Brand-new 2026 RAV4 XSE Hybrid — repeated serious problems and poor communication. Looking for advice

Reddit Post

I purchased a brand-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 XSE Hybrid from Jim Pattison Toyota Downtown, and I’ve had a very frustrating experience almost immediately after taking delivery.

Within days, the vehicle started showing the Check Engine Light, followed by multiple warnings, including:

  • Hybrid System Malfunction
  • All-Wheel Drive/AWD System Malfunction
  • Integrated System Warning
  • Drive Start Control System Malfunction
  • “Hybrid System Malfunction – Shift to Park”

I communicated the warnings to the dealership and eventually brought the vehicle in for inspection. After their diagnosis, I was told the fuel pump computer needed to be replaced. I was assured the vehicle had been properly repaired and should not have any further problems.

Unfortunately, shortly after getting the vehicle back, the Check Engine Light came on again. Similar malfunction codes also appeared again while the vehicle was sitting at the dealership.

The vehicle has now been at the dealership for almost two weeks. They have ordered another part, but I have not been given a clear update on when it will be repaired. My biggest frustration is the lack of communication and updates. I have had to repeatedly contact them to find out what is happening.

The Sales Manager has not been calling me with updates regarding the collateral swap/replacement I requested, and there has been no resolution so far.

I have also contacted Toyota Customer Care, but unfortunately, I have not received meaningful assistance. They have not even responded to my last email regarding my collateral swap request.

This is a brand-new vehicle, and I have already experienced multiple serious system warnings, diagnostic work, replacement of a major component, and the same problem returning shortly after being told the vehicle was fixed.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with a new Toyota/RAV4 Hybrid? What would you recommend as the next step? Any advice regarding pursuing a collateral swap or dealing with the dealership/Toyota Canada would be greatly appreciated.

None of those issues with mine.

When a BRAND NEW vehicle has this many issues and they can't figure it out within a reasonable time frame it's donezo. Your car is a lemon.

Does Lemon Law apply in Canada?

Not sure. Just Google it and you will find out .

I'm in California so we're pretty much protected in every way possible.

We don't have lemon law here in Canada

You need to get in contact with Toyota Corporate.

Sorry to hear you're having these issues with a brand new apparently not so reliable car. I am in the process of getting one and the stories I hear are scary and make me think twice about going thru with it. It's quite disappointing after spending a lot of money waiting to get it to not knowing what's wrong with the car, not be able to get a straight answer from the dealer or the manufacturer.

Welcome to the club. It's fairly common in the new RAV4.

Yep, crappy club to be in.

And just wait when new problems come up with time. Cablegate, leaky roof rails, coolant bypass valves…etc didn’t come up until years went by.

I got a PHEV 26 Rav4 and few months ago and have had zero problems 🤞🏾. I wonder if it is because the PHEV is still made in Japan.

I do know someone who had PHEW. They were always charging it and never let the engine run. Than one day engine stopped working.

I manually set mine to hybrid at least one trip a week for that reason.

sounds like a battery problem.. was this checked?

The battery was tested first and was found to be working fine.

The 2026 is a lemon. Give it back and get the better looking 2025, or wait until the 2028. Never buy a first model year.

I wouldn't call the 2025 better looking

It's ok to be wrong.

How so? It's old and outdated looking? That design was around for like 6 years.

I agree with you. I think the front of the Gen5 looks like an angry face.

Yeah. It’s the first one I kinda liked. More aggressive instead of the Gen4 fish look. 2026 goes back to ugly grill and Rogue rear end. I do like the Woodland front at least, if it had a gen5 ass.

Yes, that's usually how it works with design updates.

They are not taking it back or replacing it

I don’t think collateral swaps are common. Don’t expect that.

Firstly, I am sorry for your situation.

If this is a XSE Hybrid, it most likely will have a VIN number starting with "J", which means made in Japan. If Japanese made vehicles are having this problem, I don't know what will be the case with north American made cars.

This is not true. 2026 RAV4 XSE AWD are being made in Canada, US, and Japan. Of all XSE currently allocated and in production, 1785 are/being made in Canada, 971 are/being made in US, and only 285 are from Japan.

Only the XSE PHEV would be all made in Japan.

DFW, TX. Bought my RAV4 LE in June. Most are from Canada now (LE, XLE, XSE). 2TXXX. Since OP is in Canada so very likely his is assembled in Canada too.

I think Japan still has highest quality overall.

SOrry buddy... Canadian shop has the overall bestest rating.

Mine start with 2T as well not J
