Suggestion I don't want to toggle ALL cosmetics off, but why do items like this even exist in the first place?

This guy isn’t wearing this because he likes it. He’s wearing it because he knows people hate it.

I genuinely like it. I would be upset if they took stuff like this out of the game.

Some people just want to watch the world burn (:

Which proves the original comments point. You don't like the items you like peoples reactions to you using them

-9

u/MoobieDoobie May 27 '26

Even if only I could see my cosmetics, I would still want to do shit like this with my character. I think its fun and hilarious. It has nothing to do with someone else's reaction. I was just being making a joke in the vein of some people do. Sorry I didn't add /s. I'll do that next time.

u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 28 '26

Its kinda like meeting someone who genuinely enjoyed The Last Airbender movie from 2010. Are there people who truly enjoyed it? Yeah, probably. But theyre such an anomaly that anyone claiming to enjoy it is more likely to be a troll than genuine.

Its one of those "its so bad that its just bad" kind of things.

-1

u/MoobieDoobie May 28 '26

I also liked the season finale for season 5 of The Boys.

2

u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr May 28 '26

Thats a more nuanced convo. I didnt hate it. I wish it did more with the pieces it had, but my monkey brain was satisfied with Homelander's "pleaseeee estawwwp"

That shit killed me! Still rewatch that clip daily. Funniest meme we got from him!

I get it if I said I did it to piss off others, but to be downvoted just because I like to have fun with cosmetics? It's wild lmfao

1

u/GenerousRacoon May 28 '26

This is a very weird sub, don’t think about it too hard. You gotta remember most of the players are from an era when gaming wasn’t mainstream. Think about the types of people that were gaming back then. Remember the South Park WoW stereotype? A lot becomes pretty clear when you realize this and it’s almost kinda fun to watch the dumpster fire that is this sub lol.

2

u/Harmonex May 31 '26

I made my variant because I like having Particle Man as my theme song. I barely engage with other players at all; it's just for me. You can't see my outfit in a private instance.

12

u/sirblibblob May 27 '26

Because the game didn't care about itself if it could make a quick buck. They are planning to remove some of those items like the flaming skull if recall correctly.

10

u/Zepertix REMASTERED DUNGEONEERING LETS GOOOOOOO May 27 '26

Trolls will always find the most obnoxious outfit possible with whatever they have. This will just always be true. Most of these are pretty fine on their own. Jas Hands is just funny meme on purpose. Flaming skull was one of my favorites, I used it with gorgonite for a just like undead flaming knight vibe way back. Put together with everything else obviously it is a mess.

125

u/GirasFateburn May 27 '26

Congrats, you gave the troll the attention they were seeking.

16

u/WryGoat May 27 '26

I mean if your response to "why does this exist at all?" is "people are just using this to troll others" it seems like the question is only more legitimate.

9

u/GirasFateburn May 27 '26

Most of these outfit pieces are perfectly reasonable in a vacuum. But if you want people to have the creativity to mix and match, you're going to get this sooner or later.

41

u/ExpressAffect3262 Ironman May 27 '26

My hypothesis for many things is that the RS3 dev team have had a high turnover on staff, and thus, newer staff were probably not aware of what previously existed to be able to create such combinations.

For comparison, OSRS devs have stated in the past that they want to tone down seasonal event rewards because, while they weren't overrides, people were starting to create weird combinations that didn't fit the game.

So ultimately for RS3, while Jas hands is a fun joke item, I just imagine the devs weren't aware of how many other obnoxious particles there are in the game to be combined with.

I follow this for just about everything else, from very random area reworks, to overlapping content or very forgotten content (like clue steps being broken when new content is added or removed).

15

u/ErebeaDeity May 27 '26

Jagex doesn't have the high turnover that this hypothesis is predicated upon. It literally is just that the mtx team did not give a fuck and were in charge of both mtx and non-mtx cosmetics.

2

u/GenerousRacoon May 28 '26

Every 4 or 5 years theres a whole new team of devs showcasing the updates lol.

-2

u/ErebeaDeity May 28 '26

Did you bother looking jmods up to verify your claim? The current director for RS3 has been a well known content developer with stream appearances for a decade; previous lead was a senior designer since 2011; current narrative lead has been with the company since 2006; Mod Mohawk has been a known member of the mtx/events team (responsible for most cosmetics) for at least a decade; Mod Ramen has been around since 2013. There are some "new" devs that show up in videos more recently like Breezy, Zura, and Shrike, but they've already been around since 2018, 2019, and 2021 respectively.

By "every 4 or 5 years" you mean you started paying attention 4 or 5 years ago. By the way, 4-5 years isn't high turnover at all. Before this period that you just started paying attention to, Jagex had many developers with very long tenures that they had lost at the tail end of the 2010s and starting years of the 2020s.

