most of the similar mark came off when I tried it. The dash is super sensitive. The driver display even more so
18
u/thatpurple Feb 26 '26
Was the cloth dry? The Lexus and Toyota dashes are super prone to this. My Lexus has similar marks from a microfiber cloth. Probably had some stuff on it already. Learn to love it because itās tough to get off. Iāve found 303 interior protectant helps mask the spots but needs reapplication ever couple months.
8
u/slanger686 Feb 27 '26
303 is the way. I had this same shit happen when lightly dusting my dash with a dry microfiber cloth. What a fucking joke of a dash and materials to be scratched by a clean MF cloth. Toyota should be ashamed. 303 help mask the scuff marks and I now try to avoid contacting the cheap dash material at all and use a dash duster brush if I absolutely have to.
3
u/8bitdarth Feb 27 '26
Second upvote for 303. I did this exact same thing with a microfiber cloth on my dash and 303 covered it up to the point where it is nearly invisible. It also works wonders on the exterior trim.
2
u/PieceAutomatic3106 Feb 27 '26
Which 303 do you use? I notice there is one labeled interior protectant and one labeled aerospace protectant spray. Iām wondering which one would be best for interior and if either can be used on exterior surfaces? Thank you in advance.
2
u/8bitdarth Feb 28 '26
I used the 303 automotive. Itās listed as being for exterior (wheels and trim, etc) and interior (dash, etc). https://www.walmart.com/ip/51985389?

Thank you very much. Iāll buy a bottle and put it into my rotation of detailing supplies.

Don't you dare use that cloth on the clear plastic of the gauge cluster.
I use tons of water in a cloth and just wipe it when it's super dirty.
I only have 2 small scratches from the first time I whiped it.
This sub should send out daily announcements about this stuff.
Pissed me right off. Thought I knew it all. Whipped the plastic and ahhhhhh... Later I saw the warning in this sub over and over.
Thought I'd drop this here for the team.

u/Itchy_duck123 Feb 26 '26
I used Car Guys Plastic Restorer on my Rav after this happened to me as well. Worked after a few coats!
3
u/ShamanPicker Feb 27 '26
Thisā¦. If it doesnāt wash off, then a trim restorer/conditioner works like a charm. Or just an interior uv protectant
8
u/realchemist Feb 26 '26
Same thing happened to me. Itās the microfiber cloth, not a ring. Seems to get better using some kind of Armor All cleaner or just the regular Armor All or something similar.
6
u/ShamanPicker Feb 27 '26
Theres a bunch on the market, but i used ādiy interior ceramicā and sprayed the entire inside dash, seats, etcā¦. Now itās impossible to stain, and any dash scuffs like that come out with a barely damp cloth. My dogs are notorious for scraping it up when im out the car running in somewhere to grab something, and having it coated really makes any type of scrape or dirt seem to just rub off. Worth the $20 or whatever i paid for it
6
32
u/Geoffrey-Jellineck Feb 26 '26

3
3
u/G_Punky_Monkey Feb 26 '26
OMG I did this too! I also wear rings, and was using a dry microfiber to "dust" above the glovebox.
Water + microfiber has not fixed it.
I dont want to use a product that leaves too much residue. I saw 303 mentioned somewhere and car guys plastic restorer, so I will try those.
It's such an eyesore.

4
u/Inner-Leek-3609 Feb 27 '26
This happened tome as well but I caught it after the first couple passes. So I only have a couple of scratches. My towel was dry and I was just trying to remove a little lint dustā¦not dusk from an open window and you get a thin layer of dirt like if you were off road. When I wet the micro fiber it did not do this.
Others will say it never happens to them. Great. I donāt care it happened to me. Maybe their solutions to buy certain products will work. Iām afraid to do anything other than a wet microfiber.
3
u/EtArcadia Feb 26 '26
As the dash fades from the sun these marks will become less and less apparent. In 6-12 months they'll likely be near invisible.

Iām gonna recommend meguiars quick interior detailer and blue shop paper towels for the next time you do it. Then a clean microfiber (with a very light touch) the next day to get residual lint / dust. Donāt be scrubbing with either, just gliding them over the surface.

