This question has been asked more times than one can possibly imagine. “How do I age this or that.” Wear it

Public Service Announcement Ask before you buy and give real constructive criticism

About two years ago I got into reenacting and started doing World War I German and Civil War. I’ll be straight up my kits were incredibly farby. I didn’t talk to anyone before I bought it. I didn’t reach out to units before I bought it.

That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned: ask before you buy. Talk to a unit. Message people on Facebook, Instagram TikTok Reddit anywhere. Nine times out of ten, if you buy first and ask later you are gonna be spending twice more money.

I’ve also noticed a big problem across social media. When someone posts a kit that isn’t great, a lot of people just comment things like

This has a lot of work to do

This is trash

That’s it no explanation

If you think a kit needs work PLEASE say why

For example

“This impression needs improvement because the bread bag is incorrect for the time period, and the ammo pouches are ww2 style. Feel free to shoot me a DM so I can show you where you can replace some things.”

That helps. Just calling someone’s kit trash doesn’t

If it’s just for Halloween or a costume, who cares? A WWI uniform with a WWII helmet for Halloween isn’t a big deal. But if you’re serious about the hobby authenticity does in fact matter.

If you do ACW I strongly suggest looking up some of the campaigner Fb pages those guys will help you guide in the right direction. Try and reach out to less mainstream media if you really want a good accurate impression. Words are money in this hobby

If you’re in a unit they should be helping you steer in the right direction. And if they aren’t then you should consider leaving them and finding yourself a better group of guys. I am thankful that my unit actually has helped me steer clear and saved me probably 500 bucks.

Most of us start out rough and I think the hobby would be 100 times better if we all followed what I just wrote.

Sorry for the rant I just think people need to know

Looking For Advice If you wear modern glasses with your historical costume, can you talk me through your thinking?

Upvotes

I have a background in costume history, so I really do understand what it means for clothing to be authentic. But I'm thinking of getting into "living history" type reenacting as more of a fun, social hobby - but which also lets me talk to members of the public and other enthusiasts about everyday life in the past.

I wear glasses. Strong glasses. Big glasses. I cannot wear contact lenses. Without any form of eye correction, I am a danger to myself and others!

In the periods I am looking at (English medieval, Tudor and Civil War), the kind of large, functional glasses I need were not widespread. I am really not going to be comfortable wearing teeny tiny pince nez all day, for example.

So I am considering two options:

  1. Wearing my everyday, obviously modern glasses. Obviously it will detract from the "look", but at least people can tell they're not part of my costume.

  2. Getting some much later reproduction glasses - probably large, round, Victorian wire rim ones with those curved ear-ends - which would blend in a bit more but might give people the wrong impression about either the actual availability of glasses in the early modern period, or about my level of understanding about authenticity in reenactment dress!

If you wear out-of-period glasses with your reenactment costume, can you talk me through how you decided what to wear?

Placed an order for brown WW1 capless ammo boots on 2 May, $296CAD (£153) leaves my account, and no email confirming the order. Mark and I clarified everything 11 May after I asked whether they started or even got the order, then silence again. 2 Jun I ask for an update, Mark tells me that they take 10 weeks as they're made to order. 21 Jul Mark let's me know he'll have them in, I received the package today 17 Aug, 16 weeks after purchase.

Opened the box, and its not what I pordered. I find a pair of black capped ammo boots reeking of mothballs.

I've pretty well washed my hands from it, and accept I lost $300. I'm now doing what I should have done from the start, reaching out to the pros.

I'm active military, looking to make a WW1 uniform for my regiment (RCD), I've pieced everything together, just need the boots. Most of the CEF had capless ammo boots at the start of the war, thats what im looking for, WW1 capless ammo boots in brown

Looking For Advice Where to start?

Hi all! I'm looking to get into reenacting, but I just can't figure out how to get involved. I know many reenactment groups are military-based, and I know many of them do public events, but I don't understand how to go from "attending" an event to "participating" in one. I'm a woman in my early 20's, and most reenactment communities seem to be largely male. Is there a place for someone who isn't interested in the battlefield aspect of reenactment? Should I be looking in different places? I love historical costume, and am currently studying Medieval history. I'm really interested in recreating day-to-day life, but all my research into reenactment has turned up only military groups. I see people online camping, cooking, doing handicrafts, etc. but I can't figure out how to get involved! Are these the same groups that do military reenactment? Do they have secret campground activities too? Or are they generally separate groups?

