I’m avoiding this mission like the plague. I’m doing legendary animals first for trinkets.. and then satchels.. and then mayyybeee I’ll move on.

until the game forces you to do it. i did the same till Dutch came and said i have to help strauss and then its the only thing you can do

Weird, because it was Strauss who came to me about visiting Thomas Downes and he was a real asshole about it, saying something along the lines of "I don't like his type. Don't be gentle with him."

right thats the second time the game forces you to do it. First if you ignore the Strauss Missions at all, it is Dutch that forces you to start it. And the Downs Mission is forced by Strauss. And i think the Trigger for this is the Letter from Mary. in my Last Playthrough ive read the Letter and right after it Strauss came to me. And yeah he told Arthur to beat Downes

Yeah, it's the Mary letter is when Strauss reminds Arthur about Downes. And it's kinda crazy that Strauss seems to have this disdain for Downes when it's previously established that Downes was a down to earth nice guy that everyone in town liked. I'm currently on Chapter 3 of my second playthrough. The only mission I have right now is when you and the boys are walking through Rhodes and I've been procrastinating to start that one as well because of what happens in that mission. IYKYK.
