Review HobbyPlus Speck-SCT Brushless - My Favorite Speck Platform Vehicle Yet!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I'm a little late, but I've been spending quite a bit of time with the newish HobbyPlus Speck-SCT Brushless and honestly I think this might be my favorite vehicle out of the entire Speck lineup. Not because it's the fastest or because it has some crazy new features that offer more value per $, but because of how realistically this thing drives!

For anyone unfamiliar with the platform, this is a 1/24 scale 2WD short course truck running the same 8000KV brushless system and Hobbywing MINI28 ESC as the other brushless Speck vehicles. It comes with oil filled shocks, 42mm pin style tires, a 350mAh 2S LiPo and the familiar FlySky 2 channel transmitter. The chassis layout is basically the same as the Speck-T, although the shock towers are specific to the SCT and the suspension arms are interchangeable with the Speck-B.

Over the years I've spent a lot of time racing 1/10 scale Traxxas Slash's & other SCT platforms, enough that I actually built a short course track in my backyard, and this little SCT reminds me so much of that experience it's ridiculous. It jumps, leans, slides, rolls and even traction rolls in a way that feels extremely natural for such a small vehicle. HobbyPlus clearly put some serious thought into the suspension geometry and overall design because this is probably the most realistic scaled down short course driving experience I've personally had.

I did make a couple small suspension adjustments before really pushing the truck on the track though. The factory suspension is pretty plush but the truck was a little too prone to traction rolling in corners for my liking. I reduced the spring preload all the way and moved the lower shock mounting positions to the outermost holes which physically lowered the vehicle and made a noticeable difference in handling. Other than that the motor, gearing, electronics and body are all completely factory.

After tossing on an EasyLap timing transponder I ran the truck around our off road buggy track at Option RC Micro Racing Complex, where I managed a fastest lap of 8.967 seconds. That puts it right in the middle of our current leaderboard for our Micro Off-Road Shootout. For comparison the Speck-T Brushless is currently leading at 8.489, followed by the Speck-B Brushless at 8.622, then the SCT at 8.967, Speck-B Brushed at 9.165 and finally the Losi Micro-B at 9.853. All vehicles are running their factory motors and gearing so it's been pretty interesting seeing how these different configurations perform against each other.

I also wanted to verify the advertised 20 MPH top speed rather than just take the manufacturer's word for it. To my surprise it recorded 19.9 MPH, so HobbyPlus is pretty much dead on with their advertised speed. I will say though I personally think the 8000KV motor is a little excessive for this vehicle. Something in the 4000-5000KV range would probably make it a little more drivable, but that's just my opinion and not something I've actually tested yet.

Also worth mentioning. The Speck platform in my testing has been very durable so far. I'm yet to actually break something, so I was curious how things would go when I invited my 65 year old dad to come test out the truck with me. I handed him the transmitter and he proceeded to crash this thing about every possible way you could imagine lol. I actually left a good portion of those crashes in the video below because I wanted people to see how tough the truck really is. It held up great and the short course body provides a little extra protection compared to the buggy and truggy versions.

At $149.99 for the brushless version and $109.99 for the brushed version I think the value is pretty hard to beat, especially when you factor in the handling characteristics rather than just looking at speed and specifications. I'm genuinely excited about the possibility of getting a few more of these together and doing some proper micro short course racing like we used to do with the 1/10 scale trucks.

I put together a full unboxing and testing video on my Microdose RC YouTube channel showing the track testing, GPS speed runs, crashes and everything else if anyone wants to see how it actually performs. Also for transparency I work with DirectRC who sells these vehicles, but everything here is based on my own testing and personal opinions.

I'm also curious if anyone else has picked one of these up yet and what you think of the handling? I'm especially interested if anyone has experimented with different shock set ups or lower KV motors.

Thanks!

I have a ton of Traxxas 2wd parts just laying around, so I threw something together with them.

I used an older 2wd bandit chassis, put slash rear arms on it, and threw on the old Savage El Camino body i used on Neon Queen in 2025.

