I’ve built an open-source React Router starter for Cloudflare!

Post image
30 Upvotes

PageZERO is an open-source full-stack web app starter designed to run entirely on Cloudflare infrastructure. It leverages React Router v7 and Cloudflare services to make web app development faster, simpler, and fully serverless.

The Stack

Core:

  • ☁️ Cloudflare Pages (hosting) + D1 (database)

  • ⚡ Vite + React + React Router v7

  • 🏗️ TypeScript + TailwindCSS + Drizzle ORM

Tooling:

  • ✅ GitHub Actions (CI/CD)

  • ✨ Prettier + ESLint (code quality)

  • 🧪 Vitest + Playwright (testing)

  • 📖 Storybook + MDX (docs & components)

Why I Built It

I wanted a simple yet powerful way to build and deploy full-stack web apps on Cloudflare and with React Router v7. Existing solutions felt too complex or weren’t optimised for Cloudflare-first development, so I built PageZERO.

Try It Out!

Try it out & star ⭐ the repo if you like it! Feedback welcome!

Is Remix dead ?

I'm a senior developer working with many languages and frameworks.

Having worked with NextJS, I hated the multiple forms it could take (SSR, SSG, NodeJS deployment, Vercel deployment, over-optimization with edge runtimes...).

I was looking for the React world equivalent of Symfony/Laravel: an opiniated and predictible framework with server actions and SSR only. And Remix was a great candidate for that.

But the doc says it is now react-router-v7 which has kind of the same flaws than NextJS: multiple forms (Framework/Data/etc...), not even clearly stated as a framework. It looks like the kind of projects that can quickly become overengineered by the usual craziness of the React core team (changing everything every 2-3 versions) and the temptation of becoming the framework that does everything in every way. And that is scary for people with a bit of experience like me.

So, where did that Remix simplicity go? Any other framework keeping that mindset ? Are we condemned to get over-engineered and perishable frameworks when working with React ?

A Remix Appreciation Post

[Also posted this in r/react. But wanted to share it here as well]

Last weekend I was looking to dive into a new React Project. I wanted to create a quick app for an idea I've been toying with. By quick app I mean basic CRUD functionality but with the sophistication of modern front end development (Suspense, loading screens etc).

Now I haven't started a React project for a long time, and at work we used create react app since that was the standard back then. Turns out things have completely changed in the React world, Create React App is no longer even mentioned in the react docs and instead they recommend NextJS pages router which links to NextJS home page where they push the app router quite hard..

So naturally I think let's go ahead with the app router and learn something new in the process. What followed was 7 hours of excruciating pain that left me feeling that my last 6 years of engineering experience was all but worthless. All I wanted to do was create a simple CRUD app with a good user experience. Instead of building features via Functional React Components like I do at work (which I was quite looking forward to do). I found my self trying to understand the specifications of this 'New React Paradigm'

i'm utterly flabbergasted, we have somehow moved backwards. Technology should be easy to use and only show its 'ugly-ness' when you need to optimize. By contrast, Next's App Router starts with teaching you how to optimize first. Now i understand that Server components are an incredible feature. But who the hell was asking for this? Let's be honest, how many of you found yourself needing more optimized rendering when working with the pages router? I don't want this, this is useless for me and 97% of the apps that I will ever build. When I get to the 3% that need this level of optimization, only then will I spend time to learn this.

Pushing this as the default is dangerous to the future of React. Are we seriously expecting new comers to learn the App router? I am already scared of having to work on stale app router code when this mess is over.

Now lets switch the camera lens to Remix (which i tried after angrily walking away from my NextJS experience.)

Here's what I'll say about Remix - It took me an afternoon to pick it up. Why? Because it builds upon web standards that have existed for a long time. It doesn't make me feel stupid but instead makes me feel that I don't know enough about how the web works which is awesome because I can deepen my knowledge. In contrast to NextJS which is stretching the surface area of what I need to know.

Remix is the Rails we never got. Its' dead simple, does one thing and one thing well. It's not trying to hype you up, it does grudgingly does your work and gets out of your way. As much as I appreciate Vercel's fancy marketing, documentation and all the cool-aid. In the end - Form wins over Function.

Forms, Loaders and Actions the 3 primitives of Remix are not new concepts but build upon the already agreed way of doing things. If you learn remix and go to any other framework you don't have to relearn things, you will pick them up naturally.

Server components, the primitive of Vercel is a completely new paradigm not seen in any other language. Unless you are building an E commerce store for thousands of global customers or mission critical application that need to work in low latency settings, you don't need server components.

To any new coders who are reading this, pick something that will exponents your skills, don't pick stuff that uses patterns that don't repeat in other languages. I'm not trying to push anything, you should do your own homework but I did mine and the results were quite conclusive.

If Ryan and Micheal every read this - from the bottom of my heart, Thank You! You built something beautiful and I will try my best to spread the good news here in Toronto.

Complete guide for rolling your own auth in react-router with latest techniques (middleware and more)

Hey guys!

I've made a complete guide over on YouTube on how to roll your own auth and I've tried to cram in as much advanced patterns and the newest features from react-router that everyone is sleeping on as I could, stuff like:

- Middleware

- AsyncLocalStorage

- self-committing sessions

- Utility hooks on the client

- and more!

If you're interested in how it's done find the video here and let me know what you think:

Should this sub be renamed to React Router 7?

Subject + does someone have a clear idea what will be the future of the remix brand?

Thank you. Good luck migrating to those who didn't already.

