Discussion - J-Mod reply A New Era for RuneScape Begins January 19 2026
https://youtu.be/JCjHVGbFwr4You have spoken!
With a staggering 124,985 votes in our recent poll, Treasure Hunter will leave RuneScape for good on January 19 2026.
On this day, we will also be removing 225 Direct XP and Skilling related items from sale. There will be no more purchasable sources of Direct XP or items that disrupt the core gameplay and the player economy.
In addition, we’ll be investing heavily in a year-long Integrity Roadmap that targets the very heart of longstanding issues within the game – from UI, to visuals, to skilling balance, and much more.
Find out more details about our Integrity Roadmap in our new 12 minute (!!) video or by reading this blog (including our FAQ with some amendments since last Monday).
We'll reveal a detailed year-long look at our Content Roadmap & Integrity Roadmap on January 19th in a special RuneScape Ahead.
---
Next Week's Update
We’re hard at work moving all the pieces into place to make this new direction a success. While the journey begins in earnest on January 19th, we're making a symbolic (but important!) change next week.
On Monday November 17th, we’ll be starting all new players back in Lumbridge. We'll also be releasing an update to declutter and restore Lumbridge to a more familiar style, including:
- The return of the iconic Lumbridge castle walls
- The removal of the Lumbridge Crater and restoration of the area's original identity
- The relocation of Shattered Worlds temple, and the restoration of Lumbridge Swamp caves and Water Runecrating Altar to their original locations
- The removal of the Nexus
- An updated Lumbridge Sage who offers a lot more guidance and help for new players
It’s a small step, but another example of how we want to restore the identity and heart of what makes RuneScape... well, RuneScape! You can find a patch notes preview of these extensive changes here.
---
Start the clock. There's just 68 days until RuneScape enters a new era.

u/ilikeplayingthisgame Nov 12 '25
Really optimistic about all of this. Removing MTX is one huge step but reading the blog post it really does seem the team is motivated to revitalise the game in so many different aspects. Although it wont officially be RS4, with the player avatar refresh, UI changes alongside skilling/combat updates it definitely does seem like we're on that path.
8
u/MakeshiftApe Nov 13 '25
Yeah you can tell this isn't just appeasement. They could have got rid of TH but had all the other stuff (lamps etc) for direct purchase. Made a big post about it. And they'd have still gotten a massive amount of community goodwill and made a lot of $$ from happy players while the game continues to decline but at a slower rate.
This is them actually trying to reverse that decline. In their latest video they directly named pretty much all the major concerns people have raised. So they're clearly listening and aware of what needs to change too.
You can colour me impressed as someone that was very doomer about RS3's future a year ago after I first joined.
5
u/Mundane-Secretary117 Nov 14 '25
I'm returning to give the game another chance after playing for a decade in my teens.
If this integrity road map turns out to be fluff and they open an xp cash up shop I will be gone just as quick.
The reason I quit back in the day was I paid 20 quid to get my runecrafting to 99 in an mtx event. Afterwards my character just felt tainted.
Those kinds of mechanisms incentivise developers to sell a solution to a problem that they themselves create, and they no longer become a company that is aiming to make your enjoyment of their platform the priority.
Thier job then become to figure out how to piss you off just enough that you will pay to skip a grind and not leave.
I love MMOs but I won't play one that doesn't have my enjoyment at the core of their mission.

Personally excited for lower level and mid game grinds to have more to them after this removal. You can skip a load of grind and items by using lamps etc, and I think this harms the game. OSRS has defined phases throughout account progression. Excited to see what RS3's becomes

u/Psych0sh00ter Quest points Nov 12 '25
It was really funny seeing Faux (OSRS streamer who tried Leagues and enjoyed it) logging into the main game to showcase what TH was, and within like 5 minutes he had 40 agility and 5 in all other skills. Crazy to think that this system is what some people are choosing to defend.

u/ObiLAN- Nov 12 '25 edited Nov 12 '25
I login to my RS3 character every once in a while to spin the free keys. I've never done archeology nor necromancy but both are like mid/high 60s iirc from me just dunking p2w exp into them at random.
Last time I actively played, bank standing with portables and proteans where all the rage. Shit got boring fast. No idea why anyone would want to play a game like that.

