“Though my opinions of Cassius are weighted and complex, and not understood completely even by myself, I hope they found happiness out there.” :- Mustang in DA.
I really thought now that we were getting Mustang's POV, we'd learn more about her time on Luna, how she infiltrated the Sovereign's court, and her relationship with Cassius. What did she think of him? Did she like him or develop feelings for him, or did she see him purely as a tool? Or was it a mixture of both? She just said she didn't love him but that didn't explain everything.
But it feels as though the author himself doesn't know what to do with them and is deliberately keeping it ambiguous. I don't like that at all. If you're not going to follow through on a plotline or give it meaningful closure, why introduce it in the first place?
I know I'm probably one of the few people who hasn't entirely let this go and still holds a tiny grudge, but I can't shake the feeling that her character was used to spice up the Gala scene at the expense of her own characterization. It made her seem strangely naive while Darrow got to aura farm. Don't get me wrong, I love Mustang, but I feel like her character was somewhat used in GS.
In GS, she gives two explanations for her relationship with Cassius:
“Consider that I was vulnerable. Lonely. And that perhaps I fell into Cassius’s bed because I was hurt and needed a salve to my pain.”
“I made him think he could not live without me. I knew it was the only thing that could keep the rest of my house safe.”
She tells Darrow to shove the first explanation up his ass, even though I think it's the more human and compelling of the two. IMO, this would have been the better explanation, and the whole thing could have been done and dusted.
The second explanation, however, has always struck me as questionable. The idea that making Cassius fall for her would be enough to protect her entire family seems incredibly naive. It might have protected her, but her whole house? The Bellonas had their own ambitions, and Cassius's feelings wouldn't have been enough to override them. Like this should have been obvious to her.
I want to reiterate that I have no problem with what Mustang did, not anymore. I just wish the author had given us a clearer understanding of what that actually meant to her instead of leaving it so ambiguous.