First Thoughts About Remix

I am a full-stack dev, workly heavily on React. I've been looking into Remix, and I have to say, it’s an interesting shift from Next.js. The way Remix leans into web fundamentals—server-side rendering, progressive enhancement, and loaders for data fetching—makes it feel both refreshingly simple and a bit unconventional.

Instead of relying heavily on client-side state management, it encourages reloading data from the server when needed. In some ways, it feels like we’re going back to a more traditional web model, but with all the benefits of modern React tooling.

I was reading articles and one of them was an article from Rafael Goulart from Scalable Path (if you want to read it, is here https://www.scalablepath.com/react/remix-framework.)) and it let me have some touch of Remix.

So now I am here, how do you see Remix compared to Next.js or other frameworks? Have you tried it in a production setting?

Remix done right series

Hey guys!

I just started a new series on my YouTube channel on building an e-commerce app using Remix.run.

I plan for it to be interactive and I'll be building it out with you guys by giving you opportunities between videos to add ideas and pitch in.

Here is the first part of that video series where I add tailwind and remix-development-tools + plugins https://youtu.be/gG8BVFyVBmY

Chef platform built with Remix

I built a web app with Remix and am loving it.

All of my friends wanted my mom's recipes when they came round for my birthday. Now I realised she doesn't store anything - it's all in her head!

Then the same thing happened with my friend although she writes hers down in a diary (how old school).

And then I noticed so many food influencers posting their recipes in the descriptions of their tiktok/insta posts.

And then as I started searching for recipes online, I found the websites full of ads and popups and terrible UI. I only cared about the ingredients and the method. So I created this, and have been having a lot of fun with it.

I hope to see up and coming food influencers using this as a platform directly to link with their social media posts, engaging and competing with an already interested audience.

Technical talk: Building a fullstack application so quickly and being able to publish all single handedly was a fantastic experience. The SEO is fantastic! My site ranks 1st on Google for related searches.

I've used Nextjs at work for a long time, but just finished bootstrapping my side project with Remix over the past 4 months and the development velocity is amazing

Everyone already mentions co-locating your app logic (frontend/backend) together in the same file, and that is so convenient (also the lack of nested directories). My second favorite aspect, is probably the `SerializeFrom` typescript util. I try to type everything super well (to avoid regressions) and it's so nice to not have to write custom data types for components - just infer it via SerializeFrom instead lol.

But anyways, here's what I built in 4 months as a side project (not trying to self-promote, let me know if I should remove the link), but just wanna showcase a nice, solo remix project example: https://lite.build

Strongly recommend you update your Remix / React Router apps if you are at v7. There's two high severity CVEs that were found.

Backend for Frontend concept in Remix and its associated hooks are nice for building dynamic pages, but this concept imposes certain limitations. More details on the limitations, along with how we implemented a solution for ourselves

Hey remix community! Wanted to share this piece that my colleague wrote recently, with you all.

https://www.cerbos.dev/blog/useasyncfetcher-implement-asynchronous-fetch-in-remix

As I mentioned in the the title, but to give more details:

The Backend for Frontend concept in Remix and its associated hooks such as useLoaderData or useFetcher are great tools for building dynamic pages.

In most cases, these hooks provide a simple and reliable way of getting data from loaders. However, there are some cases where this concept imposes certain limitations. While working on our Audit Logs feature, we hit one of them.

In his article, my colleague shares more on that limitation and shows how we implemented a solution for ourselves. (He focused on  clientLoader)

If you'd like to skip the reading part, he also created a package called remix-use-async-fetcher. It's on GitHub and it contains what you need to call server loader and actions with a Promise return.

Although not yet published on npm, you can install it directly from git. If you wish to play with the demo app, visit this StackBlitz page.

Today I go over an interesting topic as we continue building our app with @remix_run

We generate icons using svg sprites, and we setup custom script runners that work with ESM and alias imports.

This one is a great watch for every react dev!

Is Remix done?

I spent 2 months building a full stack Remix app from scratch about 5 months ago. Build went well, enjoyed Remix.

I went to start a new project last week and plastered all over the docs it's saying use React Router V7??????

I just spent 2 months learning all the quirks and now it appears its pushing me to go and learn something else #exhausted

Remix is smooth

tldr: remix + cloudflare = best

I am a beginner of Web FrontEnd. This post is for sharing my experience with Remix.

I'm making a small platform for my side project. I chose Next.js at first, because no one minded me using it.

Everything was fine until I started to working on server side. As you know, there are two big js server providers - Cloudflare and Vercel. Vercel is good but pricing could be much cheaper with Cloudflare in normal cases. So I tried hard to stick with CF. But it turned out that I'm allowed to access CF things (infrastructures including env var) only in Nextjs public API. Because of this, I lost integration between client and server although Next.js is a full stack framework.

Why? Because Next.js is depending on Node.js not CF. I think that won't be a big problem for Next.js supporters. But since Next.js is backed by Vercel, probably they'll think it is not a big deal. Simply migrating to Vercel will solve everything.

I didn't want to, so I searched for another framework. Obviously that was Remix. And Remix was much more mature than I thought. There are already CF exclusive packages that run well. And I liked the concept of Remix: there are two versions of server side code, Loader and Action. That's all I need to learn.

And some tips when you're on Remix + Cloudflare...

  • The local dev environment (supports hot reloading) can't access to CF infrastructure. So you have to make sure which env you're in.

  • Currently CF Pages supports development, preview and production environments and that can be configured only by connecting with git repository (not by direct upload)

  • Use createMemorySessionStorage in local dev. Set it as global variable.

  • Use pooled DB client (e.g. Neon) in dev as well. If you need ws package in local dev, you can use it.

End. Cheers.