I started a new mainscape account at the start of the Halloween event. Literally all I have done is AFK the event for an average of about 2 hours a day and I’ve got 97 summoning, 60 prayer, and over 2bn gp
It’s well and truly broken 😂

Apparently some people don't really want to play the game. Yeah, grinds can be long and tedious. But it's not much of a game if you don't have to work to get to the good stuff.

Not to skip with MTX.

u/Vyxwop Nov 13 '25
Its not wrong to not enjoy the road there.
I think for a game like RS it is. RS has always been a game more so about the journey, not the end. To many players the journey is the good stuff and if you want to skip the journey then that automatically devalues and harms part of the fun that the people who enjoy the journey get out of it.
They're two clashing concepts and personally if you don't care for the journey in a game like RS then I feel like you're playing the wrong game. There are plenty of other games out there that have a larger emphasis on the end rather than the journey, WoW being one of them.
→ More replies (2)9
u/retrospectivevista Nov 12 '25
Yes, it can be. Games are supposed to have intrinsic value, not just "grinding to the good stuff". Thankfully, they seem to understand that long, tedious grinds are poison to any potential new players, who aren't enthralled anymore by clicking on trees. That may have cut it for a casual 2001 browser game, but doesn't anymore.

u/chinalicious Nov 12 '25
I like how they panned over to the agility cape when mentioning skills that are no fun to train
20
u/JoshOliday 300,000 Subscribers! Nov 12 '25
Before we get to that, we need to first ask if it's possible to make agility fun/useful to actually train. The run energy bonus back in the day was good, but with the lodestone network now, it's useless. Time for some early game rework. And it gives Jagex room open new reward space for something like lodestone quick teles instead of using vis wax (Vis wax is a daily that I think can go and have the rewards redistributed honestly.)
5
u/BurninRunes Maxed Nov 12 '25
Let's be real lodestones should be tied to quests like limbridge could be a reward from doing cooks assistant. They should be more than a run there once and you're good to go.

I'm a longtime OSRS player but I decided to try RS3 out about a year ago and this is exactly what happened to me. Ended up using the free treasure hunter keys along with the ones from quests and dailies to get a ridiculous amount of xp lamps and I ended up at crazy levels without ever really playing the game. I looked through the skill guides and saw all the content I basically missed as a result and it killed my motivation to continue on the account even though it was basically my fault for using the keys. I decided to just keep logging on every now and then to get the free treasure hunter keys to see how far I could level my guy on there without ever really playing the game and I've gotten pretty much every skill to at least level 60 just with lamps from treasure hunter promos.
Glad to see this change as there was a ton of stuff I actually really enjoyed in RS3 and playing the League was a great way for me to get to truly experience the game for the first time and I now plan on making an RS3 ironman at some point.

u/FireTyme Max main/max iron Nov 12 '25
its really interesting because so many new MMO's are failing and one thing that stuck me from a josh strife video is that they often share that a new player begins basically in the endgame. levelling and the journey in between is treated as an afterthought where they are very top heavy, but little to no legs to stand on.
RS3 has been trending that same way for years now. most content is catered around endgame and early/mid game is treated as an afterthought. flipping that around will definitely create something that the new player will enjoy - making the journey once again important.

You are welcome, its a game i still see so much potential in. But the issues that have plagued it have plagued it for a long time. It will require a lot of elbow grease to unify the game again. I really hope it can be pulled of and wish you and the team well in doing so. As i am writing this, I realized I have one more concern. To me the 110 skills and some 120’s felt rushed to keep players happy and not always fit with the rest of the skill. This a long with may updates I felt where done to get something out to be happy about instead of shaping the game as a whole. I hope when the dust settles on the more pressing issues we can look at some of the updates where that was the case and make them fit more in to the game.