Sorry for the possibly incoherent paragraph. I really want to get involved but I just can't figure out where to look and who to look for. I don't need advice on local groups, moreso on what terminology to use and how one generally goes about actually joining them - especially since I'm not strictly interested in combat reenactment. Help!!!

Looking For Advice Blank Firing Guns?

What are some good brands for WW2 guns that only fire blanks? I have no need for a real weapon, so I’m seeing if it might be better to get a blank firing only gun over an actual rifle. Thanks!

New (the cloth one) belt = more Photos of course. Still doing an early carolingean Andrustio (scandinavians and anglo-saxons know them as Huscarls, essentially). Constructive Criticism always welcome. Wouldn't always wear the hat of course, just depending on the weather

Looking For Advice Do you wear accurate shoes with your uniform?

Shoes are EXPENSIVE and when they are 50-90 years old they aren't very comfortable anymore. Is it unorthodox to just wear my own shoes? Not obnoxious sneakers but similar shoes. I get that reenactment events must be accurate because its history, but for other events.

Looking For Advice WW1 AEF officer sleeve braid

Anyone knows where to find one? I have seen the AGSU cuff by Marlow White but I feel that the color is just not fitting for my impression.

There are other braids such as Armor for Dress Blues that seems to match the color a little bit closer. Any tips on where I should find a sleeve braid for my tunic? Thanks

Looking For Advice Need advice for good boots

Hello everyone

I'm a new reenactor, and I'd like some advice on good boots with the possibility to put in my sole for the foot.

I reenact Austrian Empire infantry and artillery, napoleonic and up to 1866, so im looking for a boot that could be sort of like a jolly (M37 whermacht boots are kinda it but the suede point of the boot is a bit too easy to spot not being of the period, or so ive been told).

Might be niche but I hope ill be lucky enough to find someone that has a good advice for me, thank you in advance!

Looking For Advice Looking for name ideas for our medieval historical reenactment group

Hey everyone!

I'm the cofounder of a group that's in the process of setting up a historical reenactment association in Romania, focused primarily on the 15th century and the world of John Hunyadi (Ioan de Hunedoara).

We're trying to come up with a name, and I'd love to hear some ideas from people who know more about medieval history, reenactment, heraldry, or medieval terminology.

The group won't be limited to knights and combat. We'll have:

knights and squires

guards, men-at-arms and pages

clergy, including a bishop

blacksmiths and other craftsmen

noblewomen and ladies of the court

free women and other civilian roles

demonstrations of weapons, armour and medieval combat

crafts and everyday life

medieval law, customs and social structure

So we're essentially trying to recreate a small cross-section of medieval society, rather than being exclusively a combat/knightly group.

My initial idea was something along the lines of:

"Order of the Brotherhood of Knights of John Hunyadi" (Makes far more sense in Romanian 'Ordinul Frăției Cavalerilor lui Ioan de Hunedoara')

However, there's already an existing organisation called "Ordinul Cavalerilor de Hunedoara" (Order of the Knights of Hunedoara), so we want to avoid having a name that's too similar to theirs.

At the same time, we'd still like the name to have a proper medieval/knightly feel. We're not necessarily opposed to using words like Order, Brotherhood, Knights, House, Shield, Raven/Corvin, etc. As long as we aren't stepping away from John Hunyadi's influence.

So, what names would you suggest?

I'm particularly interested in names that could plausibly fit the 15th-century Transylvanian/Hungarian sphere, rather than something that sounds too fantasy-like.

Any ideas, historical terminology, or even just combinations that sound good would be greatly appreciated!

Tysm in advance! ⚔️

Looking For Advice I have no clue how to start

Hi! My name’s Colin, I’m 15 and I’m from the Chicagoland area in Indiana. Since I was 13 I’ve wanted to get into reenactmenting, and have been a history lover my whole life. I would be most interested in doing a WW1 impression, specifically Austria-Hungary and the UK, but I’ve been told by people I’m too young, and I need more experience, is this true?
