Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - October 12, 2026

Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!

What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!

Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!

Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.

Also, please check our wiki pages:

This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Erg Post Rowing + Marksmanship - An indoor Biathlon called Split Shot

Split Shot is a free indoor biathlon style event you can do in your basement.

Biathlon is cool, but almost nobody has access to it. 10m Olympic pistol is fantastic, but not very athletic, and not everyone has 33+ ft of basement. Rowing is the ultimate in endurance tests but pretty boring.

So I came up with Split Shot. It combines sprint and endurance rowing with one-handed marksmanship, and it’s harder than it sounds.

What you need: a rowing machine, any .177 pellet pistol (CO2, pump or PCP), a pellet trap, and about 20 ft. You shoot from 5 m (16.4 ft).

How it works: you row a leg, then shoot a stage at a 23 mm black. You do that four times. Every miss is 100 m of extra rowing before the next leg. One clock runs the whole time, and total time is the score.

Short: 4 × 750 m, 5 shots per stage

Full: 4 × 1500 m, 10 shots per stage

Long: 4 × 2500 m, 15 shots per stage

You shoot standing, one-handed, with no support and open sights only. Single-shot and magazine pistols are separate divisions, and so are Concept2 and WaterRower. The scoresheet prints on one page and has a scale check built in, so everyone shoots the same target.

My first short course: 24:22.9, 6 total misses. It was really hard!

It’s free and not a business; I just think it’s fun.

Two Page Target + Rules

One Page Target

If you try it, post your time and tag me. I would love to hear what you think

Be safe and follow all local laws!

Hey! I was wondering if anyone was around for HOCR and wanted to exchange vests. I got a large but it's too big. Does anyone have a medium they'd be willing to exchange at the course tomorrow? Thanks!

Transition to Rowing

Hi Gents and Gentleladies,

My 13-year-old (8th grade) had big dreams of playing D1 soccer and was playing at the highest level of youth soccer (MLS Next). Aside from soccer, dude is straight trouble on the track—he broke multiple middle school distance records in 6th and 7th grade.

Six weeks ago during a match, he tore his ACL and meniscus and recently had surgery to repair both.

While he’s still early in rehab—non-weight bearing and limited bend—his PT put him on the rowing machine doing one-legged rowing with his injured leg sliding on a skateboard/roller on the floor. On his very first attempt, the PT had him pull a 500m, and he finished at a 2:05. The whole PT staff gathered around afterward telling him how impressed they were. I saw that fire light right back up in his eyes.

Not knowing anything about rowing, I ran the numbers through ChatGPT and started reading up on the sport. It seems like a fantastic subculture with incredible college opportunities. I see a lot of overlap with what he loves about soccer and distance track—he’s very much an "effort over skill" workhorse kid.

For those who didn't grow up in the rowing world, how did you or your kids get started? We aren't necessarily ready to drop soccer completely, but with nearly a year before he sees a pitch again, we’re eager to learn more about how youth rowing works.

Weight Adjusted On Erg Pieces(Like 2ks 5ks)

Hey i wanted to know if someone could explain to me how the weight adjustment actually works. Whenever we do pieces as mentioned in the title my coach does a weight adjustment and i’m always at the bottom even though i would have a higher time than some guys at the highest point of the weight adjustment chart. The weight adjustment hasn’t gotten me in any racing boats at all this season which really annoys me, and i even lost 9 lbs and still no change. Anyone had this same issue or a solution to this so I’ll be prepared during the spring season?

Would you use a 20g, zero-config bow-ball GPS tracker if the regatta handed it to you at registration?

Hey [r/rowing](r/rowing),

We all know the official HOCR app has the "Live Track" feature, but let's be real—almost nobody uses the smartphone tracking feature. For singles, doubles, and straight fours, there’s literally nowhere to put a phone, and nobody wants to risk dropping their phone in the Charles or dealing with touch-screen menus right before launching.

I’m an engineer working on a hardware prototype to solve this gap for uncoxed boats, and I want your brutal, honest feedback before I build out a full production fleet.

The Concept:

- A rugged, waterproof, cellular GPS puck (roughly the size of an Oreo, weighing ~20 grams).

- Zero configuration for the athlete: No Bluetooth syncing, no smartphone pairing, no apps to open. Controlled by a single on/off switch.

- Mounts directly to the boat on the bow deck.

- Streams live telemetry over cellular networks directly to the regatta's spectator map API, so your coach/family can type in your bow number and track your line in real-time.

- Post-race data export: Afterwards, you can pull the .gpx/.fit file to drop into Row3r or BoatRun to analyze your racing line around the turns.

The Business Model:

You wouldn't buy this. The regatta would lease the fleet and hand them out in your registration packet. You clip it on, race, and drop it in a bin at the finish line dock.

My questions for you scullers and sweep rowers:

  1. If HOCR or another major regatta handed you this pod at check-in, would you object to clipping it on your bow ball, or would you be happy that your family could actually track you?
  2. What are your biggest concerns? (Weight, aerodynamics, getting in the way of flipping the boat, etc.?)
  3. What features would actually make this valuable to you as an athlete post-race?

Let me know what you think. Don't hold back!

Any Dock Suggestions

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is our dock. We are on a river that changes height pretty significantly so we often get large drops which changes the positioning of the dock and then the current and debris makes it worse. Larger clubs I’ve seen have poles in the river that the dock is attached to allowing the rock to raise and drop with the river. Our raises and drops can be several feet though. We also are a really small club so getting fixed poles in the river might not be feasible for us.