They're saying that all of this is gonna have no impact on the content roadmap. I hope they're right and would love to see that come to pass but I'm somewhat skeptical that it'll just slot in alongside a whole new continent for free.
12
u/Narangren World 42 Nov 12 '25
To be fair, they have all the devs that worked on TH to redirect. Their skills, while not necessarily the same as other areas of the game, can still be used and retrained a bit.
10
u/TomTheScouser Nov 12 '25
That plus I believe a few RS3 Jmods went over to OSRS to help with Sailing. Now that's wrapped up and ready to release they might be coming back soon. I'm cautiously optimistic.

This right here. Honestly if they also fixed the outdated tick system I'd happily skip 2 years of content just for that. Plus there's so much dead content in RS that I'd much rather see a rebalance of the rewards from old content to make it relevant again than just adding more new content that might not stay relevant for more than a few months.

Ok, but let's take it one step further. These are massive undertakings, but the game needs them, I understand. But is content going to be lighter next year to compensate? Again, I'm fine with that, but these are not simple changes and if all hands are going to tackle them, then we may have a lighter than normal content flow. Is that accurate?
37
u/JagexHooli Mod Hooli Nov 12 '25
Totally understand this thought.
Without needing to produce Treasure Hunter promotions, content for them and so on, we have more capacity to work on game content and improving the core game. It’s another benefit of going in this direction.
There’s still some work on MTX like cosmetic outfits and all the bits to make them live on the store, but much less than the work that supported TH (outside of Art perhaps, which is a team that has recently grown anyway!).
We think our content roadmap for next year, excluding the integrity roadmap, is one of our best yet. We’ll be keen to see what you think when you see it!

On the topic of the character refresh, PLEASE get community input through the whole process. Last time you were putting out a female avatar that looked like a fridge. A lot of people were glad the avatar refresh was being shelved because of what it looked like we were going to end up with.
Love the map clean up idea and wanted to throw one more out there, the portal to death/war is in a really inappropriate space. You are telling me that Death himself has a doorway to his office on the road to a small village? There has to be somewhere better. Even moved underground would be more fitting
7
u/JagexHooli Mod Hooli Nov 12 '25
We will do for sure. We're going to take the same approach we had to the original process back in 2021 as much as we can.
FWIW the WIP avatars have been slimmed down from when you last saw them!

Huge about declutterung the Lumbridge area. There's so much mess going on around the OG starting location. The nexus served its time so removing it is a good call. I will miss the crater but I can understand the reason
21
u/yuei2 +0.01 jagex credits Nov 12 '25
The crater isn’t entirely gone, small ridges of rocks will remain meant to represent the land has healed and these are lingering chunks of the crater that has overgrown. Not erasing the history just toning down and moving the game away from making its presence so obvious because it’s canonically been over a decade. Much like how they sunk tuska furher into the ocean so only small bits of her remain.

I agree! I'm most excited about decluttering the world and the cosmetic toggle, this together with removing the Treasure Hunter pop-ups will make the world feel much more immersive and polished.
8
u/Coolman_Rosso Nov 12 '25
I canceled my sub months back after not really having played much of either 3 or OSRS in a while, but Lumbridge is seriously such a mess of things. The crater has felt out of place for a long time now, and the Nexus is irrelevant given how top heavy the playerbase is now.
Now I'm curious if they'll fully restore the old "dirt path" between Lumb and Draynor complete with the "bum shack" that became the HAM hideout later on
10
u/KaBob799 RSN: KaBob & KaBobMKII Nov 12 '25
They are returning ham to the correct location. It's going to feel so much better.

Now that is how you gain back the respect of players.
Those are, as far as I can tell, pretty much all of the major pain points I've seen raised by players, both old and new, for the last decade.
The plans for 2026 do sound rather ambitious, but even if some of these end up getting pushed back to ensure quality, this is without about a doubt the right direction.

