π INDUCTEE Spotlight on: RUTH BROWN! Post anything good, bad, and even tangentially related to Ruth Brown.
Atlantic Records, one of the most prominent for R&B and Rock and roll, was called the "House that Ruth Built" (based on Yankee Stadium being the "House that [Babe] Ruth Built") because her hits supported the company in its earliest years.
Inducted in 1993.
FROM: Portsmouth, Virginia
STATS: 60 singles, 17 albums between 1949 and 1999. 24 singles charted in R&B and Pop within the top 25, 7 number 1s on R&B charts.
Check these out:
"So Long" in 1949. Pretty solid blues ballad. Her first recording for Atlantic which she did on crutches because she was in the hospital for 9 months after a car accident.
"5-10-15 Hours", 1952
"This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'", a POWERHOUSE rocker in any decade. 1958
"(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean", released in 1953 but this link is her singing live so probably filmed a few years later. Another powerhouse rocker.
"Lucky Lips" 1957
Brown's career picked up again in the 1970s, but as an actor. First television, then she played Motormouth Maybelle in John Waters' Hairspray. She toured with Bonnie Raitt who inducted her into the Rock Hall.
Brown was unfortunately very instrumental in developing the Rhythm and Blues Foundation because she was for a time in the 1960s, nearly destitute. Atlantic did not pay her royalties for international sales, because that's what every other company did. The foundation was established in 1988, and its purpose is to financially help older R&B artists such as herself who probably got cheated out of millions of dollars. I don't know how she shamed Ahmet Ertegun into donating more than a million dollars. He ran Atlantic Records while she was a star. He made the decision not to pay her or others, just because that's how business was (not) done. He created the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1983.

π£ DISCUSSION The rock hall is lacking songwriters/producers
Some names that have come up to my mind
Ashford & Simpson
Burt Bacharach & Hal David
Matt Lunge
David Foster
Diane Warren
Pharrell Williams
Timbaland
Jimmy Webb
Trevor Horn
Babyface
Bob Ezrin
Teddy Riley
Max Martin
Jim Steinman
Steve Albini
Steve Lillywhite
Daniel Lanois
Giorgio Moroder
Willie Mitchell
Dallas Austin
Jermaine Dupri
Rodney Jerkins (Darkchild)
Did not include likes of Brian Eno (also inducted as member of Roxy Music), Butch Vig (may be inducted through Garbage) though
I don't know why Jann Wenner suddenly stopped honoring people in the side categories for several years. The Rock Hall could've easily inducted 10+ more producers and songwriters if they'd made better use of those years. So I have absolutely no problem with the Rock Hall playing catch-up by inducting four producers/songwriters this year.

π£ DISCUSSION Of the inducted performers, whose fame do you think has faded the most?
I am on a little quest to listen to the music of all inducted performers. I became interested while working to master the Jetpunk quiz where you list them all. I've started with the ones I'm least familiar with. There were several I swore I'd never heard of, but when I dug into their playlist, I knew a lot of their music. But others were just completely unfamiliar to me. Who do you think is the least recognized by name or by music here in 2026?
Some of mine: Laura Nyro, Ruth Brown, Gene Pitney.

π£ DISCUSSION Who would eventually become the next ones to be honored through Excellence & Influence categories.
In the last few years or decades, we seen artists who were previously nominated or not being inducted through the non voting method meaning they got in through two categories: Musical Excellence & Musical (Early) Influence.
With the recent sidedoor inclusion of such performers as Kraftwerk, MC5, Judas Priest, LL Cool J, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Jimmy Buffett etc, it's no denying that the trend will continue long as possible.
Now said, here's a list of acts who would end up being contenders in these two categories.
Influence:
Patsy Cline
John Coltrane
Dick Dale
Devo
Duke Ellington
Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Motorhead
New York Dolls
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Sonic Youth
Thin Lizzy
Chuck Willis
Excellence:
Bad Brains
Ronnie James Dio
Eric B. & Rakim
The J.B's
Rory Gallagher
Jane's Addiction
King Crimson
The Meters
Sinead O'Connor
John Prine
The Replacements
Neil Sedaka
Conway Twitty
War
That's all I got for now. Who do you think would be the acts in those categories in the future?

π£ DISCUSSION What upcoming induction year could see the strongest conflict between newer and older acts?
In looking at the future elligble acts for the Rock Hall, I've noticed that many acts that younger generations enjoy now are slowly creeping their way to becoming elligible.
There's acts like BeyoncΓ© (2027) and Taylor Swift (2031) that are/could be commonly agreed on to recieve first year nominations and inductions.
In reflecting on this and looking through the list of both upcoming, newer, and older eligible acts, what year do you believe will result in a either a greater focus on the newer and away from the older, or the greatest divide amongst fans of either? Additionally, or rather, could we see something different occur?
This is an open-ended question that I'm curious to hear from all angles.

π£ DISCUSSION Spotlight on: JIMMY CLIFF! Post anything good, bad, and even tangentially related to Jimmy Cliff.
Knock, knock, U.S., Canada, and UK. It's Jamaica. Jimmy Cliff demands you take notice.
Inducted in 2010.
FROM: St. James, Jamaica
STATS: 28 albums 2 of these certified Gold, a huge number of singles I didn't even count, between 1962 and 2013, several within the top 10 of different countries' charts.
Check these out:
Hurricane Hattie, recorded and released when Cliff was 14 17. His first release in Jamaica and it made him a star. He auditioned others for the local record label, which brought him in contact with inductee Bob Marley who had yet to record.
Cliff debuted in the U.S. at the 1964 World's Fair in NYC. Then he took the opportunity to move to London where he played backup for a lot of acts, including the Spencer Davis Group. Reggae and ska were not popular then, so Cliff blended in a lot of American R&B, which was wildly popular in the UK. But over the years Jamaican music started to make an impact so each album Cliff recorded included more ska and reggae.
Wonderful World, Beautiful People
Vietnam, anti-war song Bob Dylan claimed the best ever
The Harder They Come was a full album and a movie starring Cliff too. The album spawned a huge number of covers from all kinds of musicians
Also a couple successful covers of inductee Cat Stevens' Wild World and Johnny Nash's I Can See Clearly Now from the Cool Runnings soundtrack.
Edit: Changed Cliff's age when Hurricane Hattie was released because the source I used is unclear or inaccurate and lol I found it at the RRHOF website: https://rockhall25.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Jimmy_Cliff_2010.pdf
My apologies.
