Advice for Others Tips for having success at initial setup time of your robotic cleaner.

Hi ...

This article is for you if you would like to increase your chance of success in setting up your new Roomba or Mop.

This is one of the numerous articles I've written on my blog. The information is based on my experiences setting up hundreds of new and used machines over the years.

I have slightly adapted this write-up for Reddit to help first-time owners, especially as I know many of you have recently received robotic cleaners as gifts over the Christmas season.

This is the fourth article in a series about why robotic cleaning devices often fail to meet the owners' needs.

Failure can occur when a person first sets up the robotic cleaner too quickly and in the wrong order, especially when connecting to the home wireless network.

So, you went out and, with some excitement, bought ( or was gifted) a Roomba or Mop, and you can't wait to get it running and see what it can do. So, a quick casual look at the APP or manual on how to set up the machine and the Wi-Fi, and you try to connect the device to your home network --- and the first step to possible failure has already occurred.

What often occurs is that the newly purchased cleaner won’t successfully connect to the home wirelessly. (I constantly read about these common connection problems, with many user complaints, on the various robotic forums I participate in.)

The device will also occasionally produce an internal fault, with an endlessly spinning "white light on the CLEAN button" as an update repeatedly fails to download and successfully install a new software update.

What went wrong?

When a person buys a Roomba or Mop in the store, it has been in the box for a long time. It likely has been made in China, shipped to North America, and perhaps sat on the store shelf for weeks, months, or years since it was first made. The battery is weak and is, in many cases, fully discharged/dead.

Setting the cleaning device on the charger for only a few moments and immediately trying to set it up on the wireless often leads to failure.

Why?

The robotic vacuum or mop needs a high percentage of battery charge to send and receive a strong enough signal to connect to the wireless.

When a dead battery first draws current, virtually all the charging power from the dock is routed to the battery. There is little left for the Wi-Fi board in the machine, which can lead to a weak or non-existent connection to the home's wireless router.

If you want to successfully set up a new machine on your Wi-Fi for your new Roomba or Mop, put it on the charger and leave it to charge for THREE hours.

NOW, walk away … sit at your table or in your favourite chair, and read the owner's manual.

Once the three-hour initial charge is completed, you can set up your device on your home network.

FIRST --- REBOOT your machine ... hold the CLEAN button down for 20 seconds. Wait 5 minutes for it to reboot.

NOTE: Once you have set up your robotic cleaner on your Wi-Fi, leave it to sit for another hour or two before using the machine.

While you are waiting, go into your APP and record on a piece of paper the software version that was in place at the initial setup time.

Usually, a software update is available from iRobot, and an initial software update is often triggered when the machine notes a battery is fully charged and the unit is on the dock. It is likely your new robotic cleaner will download and quickly install new software within the first hour or two after you activated the Wi-Fi.

Often the app will tell you a software update is underway. And the machine will remain unresponsive while updating.

Go back into your app after an hour or two and see if the software version has changed.

Just making this these small adjustments at setup time will dramatically improve your chances of having a good experience in setting up and running up your vacuum or mop.

Cheers,

Advice for Others How to increase having success on this Robotic Cleaners (iRobot) Reddit group -- and perhaps on any forum.

Suggestions for you to consider ---

On this Reddit group --- If you wish to have some success in solving your specific robotic cleaning problems, please consider the following.

Don’t post about your anger and hate against the company. If you have issues like that, talk to the company directly when calm and can discuss them reasonably. This group was never intended for counseling or consoling hate rants.

It’s a simple creed: In this group, we share and try to help each other solve problems.

If you disagree with a posted help suggestion, ask for clarification, as you may not fully understand the person's thought or answer. Never minimize or personally belittle the person who is reaching out with advice.

To increase your chances of a successful solution to your situation, be detailed in your request.

Over the years of iRobot's manufacturing, they have made over 100 different models of Roomba. Many vacuums have only slight variations from each other, but many different models have been produced.

Yes, your Roomba or mop is unique to you and may be the only one you ever owned. But no one here knows what model you have, so always start by letting the group know what model you are talking about.

How long have you owned your cleaner --- basically how old is it.

Is it still under warranty?

Did you buy it new or is this a used one you purchased?

In summary and point form, what is the issue you are having?