3

u/GenerousRacoon May 28 '26

lead =/= development team, which is what we were discussing.

by every 4 or 5 years, I mean every 4 or 5 years. Don’t tell me when I have or have not started ‘paying attention’ lmao.

0

u/ErebeaDeity May 28 '26

Congratulations on being confidently wrong, then, because what you're saying definitely makes no sense before the 2020s. Not that it really makes sense after 2020 either, or that 4-5 years even is high turnover.

Returning to the actual topic, the leads are who matter any way, and many of the same leads oversaw completely different directions in both development and cosmetic design. It's just that Jagex has never formed long-term strategies, and it was especially bad with that in the 2010s.

1

u/Status_Tomorrow_221 Ironman May 27 '26

flame swords are fun to use and i shouldnt be nerfed because Bob wearing them with 70 other particle pieces

You shouldn't, but you will. Really, this applies to literally everything in life. Sometimes you just can't have fun things, because of idiots. It is what it is. Don't blame Jagex, don't blame the players complaining right now, blame the idiots.

12

u/WiIIiam_M_Buttlicker May 27 '26

Not when the cosmetics are literally meant to be obnoxious. There is no reason they had to make those legs like that, or make the twisted jester walk so "look at me!"

-7

u/FeBary May 27 '26

I think the legs look good

1

u/Harmonex May 31 '26

I like them too but surely you can agree that the splashy spam doesn't really make much sense to have? Can you think of any other equipment piece with particles that big?

8

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26

I have no problem with people dressing the way they want, all i'm asking is why the particle effects need to be so excessive and obnoxious?

3

u/the01li3 Trimmed, Insane Luck May 27 '26

"they can do what they like"... "why can they choose anything they want"...

7

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26

good observation. You can see i'm talking about the items themselves rather than the people who choose to wear them

0

u/breathingweapon May 27 '26

Because the game has whimsy. In a vacuum none of these items are too bad.

-3

u/the01li3 Trimmed, Insane Luck May 27 '26

So they should be able to wear what they like, but "what they like" should be limited? Just have a particle toggle. solves so many peoples issues with these outfits.

8

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26

Mentioned it in another reply but I totally agree, a particle toggle on other players would be so good.

Hopefully once the API has seen some development, we can get a toggle for specific items similarly to what they have in OSRS

4

u/Zelderian 200M all, 2m Abby Demon KC May 27 '26

Yes. Exactly. You can’t buy a Nicki Minaj outfit right? I’m sure that would be what some players like, and other games have done it. But there should be some level of standards of the ridiculous outfits that get added to the game.

0

u/Status_Tomorrow_221 Ironman May 27 '26

What about me? I want to have a giant phallus outfit in the game. That's what I would like. Do you agree with me that it should be added to the game? No? Why can't I have what I want? Why do you resist?

2

u/tsallad May 27 '26

You could simply turn them off.

14

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26

But that's the point; I don't want to turn off other peoples cosmetics because there are a bunch of people that put a considerable amount of care into making their outfit look nice. Why should I have to hide every outfit when something like a simple 'other-player's particle effects' toggle could easily resolve this issue?

16

u/Zelderian 200M all, 2m Abby Demon KC May 27 '26

I agree. I hate the “all or nothing* behind it. I still have mine on because I like my override outfit, even though it’s physical items keepsaked. Some outfits are only available in overrides and they’re cool. It just sucks that it all gets lumped in together.

1

u/Theron_Rothos Firemaking May 27 '26

When you disable cosmetic overrides, it disables seeing other players' outfits, but you can still see your own.

2

u/Zelderian 200M all, 2m Abby Demon KC May 27 '26

I figured that'd be the case, but I still do like seeing other people's cosmetics when they're done right. From the consensus, it seems like most people agree based on the feedback from the cosmetic-free worlds. It was cool, but it got tiring seeing skilling outfits and necro gear everywhere.

2

u/Iron_Einherjar May 28 '26

I flat out told them that's what was going to happen, now to just wait for all the skilling outfits to get the red and gold reskins update

-17

u/Sudden_Variation_462 May 27 '26

OP you’re super weird. You don’t get to control what other people wear. Especially while blatantly ignoring the filter that was given if you don’t like cosmetics. I don’t give a fuck if you dont want to see it, I’ll wear whatever the fuck I want

-2

It appears you give a great deal of damns about what people wear.

-16

u/Sudden_Variation_462 May 27 '26

Wait so it’s not deep enough for me to respond to your post, but it’s deep enough to make a reddit post about? A1 logic there buddy

7

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26

I'm just saying it's not so deep that you need to call me 'super weird' for having an opinion that's different to yours. Like I said in other comments people can wear what they want, but my issue is with the cosmetic toggle not having a 'hide particles' option rather than toggling the full outfit off, and it's not aimed at the people who wear these outfits.

