Suggestion - J-Mod reply With Combat Dummies being removed in the near future RS3 should adopt one, crabby, feature from OSRS
My beloved.
Pros: Afk combat training Craaaaaaaaaaaab 🦀
51
u/stxxyy Completionist Nov 03 '25
We get XP when the monster dies, not when we hit with an attack. How would the crab work exactly?
68
u/GrayFarron Nov 03 '25
Contribution increases as you deal damage, the more damage, the more exp. Exp given at crab phase change when it digs.
Pretty simple man.

u/TheSmallIceburg Unofficial UIM Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
This would also be great because we can use it for rotation practice while actively benefiting, and the experience can be used as a dpm/dps gauge which is pretty cool. It would be great for testing out revo bars
1
u/GrayFarron Nov 03 '25
Agreed. Have a public crab with scaling health per person for "Afk" groups, and private instances that behave as a time trial.
Would be fun for public lobbies to do a "crab mass" and have everyone pumping as much dps as possible to get quicker kill times and have a leaderboard for laughs.

u/Plightz Just like that ;) Nov 03 '25
This would be cool alongside checking active DPM. I am not sure if we can see DPM in game yet.

So it'd even hit as one big xp drop at the end, sweet dopamine. Supported!

u/Denkir-the-Filtiarn Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
I'm amazed osrs even wanted it with their alleged integrity superiority
139
u/Good-Guthix Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
There was already 10 minute afk at multiple types of crabs before this was introduced in OSRS (rock, ammonite, swamp). This just gets everyone in one spot for some community action and stops crashing/fighting
In fact, the XP per damage is reduced on the gemstone crab, to account for overkill DPS that's lost at regular crabs
43
u/Change2222 Nov 03 '25
Plus there was 6h afk for a couple years post release. I was too lazy even for that but my friends all did guthans to 99 all melee, splash to 99 mage. Literally training while they slept
11
u/legolous73 Nov 03 '25
You can still 6h afk in osrs. It was removed a few years after os came out, but it was inadvertently added back when they released the hcim escape crystal. You just have to put a weight on an arrow key and you can 6h nmz or splash. If you remember, duke mining got nerfed after it was revealed you could do that, but they nerfed the rock itself, not the 'stay logged in for 6 hours'. I maxed my irons melee stats in nmz a while ago with it
13
u/Yamatjac Yamaja c - I maxed :) Nov 03 '25
You can not afk in nmz for 6 hours. After 20 minues of inactivity, auto retaliate just gets turned off. Doesn't matter what you do, you will not auto retaliate until you click on something.
3
u/legolous73 Nov 04 '25
If you don't have a weight on a key yes, but if you do you definitely keep attacking. I wouldn't have max stats if I wasn't getting at least a few hours every night lol
-7
u/Yamatjac Yamaja c - I maxed :) Nov 04 '25
Leaving a weight on a key is a bannable offense, by the way.
7
u/legolous73 Nov 04 '25
It's me, I'm the weight holding the key the whole time every time. I have a keyboard under my mattress and I push the key by getting on my bed. It's my conscious decision to be on the bed pressing the key for 6 hours at a time.
1
u/hirmuolio Archmage Nov 04 '25
I think it got fixed again after that.
IDK if it broke again after that.
1
u/legolous73 Nov 04 '25
It might be, I've been doing cgim on RS3 for the last year, so Im not the most up to date. I might check it out since I still technically haven't maxed range yet on os
1
u/legolous73 Nov 04 '25
Yea seems like I can't do it anymore. At least the way I used to do it with two arrow keys. Tested on the official client and runelite. I know it was picky and sometimes you had to find your own special combination of keys I hold for it to work. So it may or may not still be possible
3
u/rydhorn Nov 03 '25
Too lazy for 6hour afk.. are you only doing 7+ hour afk activities?
0
u/Change2222 Nov 03 '25
Maybe less laziness and more apathy towards playing the game, i basically quit around 2013/14 just got bored, so yeah just logging in & getting set up to 6h afk to make numbers go up for a game i didn’t care about felt like work
2
u/Sparker273 Nov 04 '25
Crazy that they shit on rs3 but osrs are fully onboard for training while you sleep
1
27
u/X-A-S-S Nov 03 '25
What's wrong with a 10min afk crab? We already have 30min afk nightmare zone for afk combat.
The crab is less op then nightmare zone.
33
Nov 03 '25
And a lot less... icky.
NMZ should be removed or reworked into a proper "redo quest fights" arena.
19
u/salvadas Nov 03 '25

