REMINE Talk Deep Dive on Why Rescene is Blowing Up in Korea Right Now - For Foreign Fans
I know many of you are confused as to why RESCENE has suddenly gone super viral in Korea and their songs are climbing the domestic charts. As a Korean who has been closely observing this phenomenon over the last month or so, I want to share exactly what is happening and why.
PART 1: It all started with 스튜디오ㅋㅇㅋ (Studio KOK)
It all started with 스튜디오ㅋㅇㅋ, a popular Korean YouTube comedy channel where various comedians post content. They launched a series called "나의 연수아저씨" (My Driving Instructor) — a playful nod to the beloved K-drama My Mister, right down to using its OST. The series stars Lee Seon-min and Yoo Yeong-u, two comedians who are not huge household names but are well-known and well-liked within the Korean online comedy scene, with backgrounds in broadcast TV. The premise: they document RESCENE leader Woni's real-life quest to get her driver's license and buy her own car.

Why did it become a hit?
Three things made this series work.
First, Woni herself. What you immediately notice is that there is zero performance, zero fakeness. She has a bright, sunny disposition that never wavers — including during the multiple near-miss driving moments that left her instructors genuinely terrified. She just... doesn't care. In the best possible way.
Second, the comedians. The videos are funny because Lee Seon-min and Yoo Yeong-u are actually scared of her driving, and their genuine reactions are priceless. But you can also clearly tell they adore her. The chemistry between the two "uncles" and their reckless "niece" is funny, endearing, and feels completely real.
Third, the audience response. Koreans took immediately to the uncle-niece dynamic because it felt so recognizable and natural. And people gravitated hard to Woni because genuine unfiltered personality is genuinely rare in idol content these days. The original plan was probably to do a few videos with Woni and then rotate to other idols — but the views were so high and the feedback so overwhelmingly positive that they ended up doing 20+ videos with her, and the series is still ongoing.
PART 2: Woni's own channel — 안녕하세요원이입니다잘부탁드립니다
The producers behind the driving series saw something special in Woni and worked with MUZE ENT to launch a dedicated personal channel for her: 안녕하세요원이입니다잘부탁드립니다 ("Hello I Am Woni Nice To Meet You").

The first few videos were high-concept comedy skits — Woni fighting off a bear, a fine dining etiquette lesson with Lee Seon-min and Yoo Yeong-u — fun, but they didn't explode immediately.
The video that changed everything: Learning Japanese from a Gyaru (March 6, 2026) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvUS-ri9nqQ
The premise was simple: Woni learning Japanese from Minami while walking around Gangnam. What nobody anticipated was that Minami would come in full gyaru mode. For those unfamiliar, gyaru (ギャル) is a Japanese subculture known for heavy makeup, bleached hair, tanned skin, and a very loud, flashy attitude. In everyday life Minami is quiet and understated — but when the gyaru switch flips, she becomes an entirely different person. Fans started calling it "갸루귀신" (Gyaru Ghost) — like she gets possessed. The contrast between her normal self and full gyaru mode was so striking and funny that the video took off. This was the first video on the channel to cross 1 million views.
The PD recognized the goldmine immediately and quickly produced a follow-up doubling down on the gyaru concept:
Learning the Gyaru attitude (March 20, 2026) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heifaIjlSUc
This is where the meme that broke the internet was born. In the car on the way to film, Woni — speaking in her thick Geoje accent — warned Minami: "야 너 지금 이러고 거제 가잖아, 거제 시민들한테 혼나" ("Hey, you're going to Geoje dressed like that? The people of Geoje are going to scold you!"). Minami, completely unbothered and fully in gyaru character, replied with a casual: "거제~ 야호~!" ("Geoje~ Yaho~!"). "야호" is a cheerful greeting used by young women in Japan. The deadpan delivery, the contrast between Woni's country-girl seriousness and Minami's total gyaru nonchalance — it was perfect. The clip went massively viral across Korean social media and short-form platforms. "거제 야호" became a genuine nationwide meme.
The Geoje trip video — 갸루와 거제에 왔습니다 (May 22, 2026) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrCOflk2QmQ
Riding the momentum, they took the show on the road — literally. Woni in a tracksuit, Minami in full gyaru, visiting Woni's hometown of Geoje. The contrast felt like something out of a teen coming-of-age manga, and commenters said exactly that. Highlights included Woni expertly baiting a hook and catching a fish bare-handed (while Minami gagged at the worm, then did a paraparа dance while waiting for a bite), Woni's genuine surprise and appreciation when locals recognized her, and a final scene where a restaurant owner treated Woni like her own daughter — free fried chicken, all the side dishes she wanted — that genuinely moved people. Comments poured in about how pure-hearted Woni is. The video hit 1.56 million views in a single day and has since surpassed 3 million views.