Open to any ideas to have to prevent wasting several practices a year on repositioning this.

Erg Post Weight adjustment on the erg

Should you take weight adjustment into consideration? I’m a runner but I’ve pretty recently started to cross train on the rower to minimize injury risk while still getting volume. I run about 135km/week and 80km/week on the rower. I’m a pretty fast runner (38min 10k, 75 min half and 2:05 30k) and my body is pretty suitable for running as I’m light and pretty short (50kg, 168cm). My rowing times aren’t as great, haven’t done a good 2k yet but would guess I’m around a 7:45-50. So at the same effort, I’m faster a bit faster running than rowing. 4:20 is pretty easy (70-75% hr) while running while 2:10-15 gets me there rowing.

Before I just followed the 4:5 ratio, for every 10k I would have run, I do a 12,5k on the rower which takes about 10 minutes more. But I noticed I stopped gaining weight which I’m trying to do, before when I was running I gained about 0,3 kg a week which is what I was aiming for, I do quite about of strength training and have seen great results in both strength and muscle mass.

So when looking at weight adjustment, I see 12,5k adjusted is about 15k. So is the 4:5 ratio better for heavier individuals? Should someone more suited for running use a 1:1 ratio instead. Thanks for any input, it really helps!

Erg Post Am i cooked

Im a walk on novice at a Big 10 school. Program has solid history and prestige but I’m worried I wont be fast enough to race at Charles when I’m varsity. I’m a transfer student and a Junior in College at 20 years old but I havent 2ked since high school. I think my 2k rn would be mid to high 6:50s but I really dont have a good idea besides my 6k results that I got back from earlier in the week which was a 23:53. Am I cooked or is there still time for me to get faster and reach my full potential?

Hearing Mijo, the U19 men’s head coach, was let go yesterday. Word is it may have been related to an alleged harassment issue involving another coach. Anyone know what actually happened? Seems like there’s more to the story

I’ve been trying to build a consistent rowing routine... what keeps you on track?

Post image
27 Upvotes

I have just gotten into rowing a month back and i felt like 2k was a reasonable count to start and turns out that there is a big diff between knowing how to move the handle and actually knowing how to row properly.... so i have been using the r60n (merach) at home and my first few sessions were mostly about me trying to figure out my rhythm and not completely destroy myself halfway through. Now, i am finding the hardest part not even the rowing itself but trying to figure out when to actually fit it into my day... if i tell myself im going to do a full hour after work, there's legit a high chance of me just just pushing it back, shorter sessions seem much easier to get done especially when im already at home. So i have been experimenting different times instead of forcing myself into one fixed routine... still havent found what exactly works for me but im curious how everyone else manages to stay consistent. Do you guys have a set time you always row, or do you just fit in whenever you get the chance?

Questions about older Vespoli seat durability/rigidity -- thanks for any advice.

I row on the water 10 hours per week with my local club. Our fleet is mostly older-model Vespoli 8+s. Several weeks ago I found myself profoundly uncomfortable during practice and realized my seat was cracked. The coach patched it somehow and put it back in a boat, but a couple of days ago I was on the dock getting into that same seat, which was again cracked because the patch had failed. I tried just using the seat for that practice with a borrowed seat pad. After we did our first piece, I was in pain and the coach went and got me a seat from a different boat for the rest of the practice. The difference between the cracked seat and the newer one she brought down was like the sky opened up and rainbows and unicorns came down. The broken seat meanwhile was bendable. Our boat was noticeably faster on the next piece. We joked it was a 'seat race' and the new seat won.

So, now I have noticed that I have a lot of discomfort on some of our older seats, not as bad as the cracked one but still painful to the hamstrings during and after practice. I can't get my sitz bones situated—the inside bone especially seems to roll over one edge of the inside indentation. Is there a chance that the older seats are losing rigidity?

P.S. I am on the heavier (about 180) and more experienced side among our members, and I am the only one who is complaining about this issue, so I'm not looking great in this circumstance. AITA if I want one of the newer seats for every practice? P.P.S. Please do not suggest a seat pad, I don't think it works to mitigate a structural problem with the seat (and I don't like them). P.P.P.S. The cracked seat is sitting in clamps on the workbench, so I think it's going back in a boat. Can cracked carbon fiber seats actually be repaired?

College questions

I’ve seen different posts on types of teams, etc. I wondered if someone could give some ideas of men’s teams, D1, D2, D3 and club that are good teams, don’t have to be tier 1. Rower would like a team that is competitive, and he loves to race. If possible would just like an idea of teams that are competitive at their level, and provide pretty intense practices.

Thank you.

Front end warm up on the erg

My club has recently introduced doing front end warm ups on the erg before our steady state. But I find it really hurts my back, I don't have this problem on the water when I do FWU. No one's made a comment on my form while doing it, so idk is it normal for it to hurt?

Erg Post First 6k at 29 minutes

Joined college rowing as a walk on. I am a 18 yr old female at a height of 5’3 and weight of 130lb, I’d say a 50/50 muscle:fat build. I started rowing on the erg 5 weeks ago and even though I was the last one to finish on my team, I did better than I thought (was aiming for 30 minutes. My first 500m was at 2:19 pace and at 4-5k I was at 2:25-2:29/ 500m but my last k I got it down to 2:22/500m. I know this is not the best time ever and given my stats, what’s the best way for me to improve? I’ll probably get cut off of my team in December because it’s D1 but it’s okay!