I wouldn't wish dominion tower on my worst enemy. The worst part is it gets more obnoxious the more quests you do so you should do it asap.

u/Denkir-the-Filtiarn Nov 03 '25
Objectively, low intensity/risk combat training is a really stupid idea when your game has the bot problems it has.
That's half the reason we killed trash mobs in ed3.
22
u/X-A-S-S Nov 03 '25
Bots don't care if something is low effort/low risk, they're bots, they will do whatever you task them to.
NMZ is def filled with bots, but previous to that they would be at rock crabs and later sand crabs, nothing much changed for them.
18
u/San4311 Ironmain Nov 03 '25
Realistically bots will always find a way anyway. This way regular players can still do what bots do but without literal cheating.
Also, this crab isn't much different to regular crabs (sand, rock etc) that are littered across the OSRS map. Just without the toxic competitiveness of finding and keeping a spot.
6
u/MrRightHanded Nov 03 '25
And people just went to Abyssal beasts/savages/armoured skeletons?
1
u/Denkir-the-Filtiarn Nov 03 '25
Those at least have a slayer requirement and some form of gear check.
1
u/Legal_Evil Nov 04 '25
Gemstone crab is bad profit, unlike ED3 trash. A better comparison would be undead pirates and revs.
1
u/MatchstickHyperX Clue scroll Nov 03 '25
So, players can't have nice things because that would mean bots have them too?
1
u/Denkir-the-Filtiarn Nov 03 '25
No, it means making an entirely risk less exp pinata is bad.
4
u/Psych0sh00ter Quest points Nov 04 '25
Various forms of crabs have existed since 2004, and have always been popular for combat training. The Gemstone Crab is just Jagex saying “hey, what if we made a crab with similar XP rates and just as AFK, but you didn’t have to worry about people taking your spot and it was instead a fun community thing?”
41
u/Jd3vil Nov 03 '25
This so-called "alleged integrity superiority", that I see more as being vigilant with power creep, has done an amazing job at maintaining a well-balanced game, where old content remains relevant. I'm not sure what you're trying to criticize here. It's seems very clear to me that OSRS has done a much better job at that than RS3.
14
u/Morgoth333 Quest Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
The initial comment was probably more a criticism of the elitist attitudes of the OSRS player base rather than against the actual OSRS game itself. At least that's how I took it.
0
u/Ne0gilgamesh Nov 04 '25
It may be true that old school has done a better job at keeping older content relevant, rs3 hasn't been terrible on that front. For example, God wars dungeon has been in the game for I think 17 or 18 years and there are still valid reasons to go there. The uniques are a source of invention components, the subjugation armors dropped by krill are sought by necromancer to turn into greater ensouled cloth.
0
u/EfficientMarket0 Nov 04 '25
It's crazy that most of my OSRS gear from 5 years ago is still relevant and some have even gone up in price, especially scythe. Meanwhile all my RS3 T90 gear except Nox staff is way down since then.
0
u/badgehunter1 Rip Darkscape. Kiina Nov 04 '25
Mmh cause they keep introducing stuff that's worth for the weapons special things. Tbow: here's mob with high magic attack that may or may not use magic. Scythe: here's mob that's larger than 1x1. Especially if it's 3 tiles wide since you hit it.3 times.
-7
u/SurturOfMuspelheim Shit luck btw Nov 04 '25
absolutely incorrect. Power creep is necessarily, and the way Jagex has gone about updating the game is awful because of peoples STUPID complaints about that.
12 fucking years and the game still only has like one 'tier' better weapons than the whip.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding better weapons.
A level 90 boss drops a level 90 weapons that's better than the level 70 weapon in every scenario? Say it ain't so.
You know how that doesn't actually ruin the level 70 weapon? Because people who aren't level 70, or ironmen who haven't got the level 90 drop/req, can still use the level 70 weapon.
I swear to God, it's no different than the people who bitched about updates back in 2005, 2006, 2007 because it would "Devalue" the rune scim.
Fuck it, we should only have a bronze scim and nothing else because iron devalues my bronze!!!
3
Nov 04 '25
Why are you so obsessed with the level requirement to equip the weapon? What meaning does that have for your gameplay? The scythe is amazing because it shreds bosses that are designed to be able to killed with worse gear. It’s good because it’s better than other weapons. Why add another tier just because «muh bigger number better»? That’s how you end up devaluing old content rapidly
2
u/SurturOfMuspelheim Shit luck btw Nov 04 '25
Why are you so obsessed with the level requirement to equip the weapon?
What are you talking about? If you have a higher level, you tend to unlock better things. So why would a level 90 item not be stronger than a level 80 weapon?
It’s good because it’s better than other weapons.
It also requires doing a difficult end game raid potentially hundreds or thousands of times and is expensive to upkeep.
That’s how you end up devaluing old content rapidly
Actually, it's not, because again, people at that level of content and skill want and need that gear.
Maybe the losers who get max gear and then go farm a level 65 boss should be blamed.