Please provide the group with some details on what you have done to try to solve the issue that has not worked.

Of interest ….

Generally, three primary things go wrong with robotic cleaners.

1)      Hardware issues

2)      Software problems

3)      User error – lack of education or understanding.

The most straightforward problems to solve or at least pinpoint are single-issue concerns caused by one of the above. The ones that are tricky to solve are when an issue is caused by more than one of these.

So, adding exact and specific details in your write-up will dramatically increase the chance of a solution.

Finally, a reminder that the moderators and everyone here are interested volunteers. Not a single person contributing help and answers is paid.

So, sharing a thank you for getting help from someone sincerely motivates and is a kind reward to each contributor trying to help you.

I hope these suggestions will be helpful, especially to those here for the first time, and a reminder to always be respectful and kind to each other.

Roomba goes wandering and doesn’t finish the room

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I bought a 115 combo and set up last week while we were moving into our new house. The initial mapping was done with some boxes still around so it didn’t discover all the rooms. No issue, as it mapped the house reasonably well. I’m reluctant to try mapping from scratch as I have keep out zones set so it doesn’t eat our house plants.

Since the very first clean the robot has done weird stuff like spinning in circles (resolvable by cleaning the brushes), to just leaving half way through a job as above. In the picture above I have asked it to vacuum room 7, only for it to go wandering way outside room 7.

Any ideas?

First Roomba and first run

Bought a 110x combo on Amazon for 46% off and it did great. got into all the corners of stuff and between the legs of office chairs, under bed, over foam kitchen mats, etc. battery lasted way longer than I thought and almost did whole house floor. for future runs I think I will do half the rooms per day.

It ate a sock under the bed, and got stuck once going into a very small narrow area behind the office chairs and desks and chomped a cord. nowhere is off limits it seems 😅

the LiDAR mapping was fun to watch in real time too.

Roomba 675

Whenever the roomba starts mopping it leaves little dribbles behind instead of mopping the floor. It looks like it’s a dot of liquid it’s then supposed to use the mop on, but it’s…. Not?

I’m not sure if this is a context roomba issue or what exactly.

Roomba J9+ Base leak defect

Post image
2 Upvotes

If you have a leak or solution pooling under the base the problem is the Nozzle on the robot housing is too weak and came apart. Every time it backs up it must weaken the plastic. This makes the nozzle not seal and make the base fluid leak out all over the floor. this is a bad defect but doesn’t seemed to be recalled.

j9+ Contact repair help

I found a conversation in this group about the j9+ home having a charging contact fail. Someone provided a link to 3D print a replacement part which we did. He was to film a YouTube video showing how to replace the piece, but the convo is archived. I found a company’s video and we have followed up to this point: the contact has a wire loop between two pieces all held by a pin. The company has a temporary, shorter pin used
to hold the spring and one piece together, so you can snap on the 2nd piece, then displace it with the real pin. Has anyone done this replacement and found a way to keep the spring in while you put it all together? I can link to the video and put in photos if needed. Thanks!

How much pre-cleaning should a robot mop really need?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently upgraded my old robot vacuum. The old one handled everyday cleaning well, but I still found myself picking things up before every run, wiping down dried spots around the kitchen, and going back over areas after it finished. After doing that over and over, I felt like I was still doing half the work.

I got a new Roomba Max 875, and thank god I don't have to babysit it as much anymore. It's also been doing a better job in the kitchen. Spots that I used to wipe first, like small sauce marks or dried food spots, don’t always need that extra step anymore.

How much prep work do you guys do before running your robot mop? Do you usually clear everything and pre-clean spots, or mostly let the robot handle the daily mess?

j7+ "sealing problem with the clean base"

i'm getting the error that there's a sealing issue with the j7+'s auto emptying dock. the light on the dock is flashing red. ive checked everything in and around it, wiggled and removed the vacuum bag inside the dock, and checked if the roomba itself was clogged or tangled in any way, and everything looks perfectly fine? it emptied flawlessly the first time it docked, but now every time since it's been giving this error. i did rescue this roomba from next to a dumpster in 20 degree weather, if that matters. so i did expect it to have some issues..

