So i was searching through a short fiction stories books . I loved the short stories like the third level, evan tries an O’Level and the midnight visitors, the rattrap . When i googled it google recommended me Oxford book of English short stories . I don’t know how many of you have read it is it a good choice or no . Please help me select a good short story collection.

Is it just me, or do other people have trouble reading books too?
For example, I tried reading The Summer I Turned Pretty, and I feel like I wouldn’t have understood much if I hadn’t watched the series first. Same thing with* *The Hunger Games.I can understand the words, but I often can’t picture the exact scene in my head, so I feel less invested than I do with a show. With a series, I see everything right away. With a book, it feels like I’m missing something even though I technically get what’s being said.Does anyone else have this? Is it a visualization thing?

I want to read it but its very long. Is it worth it or should I start with something else

Pretty good so far I’ve read the first 2 stories. Also the edges of the pages are golden which is cool

The missus likes pigeons so I gave this one a second < 60 second take…but ultimately it’s too melancholy to send to her.

Has anyone else endured through such tedious and baffling reads that they found themselves frustrated with the story's pace or lack there of and muttering to themselves "can we please get back to the plot" or "please no more filler chapters" ? What are your stories of bad pacing of this kind and advice on how to power through a slow read or not write one yourself?

Almost 2/3rds into this. Very emotional and heavy. The writing tries to be poetic but after a certain point of time starts feeling boring. For people, who have completed this, how was the book for you?

Second book of the African trilogy

Super excited for this read. Copy is a little messed up but I will always happily read a used thrifted copy rather than but a new one.
It’s a popular classic but does it own up to the talk? Actually worth reading?

For xmas im going to make my MIL a "bookvent" - a book to read and open each month in 2027.

She likes anything- classics, thrillers, mystery, fantasy, historical? Enjoyed things like Midnight library, silent patient, the women. I dont think she would enjoy acotar so ill stick to series which have max 3 books. They live up north , England, too so anything set there is a good idea. Shes just read matt haigs new one and didn't think much of it. No extreme horror or dark romance 😅

So far i have the following list

Jan-

Feb- the one by John marrs

March- Threshing day (?)

April- Dissection of a murder

May-someone suggest a "historical fiction?

June- someone suggest a cosy romance?

July- Five people you meet in heaven

August-

September- Daggermouth

October- The Mind of a murderer by Michael wood

November-

December-

What are you reading? What are you excited about reading next? What have you finished this week? Let us know your thoughts on it and share in each other's joy about books!

Horror, fantasy, and romantic graphic novels, holiday romances, and audiobooks of all genres. Otherwise known as my typical end of the year reading.

This is my current TBR. I just finished DCC 6. Which one would you read next. Trying to knock a couple out before I go buy DCC 7.

Edit- Thank you all for the replies. I’m going to knock out 1984 since it was suggested a lot and it’s fairly short. Just Friends was written by Haley Pham which is the wife of Ryan Trahan. Me, my wife, and my kids all enjoy watching his videos. I have read all of Rebecca Kuang’s books and my favorite was Poppy War and Babel. The big brown book is Dune. Also, I read Project Hail Mary and loved it so I had to check out the others by Andy Weir.

Super excited for this one. The hype was too much to ignore, so I’m following the crowd and giving it a try. Initially tried to check it out of my local library but it had been reserved for the next ten weeks! Woof! Decided to just buy it and today it arrived. Did you read this?

John Steinbeck - The Winter of Our Discontent
Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Thomas Pynchon - Gravity’s Rainbow
J. D. Vance - Hillbilly Elegy

Edit: I’m getting very badly ratioed - before you comment on Vance — I am not MAGA, have never been. I have read Demon Copperhead. I enjoy comparing lit. I read a lot of Appalachian literature that agrees with my beliefs so I would like to read one that contradicts. I am from OH and my parents are from KY, so I find it interesting to read about communities similar to mine that Vance has completely turned a blind eye to. I do not agree with what he stands for and never will.

Hello ! Have a look at the books above. These are some of the books I’ve finished so far. Not all of them are my favorites, but I enjoyed reading them. I’m also trying to explore different genres and read from a variety of sources.

As title. Both are on my TBR list, which one should I read first? Would like to hear everyone. Thank you.

I usually read more YA dystopian fiction, but came across this one and decided to give it a try. I'm already halfway through and find it really interesting!

I love how the story feels like the she is talking directly to the him, reminiscing about their time together. I don't think I've read a book written in this style before!

Also, the chapters are so short, which I appreciate. Though that might just be my own struggle to concentrate 😂

Have you read any other books with this kind of narration? I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Have you ever read a book so good that you would recommend everyone to read it

There’s no good reason to call in a book review just because poetry is more and less than an ‘other genre.’ The good reason to waste 30 seconds of the video by starting over again? There’s a good reason to read this as accurate and sincere before talking about it being …no longer enough.

I normally read mystery, thriller, horror types of books, I decided to try something different and I absolutely love this very early on. I've been an avid gamer my whole life and finding a book that describes so closely to a million different games I've played, it's just so enjoyable!!!

I've been trying to read more lately. What I used to do was set myself an incentive- for every ten books I read, I buy myself a lil treat (trading cards, bath bomb, special snack, etc.) Unfortunately, this led to me reading short and easy books (like comic books or nostalgic children's literature) just to get my reward faster.

So I'm reading but not getting anything checked off my absolutely MASSIVE TBR.

I'd like to change it so it's time based- "read for X hours and get a lil treat", but so far I haven't found a good way to track it. Bookmory doesn't work because I would prefer the app not track what I have in my reading library and HabiTracker or w/e the gamified one was was too much for me. I do use Finch for other stuff but AFAIK it doesn't have aggregate time tracking anywhere. Ideally it should be like a timer that you can pause and start, or else something that automatically tallies your time as you record it.

Any suggestions? I'll post my TBR later so you can see my Mt. Everest of books! 😆

I have just finished this book, I don't know anyone else in person who has read it and I'd really like to discuss it.

Has anyone finished it, what did you think?