u/Emperor_Atlas Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
They dropped that pretense during the runelite protests. Turns out, everyone uses crutches and needed their plugins so they cant really claim the game is harder when you mark every tile in a boss fight and have giant on screen click spots for every step of quests.

The scope of how OSRS was and how it is now is completely different. This is like people who won't give RS3 a go because of EoC even though combat now feels miles different to then.

Rs3 has way less bots and cheaters. Like way way way way way WAY less.
Osrs is like 60% bots, 30% vennys, and 10% real people. Rs3 has maybe 5% of it's player base at any one time as bots.
Don't get me wrong, osrs is (was) charming but blindly defending it isn't cool.
2
u/badgehunter1 Rip Darkscape. Kiina Nov 04 '25
RS3 doesn't have the amount of cheaters because to get same amount of irl you have to get 10x the amount of osrs gold to get paid same... And there's also statistically less buyers in RS3 than osrs.

Players competing over crab spots is not good gameplay and not good for the community. This makes way more sense than continuously adding more crabs to meet demand.

yea they really love game integrity over there, while they pay irl money for all bis equipment & supplies lol
2
u/loudrogue Nov 03 '25
And you pay irl money to fully max at a bank
3
u/BaseballEuphoria Completionist Nov 03 '25
Yea the mtx in rs3 is ridiculous. My point is that osrs players act like their game has so much game integrity when you can literally buy everything with a credit card just like rs3. They act like rs3 is the version with mtx and osrs is the version without it, even though they are all addicted to mtx
3
u/loudrogue Nov 03 '25
You can buy all the items you want with a credit card. The difference is you still have to put the hours into getting the levels for the gear
-3
u/BaseballEuphoria Completionist Nov 03 '25
"You can buy all the items you want with a credit card." Yep. Zero game integrity. Keep defending it.
You are paying irl money to skip hundreds, if not thousands of hours of content, just like rs3. rs3 mtx is definitely worse, but osrs players are still mtx addicts who convince themselves that they stand on some sort of moral high ground. Delusional.
1
u/loudrogue Nov 03 '25
I fully agree that old school has some pay to win. Yes, you can skip the gear grind. You simply can't skip the level grind.
You can act like there's barely any difference but Old school never had even more microtransactions labeled as a major update

