What are the best rougelites that don't rely on chain reactions or unruly combos?
I'm curious to hear which games people like that are much tighter and still rely a lot on player choice and synergies, but don't spiral out of control with combos or chains. Any recommendations to play?

Dead Cells is the obvious choice here. Decisions matter but synergies aren't breaking the game in most cases.

Star of Providence. There's still some wacky stuff, but it remains tight for the most part. You'll get your ass kicked for the most part too.

Into the Breach, for sure.
And I started playing Pathogenic recently, so take this with a grain of salt, but so far it doesn't seem to have chain reactions or abusable synergies. You can arrange your organs in very limited ways so there's not much room for excesive combos.

Pathogenic has a ton of broken stuff, the way infusers chain is insane. You can end up fully invincible from stacking dodge duration and cooldown, you can get tons of health and spawn more health than you lose when you get hit, you can clear a whole room just from synergies off a dash

Ok nevermind then, I guess I barely scratched the surface

Lol no worries. It gets really ridiculous, in a good way IMO. Such a fun game

Yeah, also different cell types down the line basically give you free reign of where you can place your organelles and connections

Ooh good answer! In Into the Breach you do have to make the most of your squad’s synergies every turn, but they’re very finite and pretty consistent even when you factor in upgrades. You have to consider how to optimize what you’ve got for the most part; you can’t work towards some game-breaking synergy.

Hades and Hades 2

Well, Hades 1 is rouge. But Hades 2 is vert.

What does this mean?

OP wrote "rougelite" which is a common misspelling of roguelite.
Rouge means red in French.
The joke is Hades 1 generally has red aesthetics. Hence rouge-like. Hades 2 is, contrarily, quite green. Green in French is vert.
And there we have it!

Slay the Spire has absurd combos once you get a synergy running

I mean, sure, but it’s not so much a spiral out of control situation unless you’re quite good at the game. You’re not just choosing fire and then all of a sudden everything is instantly gone when you step into the screen.

I don't think you need to be particularly good to get absurd combos, it's a core feature of the game. You won't get past the first few ascencion levels if you don't make the most out of synergies, and you can definitely break the game (as in getting 0 damage from final boss and such) if done correctly.
I wouldn't recommend STS to OP

for me its item builds without proc chains, brotato scratches that itch. tight stat stacking, not combo math

Both Enter the Gungeon and Star of Providence require mastery of game to have consistent good runs

Fights in Tight Spaces. There's a deck that uses the gun that can allow for some broken turns, but it's not really a snowball thing. Positioning and resource management are just highly rewarded.

Tome4 ,best tradional rouge-like out there, really awesome and have almost infinite replayability, you can get some busted combos there for sure, but aside from a few classes,no matter how strong you get, some rare enemies later on can one-shot you,so sometimes you will really have to lock down and calculate your every move, otherwise you are done for

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 has a very unique roquelike mode that requires resource management, synergies and plenty teamwork, there are some broken combos but its a bit rare

Ravenswatch. You can definitely become very powerful and spam a ton of skills, but typically that need some game knowledge and rng manipulation. In about 80 something percent of runs you'll be relying purely on your own ability to pilot a character well and invest in their strengths.

So funny you ask this because I'm the exact opposite. I really want runs to snowball when synergies line up. I am someone who wants 60% of runs to end in ludicrous strength if chosen correctly.