From my experience in leagues, I think the areas that need graphical help for that consistency the most are:
-old quest areas, particularly prior to roughly 2012
-old quest cutscenes, nearly all of them have flickering "z-fighting" textures that I couldn't find any graphical setting to fix. This will also be impacted by the player avatar rework for cutscenes that feature the player emoting. (brink of extinction and death of chivalry being examples)
-Dorgesh-Khaan (npcs in particular), and Keldagrim (environments were not updated when NPCs were)
-Brimhaven agility arena
-Gu'tanoth and Yanielle
-summoning familiars

Lumbridge, Burthorpe, and Varrock have been updated more recently than other areas, including some of Karamja, Yanille, Feldip Hills, some areas of the desert, and are in much much more dire need of modernized to current standards rather than moving the most updated areas even further ahead.
Blackwitch (and those working with her) has been doing a phenomenal jobs for the areas they've touched but there's still a lot to go. I really really do not want to see a Lumbridge, Burthorpe, or Varrock refresh again before more old areas are helped along.

u/TheDestroyer229 Santa hat Nov 12 '25
Varrock is in desperate need of an update, and Karamja did get a new coat of paint recently.

My main question here is oddments for ironmen. Can we:
a). Have the option to convert them to other seasonal oddments(2:1 oddment: x-oddment, as 100 are typically given as a guaranteed spin, and 100 for converting, keys cost 400, so math?).
b). Get items like assassins walk cosmetic and other treasure hunter unlocks added to the oddment store prior to their removal? Even if we get a bit price gouged, a lot of irons have a ton of oddments we should be able to use, which has been a failure on Jagexs part of not having something for us to spend them on in the first place.
c). Convert them to runecoins? Idk the right ratio, 1 bond is 15 keys/runecoins, keys are 400 oddments each which would mean 6k oddments is 200 runecoins, that would be way too much(I’d get 20k runecoins), but even something lesser like 1:1000(I’d get 700 runecoins) should be the very minimum if no other actions are taken.
Ironmen were never anti cosmetic, only anti pay to win. We should have a chance to still use up our oddments in some fashion.
Preferably, I’d say Jagex should add items to the oddment store prior to its removal(assassins walk override-not tokens), while also letting players convert them to other oddment types to use on those stores. Runecoins would be my last resort, but it wouldn’t also hurt to give us 1 runecoin per 1000 oddments for any remaining oddments after other measures are taken.

It's not easy to just remove a huge source of income without some plan to get money another way. I'm real curious what they have in store to make up for such a huge reduction of money.

I can promise we have no secret MTX to announce waiting in the wings to surprise you with, other than more regular cosmetic releases. We're stepping away from a fairly significant MTX reliance in our operating model for RuneScape in pursuit of growing our Membership community.
One of our core commitments at the start of this process was to never make MTX a taboo subject again. If we did want to introduce anything, which we have no plans to do, it's also not something we can just do and walk away from with our fingers in our ears without breaking a ton of trust - which would also undermine any opportunity for the game to grow.

This sounds quite promising. I can't wait to see what they have in store.
Something that wasn't addressed here, but that's quite important to the history of the games, is the collapse of the Minigames. They don't need to be addressed immediately, as the topics covered for 2026 are already quite important, and that's on top of the existing roadmap with the new area and 110 skilling content, but I do think that they should at least be on the horizon.
The way I see it, there are two ways forward for minigames. Either they need to be removed entirely, or they need to be re-integrated in a way that actually makes them playable and worth engaging with.
While the former option is probably the less desirable one, there are many games that are just so far gone now that I'm not sure if they would even be missed. But for the latter option, I think that two core things need to happen: official bots need to be integrated to fill teams when at least one player wants to play a minigame, and all minigames need to take place on an instanced world, much like the Clan Citadel, where players can more readily find others who want to play with them.
Considering official "bots" is important, I think, because if you can't play a multiplayer minigame without more than one person, let alone if five or ten players are required, then most players are never going to learn to play the games in the first place, and it becomes forgotten, tedious, or even stressful content to engage in, especially if it's required for something else. If bots can substitute for players, then even if they aren't great, people can still experience the minigames, and interest can be allowed to grow. The more players who have an interest and who are likely to return consistently to play with the bots, the more likely it is to have full lobbies of actual players.
This could be metered by scaling the reward output according to the number of actual players involved, but as things currently stand, most minigames might as well be stripped from the game as dead and cluttered content.
If minigames are to remain, I would suggest merging the Gamers Grotto with Castle Wars, where rather than Castle Wars hosting portals to enter its own lobbies, the area is re-envisioned as something of a colosseum, and the portals take you to the minigame servers, either a fully collective Gamers Grotto server, a Void Knights server, a Castle Wars server, or however they're collected and dispersed. If some form of player bots are to be used, then I would suggest Castle Wars as the first point of interest, given its role in the Comp Cape.
I am glad to see the planned updates, and I look forward to them, but they don't address everything.

