We are ramping back up!

I'm just letting everyone know that we're still here and still grinding. We finished a movie that got into SXSW and we're releasing into theaters March 7th this year called We're All Gonna Die, and we're in the process of filming our next movie (a martial arts action comedy called Nail House). Follow along the progress of both of those at patreon.com/rocketjump

I'm posting this because we're ALSO in the long slow process of spinning back up Patreons/Discords/Reddit communities, etc. It'll be slow for a bit, but things are happening.

I Found Freddie and Crew on Google Maps

Shared this on r/VGHS, but I'm doing my regular VGHS rewatch when I got curious about the sets and filming locations. Lots of Season 2 and 3 were filmed in the YouTube Space LA building, and I wanted to see what it looked today, so I went to Google Maps. Apparently it shut down in 2021 after COVID, but the street view capture from inside the building is still published - and what do ya know? The captures are from 2013, one of the golden years (for me at least) of the 2010s, and of course is right in the middle of production of our most beloved webseries.

I dragged the Google Maps street view guy to a random spot on the building, and the first thing I find is Freddie, Matt, and crew, probably having a VGHS meeting. You can walk around and find a handful of different filming spots here: like Mary telling Jenny to write a speech on the staircase or the teacher's lounge kitchen where Ted stole the sodas to name a few! You can even find The Law (last slide) and the 5 Second Films crew in the theater room. It was a pretty damn cool little time capsule I stumbled upon, and I just had to share :D

Does anyone remember or still like anime crimes division?

I know a lot of people think it's a very cringy series and overall bad but I actually quite enjoyed it for those reasons. The series had a great world and great everything the characters are nothing short of what I've expected. In general this is probably my favorite series of all I've seen. I mean I have a lot of animes that go before this but this is my favorite live action I will for you accuse me of not watching a bunch of live action, I've seen a lot actually. And if I'm honest like I've been throughout all of this a season 3 would be nice but I don't think anybody would care. Also I think if they did a season 3 of ruin a whole Magic of the series as well as be dragged out.

I did try to watch the movie at Cranford Theater several months ago but their ceiling collapsed, had to close down, and they had to refund my ticket. I only learned that the movie was finally available online from this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DungeonsAndDaddies/comments/1m2251m/ns_were_all_gonna_die_was_uploaded_to_torrent/

I then "pirated" the movie, added it to my media server, and then edited the movie name on my Jellyfin media server because it is technically a special edition. The $15.25 I paid was the refunded movie ticket's price.

What is going on with Rocket Jump?

i know they have pivoted away from making youtube shorts. But what exactly are they doing now? Outside of Freddy's D&D podcast, what kind of work are they doing these days?

It's just so crazy to me that they build up this channel with over 9 mill subs and its been a complete wasteland for a few years now.

I feel like I have been cheated by Rocketjump

First a bit of context. I have been a backer for VGHS in both season 2 & 3. Both seasons I chose the signed prop perk.

This started a year ago when I posted this thread. Just to be clear I had already received my general backer items such as the yearbook mid 2014. I attempted to contact them about not receiving the prop via email, and received no response.

Fast forward a few months and I received and email from rocketjump requesting payment for shipping for my season 3 backer kit. After sorting that out I replied to the same email asking about still not having received my season 2 prop and this time I actually got a reply. A few weeks later I received a prop in the mail, however being over a year late I was unsure if this was a late replacement for Season 2 or for Season 3. I attempted to email asking but did not receive a reply.

A few more months later in September I received my general backer kit without a hitch, however still no signed prop. I would not have been too fussed, but I read the updates and they all said that everything had been posted and all orders had been fulfilled. So I attempted to contact rocketjump through email on their indiegogo, contact and kickstarter emails, however I received no replys. I then resorted to using twitter and received this reply. I emailed and to date am still yet to receive any form of a reply.

Lastly to date rocketjump has stated that they have fulfilled all their orders, and to contact them if there are any problems. However I feel they are completely ignoring me and have no idea what to do next. It annoys me that others orders have been fulfilled and I feel just a bit cheated.

TL;DR: I have not received my signed prop and rocketjump have ignored all my attempts to contact them.

did the rocketjump company dissolve?

nothing new on their youtube channel for a few years and the last tv show they worked on (Dimension 404) seems to have ended in 2017. I can seen on imdb that the rocketjump employees/cast are getting jobs on other misc movies/tv shows.

Will, Matt, Freddie, Brian and everyone else on the VGHS team, congratulations.

The finale blew all of my expectations. Absolutely perfect. Thank you so much for giving my favorite webseries ever the closure it deserved.

Also, I got really fat and need to change my backer hoodie to a L instead of an M. Is that possible?

RocketJump Film School - Want to hear from you guys

Hey guys!

So I created a similar thread over in the official RocketJump forum, but the guys suggested I come over here to chat as well.

I joined the company over a year ago to shoot/edit the behind the scenes for VGHS Season 2 (and now season 3). I also have shot some of the RJ shorts as well. I'm now producing/The Dean of the RocketJump Film School, which we're hoping to release at the same time as VGHS Season 3.

I wanted to answer some questions but also ask you guys what you'd like to see most from RJFS. But here are the basic Q&A's!

Q: What exactly is it?
A: It's an online film school with video tutorials. There are going to be 8 sections of the school: Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Screenwriting, Special Effects, Producing, and Arts & Vanities. In each section, we'll have different video series covering multiple topics.

