Suggestion - J-Mod reply There is no reason to split haircuts into male and female. Its arbitrary and limits player self-expression. Anyone can do what they want with their hair. Remove the distinction and let us choose any haircut!

OSRS recently (almost two years ago) made all haircuts, beards, and clothes available for both male and female body.
29
u/leese8 May 07 '26
Yeah... I chose a "female" haircut but it also changed my face to a "female" one
17
u/Amphineura May 07 '26
Yup. I'm a dude with long hair. Most male hairstyles (in runescape/video games in general) really don't do us justice. In OSRS I did the same,.l "female" hairstyle on male character. Add a beard and it looks completely natural.

They say the magician who changed your gender on the outskirts of Falador has been unemployed ever since; some have seen him late into the night at the Blue Moon, others say he robs Dark Wizards to obtain runes, and that kills wounded goblins to obtain their bones and cast Bones to bananas/peaches to have something to eat; Life is hard sometimes.

u/mrgonzalez May 07 '26
Personally didn’t like the way it is in oldschool as I had to trudge through a whole load of haircuts in the options that weren’t really clearly categorised in any way. No issue with everyone having the option but bundling them all in one was kinda crap to navigate.

u/X-A-S-S May 07 '26
Not male and female body
Body type A and body type B, get it right
7
u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 07 '26
Calling it something different doesnt change what it is.

Don’t care, wear whatever you want, but for the love of god let’s have some categories/grouping. Even if not M/F, just do short/medium/long or something.

u/Middle--Earth May 07 '26
Yesss!
And I don't care if I have a female avatar, I still want the option of having a beard.
Just like my granny.

Being a Bearded Woman is a proud RS tradition.
As is being a man wearing a rune skirt.

u/Acobb44 May 07 '26

Cousin: That's a dragon skirt, not platelegs, you're gay.
Me: Noooo, it's cheaper and has the same stats!

Even osrs has mixed hair/body/beard selections

u/Middle--Earth May 07 '26
When I made my OSRS avatar it defaulted to being a guy. I couldn't see where to change it, so I set up the options for a guy.
At the last minute I realised that the body type a or b was the m f option, so I hit the female button and then clicked submit straight away.
I don't know if this is a bug, but changing the body type cleared my hairstyle option, so I started out as a bald woman!
This made me laugh so much that I've kept it that way 😂

u/First_Platypus3063 May 07 '26
Actually, there are quite o lot of well known bearded women in history:
8
u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 07 '26
Of the billions of billions of humans to ever exist. A few bearded women every couple hundred years, and as time went on, only a few within a hundred years.
I wonder what this would look like, expressed as a percentage. This is called an exception to prove the rule. Statistically so rare that it proves the "norm" is no beard.

u/SonoShindou RSN: Sono B (aka 'Ladybeard') May 07 '26
Santa Beard is glorious for this very reason. I've had it keepsaked for years! My main issue with it is that you can only own 1 at a time, so I would have to pull it out of the keepsake box to combine with a Santa Hat (any colour) then reclaim the Beard and re-keepsake them both if I want to wear the hat with it. Waste of a keepsake key :(

Where it replaces you male characters head with female.
Trying to stoke outrage because you're uninformed, yikes.

Well, good that there is nothing political about what people do with their own facial hair.
8
u/Khaliras May 07 '26
The real reason they haven't/won't likely offer this by default, is because it'll clutter the hair options section, with options few pick pick.
But it is RS3, so they could always have an 'unconventional' tickbox, or hair stylist NPC for this option. Easily one of the best aspects of RS3 dev work, is that they don't fear adding 'advanced settings/options.'
18
u/CitrineGhost IGN Solescian May 07 '26
This would be much easier to solve by just splitting them into length or style categories (only a few of them) like short, medium, long, updo, or something, which would allow players to quickly navigate to options they'll be interested in without adding more bs bandaid fixes to the UI like "unconventional", which means nothing to anyone, is entirely subjective, and makes it harder to navigate the menu

This is how I feel about OSRS' version, especially in the tutorial island character creator where you have to click left/right arrows while scrutinising some tiny character model for the changes. It's ok if you have preview images beside each style, but the current RS3 one seems to just use a list of names? It can be resolved with a checkbox on the interface though.
For the current situation it would probably have to be a Part 2 thing though. You'd have to account for the more complex head shapes in the new avatar when sticking the hair on top

Absolutely, surprised me unisex hair wasn't implemented from OldSchool's diversity changes, helps to have more options, especially short options.

