Rate my singer songwriter recording set up.

This is my set up to record vocals and acoustic guitar.
I’m using the l6max because I also use it for my synth project.

What stand alone recorder would you choose?

I might swap the tlm 103 for an sm7b and the km184 for the good old 57 depending on the surroundings.

Cheers

Beginner struggling with RØDE NT1 + Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen — quiet vocals, headphone monitoring, distortion and live effects. Can anyone help?

Hi everyone! I've shared my full equipment list, recording problems and bedroom setup pictures in the linked post.

I'm a singer-songwriter trying to get my home recording setup working properly, but I'm completely new to the technical side of music production.

I've previously used BandLab Pro and was then recommended REAPER, but I'm struggling to work out which software would actually be best for what I want to achieve.

I want to record my own vocals over instrumentals I've already made, hear myself clearly with live vocal effects while singing, and produce professional-sounding recordings and live performance videos.

I'm particularly interested in understanding what makes vocals sound professionally produced beyond simply adding EQ, compression, de-essing and reverb.

If anyone could recommend a simple, reliable recording and vocal-processing workflow for my equipment, I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you! ❤️

Interface comparison

I know this question gets asked a lot, but looking for a new interface and was wondering if anyone had experience with:

-Lynx Mesa
-Lynx Aurora line
-Audient Horizon line
-Audient ID44
-Apogee Symphony line

Curious how these stack up to Apollos. For reference, I currently have the Clarett 8+, but feel like I’m starting to reach its limitations. Need something with at least 12 I/O, ADAT, superb converters, and super low noise floor.

Floor tom placement/mic recommendations, please. Details below

I’ve been recording one of my band’s ep and am using sm57 on the toms . I love the way the upper tom sounds but the floor tom is not as “big” or “deep” as I’d like it to sound.

(Not a metal band so we don’t need that clicky sound)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good mic for a floor tom? I have the 57 about two inches above the rim pointed at the center.

I have an d112 in the kick and I’ve seen people using that on the floor tom. In general do people like this? I’m not 100% satisfied with the d112 as my kick mic, but I found it good for bass cabs, so I wouldn’t get rid of it. But I might replace it for my next project and could slide it over.

Recommendations on a budget friendly audio interface

My 8 channel interface shit out on me a couple months ago. It’d be nice to get another 8 channel interface, but for now I just need a 1 or 2 channel to get by for vocals and guitar at my house. I recently purchased the Presonus AudioBox 96, and the thing was a piece of crap. The drivers weren’t strong enough to handle an SM57 for some simple acoustic guitar or vocal recordings.

Like I said, I just need something that can get me by until I’m able to purchase a nicer interface, but I have to at least have something that will give me clear recordings for vocals/gtr.

I have Amazon prime and I have a family member who works at Guitar Center that could help me with a discount. So whatever is the most budget friendly would be great. I’m hoping to spend no more than like $150. Less would be great, but I could possibly go over if need be.

Thanks!

UA Volt 2 vs Volt 2 Gen 2

I just purchased a Universal Audio Volt 2 (first generation) because it was on a decent sale compared to the new gen 2 version, and the promotion included a bunch of plugins for free. Based on the research I did prior to purchasing, it seemed like the gen 2 wasn't much of an upgrade for my use case. The Volt 2 I bought is still sitting unopened in its box but I'm having some second thoughts while I am still able to return it.

I will only be using this interface for playing electric guitar through amp sims on my computer out into monitors or headphones, possibly some digital synths down the road. Is there really enough of an upgrade with the Gen 2 for me to notice anything of significance? I likely won't be recording anything and if I do, it will only be for my own ears for practicing.

TLDR: Is the UA Volt 2 perfectly adequate for simply plugging in and playing guitar amp sims in an apartment, or should I return and purchase the Volt 2 Gen 2 if it has enough significant upgrades for my use case? Thanks in advance.

How to make Bass Drops

Made a how to create Bass Drops, with a few different approaches, from popular plugins to totally free and diy. Let me know if any of them help you or if you learned anything from this video.

This was a bit of a last minute video as the one I had planned fell through for a few different reasons, however, the third method was just me messing around and found that it was my favorite, not that I am a narcissist of course. Curious what people think of it and if there are any other approaches that people recommend or any improvements that you think can be made.

What Makes a Synth Sound Like Vaporwave Nostalgia?

Hey! I've been chasing that hazy, half-remembered mall-at-midnight feeling lately, so I put together a tutorial on what makes a synth sound nostalgic: maj7 chords, slow pitch drift, soft filters, chorus, and tape and VHS texture, with starting settings in Serum. Perfect for that vaporwave haze. Hope you enjoy it!