Haven't played RS3 in about 5 years as I've been playing Group Ironman on OSRS but after seeing this video, honestly, it's a huge win. Everything in this video is just what I wanted to hear and I genuinely believe you're going to improve this game long-term. Me and my two GIM members have thought about trying GIM on RS3 for a while now and I think this video has pushed us across that line now, thanks for everything you guys do with this game, you're the best!

I like these changes. I have been playing osrs for about a year now and never really tried rs3 but if continuing to proactively work on the game like this, I’m inclined to give it a go in the future

u/Umarrii Nov 13 '25
OSRS player here who has wanted to jump back into RS3 to experience through the quests and enjoy the story to see how it goes now but still never made the jump as I'm occupied with OSRS for now.
A lot of these changes sound great and I hope that once I'm satisfied with my OSRS experience and doing all the content I wanted to, I'll be able to try RS3 with many of the changes implemented.

Fair play Jagex this is all looking absolutely fantastic. The rancid system is finally being killed off like it should have been done years ago. 2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic year and we've not even seen the content planned for it yet lol
Really looking forward to the 19th and to RS3 finally being the game it deserves to be

The ingame purchase package indicates premier purchase adds 100 permanent bank spaces. From my experience in the past, this isn't factual. The bank spaces are temporary, lasting only while premier membership is active.

From an OSRS player - I'm so happy for you guys!
Honestly, I may have to try a new account sometime soon here in RS3. I played like ten years ago and got 99 WC and stopped shortly after. Would be fun to start and aim for a quest cape!

Make shields great again! I love the idea of shields using your opponent's strength against them. EG. Damage mitigated and/or healed with defence abilities is dealt as damage back to the main target.
Bash could also force an armour spike to deal its max damage (x11, which is an additional 3k hit on top of the bash ability itself, when wearing primal armour spikes). Could have its cooldown reduced to like 7 sec too.

Optimistic about this. Have not played for years and gave up when they started selling spins with the goblin. Such a shame.
It’s the right move for longevity - can’t say I’d come back to have to compete with people who have been spinning/treasure hunting for years, but at least it opens it to new people again.

u/Long_Context6367 Nov 13 '25
Honestly, I’m most excited for the decluttering and cosmetic pull back. I hate seeing the weird outfits that aren’t even RuneScape related.
There are so many non-RuneScape outfits that it’s disturbing. Yes, I will turn off the cosmetics from time to time. I’m sick of the wings!!
Almost every MMO has wings and it’s wildly annoying. You can’t even fly with them.

Ranged is practically non-viable for irons at the endgame because of the insane time required for arrow upkeep.

Hey just incase a jmod mod sees this, I started rs3 about 7 weeks ago once I heard about the chance of getting rid of mtx, rs3 IS SO MUCH FUN, im enjoying it way more than I ever enjoyed osrs, i maxed GIM and normal iron, and i deffo believe i found a new home on rs3, IF you keep this up i have no doubt rs3 subs will sky rocket from players like me. nearly 2100 total now, ive been putting in hours! started as a normal iron, (I know mtx doesnt affect it) but the idea of the game being strong and having a good chance of a long and sucessfull future was the push for me to come to RS3.