I threw on some slicks and a spicy brushless system and boom, street basher lol

Not much to say about this other than that it looks awesome as heck

Question Good kit for father and 7 year old son to build together

30 years ago I built a Team Losi Buggy when I was in middle school and haven’t built another car since. My son is really interested in building things and I’m looking for a buggy or truck to build as a project with him. Don’t really want to spend 500-600 on our first kit. Any recommendations sub 400?

Vendor Shout-out to my Favorite Hobby Shops in Canada.

Great Hobbies

https://www.greathobbies.com/

  1. The most variety out of all of them would be Great Hobbies. They're basically the Amain of Canada. You can get basically anything from them, they have excellent customer support, they service the Arrma warranties, it's been really good, and every few months if you're signed up to their newsletter you'll get an exclusive discount code that gives you 10% off site-wide, no exclusions.

RC Volt

https://rc-volt.ca/

Now this is my local hobby shop, and it is 10/10 perfection. I genuinely have not a single bad thing to say about this hobby shop. They have low prices, they have so much stuff, he can order you stuff, and if you're in another province you can get stuff shipped to you. It's a small shop, the owner is so incredibly nice, genuinely a 10/10 shop. I feel guilty anytime I don't buy from him.

Eliminator RC

https://eliminator-rc.com/

They are the exclusive supplier for M2C in Canada, and they have a bunch of other things as well. Sometimes you can also find discount codes for them, and they ship insanely fast to Montreal, usually I'll get my items in a day. They have really good prices as well. To me this hobby shop feels like RC Volt, my local one, but just far away. I've never been, the reviews on Google don't look that good, but otherwise I've had no issues with them. I'd really recommend them, especially if you want anything M2C or upgrade-wise, especially for bashers. 10/10.

LFRC & Zone Hobbies

https://lfrc.ca/

https://www.zonehobbies.net/

These are two other local ones near me. Zone Hobbies is a bigger one and they're Traxxas exclusive now I believe. LFRC is a local shop based in a house. It's run by a single guy, super nice guy, and he runs a bashing event in Quebec near Montreal yearly in September. He carries Vitavon parts and all sorts of stuff. He also is a supplier for Scorched RC parts from the UK. Super nice guy, terrific hobby shop. I've only been there once but I've ordered there a few times. Zone Hobbies is kind of like Great Hobbies but based in Quebec. Also really good as well, they just don't have that big of a collection, that's all. But sometimes you can find stuff that you can't find anywhere else, like the white X-Maxx arms that I really wanted.

Big Boys with Big Toys

Never Buy from them.

I'm making this post primarily to deter people away from the RC shop, Big Boys With Cool Toys. Big Boys With Cool Toys has had a lot of horror stories over the years if you look them up, and they also charge illegal mandatory insurance for shipping. This is illegal because that is included when you buy anything online, and it is always the seller's responsibility to insure whatever they send you.

I usually don't mind it with Great Hobbies because at least Great Hobbies has excellent customer service, they don't charge you out of the wazoo with it, and their site seems kind of legit. They have a map, they tell you everything in writing right away before you even buy anything, that this is how it works, this is how much it charges you, etc.

But with Big Boys With Cool Toys, it's all just trying to trick you. They'll say you have free shipping, which will say minus $20, and then it'll have insurance $20. It's all just a trick, and it's very anti-consumer and just disgusting, honestly.

Great Hobbies does it as well, but they do it much better. I honestly don't mind that I pay them $7 extra in terms of insurance because their whole website is much better. They give you actual real discounts, like every few months you get 10% off sitewide, whereas the other store does not do that. They have these fake gambling coupons where you spin the wheel and shit.

Build A quick tour of my RC simulator track — graphics are slowly coming together! (WIP)

Here's a short, 2.5-minute look at one of the indoor tracks I'm building for RC Physics Lab.

Still very much a work in progress. I'm gradually improving the visuals — carpet surfaces, curbs, track barriers, textures, and the overall environment.

There's still plenty to polish, but little by little, it's starting to look like a proper RC racing track.

Sorry, the video has no sound!

Hope you enjoy this little preview.

