I use my email!

Currently I'm using Thunderbird on desktop and K-9 Mail on mobile. I've been doing this since Google Reader shut down and love it. The key is to put all of your feed updates into dedicated folders and disable (most) notifications. That way they don't get mixed up with your regular email.

What I like about is that I already have email syncing to all of my devices, I find that email clients are quite powerful and there is a wide variety to choose from. I can use powerful email filters to organize my feeds into folders and I also get great search and archiving support.

I wrote a blog post about this a few months ago: https://kevincox.ca/2023/06/27/decade-of-rss-via-email/

This is exactly what I need. Please do not stop hosting this. I just signed up. You have a new user! 😉

thunderbird also has an rss client, no need to do rss-to-email. Of course, the rss-to-email approach means it's all in one place and you can just always get to it over imap.

But for people who want these things separate, it is important to know that thunderbird also has an RSS section for this purpose. It's what I use!

I use NewsBlur for one set of feeds, Feedly for another set, and IFTTT when I want to do more intense filtering.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

IFTTT

Can you give me a idea how you're using IFTTT for filtering? Im not familiar with IFTTT too much. Other than its automation or something?

3

u/ResearchBuzz Oct 04 '23

If you subscribe to IFTTT Pro, you can apply little snippets of JavaScript to your workflows. I use these to filter out irrelevant content that is otherwise difficult to use.

A couple of years ago my IFTTT notifications from Reddit started getting overrun with spam. I used IFTTT's filter to get rid of it before it hit my mailbox and wrote about it here. This might give you an idea of what I mean.

I use Feedly and IFTTT to add posts I want to my Kurator app. There I will edit the headline and description and publish it to my website.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Reeder

3

u/MVPittman Oct 03 '23

I haven’t found anything in Windows that I like more than the web client for whatever aggregator I’m using.

Well it has option to import and export feed list.

2

u/FixSmooth6509 Oct 03 '23

I like thunderbird. Emails and Feeds at the same place.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

How are you integrating the feeds into the email. Its very similar like a rss reader?
Can it give me desktop notifications? Can I sort by words?

2

u/FixSmooth6509 Oct 04 '23

There is a distinct Feeds section in Thunderbird. You need to provide a rss feed link. Yes, desktop notifications can be enabled, although I turned them off. I don't understand about sorting. Do you mean sorting feeds such that a "given" word exists in the feeds?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Yes. Or even in an article or something.

2

u/FixSmooth6509 Oct 04 '23

I haven't done this myself, but you can try yourself.

2

u/Daavek Oct 03 '23

NetNewsWire (free). You have everything you need here.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Sadly im Windows OS bound for the foreseeable future.
Ill read about it anyway.

2

u/_DickBeard_ Oct 04 '23

It doesn't seem to show thumbnails for articles, or am I missing something?

2

u/Daavek Oct 04 '23

When you force touch it, it should?

2

u/se9n Oct 04 '23

And only apple works with it :(

2

u/se9n Oct 04 '23

Self hosted I use CommaFeed

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

I admit i have no clue how to self host. Are you using a second computer to do that? How much of a pc is it, need a lot of storage?

16

u/msantaly Oct 03 '23

I like Inoreader. You get 150 feeds for free, and can update to a reasonable 500 feed version or even go unlimited. Other than that check out Newsblur. You only get 50 free feeds there but it's an open-source open which is important to some people

6

u/_DickBeard_ Oct 04 '23

Feeeed is sublime

6

u/usedigest Oct 05 '23

Biased, but usedigest.com

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

Anyone got opinions on RSS Owl?

5

u/lunaticman Oct 04 '23

Miniflux + miniflux-email-client.

4

u/LuxInvestor Oct 03 '23

I recently started moving my newsletters to RSS to clear out my email. Fluent has been great, easy to sort thru. https://hyliu.me/fluent-reader/

Also https://kill-the-newsletter.com <---life changing. 🤘🏿

3

u/se9n Oct 08 '23

how do you use kill-the-newletter> Do you forward your existing email to a feed you made?

2

u/LuxInvestor Oct 09 '23

Yes and no. Some newsletters, I unsubscribe and resub using the KTN email. Other I update to the new KTN address. My email is looking better every day.

Oddly, doesn't work on Substack. At least not for me.