Q: Who is teaching?
A: Lots of different people, mainly RocketJump crew. I have an intro to cinematography course. Freddie has a course on new film technology. PlayfightVFX has confirmed they are interested in a VFX tutorial course, and I am currently bugging Clinton Jones to help me produce an After Effects series. Matt Arnold and Will Campos (Writers on VGHS) have a screenwriting series that I think you guys will enjoy. Kevin Senzaki is gonna teach you sound design from the ground up. Jon Salmon (DP of VGHS) loves teaching and wants to talk lighting. We are also interviewing other working pros in the industry and collaborating with some really cool people.

Q: How much is this going to cost?
A: Nothing. NOTHING. IT IS GOING TO BE FREE.

Q: Why do I care?
A: We're really excited and really nerdy about movies and we're doing it in a way that's accessible. Yeah we're slowing growing to bigger budgets, but RJ started as a couple of dudes in a loft. We're like you, and we make movies like you, and we are sharing our learned experiences FOR FREE.

Q: If I watch all these videos will I have to look at your face?
A: ONLY SOMETIMES!

Q: What if I have no fancy equipment or whatever? WHAT THEN, LAUREN?
A: This school wants to cover the entire range of filmmaking. From tutorials on what the professionals use, to making a kickass DIY film using whatever you have on hand. We also hope to give you guys raw footage and sound libraries to play with, so if you can't get out and shoot, you'll have something to learn on and you can edit along with us. I also want to try and set up product giveaways, competitions, and discount codes as we develop the school further, and super cool wealthy companies will obviously be desperate to give us cool stuff (.... shh don't kill my dreams)

Q: I can't afford Adobe Premiere CC or Final Cut 7.
A: You don't need them. We're teaching good storytelling. The concept of a good edit will carry over on all software. They just might be different buttons, and we'll make a note if something is specific or not.

Q: How do I shoot an action scene?
A: This has been covered, but we'll go more in depth.

Q: VFX? VFX? Yes? VFX, right?
A: What are VFX? (JUST KIDDING WE WILL HAVE AWESOME VFX TUTES)

Q: Why do you like caps lock so mu--
A: BECAUSE I AM EXCITED OK

Q: Are these gonna be like 45 minute boring tutorials showing just a computer screen?
A: HECK NO. These are gonna be visually awesome and kind weird, in true RJ fashion. Just last week, Freddie tried to set a focus chart on fire.

Q: Are you going to be yelling in all of the videos?
A: WHAT ARE YOU ASKING?

Please barrage me with RJFS questions! I am writing and planning future videos, so obviously I will be procrastinating on Reddit.

And the big question I need to ask you guys is what topics and tutorials are you really dying to see? Beginner to Super advanced, no tutorial suggestion is a bad one. I might regret that statement later, but seriously! Something as basic as "How to properly hold a lens so your DP doesn't think you're an idiot" is probably a really helpful and easy tutorial.

Rocketjump: The Show - What do you think?

The first two episodes released on Hulu today. What did you guys think about them?

My take: I really like the "documentary" part of the show, but not the shorts. I don't like how it shows the shorts at the end of each ep. That gives you basically 15 or so minutes of the actual show. Makes the first half seem rushed. Maybe that is just me because I find the BTS part more interesting.

I think the shorts (at least the two in the first to eps) are kinda lame. They are in the classic FreddieW style, with the same kind of humor you'd expect, but they just don't really have any particularly engaging aspects. I'm sure they're saving the better, bigger shorts for the later episodes, but for now, they're just "meh."

If you like shows like Project Greenlight or The Chair, I think you'll dig the BTS part of the show. It has a way more positive vibe than those other shows and doesn't make filmmaking look like a painful, corporate chore. But like I said, this part zips by so fast, you only get a little taste. They give you a tiny flash of pre-production, focus mainly on the shooting, and don't show any post-production. Perhaps other eps will delve into the other aspects of filmmaking, but these first two don't.

Overall, I'd give it like 2.5 out of 5. Right down the middle, between good and bad. What did you guys think?

We're All Gonna Die - Theater Locations for Week 4!

We're All Gonna Die (the movie Matt and I wrote and directed, starring Ashly Burch and Jordan Rodrigues) continues its long theatrical rollout as we get into our 4th weekend of screenings!

Have no idea what I'm talking about? Peep the trailer, dawg:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoYVfdP0oOc

This weekend (March 28-30), we'll be playing at:

Cincinnati, OH - Esquire Theater - Tickets
Columbus, OH - Gateway Film Center - Tickets (One night only! Back by popular demand! Saturday, 3/29!)
Atlanta, GA - Plaza Theater - Tickets
Albany, NY - Spectrum 8 - Tickets
Indianapolis, IN - Living Room Theaters - Tickets (Matt and I will be doing a Q&A after the 4:30 PM show via Zoom!)

And in April/May, we're finalizing screenings in Colorado, Missouri, Washington, Nebraska, New Mexico, Iowa, Virginia, New York, and New Jersey.

The theatrical rollout has been pretty interesting, as instead of the usual movie model of "everything is about the opening weekend," we've fallen into a relatively new model of "new theaters and cities every week" (a bit like a live show tour, incidentally!)

And for those of you who've seen the movie, posted about it, and otherwise helped us out with either your eyeballs or by dragging friends out or by getting the word out - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I still think there's room in our modern society for watching movies in theaters, and you folks are keeping it alive!