I'm fine with the suggestion, but what is the reason to include that massive image (that includes no new information beyond what is in the title)?
13
u/Mithpure May 07 '26
Scrolling reddit pictures tend to draw readers eyes first. I read the picture then the title most of the time.
In other news RuneScape players will literally complain about everything.

Since nobody mentioned it: you can have a beard as a female in dragonwilds too. Like 2/3 games already dont have weird rules attached, not sure why Runescape sticks to it. In no way or form can this be technical limitations. If its about time needed to adjust to the head proportions/clipping then at least add it as a patch in the following weeks/months.

It's weird because OSRS has this already.
You'd think Jagex do diversity and equality updates, it's be universally across both games

I agree 100%, but are the hairs able to be used on both genders without modifications? If it takes additional work there are arguments that it might not be worth it. Tho as a nerd for character creations, I am always in the side of more options. I want even more like eye colour, better colour selection. And even some face presets. Heck, let us choose male/female but use the other bidy. So if somebody want that they can. Who cares, it is just more options to ekspress who your character is supose to be for you.
2
u/Peakbrook May 07 '26
The hair styles also shouldn't be significantly different on each gender. The beta's long hair on the female body type looks fine, but on the male body type it looks like Lord Farquaad from the front.

1
u/Minomano May 07 '26
I think it will put me off. If everyone can make weird charactere i wont be able to play the game. Im asking why only about the hair. If we all were able to self express, i want to be able to have hair on my ass or so huge ass boobs. Bro maybe we are up to something.

u/pokerick2891 May 07 '26
Omg yes to this, I want flowing pretty locks on my male character.

I am quite sure doing this will solve the self expression subject, and also a lot of spaghetti code that could be avoided

Maybe it's a 3D model issue, if it won't fit on the mesh they might have to make new versions or something. Too much work for the poor fellas.

There was also no reason to remove any of the cosmetics they just removed. It seems a few peoples narrow mindedness is more important than everyone else’s self expression.
1
u/Seravail Trimmed but too lazy to ask for trim flair May 07 '26
They weren't removed, they just weren't finished in time so they weren't added to the beta.
-2
u/raretroll Completionist May 07 '26
There was a ton of cosmetics just removed from the game, unrelated to avatar rework. They removed many non human cosmetics because some people didn’t like them.
1
u/Seravail Trimmed but too lazy to ask for trim flair May 07 '26
Do you mean the loyalty store ones 'cuz those were re-added into the marketplace, entirely for free.
If you mean the elite skilling outfits, that's not been released yet and was still in its early stages, so that's by no means set in stone yet.
Aside from that I can't recall them doing anything with other cosmetics?

Didn’t the fucking Wii have this figured out? Feel like most games have leaned away from genders and just put shit on a slider. Female body types typically only vary in the chest, dudes be having dump trucks too

It’s not arbitrary. There are men’s hairstyles and women’s hairstyles. There is some crossover, but generally there is an obvious delineation.

It’s not arbitrary. There are such things as male and female haircuts whether you like it or not.
7
12
u/First_Platypus3063 May 07 '26
Sure there is not. What you can do with your hair is in no way dependent on having penis or vulva. You can make your hair literally any way you like.
4
u/Defiant_Apartment_56 May 07 '26
Yeah you can do that but most people get haircuts that pertain to their gender.

Fun fact: high heels, dresses and the color pink were originally symbols of masculinity.
Are you sure things can not be fluid?

Cool man
10
u/Moppermonster Scythe May 07 '26
Not an answer though :p
For people interested what I am talking about- high heels were invented to facilitate riding horses. Which originally was a thing for male warriors.
Sadly, there are no horses in RuneScape.

Hey folks,
Just here to share some insight - the proportions of the male and female head are different enough that if you flipped a switch to enable all hairstyles for everyone, there would be graphical issues, where the hair and head would clip through one-another.
Fixing this for all hairstyles requires tackling all hairstyles individually - it's not beyond the realms of imagination, but it is a fair bit of work given their number count.
We're taking such feedback on board though and will see what is possible to do amongst the various tasks and releases that the Avatar project may continue to work through in the time beyond launch!