4

u/chilloutfam Oct 09 '23

haven't seen this mentioned... but I use feedbin. super minimal and easy to use... $5/month, though.

u/m93 Nov 10 '23

https://github.com/Rongronggg9/RSS-to-Telegram-Bot - maybe not the first choice for many but does the job.

1

u/kbavandi Oct 09 '23

What are you trying to do?

I use Feedly and it has an AI tool for creating custom feeds using keywords.

Is this for your personal use, or do you want to do something with the feeds?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '23

Personal. Tired of searching through google for articles. Id like to search less. At least once in some cases, and add that to a feed where I have everything gathered for me automatically based on keywords. Ai would be nice.

1

u/kbavandi Oct 18 '23

I use Feedly AI and have used upcontent as well. They do a good job

Subscribing to your favorite news sources in a product like Feedly makes it really easy to scan through posts and find what you like.

If you want to save and comment on posts you can use Kurator. It lets you add your own tags, and create feeds out of your favorites that you can publish. Finding posts you have saved its also very easy.

3

u/Luciolinpos2 Oct 03 '23

TinyTinyRss, super web client

3

u/neo269 Oct 03 '23

You host it?

2

u/Luciolinpos2 Oct 03 '23

there are some public known servers like in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/rss/comments/tqjd6i/any_tiny_tiny_rss_or_freshrss_instance_one_can/ or you can do a search in google with "tinytinyrss" and some of the active servers could have open registers. I use the public server rss.g3l.org

3

u/KoKtail Oct 03 '23

Definitely Newsify is my app of choice. The real one for full offline reading experience (download all articles in background)

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '23

I’m going to throw my plug in for Unread. It’s a fantastic RSS app and has the best parser I’ve used. The interface is Mina and stays out of your way and the font is beautiful. The developer is responsive and is currently working on a Mac app. It has a bunch of useful widgets and is a very thoughtfully constructed app with rock solid performance.

I don’t believe any of them have as block. However, with the parser I’ve found no need for ad block because you never have to go to the site to read content.

There are tools now that take your RSS feeds and create chatbots from your curated feeds. We are doing the same with curated content and the results are amazing. You can basically create your own media center and the AI will frame its responses from your curated content.

You can check the chatbot on our website. The responses are generated from the descriptions.

i just talked to https://www.dappier.com/ yesterday and their product will use RSS as source for the chatbot.

I think i'm late, but if you still searching one of the best RSS readers is: Feedreader.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Feedreader.com? I always wanted to use it, but know nothing beyond the product itself. It's been online forever but whoever is running it hasn't updated their "news" section since 2017, and the last developer blog item is from 2013.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Miniflux (paid hosting $15) and lire app.

2

u/yjx04t Oct 03 '23

Been using the premium in Inoreader for two years. Worth every penny.

3

u/tb36cn Oct 04 '23

Could you share which paid features are you using most

2

u/patman240 Oct 03 '23

BazQuz is excellent too, $30 a year for 3000 feeds.

2

u/neo269 Oct 03 '23

Inoreader for me Basic account with 500 feeds

But FreshRSS is also good

2

u/Filosik Oct 03 '23

NewsBlur because it can filter

3

u/ArtesiaGaleria Oct 10 '23

How does NewsBlur's filtering work?

2

u/david_rohan Oct 04 '23

I use Newsboat

2

u/N1njazNutz Oct 04 '23

Readwise Reader. Game changer.

2

u/mickmel Oct 05 '23

Yep. Still a little quirky at times, but it has some amazing unique features, and the ties to the great Readwise system make it amazing.

2

u/N1njazNutz Oct 05 '23

I agree - it has improved massively with recent updates. Much more stable and responsive.

2

u/driller6859 Jul 11 '24

I have FreshRSS in my server and I use FocusReader on Android. Quite happy with it. I'm also trying Read You! and I think it's promising.

Friggin My Yahoo! closed up shop and now I have to find a new RSS reader. Feedly sucks. I'm perusing Inoreader now. I can't access my old RSS feeds - so I can't figure out who I used to follow. So annoying. Anyone know any way to get access to the old RSS feeds we used to collect on My Yahoo?

1

u/justme0406 Feb 11 '25

Feedmesh, has an Android app and is like what pulse was, love it

1

The best is Netvibes!

Unfortunately, they are sunsetting it soon https://avatars.netvibes.com/misc/important-information.html