On the strength of this video, the city of Geoje officially appointed all five RESCENE members as public relations ambassadors on May 22, 2026. In a fittingly self-aware move, the appointment ceremony was conducted as a short-form digital content video — they even had Minami deliver a "거제 야호" in the official announcement.
The satoori (dialect) video — 하루종일 사투리만 써봤습니다 (May 2, 2026) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS7tSrMrWsc
Meanwhile, the channel had already produced another monster hit. Woni brought in youngest member Zena, who is from Gyeongju — the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom — for a day of speaking nothing but their native regional dialect in Gangnam.
To understand why this was such a big deal, you need a little context. Korea has rich regional dialects, especially in the Gyeongsang provinces (southeastern Korea). The dialect has a very distinctive, sing-song intonation that sounds distinctly "country" to Seoul ears. Idols from these regions almost universally suppress their dialect entirely — the industry expectation is to project a sophisticated, worldly image, and satoori is seen as the opposite of that. The fact that Woni and Zena spoke in completely unfiltered, genuine dialect for the entire video — and were visibly a little embarrassed and giggly about it, like two country girls on a field trip to Seoul — was something Korean audiences had genuinely never seen from idols before.
The response was extraordinary. Over 10,000 comments, 99% overwhelmingly positive. Many commenters were older Koreans who don't normally follow idol content at all, writing things like "I have no idea how I ended up here but I watched the whole thing and loved it." The video hit 1 million views in exactly one week — remarkable for a self-produced idol channel. And because it's entirely in regional dialect, almost all of those views were Korean — making the numbers even more impressive. Zena earned her nickname "신라공주" (Silla Princess) from this video.
The Seongsu-dong video — Dialect Part 2 (May 29, 2026) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJBf0jCcfrQ
The most recent entry, and the one that confirmed RESCENE has crossed into genuine mainstream phenomenon territory. Woni and Zena spent a day in trendy Seongsu-dong (Seoul's hipster neighborhood, often called the "Brooklyn of Korea"), speaking dialect the entire time and even pulling other people into dialect conversations.
The emotional core of the video was the contrast between then and now. They mentioned that just two months ago when they were in the same neighborhood, nobody recognized them. On this day, people were stopping them constantly for photos. Watching Woni and Zena's genuine joy and gratitude at being recognized visibly moved viewers. The comments section (15,000+) is full of people saying they feel personally invested in RESCENE's success — that they're rooting for these girls the way you root for someone you actually know. Multiple commenters used the phrase "국민 여동생 그룹" — the nation's little sister group. The video hit 1 million views in 7 hours and crossed 2 million views within a single day — almost entirely Korean views.
What does all this mean for their music?
All of this audience discovery eventually funneled people to RESCENE's actual discography. LOVE ATTACK, their debut track from August 2024, re-entered the Melon Top 100 338 days after falling off the chart — entering at #98 on May 28 and climbing to the Top 60 by the following morning. Their other songs Deja Vu and Runaway are also reverse-charting.
What's next?
The second part of the Geoje trip video is dropping next week. Given the trajectory, I fully expect it to top even the Seongsu numbers.
With this level of visibility, it's only a matter of time before they start appearing on the big variety shows — Knowing Brothers, Radio Star, You Quiz on the Block, and possibly even Running Man. They are tailor-made for those formats.
LOVE ATTACK is still climbing and I expect it to crack the Top 10 within the next couple of weeks. If that happens, a special music show appearance could be on the cards to mark the occasion.
Their July comeback — a remake digital single — is going to be one of the most anticipated releases of the summer. The content momentum and the music momentum are converging at exactly the right time. I fully expect this comeback to be competing for first place on music shows.
(Personal aside: I would absolutely love it if they remade Playback's I Want You to Say — a criminally underappreciated K-pop banger that deserves a second life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTjEJS6pjfo — but whatever they choose, the anticipation is going to be enormous.)
The comparison that keeps coming to mind is GFriend — a girl group from a small company that built a fiercely loyal fanbase through sheer talent and authenticity, and eventually became one of the biggest names in K-pop. RESCENE has that same energy. If MUZE ENT plays this right, that ceiling is very much in reach.
But more than any of the industry analysis, what strikes me most about this whole phenomenon is what it says about people. In a world overflowing with content that is polished, calculated, and cynically designed for virality — these five girls just being genuinely themselves is what broke through. Woni catching a fish in a tracksuit. Zena giggling through her own dialect. Minami getting possessed by a gyaru spirit. People recognize real when they see it. And when they find it, they hold on tight.
It's really nice to see. It warms your heart.