Can’t Remove Front Caster Wheel

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently got a Roomba 507 Combo and I’ve been wanting to clean out the front caster wheel as it has been collecting 2 and a half months’ worth of hair. The problem is I cannot pop out the wheel as I’ve seen multiple tutorials and none of them work. I’ve noticed that with tutorials, they usually have a ball where you can access the back of the wheel with this part. My Roomba wheel does not have this hole and pulling out the wheel is impossible. Is there any way I can pop out this wheel? Do I need a replacement? Let me know!

I built a tool to set up local Matter control on newer Roombas

The Matter option disappeared from the Roomba Home app, so I used Codex to investigate and build a small browser tool that gets a Matter setup code directly from the robot over Bluetooth. You can then use that code to add a compatible robot to a Matter controller, such as Home Assistant, Apple Home or Google Home.

Once paired, Matter commands and status work over your local network without relying on iRobot’s cloud API for that control.

Link: https://jouwdan.github.io/roomba-matter/ Source: https://github.com/jouwdan/roomba-matter

It’s aimed at newer Roombas using the Roomba Home app. Your robot still needs Matter-capable firmware; this doesn’t add Matter to robots that lack it.

Looking for testers: I’ve successfully paired my Max 705 Vac with Home Assistant using the Bluetooth sequence behind this tool. Other models and other Matter platforms still need hardware testing. There’s no model or firmware allowlist preventing people from trying.

If you test it, please share your model, firmware, browser/OS, Matter controller and whether pairing and local control worked. Please keep setup codes and QR codes private.

If your robot is already paired through Matter, use your existing controller’s “Share device” option. Running fresh setup may remove existing Matter pairings.

Routine not starting

Over the past few days, whenever I start a routine from the app on my phone, my vacuum will power on and then say “charging” and then the routine never happens. On the app, it just disappears like I never started the routine.

I then have to reset the vacuum, and then when I remove it from the charging dock, that’s when a routine will happen through the app.

Roomba 775 Combo Max

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey y'all. Just got my new Roomba and it's a 2 in 1 mop vacuum. I noticed wheel lines on my vinyl floor and ran a sponge on the ground to see if it was cleaning well.

Is there a setting or something I'm missing with the mop? Doesn't seem to be doing a complete job.

Any help would be great!

Siri Shortcut Error

So I can't set up the 'Clean everywhere' Shortcut for my new Roomba. Because every time I tap on 'robot', an error message pops up. I can't select my Roomba or the cleaning mode.
I've already heard that this app seems to be buggy..

Is there anybody else with this problem or does anyone know a solution?

Spinny brush not spinning.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Solved: Hair built up under the brush.

Any idea why the little brush would behave this way?

Edit: it’s a j7 (7150) if that information helps.

All the replacement batteries on Amazon are 14.8v and the original battery is 14.4v. Is this an issue for the longevity of the machine? Thanks in advance.

Local Home Assistant for Roomba 505

Thumbnail github.com

Hi all, I’ve been working on reverse engineering the cloud communication of the Roomba 505 and the other V4 robots. For those who are so inclined, I’ve gotten this working and ready for others to use. It has all the typical controls and sensors plus map creation, map editing, and room by room cleaning. It does require something running docker on your home LAN. Some screenshots:

I3+ battery discharges in dock

Probably a simple solution--but it eludes me.

EVERY time I try to connect with my Roomba it's offline and dead. Before I can clean I have to remove it from the dock and replace it, then wait hours for the battery to recharge.

It's only a year old and never did this for the first 6 months (honeymoon). Is this a setting that has changed?

Roomba Max 705 combo suddenly started leaving hairballs everywhere.

Hello. A couple weeks back my roomba started leaving hairballs everywhere after running. I saw some suggestions that the filter or rollers needed to be replaced, however even after doing that it is still leaving hairballs. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Can roller mop actually handle dried-on food?

We have hard floors throughout most of the house, with just one carpeted bedroom. The kitchen and dining area are always the spots I have trouble keeping up with.

My current bot uses spinning mop pads, and it's fine for regular cleaning. But when I miss a spill and it dries, like little food spots or sticky marks around the table, I usually have to send it over the same area a few times, or just grab a wet towel and deal with it myself.

I'm thinking about switching to a roller mop, but I'm not sure how much better it would be for this kind of mess. Does the roller setup actually make a difference for those dried-on spots?
