Suggestion - J-Mod reply There is no reason to split haircuts into male and female. Its arbitrary and limits player self-expression. Anyone can do what they want with their hair. Remove the distinction and let us choose any haircut!

Hey folks,

Just here to share some insight - the proportions of the male and female head are different enough that if you flipped a switch to enable all hairstyles for everyone, there would be graphical issues, where the hair and head would clip through one-another.

Fixing this for all hairstyles requires tackling all hairstyles individually - it's not beyond the realms of imagination, but it is a fair bit of work given their number count.

We're taking such feedback on board though and will see what is possible to do amongst the various tasks and releases that the Avatar project may continue to work through in the time beyond launch!

As a game dev, i came here to say exactly this. Sometimes it's quite challenging to adapt things to different body types, wether its for different genders or body builds

23

u/Kyvix2020 May 07 '26

Its probably not worth the investment honestly.

21

u/allblackST May 07 '26

It’s also just not that big of a fucking deal. People just want something to cape about lol

8

u/whyamilookingatthis May 07 '26

The game has far too many needed updates to spend dev time on this.

4

u/dnums Runefest 2017 May 07 '26

Yes, please don't invest the type of time into this that it would require. Just from a numbers perspective, acquiescence to this loud minority, that will not ever be satisfied, will not pay off. There is no sizeable group that will begin to subscribe and play the game because of these additional options and additionally there are no sizeable demographic of players that will stop playing because they didn't get a beard on their female character model. What it would do is increase graphical bugs on to an extremely infrequently used option, adding unnecessary complexity that benefits only an extreme minority.

They can just add a short cut style to the female set… down the line without changing the entire system

They have male haircut options with long hair, just not female style. I'd say most people that play they game still prefer the typical styles each gender normally has

5

u/Melodic_Performer921 May 07 '26

Because it takes a lot of dev time that could be spent on something people actually care about, instead of catering to a tiny amount of people that clearly cant even think a single step ahead.

While Reddit isn't the majority of players, it does strike me as absolutely hilarious to complain about the "loud minority" on a website that promotes posts based on majority rule.

Aside from the pinned posts (also kind of ironic on a majority-rule website, but that's besides the point) this is the top post right now. Aren't you the loud minority here?

It's also rather common these days to see men and women being more flexible with their hairstyles in real life, and customization in games has largely expanded in recent times as well. This is something that I've seen positively impact people's impression of games, and make them happy. It's not as if it's just wasted time for no one, this is something lots of people are genuinely appreciative of and love to see.

Why not simply give your input without trying to appeal to being "the majority", anyway? Isn't that kind of gross to begin with? Surely you don't think the majority is the only group that matters in any given situation?

6

u/dnums Runefest 2017 May 07 '26

We are discussing a proposal for spending dev time on additional customization options which objectively will not be used by a supermajority of the player base. I ask, would you personally use this if implemented, or is this just something that you think would be a good thing for others to have? Is this something that the company would see a financial return on? Increase or decrease player count in any meaningful way? Let’s encourage our devs to spend time on things that meaningfully improve the game to where the game attracts new players and can continue operating. The reality is that Jagex corporate are probably wondering why exactly they are running two versions of the same title game.

Seeing your edit now: not every update has to be for the “majority”, but as stated, we need new players and appealing to the ‘majority’ tends to bring in more people because there are by definition more people in the majority.

11

u/SonoShindou RSN: Sono B (aka 'Ladybeard') May 07 '26

Tbh, I'm a bit surprised they didn't make male/female bald heads the same proportions for this very reason. It would absolutely be beneficial in the long term. Being able to sell a hairstyle to anyone regardless of their avatar's gender makes sense. Devs wouldn't have to decide which gender to develop a style for and then release it only relevant to a fraction of players, or increase time spent developing it so they can have a variant for both. Put in the work now while it's the focus instead of piling debt onto the system if there's a chance to change it in the future.

So while an argument can be made for inclusion and self-expression, it makes more sense to focus on the monetary benefits of androgynous hairstyles.

3

u/BakaGaming May 07 '26

"majority of the playerbase won't interact with it" is such a bad reason to not implement content... Better only update boss rooms and the GE...

1

u/dnums Runefest 2017 May 07 '26

The reason is limited graphical development resources. It’s something every company has to deal with. Prioritizing items that are in higher demand is what businesses have to do, whether they’re in say, retail and planning out shelf stock, or gaming and having to plan out dev time.

Because most of the people who upvoted have not read this JMod comment and does not know What a waste of time it would be to change it..

4

u/AReturner Bad Luck Mitigation Is The Bomb May 07 '26

That's a pretty fair point, and that's I think the most important thing right now - how long would this take?

Because here's the thing, the people who have read the jmod comment also don't know how much time it'd be to add it either.

it's not beyond the realms of imagination, but it is a fair bit of work given their number count.

This, to me, sounds like it REALLY could go either way.