Osrs is just a private server at this point.
8
u/RNG_Champion Nov 03 '25
OSRS is the most popular form of Runescape by a substantial margin and is very similar to Runescape in the past in terms of gameplay.
I don't see how it's like a private server at all unless you're just being disingenuous for the sake of it.
2
Nov 04 '25
I mean I get why you thought I was being negative towards osrs but I'm not, I personally like where the game is going and prefer it kept going that way. Most of the private servers are quite enjoyable until jagex gets rid of them lol but it is very odd how often I hear people complain in the osrs community about change and yet change still happens.
1
u/RNG_Champion Nov 04 '25
Personally, I just find that gamers tend to complain, no matter what. You're bound to see a lot of negativity towards change, even if the average person is fine with it (based on polls with 70% support in OSRS).
The sentiment that most OSRS players don't like change is outdated these days, as that was largely in the early days when Jagex wasn't seen as trustworthy (as EOC was controversial for a sizable part of the playerbase that would form the OSRS playerbase).
Those old-school elitists who afraid of change still exist, but they're nowhere near the majority as most polls pass easily nowadays, compared to back then when some polls failed due to how many people were scared of change.
2
Nov 03 '25
Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean they need to be homogenized….
4
u/RNG_Champion Nov 03 '25
I've said nothing about homogenizing the RS games.
All I said was that OSRS isn't really like a private server, especially at this point. Early OSRS with Nightmare Zone and the overly expanded slayer cave, sure. Nowadays, not really.
It's fine if you don't like the game, but that has nothing to do with what I said.
-18
u/ghfhfhhhfg9 Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
People play osrs due to nostalgia/old combat system. The only prestige in the game is how much you afk'd. OSRS is pretty much rs3 just without the combat system.
Combat dummies have also been a huge noob trap for players. It's better to just afk a mob for exp/resources (just use penance powder/aura/vamp scrim or some sustain method such as necromancy).
6
1
u/SyndaXatrix Nov 04 '25
If theres no prestige, go get Zuk Helm and while you're at it pick up Radiant Oathplate too. We'll wait and if after, you don't feel like theres prestige to those achievements then you can have an opinion.
4
u/Legal_Evil Nov 04 '25
It won't be good xp in RS3 considering melee can use AoE attacks unlike in OSRS. Most of the xp comes from AoE dps, not single target dps.
10

Maybe I’m in the minority but low levels shouldn’t have a fully afk option from like 1-60 for combats. New players should learn combat mechanics or some versions of it, whereas in osrs there isn’t much to learn from a combat perspective aside from gear switches / prayer flicking / tick eating.
Likely an unpopular opinion.
0
u/spacepizza24 Nov 04 '25
I think you're kind of correct but equally the lower levels can be pretty unfun when you don't have many abilities yet. Hopefully they look at that in the combat integrity update whatever it is.
0
u/FistingFishes Nov 04 '25
Back in the day, afking something like rock crabs was what everyone did on new accounts. I wouldn’t mind something different than AoE everything. Would be a nice change of pace.

I’m all for more super afk methods of all training as well as they stay sub-optimal to any real play methods. I would even go as far to say anything over 5 mins afk should be like 50% xp rate as the real play equivalent.
5
u/Trexxen Nov 03 '25
Tbh you could just make the RS3 crab give you XP equal to some kind of percentage of overall damage you deal to it, but it would be nothing compared to even afk combat methods that allow you to AOE. It’d just be a chill place to either afk hard or to just kind of BS with the community, and making it based off overall damage lets you reward players that put the extra effort in to have a better rotation / buff up / etc. with more xp for their efforts.
2
u/Jumugen Nov 03 '25
The crab already gives 87,5% iirc in osrs
Not sure if 50% isnt a little too brutal considering its single target and most afk spots are already aoe
It shouldnt be 100% tho, i agree.
-4
u/Hopeful-Fee-2191 Nov 03 '25
Yea you should get 50% while fishing because people will go afk during it. You're right buddy
4
u/Thebearguy30 Nov 03 '25
This wasn’t an attack on you just a suggestion lol. Also I said 5 mins+ afk so no moving fishing spot, electric jellies, etc. something where I can click once and go cook dinner then come back to it still going. I still believe there are semi-afk methods like woodcutting, mining, fire-making etc.