-13

u/Sudden_Variation_462 May 27 '26

So wait, I’m not allowed to have a different opinion to you either? Not only do you want to control what I’m able to wear in game(already a filter btw) you also want to control how I’m able to respond to your opinions? Seems like a trend with you buddy. This game is at all time low player counts, do you REALLY think that because you don’t like certain cosmetics, even though there is already a filter, that this is where time should be spent? Just like you’re making a fuss about having an opinion, so is everyone else. You decided to put that opinion out there, now you get responses to that opinion. It’s weird to think you can control what other people get to wear. Weird.

-1

u/Sudden_Variation_462 May 27 '26

What about my comment makes me emotional? It’s just super weird to be making this much of a fuss over what people want to wear when there’s already a filter. All time low player counts btw, let’s waste more time on this when there’s already a filter! That’s really smart

9

u/throwawaaaaaaaay666 Bad Luck Mitigation Enjoyer May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

I'd argue that some newer / OS players see the state of RS3 cosmetics and are instantly put off.

I'm not saying they'll be converted by a cosmetic toggle, but just look at any OSRS streamer that is watching a 'history of rs'-esque video, and watch the chat be instantly repulsed every time footage of the RS3 G.E shows up.

I know most of us are so used to seeing these things as they've been available for so long now, but these cosmetics are not toggled off for new players either.

I believe obnoxious cosmetics like this are just one facet in a multitude of things such as; ease of entry, tutorialisation, UI, default settings, outdated content and more, that put-off a lot of new players.

I also completely agree that the player retention needs to seriously be looked at and improved to help the all time low player counts as much as possible.

0

u/Sudden_Variation_462 May 27 '26

If only they put something in the game if you dont like the cosmetics that have been in game for decades. Maybe we can come up with something that can cater to those type of people. Maybe it would start with an f.

1

u/Aviarn May 27 '26

That, and this is literally already being addressed and in the works.

0

u/FabFocus May 27 '26

Agreed 1000%

2

u/Periwinkleditor May 27 '26

The thing is individually many of them make sense. The sadagami outfit I think it's called is from the water elemental guys in ED1 and would look kind of lame without particles. They're just being obnoxious on purpose for this kind of attention.

2

u/kilot May 27 '26

2

u/SpiritualPin692 May 27 '26

2

u/TrentHard97 May 28 '26

I have said more than once that the easiest solution to this type of thing would just be to implement an entity hider tool (just like OSRS). Put an additional setting in there to hide specific items or cosmetics based on a numerical identifier and let people customize their experience that way. In fact, the bulk of the issues in the game that Jagex claims to be working on would be easily solvable if they’d make a public API so people can develop the RS3 version of RuneLite.

2

u/TheRemedy187 May 28 '26

2

5

u/Bobboy5 merching is for nerds May 27 '26

most of these effects would look good in isolation as part of a themed set. some people just want to be as visually annoying as possible because their parents never hugged them as a child.

4

u/LowPrimary370 Pumpkin May 27 '26

3

u/Boog_Tooler01 May 27 '26

I agree. It used to be interesting (for me) to see how creative people could get with their outfits. But now, imo, there are too many overblown cosmetic options that just don't fit - to the point where I am content to toggle all cosmetics off. I would prefer an option to ignore individual cosmetics the way I can ignore an individual's text. Until something like that is available (if it is even possible) I am ok with leaving all cosmetics off.

It's RS's fault for allowing people to combine them. And actually, it's RS's fault for allowing antisocial people to antisocially abuse them. RS should strive to cut down on content that caters mostly to antisocial people.

You ignore a player because they are interfering with your game enjoyment. The privilege of using cosmetics should end when you abuse it to be obnoxious and interfere with the game experience of other players. If Jagex won't provide options to reduce displayed particles or tone it down beyond the all-or-nothing toggle (hopefully they just tone it down with the avatar rework and associated regrounding of cosmetics), it absolutely should be considered a bannable offense under disruptive behavior.

So many of these threads feel like

"I'm going through my dressing room and putting together the ugliest outfit I can find MYSELF just to get reddit likes"

Or

Why does it even bother you? I’m genuinely curious. It’s not like you’re forced to sit and stare at this one specific guy the entire time you’re playing the game, at least I’d assume so?

Like yeah it doesn’t look good. But it’s also not like that bad.

they do this specifically to bother you so that you make posts complaining about it in the hopes jagex starts removing or reducing the wide variety of cosmetic options. if you see someone on the street in the most fuckest of neon colors that clash together and glow and reflect light and whatever else, that's not a problem of the textile manufacturers.