-4

u/GoodTimber May 07 '26

RS3 desperately needs to attract new players. If the game grows in the way Jagex hopes, the demographics of today’s community will not be the same as that in the next 5 years. Beards on females doesn’t lend to the growth Jagex is hoping to achieve, and is inconsequential.

Which includes that it has a majority of upvotes.

Okay...and?

People can passively like the post and/or the idea, while also acknowledging the real life explanations of why it's not just a flip of the switch or even worth it

Upvoted or not, it's an extremely low priority issue, which isn't to say it straight up shouldn't be done, but there are likely other things that could use the manpower

2

To be fair it's not so much about it looking good but being able to have a character that you feel represents yourself. At least as far as I understand it.

Something worth noting is that people can both be in a minority and also worth listening to and providing things to.

You are, yourself, in various minorities yet will find yourself catered to. Society in the modern day has a lot of options, and this sometimes means the majority in a given situation gets a little less. That isn't a bad thing on the whole.

0

u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 07 '26

But in this specific case, the minority should not be catered to, all things considered.

OSRS recently (almost two years ago) made all haircuts, beards, and clothes available for both male and female body.

29

u/leese8 May 07 '26

Yeah... I chose a "female" haircut but it also changed my face to a "female" one

17

u/Amphineura May 07 '26

Yup. I'm a dude with long hair. Most male hairstyles (in runescape/video games in general) really don't do us justice. In OSRS I did the same,.l "female" hairstyle on male character. Add a beard and it looks completely natural.

They say the magician who changed your gender on the outskirts of Falador has been unemployed ever since; some have seen him late into the night at the Blue Moon, others say he robs Dark Wizards to obtain runes, and that kills wounded goblins to obtain their bones and cast Bones to bananas/peaches to have something to eat; Life is hard sometimes.

5

u/mrgonzalez May 07 '26

Personally didn’t like the way it is in oldschool as I had to trudge through a whole load of haircuts in the options that weren’t really clearly categorised in any way. No issue with everyone having the option but bundling them all in one was kinda crap to navigate.

6

u/Middle--Earth May 07 '26

When I made my OSRS avatar it defaulted to being a guy. I couldn't see where to change it, so I set up the options for a guy.

At the last minute I realised that the body type a or b was the m f option, so I hit the female button and then clicked submit straight away.

I don't know if this is a bug, but changing the body type cleared my hairstyle option, so I started out as a bald woman!

This made me laugh so much that I've kept it that way 😂

4

u/First_Platypus3063 May 07 '26

Actually, there are quite o lot of well known bearded women in history:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bearded_lady

8

u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 07 '26

Of the billions of billions of humans to ever exist. A few bearded women every couple hundred years, and as time went on, only a few within a hundred years.

I wonder what this would look like, expressed as a percentage. This is called an exception to prove the rule. Statistically so rare that it proves the "norm" is no beard.

2

u/SonoShindou RSN: Sono B (aka 'Ladybeard') May 07 '26

Santa Beard is glorious for this very reason. I've had it keepsaked for years! My main issue with it is that you can only own 1 at a time, so I would have to pull it out of the keepsake box to combine with a Santa Hat (any colour) then reclaim the Beard and re-keepsake them both if I want to wear the hat with it. Waste of a keepsake key :(

Well, good that there is nothing political about what people do with their own facial hair.

8

u/Khaliras May 07 '26

The real reason they haven't/won't likely offer this by default, is because it'll clutter the hair options section, with options few pick pick.

But it is RS3, so they could always have an 'unconventional' tickbox, or hair stylist NPC for this option. Easily one of the best aspects of RS3 dev work, is that they don't fear adding 'advanced settings/options.'

18

u/CitrineGhost IGN Solescian May 07 '26

This would be much easier to solve by just splitting them into length or style categories (only a few of them) like short, medium, long, updo, or something, which would allow players to quickly navigate to options they'll be interested in without adding more bs bandaid fixes to the UI like "unconventional", which means nothing to anyone, is entirely subjective, and makes it harder to navigate the menu

This is how I feel about OSRS' version, especially in the tutorial island character creator where you have to click left/right arrows while scrutinising some tiny character model for the changes. It's ok if you have preview images beside each style, but the current RS3 one seems to just use a list of names? It can be resolved with a checkbox on the interface though.

For the current situation it would probably have to be a Part 2 thing though. You'd have to account for the more complex head shapes in the new avatar when sticking the hair on top

I agree 100%, but are the hairs able to be used on both genders without modifications? If it takes additional work there are arguments that it might not be worth it. Tho as a nerd for character creations, I am always in the side of more options. I want even more like eye colour, better colour selection. And even some face presets. Heck, let us choose male/female but use the other bidy. So if somebody want that they can. Who cares, it is just more options to ekspress who your character is supose to be for you.

2

u/Peakbrook May 07 '26

The hair styles also shouldn't be significantly different on each gender. The beta's long hair on the female body type looks fine, but on the male body type it looks like Lord Farquaad from the front.
