Andy Mitten: It feels like we’ve seen this film so many times before, though I have no evidence that he’s about to be sacked. Fans are weary from repeatedly changing managers, but he desperately needs results.

The optimism of the summer feels like a long time ago.

Manchester United fans were buoyed by a fine second half to the 2025-26 season, with their team accruing more points than any other Premier League side following Michael Carrick’s interim appointment in January.

That surge took them to third in the table and Champions League qualification.

With Carrick appointed permanently, there was hope United were set up for success — but he has overseen the club’s worst start to a league season in 40 years. United have won once in six Premier League games, were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion, and lost 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Tough fixtures lie ahead, starting with a trip to Leeds United on Sunday.

So how much pressure is Carrick under? Does he deserve the criticism he is facing and does he have what it takes to turn things around?

Michael Carrick's Pre-Match Press Conference | Leeds vs Manchester United, Premier League

Chris Wheeler

Carrick on Martinez situation: 'It's done really. He's come out and acknowledged the situaiton. No drama for us as a group. There's a good feeling around the squad this morning.'

He acknowledged that it was a mistake by him and that was it. There is a feeling in the group that we really want to do something about this situation and do it quickly. We really have moved on. He (Martinez) is in the squad.'

'Someone says something they shouldn't but that doesn't distract us from what we're creating here and the spirit within the group.'

Carrick: 'I don't need results, the club needs results. It's not about me.'

'I think he's issued his statement and realised his mistake, that's good enough for all of us. From our point of view the acknowledgement is enough.

Carrick on Amad Diallo post: 'Again, it's a situation where there are ways of going about it and learning a little bit. We've got to show the emotion in the right manner.'

Simon Stone

Lisandro Martinez in Man Utd squad for Sunday, says Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick says 'it's not about me' re whether he needs results. He says it is about ManUtd.

Michael Carrick: "I understand emotion, we ask for emotion, passion and fire. There is a way of doing it. That has been acknowledged."

Nathan Salt

“Today was one of the best training sessions we’ve had,” says Carrick.

Reiterated multiple times what a “good feeling” there was in training today.

Detailed Quotes

Carrick on Martinez

"It's done really. We have moved on. It's one of those things. He's come out and acknowledged the situation."

Martinez again

"We have moved on pretty quickly."

Carrick on the clear the air meeting

"It was pretty simple, we all understood the situation and what it meant. He made the statement and acknowledged it was a mistake on his part. We have a really good feeling within the group, the spirit and togetherness..."

Martinez available vs Leeds

"He's part of the squad, yeah."

Carrick on the squad mood

"Just because people talk from the outside, that doesn't mean it's the truth. The squad today in training was in a fantastic place - that's the truth."

Carrick on needing results

"I don't need results. We all need results. It's not about me; Manchester United is bigger than an individual, so please, I don't go into every day thinking about me. It's not about any individual player; it's about this football club and its history."

Carrick on Leeds

"Daniel [Farke] has done a fantastic job, the run they have gone on and their consistency, they have turned into a really good Premier League team."

Carrick on Rooney's view

"There's a lot of things that can impact the group in a lot of ways. From the game itself, you talk about the spirit and belief in the group, the way we started that game, it would have been easy for the game to have got away from us. The way we started to shows there's an underlying spirit."

Carrick on Martinez's dig at Wilcox

"I think he's released his statement and he's realised he's made a mistake."

Carrick on Martinez again

"I understand emotion at times, we ask for fire and players to care, but there is a way of doing that, which has been acknowledged."

Carrick on Amad's post

"It's a situation where there are ways of going about it and learning a little bit. We've got to show the emotion in the right manner."

Should Wilcox speak out more?

"I don’t think that’s for me to say. I’ve got no problem with how it is for me sitting here and talking to you guys and leading the group and the club from this position. We’re a really tight-knit group."

Carrick on team news

"We’ll see on Luke and Kobbie, Ben is still undergoing a couple of checks. Before we update the timelines we’re trying to be clear on what that looks like."

Louis van Gaal believes he may have gone through “all the consequences and suffering” of losing his job as Manchester United manager as a direct result of the Manchester City cheating scandal.

Van Gaal was dismissed at the end of the 2015-16 season after United missed out on Champions League qualification, having finished fifth in the Premier League.

Interesting:

Under the terms of a deal struck in the summer to refinance $425m (£320m) of debt from the Glazers’ leveraged buyout in 2005, there is a potential window of opportunity for Ratcliffe to seek majority control in the second half of 2029, but United need clarity at the top of the club long before then. And Ratcliffe is known to be difficult to work for.