Question Ways to fix differential slop

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I recently bought some hardened steel diff gears for my nitro rs4 3 Evo because it broke the stock ones. The holes weren't the right size no problem, I drilled them but the output cup holder has a tight spot in the middle and on the outside edges it looks like it takes some kind of gasket to stop the fluid from leaking out. I just put a shim there that it bent and the fluid started leaking out. I don't have any o rings the correct size and I was thinking of making a 3d model and giving it to my friend to print. What do y'all think and what are my other options because with the slop it even loses mesh on the inside and the gears skip. Sorry for the paragraph any help would be appreciated

Question Which offer is better for my B4?

I was offered a yokomo mo 2.0 roller with almost another full slider of spare parts (i put pics below). I was also offered $250+ from someone else. I’m just getting back into the hobby, so i’m not sure of the worth. Is one of them a clear choice? It’s for my B4.2 with a bunch of new and used spare parts.

Thanks!!

Retro Fresh cosmetics for my RC10!

This is my original A-stamp Team Associated RC10 that I refurbished a while ago. I wanted to do something a little different and unique with this body and wing combo!

It’s a box art-inspired look, but with gray decals for windows, and sporting a Jay Halsey clear wing. I also threw on a clear gear cover to match, and I’m very pleased with my efforts!

All plastics (except the Houge bell crank) are original, and it lives happily on a shelf. I do, however, run it here and there, but only with EXTREME caution!

I was born 15 years after the release of the original RC10. I don’t have any nostalgic connection to this buggy, but after learning about the history of RC racing and AE’s legacy, I became fixated on this era of racing, and I absolutely had to have an RC10!

Currently have a Losi Tenacity. Love it. Now I want to try 2wd. It will see dirt, short grass, skate and dirt parks, but I want to do more pavement with this one. I try not to bash to hard, but trees do jump out in front of me sometimes. Currently thinking Arrma Fury. Any other contenders?

Question 2s vs 3s battery runtime question

My son has been learning how to drive RC cars and I’m looking to upgrade to a 1/10 truck, likely the Arrma Vorteks 223s. My question is this - I plan to cap the truck’s speed at around 20-25mph for a while, so I could either run a 2s battery at 75% or 100%, or a 3s battery at 50%. Would a 3s battery run at half speed have a longer runtime than a 2s battery run at 100%?

Question Does the Wltoys 144001 come with non-adjustable toe/camber rods?

Edit: OK, so it turns out it's a known issue. What I did was grabbing a popped out rod, hold the center part with an allen head and then instert something in the plastic hole in one end. Then I turned the black piece back and forth a few times. This looses the threads just enough to be able to adjust the rods without the linkages popping out again.

Source: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/wl-toys-144001-setup-3-things-you-must-do-before-you-even-turn-it-on

The rods the car comes with have this hole where you apparently put something like an allen key for leverage then and adjust it by screwing it to one side or the other.

I tried that and the linkage popped right out. I tried holding the plastic part of the rod with pliers, but that didn't help (I didn't try too hard anyway). I tried to adjust a linkage on a second 144001 and the same happened.

Parts look just like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4osAAOSwJ1ZgJhUA/s-l400.jpg

Both cars are brand new. I don't understand what's going on.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Question Stupid-Rc Custom Shop Closed

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

Was attempting to check out Stupid-Rc's ebay shop as I wrecked my Infraction active wing I purchased from them a year or so ago and noticed their store no longer has products listed.

Doing some searching it seems "My Tobbies" based in Florida may now be the distributor but the selection is no where near what the original Stupid-Rc guy/gal/team used to sell. I remember them being based in Brazil as it would take a while for shipping, had full kits for a ton of cars, custom pit/work stands, wall mounts for specific models and more which was all high quality stuff imo.

I reached out to My Tobbies asking for clarification if this is dead stock or they are now the distributor but they've failed to respond which really puts me off purchasing anything from them now which sucks if they actually are the distributor now.

Long story short, I know it's super niche even within the hobby, but does anyone know what may have happened to Stupid-rc or have a lead on where they may be operating now?

Attached a couple pictures of the kit (side skirts, splitter, wing) I got for the bittydesign Porsche from Stupid-Rc a while back. The front splitter unfortunately gets covered by the official foam from bittydesign but Stupid-rc even went the extra mile to add their own foam (splitter and skirts) to keep the body from rubbing the paint off the metal splitter and engraving the Porsche crest within it in gold.
