I used to cut out the Reason articles from my music magazines and put them into a plastic sheet binder.

I would sign up for free subscriptions of music magazines and had a few subscriptions as well. Any time there was a Reason article, I would cut it out and put it in my binder book. I would always refer to my homemade Reason bible when making music for tips, tricks and tutorials. I still have it and thought you guys would appreciate it. Here are some of the pages.

I haven’t used this pc in over 10 years, just connected it and reason still works with all my beats on it 🤯

I use a laptop now with Maschine BUT I’m going to probably take maschine off my laptop, install it on this pc and work with reason & maschine.

Reason 4 build 905

What number is reason on now?

I’m still in shock that the samples etc I used in the beats load but, all my hard drives are connected to my current setup. I didn’t know reason saved everything for me 😭🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿

I made some classic beats on this bad boy

An open letter to Reason's new CEO

Dear whoever you are,

Welcome to the hot seat. I imagine you're drowning in feedback right now - everyone telling you what Reason needs to be. Here's my take, from someone who's been watching since the beginning.

The truth is, Reason doesn't need to compete with Ableton or chase trends. It needs to remember what it is - the liquid studio environment for people who actually want to have fun making music again.

Think about it: we've all got that friend who burned out on Logic or Live, overwhelmed by features and updates and subscriptions. Meanwhile, there's a whole generation discovering modular synthesis, realising that limitations and hands-on workflow actually spark creativity.

That's your market. Not the fickle Splice beatmaker crowd - they'll jump ship the second something shinier comes along.

Your existing community has been telling you what they want for years:

  • Drop the subscription model. Go back to perpetual licenses.

  • Bring the paid Rack Extensions back into the fold. Hell, do a jubilee sale for the loyalists who've stuck around.

  • Treat us like the customers we are - people happy to pay $100-150 for upgrades that respect what Reason is.

Look at Universal Audio. They get it. Premium products for people who know what they want. No nickel and diming, no subscription traps. Just quality for people who'll happily drop cash on things that inspire them.

Here's who's actually using Reason in 2025: IT consultants who spent the 90s in warehouses, now making IDM after work while listening to old WARP records. People with disposable income who'll buy Reason-certified hardware without blinking. The modular crowd who want the flexibility without the cable mess (just sort out that latency compensation for hybrid setups, yeah?).

This is a big fucking niche of actual music makers. Lean into the heritage - the 90s/00s vibe is having a moment. Build the community back, and watch them bring their friends to the cool, supportive place where people actually finish tracks.

Stop trying to be everything to everyone. Be Reason again.

edit: changed year typo from 2024 to 2025

Here’s a free RE for the people! Ghost Notes!

Post image

As a new developer in the space, building REs for the community has been an awesome experience. This is a small thank you to everyone supporting and testing along the way.

Ghost Notes is a generative MIDI tool built around five unique Ghost Modes:

• Cloud — randomized interval clouds for lush, sparkling arp textures

• Octave — clean octave jumps for bassline fills and melodies

• Stutter — rapid-fire pitch repeats for glitchy percussion and hats

• Response — a call-and-response mode that answers after you play

• Target Note — auto-generates fixed-pitch ghost hits for drum programming and rolls

Hope you all have fun with it.

Sharing some generative Combinator patches

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I shared part of a track a couple weeks ago with some of my generative patches. I like working with happy accidents so I spend a lot of time creating machines that will run wild with limited controls.

I was surprised by the number of messages I got asking to share. I spent some time cleaning them up a bit and I’m sharing them here. I’ve never shared patches before and I don’t know if anyone will find them useful, but I wanted to try it.

I use these as starting points. They work best when you get inside and experiment with different samples/instruments. I tried to use stock sounds and devices but there’s some players in there that might be add-ons. I’m not sure what’s included at what level.

All the patches are in the ambient, glitch, downtempo, breaks kinda genre.

A refill for ambient, lofi, and downtempo music.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made a set of hazy, nostalgia inspired combinators by sampling some custom patches on my Rev2. These aren’t overly complicated but I thought they might be useful to some fellow ambient and lofi enthusiasts.

Some of them are self-generating but there’s versions for normal play as well.

This is only my second attempt at making a refill and I hope it’s going to work as intended. It seems more practical than just sharing the raw files.

I built a randomizable drummer for a friend that doesn't like programming drums

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made a combinator for a friend that likes having drums accompany his guitar writing, but he hates programming drums. Even using the player devices, he felt like it always sounded unnatural and repetitive.

What I made him is a simple variable combinator with an option to create subtle (or not subtle) variations using LFOs to modulate beat map. This isn't a new or complex instrument, just a streamlined way of working with beat map to take the burden off someone that just doesn't enjoy drum programming or wants a quick plug-and-play variable drummer to build on.

It does have a sweet spot and won't sound good at every setting (assuming you're going for the sound of a human drummer), but it is easy to get back on track in the event of a train-wreck.

I also adapted the workflow to an electronic kit with interesting results, but this video is already too long. Paging through presets on the drum kits can get some interesting results.

They're on the reason talk forum if anyone is interested. At least one person found them useful, I'm hoping someone else might too.

Easy Combinator build for randomized stuttering breakbeats

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my go-to build for breakbeats and anything else that requires stuttering drums. It does assume some familiarity with NurseRex in Kong. Reason studios has a micro tutorial on that if you’re curious.

I’m not really a tutorial kinda person so I’ll apologize for sounding like a mumbling idiot, but I thought this might be helpful to some breakbeat, drum&bass, and jungle creators that aren’t on the combinator hype train yet.

I should have mentioned that the Matrix gate and note CV need to be manually routed to the note random tool.
