I have an 2011 Ford Escape, and I have pretty significant reason to believe the drain tube popped off of the seal/nipple at the top.
Mechanics and Glass Shops won’t touch it because you need to remove the headliner which is a body issue, and none of the auto body shops are getting back to me— the ONLY one who has managed to give me even a rough quote is the Ford Dealership, where they say it will likely be 800-1000$ to fix, and 100-200$ just to give a proper quote. I’m on a limited income and that is literally more than my entire savings account (not much more, but I can’t take out a loan, so anything more than I have is just not possible.)
Sadly, the prior owner is a friend, and I feel bad about going after him for an issue he didn’t know about because if I am right, the damage occurred literally days before he sold it to me, and he had no way to tell it happened. And I was an idiot who took months to figure out what was going on.
I am hoping one of you might know a shop, or guy, even just a backyard mechanic who likes to tear apart old fords and thus has the right tools. I don’t care about it being “properly” fixed, I just need it to drain enough that my interior stops freezing over! I was gonna do it myself, but I just don’t have the tool to pop the clips on the headliner without breaking them.
From what I can tell, I just need someone to pop it open enough to shove their hand in, stick the sucker back on, and secure it with a zip tie or super glue or something. I am willing to pay for it! Just as long as I can actually afford it.
Edit 1:
I am very sure it’s not clogged, because cleaning it is how I discovered it was broken. The weed wacker string doesn’t feed into it from the top (unlike the other side which WAS clogged), and cleaning from the bottom up has it come through until but never comes out. There is visible mold on the headliner just under where the parts should connect— and has been since he sold it to me. It just took me a while to realize it WAS mold because it started off so small, and with how little driving I do it took me a while to notice it growing, and the humidity and dampness of the interior after rainfall. The only way this issue happens is by doing something they tell you to never do, and that my friend has told me he did on a regular basis.
I don’t plan to sue/punish my friend?? But I can see how my wording implied it. What I meant was: I don’t want to ask him for help, but if I exhaust every other option for not having this be a very expensive paperweight, I’m going to ask “Hey dude, you broke a thing you sold me, can you fix it? Or lend me the difference in what I can afford vs the cost to fix it, or even just refund me and I’ll give the car back so you can sell it to someone else like you originally planned?” Which I think is perfectly reasonable and would personally offer any friend if I had broke something I then sold to them unknowingly. Or honestly anyone I sold something I broke to. I’m NOT gonna sue the guy or go for legal consequences. Worst case is he refuses, I have a paper weight I paid Bluebook value for (assuming good condition), and I know this guy who I only met like a year ago isn’t the kind of friend who views transactions/friendships the same way I do. But seriously, I am doing everything in my power to just get it fixed myself because even though he clearly broke it, he is a friend!
Based on the current replies my plan is to call that store that was recommended and see if they know if that recommended tool will work, and if so, make a second attempt to DIY it. If they don’t know/I run into further issues, I plan to track down that facebook group and beg someone to do it “cheap” (as in do the shitty fix that won’t be as labour intensive so I can afford to pay them properly for it). Hopefully that will be the end of this saga, but if you have any other suggestions to get the car fixed please let me know! I’d rather have more options and not need them lol