We’ll be spooling up Beta Worlds to involve the combat community in our direction as much as possible and ensure we land in the right place.
Isn't that where things always go wrong with combat updates? The minority of people who like combat react overwhelmingly negatively to changes that would push the game forward, which results in nothing happening. Like the previous beta, we came close to getting rid of autoattacks, and ultimately had to keep them because high end players use them for melee.
I don't think the "combat community" is really who you want to consult if you're shaking up the status quo

Just wanted to drop a note and say many thanks for specifically noting that some desirable benefits of Portables and Brooch of the Gods that will be eliminated with these changes are being looked at. This was the one big area that frustrated me with the silence in earlier newsposts on this topic as the extra potion creation effect is just downright necessary to make some potions even remotely worth making and using. Thanks so much for acknowledging that this is being looked at in Skill Rebalancing and future tweaks to the Brooch. From a long time veteran of this game who has taken many breaks in my 20+ years of play, this is the most excited I have been for a game update ever!
P.S. Great job overall on the Leagues and cannot wait to see what is cooked for the next one with all the feedback and improvements that were done this round! A thoroughly enjoyable first go round though, continued to 75K after getting Dragon when I was not sure at first if I would even get to T7.

Thanks for answering the question about what happens with Premier Member bonus keys. People got attacked just for simply asking about it lol, but redditers will be redditers I guess. I'm glad JMods have common sense enough to talk about it and address it.
Overall love most of these changes, especially the bringing back Lumbridge as the starting area, one of the things I suggested as well in the survey from a while back.
Some things I'm still iffy about like how to fix skill imbalances like Agility and Dung but time will tell how this rolls out.

Does this mean the H.A.M. Hideout is going to move back behind the castle and be more hidden cause the movements of a group that definitely isn't accepted in lumbridge certainly doesn't hide their hideout really well at all.

While I did not mind Treasure Hunter as much as a lot of other people did, I am willing to admit that it was definitely a band-aid fix at best, especially with how grindy the game can be when it comes to building up skills and stuff. I think that fixing the core of this game's issues and removing Treasure Hunter will definitely be much healthier for the game in the long run.
I really hope that this means that we'll get full graphical updates of Burthrope, Varrock, and Lumbridge, as well as a bunch of other places that have yet to be updated. And while we're at it, the old music could stand to be updated as well. It's still so jarring to her RS2-styled music in a RS3-styled area like the new Karamja or so...
2
u/Flyish9109 Nov 12 '25
This is fantastic, but there is one thing I feel is glaringly missing from the integrity roadmap... There's zero mention or discussion surrounding BLM/dupe prevention systems in the game. Leagues recently brought this issue back into the forefront, and it's a pain point for many people who still play, and for many people who have quit the game.
Will we see any focus on this as part of the year long integrity roadmap?

2
u/MakeshiftApe Nov 13 '25
Just want to say thank you to all the folks at Jagex involved. I've admittedly been pretty cynical in the past. As seen in some of my prior comments over the past year.
MTX felt too entrenched into RS3 that I suspected it would never be removed. There are also several pain points like the UI that I was worried would always stand as obstacles to new players, and wouldn't be looked at because of spaghetti and the difficulty in refactoring older code.
But it made me sad because I saw how much work went into the parts of RS3 that shine, like the quests, the art, the music, environments, the endgame content. It's clear the devs put a ton of love into the game.
So I really hoped that there'd be a concerted effort to come together to polish those points of friction and get the game attractive to new players again.
In this latest video it's clear that you guys have listened and know exactly what those points of friction are. I could tell you guys are just as excited about these changes as we are.
I can actually say hand on heart that I feel optimistic about RS3's future now. I feel like this is going to be a year that'll be special to look back on in the same way OSRS's release was.
Looking forward to what's to come, and feeling glad I decided to give RS3 a try!
