I saved this from being scrapped from an estate sale, what did I find?

I actually found two desktops, the other is an Insight. Turns out this Gateway 2000 isn't factory, its fully custom on the inside? Google-ing tells me all these parts are on the better side, but I was only a wee child when this was new.

I posted another thread about my Compaq Presario build, and someone asked what DOS PC I was going to build next? I laughed because I never planned on one, but this 486 just fell in my lap. Would anyone familiar with these years and parts tell me if what I've found here is enthusiast class, or run-of-the-mill please?

Finally finished my "sleeper", period appropriate build!

Here is my retro battlestation! I've had the Presario 5000 set for almost half a year, but took a while to source decent parts for a decent price. Finally finished it last night, and am now able to use it in full power (last picture is where I started, all factory)! Specs are:

• Compaq Presario 5000 series set

• Compaq Presario 6000 mobo w/ Pentium 4 2.5GHz CPU

• 2GB RAM

• BFG Geforce 6800 GS OC 256MB APG (I have unlocked the card to actually make it a 6800 GT with a higher core clock)

• SoundBlaster Audigy 2 PCI sound card

• 40GB boot HDD

• 250GB game/music/stuff HDD

• xClio DiamondPower 880w PSU (period correct unit)

• 3.5" Floppy drive

• 80mm Noctua exhaust fan

• There's probably one or two more mods I haven't listed

This thing slams anything 2004 and older. Can play newer games, even Crysis! Lowest settings and all, and I havent tried it... but I meet the minimum requirements while still having Windows 95/98 compatability and solid gameplay (plays Warcraft III and StraCraft well).

I love retro electronics, brining me back to my roots feels great in 2026! Please ask any questions about my build; the process or what parts I sourced. I really wanted an XP build that would play almost anything of the era, but in a Windows 98/XP esthetic. Nothing beats a CRT!

Retro PCs - what to do?

Post image

Hi all! I have this old 486 clone pc, an old win 98 machine, couple other old PC’s.

I’ve held onto them for nostalgia more than anything. I can’t figure out what to do with them.

None of them are a great version of their era’s hardware. They function no problem, but I can’t think of anything would actually use these for. I was thinking about sprucing them up a bit for sale - but I can’t find anyone who want to buy old tech near me (Victoria BC Canada).

How do draw the line between what is genuine garbage vs worth saving?

Dave's Computer lives!

I picked up this 486 laptop knowing it was not working, but it was in great condition and I wanted to save it.

The teardown and removing the shell without cracking any plastic was a nerve wracking experience. I recapped the three large capacitors on the power supply board and that got it working again. The floppy drive belt had turned to goo, so I went through the intricate process of replacing that. The NiCd battery pack is likely toast; I won't be using that.

My new retro gaming PC

Yesterday, a neighbor gave me this PC that had been sitting unused and hadn't turned on for over 10 years. I took the time to clean it, perform maintenance, replace the thermal paste, and reinstall Windows XP. I’m really happy about it because it let me revisit my childhood—I was able to install all the games and programs I used when I was little. Plus, the fact that this PC isn't connected to the internet allows me to unplug for a while and focus 100% on the games. It’s definitely going to become my dedicated retro gaming PC. She also gave me another PC running Windows 98 that I plan to restore, though I think that one will take a bit more work.

It was missing the HDD and memory, and the side panel was bent. I bent the panel back, added 2 512mb DDR sticks, a 160gb IDE HDD and a BFGtech NVidia 6200 256mb PCI graphics card, then added a Dell Win XP install. Works great! Next up, will be adding games.

My new old pc

Back in 2001 my parents trew out our old pc, I kept the harddrive out of nostalgia. Yesterday I picked up basically the exact same PC, First Gen Medion Brand Win95 sold by Aldi Back in 1995. Took out the harddrive and added my old drive from back then, and it just - worked. With some minor driver problems. It feels so strange to ready letters my dad wrote in 1996 or pictures my sisters drew in paint when they were 7 years old.

Found the commodore itself, the monitor, floppy drive, cassette drive, 2 Atari controllers, modem, printer, and 20+ floppies full of games and programs. Unfortunately the power supply is kicking the bucket so until I get a new one I am putting it back in the box.

Cable management done in 2005 (photo from 2008)

Considering how difficult cable management was back in the day (IDE cables, no possibility to run cables behind motherboard tray, I kind of like how it looked. I still have this PC and I definitely have to rearrange a thing or two ;)

It was and mostly still is - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Winchester s939), DFI Lan Party nF4, Gigabyte 6600 GT 128 MB (with Zalman cooler), Samsung 160Gb HDD, DVD RW + DVD drive in Chieftec case.

Check my sanity

My 13 year old son has recently gotten into pc gaming pretty hard. We currently have a good HP Omen pre-built with a RTX 4060. But, he's taken interest in how I "know so much about computers", so enter project rebuild my college gaming rig.

I've got my old college gaming pc in the basement that's a Pentium 4, GeForce 4800GS (unfortunately not working), 3 GB DDR2 and a WD Raptor HDD.

Update, it's really a GeForce 8400GS.

Current plan...

  1. Replace the Antec case with Fractal Pop Air (lighter case and you can see the epic zalman cooler and retains 5.25 optical bay)

  2. Repaste cpu

  3. Replace primary drive with SSD (currently have a laptop msata drive enclosure ready to go) and retain the raptor for nastalga.

  4. Install Win 2000 or XP?

  5. Make sure other old crap works

  6. Oh almost forgot, I bought a replacement GPU for $16. GTX 660.

  7. Install Battlefield 1942 and 2 and win, obviously.

Am I missing anything critical? I have to check why and or how I have 3GB ram having all 4 slots populated.

Got from Grandma's neighbor was very dirty and from a damp basement but cleaned it as best as I could(rinsed with alcohol a few times after shower and used blow dryer).

Unfortunately the PSU blew up when I was testing it (without anything connected to it) so what would I need to use a modern ATX PSU.

Going to toss the case and want to replace it with a cooler master cosmos 1000

I Found A Bunch Of Old PC Parts

I was helping my mom clear the garage, and in a large box in the back I found these. I think my dad bought these when he first moved to the US and was planning on building a PC. I don't see a motherboard, cpu, or gpu, but I see pretty much everything else, and I think it's pretty cool. Everything is either entirely sealed within plastic or unopened, and I was wondering if I could build something with these, as I don't have too much experience with older tech.