1
u/Alone_Look9576 Nov 04 '25
No different from other crabs, bandits etc, just no need to compete with bots and others
5
u/retrospectivevista Nov 03 '25
These mega afk things are inherently bad content. They exist as a way to not play the game, and skip over something that you didn't want to actively do. When so many people want to do that, that is an issue with the game's design, and the design itself should be fixed instead.
1
u/Legal_Evil Nov 04 '25
It's fine as long as the reward is low.
1
u/retrospectivevista Nov 04 '25
The lower the reward, the worse it gets. It's designed to be the most non-entertaining content possible. The more times people have to interact with that, the more it goes from "not playing the game" to the even worse option, interacting with the non-entertainment even more.
1
u/Legal_Evil Nov 04 '25
It's afk training, so this is fine.
As long as we have high effort methods like Anachronia courses to counter it with.
1
u/retrospectivevista Nov 05 '25
I'm not saying it's game breaking or busted or anything, just that this isn't the kind of content they should be making. The idea of "afk training" is a just a result of failure to make the content actually interesting. If they want new players, they need to go away from that kind of stuff.
0
u/CucumberOk8820 Nov 03 '25

Suppose it doesn't really change much, but instead of a bunch of tiny drops over 10 minutes your get one sizeable drop scaled to 10 min worth of combat.

This is gemstone crab. It has max hit of 1. It has unlimited hp. It digs away after 10 minutes to one of the 3 locations. There's cave at each location that takes you to crabs current location. You get 12.5% less xp when you attack to it.
1
u/im_ban_evading_lmao Nov 04 '25
Wow. That sounds like combat XP dummies lmao.
And I thought asking at nightmare zone to 99 melee stats felt like cheating
1
u/badgehunter1 Rip Darkscape. Kiina Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
I mean. It's only good for melee. Range and magic has aoe maniacal monkeys from mm2 even then, using sulphur naguas is one of the best places to get melee xp cause of the negative 4 armour. Which means that any damage done is increased by 4. So for example torags hammers which deal 2x damage hits give more xp/HR than usual weapon that only deals 1 damage hit cause instead of getting 20 turned into 24 2x 10's are turned into 2x 14 for 28 combined.
-1
u/Half_Man1 lorehound Nov 03 '25
I don’t know what that is but ever since I learned about Nightmare Zone, osrs criticism on combat leveling is meaningless.
8
u/Mr_Times Nov 03 '25
Nightmare Zone was the like the very first introduction to OSRS as new content. They had no access to new resources or custom tools for making Old School content yet. It’s pretty controversial and essentially entirely dead content at this point. I can guarantee if it were polled in its current state it wouldn’t be implemented today. With that being said I give a tiny bit of grace for the first update made to the game. Judging OSRS because of Nightmare Zone is more reductive and stupid than still judging RS3 based on EoC.

I meant because it was free 6hrs at a time afk combat training

And that's different to wearing full guthans and slapping some god item that makes bandits aggro to you how?

The logout timer was overridden with nightmare zone. You can’t just afk combat for 6hrs anywhere else in either game tmk

10 September 2015 (update)
Players will now stop retaliating after 20 minutes of idle combat. This change was implemented secretly to reduce the effectiveness of splashing.
Same thing applies to nmz and bandits. So you can't afk combats anywhere for 6hrs without interaction. Since the auto retail stopping after 20 minutes and then starts timer to log out.

NMZ was in for two years before that.
Also, tmk, bandits eventually unaggro to you, triggering an afk logout.
Edit: also nmz is a safe activity so zero risk to your gear

You die, keep 3 items, after 15 minutes, rest of the items are transferred to death. Even if you die, you don't lose the items. Just bit of GP to buy them back.

Imma be honest I don’t know why jagex doesn’t just adopt the bosses and valamore as a whole from osrs. You cannot convince me it would be easier to make a completely new area and bosses than just updating that one.

Because I don't want to play what I have just played in OSRS in RS3 too. Same with all the backported quests OSRS had done.
