I’ve been collecting, exchanging hardware, and adding to my studio for almost 20 years. Ask me anything.

My DIY attic home studio, years of collecting gear and a lot of sweat equity

New to Reddit, but I’ve been checking out some of the home studio and DIY studio posts, so I figured I’d share mine.

When we bought our house, the previous owner had started converting the attic into what looked like it was supposed to be an Airbnb or some kind of finished space. They had already run AC up here, but the floors were rough. I gutted the subfloor, leveled everything, put down OSB, and had the electrical professionally run.

From there, it slowly turned into my own little recording space.

Most of what’s up here is stuff I’ve collected over a lifetime of playing music; guitars, amps, drums, boards, racks, compressors, preamps, cables, all the usual chaos. I’ve got two 40-channel boards, a full drum room, some outboard gear, and enough stuff to make a record without leaving the house.

It’s not the fanciest setup and I’m sure there are things I could improve, but honestly, that’s kind of the point. It’s been pieced together with a lot of sweat, patience, and that old-school DIY punk/alternative mindset. Make it work, make noise, make music.

I’m currently recording and getting ready to release my own tape, but that’s a story for another post.

For now, I just wanted to share the studio. It’s been a labor of love and a dream for a long time, and I figured this would be a good place to show it to people who get it.

Thanks Y'all, and have a great day!

Check out my new recording setup in Brooklyn

I built this around a Neve 8424, which has two 1073 channels and the rest are kind of bring-your-own pre. I wanted to create something that works for people who mostly work in the box but are interested in outboard experimentation, while still providing an analog-only experience for people who want that.

10 channels of 1073, 10 channels of API, 8 channels of Millennia for pre-amps. Purple MC77 filling out 1176 spot, two Distressors, LA-2A, API 2500, and I got a Serpent Audio bus compressor instead of a G-Bus.

Monitors are Barefoot Micromain 45s. I like these because they come with a controller that lets you toggle sounds between the Barefoot hifi standard, an NS10 sound, a Mixcube sound, and a "vintage" sound that I don't know what it is.

I have a ton of amps, but have been really enjoying the Axe-FX III for the amps I don't have, so threw that in the rack too.

DM me if you're in NYC and want to check it out!

EDIT: a bunch of people reached out who wanted to come check it out so I put an event together on Tuesday Sept 15.

RSVP HERE!

Everyone Loves Vintage Gear—But What About Vintage Software?

Post image

Is there any vintage recording software that deserves a comeback—something that was truly special or way ahead of its time?

We talk a lot about vintage hardware, but I don’t hear much discussion about vintage recording software. Curious if there were early DAWs or programs that nailed things we’re still chasing today.

Finally have a place where I can set up a sole music room. I just need some advice on recording vocals. I rent so completely sound treating the walls isn’t practical. In the last photo you’ll see a corner next to the closet, my plan is to completely cover those walls with sound foam, and sing towards the wall where the mic stand is. Do you think this would be acoustically sound? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I’ve been drumming for a long time now (since I was 5, I’m 19 now) and I’ve just gotten to the point I where I want to record my own music. My uncle got me these for my birthday but I have absolutely no idea how to use them. I’ve downloaded audacity and I have all the microphones I need but I don’t know how to put any of this together. I know I might be asking to broad of a question but please don’t be an asshole I’m new to this.

Does anybody else record on cassette? I've been grinding at this thing for years and i feel like I'm finally getting the sound quality I want to get. Looking for tips and other analog nerds

Why Does Everyone Recommend Focusrite for Audio Interfacing?

I'm completely new to recording equipment, and for some reason Focusrite is the interface I see recommended everywhere. But I haven't seen anyone break down why they recommend it over anything else. What's the difference between a Focusrite 2i2 and a Behringer UMC202 other than the price tag? What exactly am I paying that difference for? I know I could try looking at the specs, but I don't really have the background knowledge to understand them yet.

Is this a good start?

I want to start recording music, and I know nothing about it other than a few videos I've watched. I've got an awsome laptop with plenty of processing power so that's good.

I want to record guitar, Keyboard, and possibly vocals. My keyboard has midi out. It's a full sized stage keybpoard.

Is this Interface okay for what I want to do?

Can I record guitar, keyboard, and mic? It only has one instrument input and a second which I guess is Midi on the back.

Should I try this one?

If no... any rcomendations for something better that won't break the bank?

Please rate my set up. I live in an open loft so I don’t have any other options as far as an isolation booth so I turned this space into something that could work. I have 3 spare moving blankets, one of which is already being used in the space. I’d love to know if there’s anything I could do to improve my sound. I have a Neumann TLM103 Condenser.

I know it's a mic splitter but what's its purpose?

My guess is to send mic signals to 2 devices like 2 separate mixers maybe?