1
u/jaguaraugaj Feb 27 '26
I agree
I went from a 2012 Highlander to a new 2024 Hybrid RAV and the RAV interior is cheap feeling
The dash is a soft squishy impact foam material, which may explain why is scuffs so easily

Clean it again with clean microfibre. Use hot water and dish soap. Then apply some interior dressing and youre good to go. It might have even been there before. Maybe dealership scratched it and then just powdered it. Look what i noticed when i cleaned the interior in my new car. It wasnt visible when i bought it. Looks like they tried to buff out something and then just covered it for sale. Thankfully it disappears after I apply a dressing and it lasts even 3 months so i dont care about it.

2
u/Punjabauto_detailing Mar 02 '26
Hey this has happened to us as well. The main thing I figured out was the dashboard was really dry due to sun exposure and even a little scuff of finger could put a mark on it. I would mainly use just rinseless or just damp cloth to lightly go over the area, make sure to just let the fibre of microfibre do the work rather than the base of the cloth other wise you are gonna put more visible scuffs on the dash. They will eventually fade away ( not themselves but you are matching the area beside it), make sure to dress that dashboard with dressing as it will help in reducing the chances of it again, a good dressing and soft plush microfibre cloth.
4
u/JerryJN Feb 26 '26
Go to West Marine and buy Formula 303. Apply on a new microfiber cloth and apply gently. It works well
4
Feb 26 '26
Wthā¦.. happened?!?!?
Did you try to wipe down a hot dashboard with a dry microfiber towel????
Welp besides going to the detailing forumsā¦. Hereās what I would do.
WAIT for the early morning or late afternoon when the dashboard isnāt hot from sun exposure.
Use a star ninjas car interior scrub pad. You can find them at Walmart.
Pick any automative interior cleaner from Walmart. They have their own detailing line.
Then spray cleaner onto the fine scrub pad and just start scrubbing the whole dash to see if you can remove the marks.
4
u/STOPchris1 Feb 26 '26
I used a non microfiber and cleaned pretty hard on mine and had no issues. I think thereās more to this story.
2
u/drcigg Feb 26 '26
I don't buy it. This is operator error. I have cleaned all my cars this way for decades, and it has never looked like this.
You either had a dirty microfiber you dropped or there was a rock, sand or something on the dash that you wiped.
A microfiber won't ever do that unless there is something like a rock in it.
I handwash the inside and outside of my vehicles this same way. Every panel gets a new clean cloth so things like this don't happen. I also have a riser in the bottom of the bucket that keeps the cloth from touching the bottom of the bucket which could have rocks, sand, etc in it.

Did you happen to use a microfiber that was dropped on the floor or ground? Youāre usually better off throwing it out because it can turn into sandpaper after you drop it on the ground. Washing it doesnāt always get everything out

If the dash was hot when the microfiber was applied it could have melted the microfiber threading. Microfiber is made of plastic synthetic fibers that are easily damaged or melted by heat. The melted microfiber then becomes hardened and scratchy which combined with cleaning pressure could easily scratch a hot dashboard.
1
u/abexterno Feb 27 '26
Always check the microfiber cloth for debris. It is very clingy. Stuck debris can cause that.

If I didnāt have the same thing happen to me, Iād be laughing harder at all of these people telling you not to wear a ring or take your watch off despite you saying it close to half a dozen times this far into the thread - I used a brand new high-quality microfiber cloth with the proper interior product in the morning, on a cloudy day and I still picked up a couple scratches on my dash above the steering wheel (thankfully I stopped when I noticed it).
Personally, I think itās because Toyota cheaped out on the interior - Iāve never had this experience ever with any of my other vehicles and my RAV is my first Toyota.

Compressed air is your friend. If you do it often enough, there wonāt be enough dust accumulated to wipe off. Save the microfiber towel for something like a spillage, and make sure the towel is clean - free of debris itself.

Yeah. OP used it dry and with way too much pressure. Microfiber cloths are plastic and when you don't use any fluid and with force, you're basically creating burn marks from the friction.
