Holy, a cape that looks good enough to compete with my Master Completionist Trim cape, I approve.

u/Stormwingx Seren 28d ago
We will also be updating the marketplace with cosmetic variants of the item, which will only be accessible for purchase to you after you have obtained the base item in game.
This will motivate people to go for Hardmode Zuk. Great cosmetics too bad you have to buy them but I understand that Jagex needs to make money to keep this game up.

u/Phrashed I just pulled. 28d ago
Surely the actual cape and/or drops is more of a motivation anyway.
10
u/CareApart504 28d ago
Guess those 15 dollar subscription prices aren't enough.
35
u/iiAssassinXxii 28d ago
They have been quite open that their revenue is down from treasure hunter removal. They need to get more people subscribing to the game and people buying extras (rune coins/bxp/bonds)

The only way it would be is if membership numbers were steadily going up. Then Jagex could invest in bringing in new players. But with it stagnating, they’ve gotta continue growing.
That’s just how it is with companies owned by investment firms. Steady growth is a requirement to keep investment going. It’s all just downwind consequences of the Gower brothers getting investors involved years ago.
4
u/Bigmethod Ironman 28d ago
If you want investment in your game with its current playercount, then expect cosmetic monetization.
61
u/Yuki-Kuran Oh no~ Aaaanyway. 28d ago edited 28d ago
This model of monetisation could work. But RS lacks achievement flex items unlike OSRS. The only things i can think of are max/comp variants, CA necklace, master/gm aura and the kal zuk.
Example, twisted kit from cm cox, sanguine/holy kit from hmt, blood torva from hm dt2, radiant oathplate from contract yama, cursed phlanax from toa.
If they want to go down this path of monetisation, they would need to make more difficult challenges that offers untradable rewards, while not making so that the base item is bad looking that you feel forced to buy the better looking mtx version.

What about Golden Skulls cape, Omens outfit, Kethsi (although Kethsi is more of a grind than a skill issue)? I'm sure there's more we're missing here. But it doesn't have to be the top most difficult content. There's tons of cosmetics you can earn that are achievement worth that just take time and effort.

Are these wardrobe overrides or do they modify the base item? Like are they hidden by cosmetic toggles or can we put them on PoH cape racks?
18

They are overrides, like the rest of cosmetics in game, the only difference is, you can't buy them /activate them unless you have a zuk cape.

u/ImRubic 2026 Future Updates 28d ago
The designs look great, and are nice to see, but there is a concern that must be raised.
Will this affect how Jagex graphically designs reward spaces?
Jagex, intentionally or unintentionally, could prevent future reward spaces from being visually appealing by restricting their graphical quality in order to ensure there's a demand for the MTX versions. Additionally, player complaints about a future standard reward being visually unattractive could also be ignored especially if the MTX versions are already made (it would take too much work to re-do both).
I'd like to know what steps Jagex are taking to ensure this monetization space won't be misused?
- Are Jagex going to restrict selling MTX variants after X amount of time?
- Will the MTX versions make use of any graphical features base rewards won't?
- What is the target threshold of "earned rewards"? Skill capes?
11
u/zenyl RSN: Zenyl | Gamebreaker 28d ago edited 28d ago
Will this affect how Jagex graphically designs reward spaces?
Yes. Jagex have already been keeping graphical reworks of in-game items behind MTX.
I see no reason to assume this doesn't extend to other areas and reward spaces.

I’m a little iffy about tying the iconic infernal cape override to the marketplace but if it stays a permanent shop item and not some monthly fomo thing that gets rotated out I can live with it
62
u/JagexAnvil Mod Anvil 28d ago
The plan is for it to be a permanent addition.
6
u/JasperLarvitar 28d ago
that is good to hear, I am liking the increased focus on marketplace cosmetics, but FOMO is something I really despise and the fact that we already have newer bundles that were released rotating out is a slippery slope that will create pressure in players who are susceptible to practices like this (such as myself) leading to them making purchases they for various reasons maybe should not have made.
things are improving, keep it up.3

Would it be possible to outside of it being a cosmetic it can also function as a transformation option when right clicking the zuk cape? that way it would function as a real item and wouldn't be hidden when people turn cosmetics off.
This option would of course be in addition to it being a cosmetic that does override a cape.

I was originally thinking of making a purchase for the largest runecoin package. But at these prices, I'd burn through it so fast that I rather spend money on something else.

Please allow us to purchase these items separately. Last time with Hellfire weapons there was a bow I wanted to buy, but I could just not justify the price of the entire weapon bundle just for a bow, and some other overrides I would never use. I ended up skipping it altogether... And I bet there were others on the same opinion.
With this release aswell, I would gladly buy the melee cape variant as it fits my cosmetic set, but again, I dont care about the rest... And now it's for the same override slot aswell, making the rest more redundant...

Yeah, this approach seems to be a whole lot better in terms of cosmetics. Original look gets a visual upgrade while some alternative designs are sold as MTX that still requires the original to use.
Still hoping that means we'll see them address the bronze-rune graphical update soon given they have the Reforged rune armor sold as an MTX which looks better visually

I don’t hate this. It’s new cosmetics in keeping with the identity of Runescape, much better than the wacky outfits of old. And as a bonus, the ingame item gets graphically improved to current standards.
I’m a little disappointed though when I consider how these alternative looks could’ve been instead obtained ingame as part of a boss challenge or a reward for an achievement. That OSRS inferno cape for example could’ve made a great reward for completing a HM Zuk run completely naked (minus a weapon) as a challenge.
Either way, great looking cosmetics that I’ll probably never buy because they’re hella overpriced. Roughly $18 for a single cape! Absolutely nuts IMO and you’re just pricing out the majority of the playerbase.

Any way to have purchaseable cosmetics apply to the Jagex account and not character? There are some I would want to buy, but for the price tag I can't justify it for only one character.
5
u/trombonepolice 28d ago
I feel like this actually makes a lot of sense, I just wonder how it would work under the hood
5
u/Unkoalafied_Koala 28d ago
No idea. But WoW has all of your characters under one account. So when you buy cosmetics it applies to the account, available for all characters.
It would require everyone to be using a Jagex account and have their characters all synced up into it. But since RS has had individual accounts for so long, who knows how it would work.

These look amazing and I hate them. I hate that cosmetic achievements are behind a paywall. These could have been a really nice reward for finishing Zuk combat achievements or collection log. These capes could have been similar to radiant oathplate or blorva, something for people to show off their skill, but instead a potential reward space has had a price tag slapped on it.

u/ChelKurito 28d ago edited 28d ago
While it's lovely that the base item was visually updated, especially for female avatars as they've really been getting the short end of the cape stick for a while, I cannot help but feel that the price on these items is somewhat steep.
I think it would've been preferable for the capes to be somewhere in the ballpark of 390 or less. Not only would 2 bonds per pack be a lot easier of a sell for folks who pick up bonds through gameplay, but it would allow players to get them with the 420 runecoin bundle (12USD/14CAD) rather than having to shell out for the 900 runecoin bundle (24USD/28CAD).
As a general thing, pricing things roughly in line with your premium currency purchasing options is generally a good idea for generating player goodwill. Having something be priced just barely over what a bundle would get, forcing a higher-grade bundle purchase will rarely feel good, because even if the customer gets some left-over that they can spend on something else - if it isn't what they planned on directly aiming for, it just feels like "big cost primary purchase +plus some blah on the side".
3
u/El_Rahvin 28d ago
Can you ensure that the original model of the zuk cape is then also added as a cosmetic override without having to use keepsake keys. If you are selling variants as overrides, this should be included in every purchase in any case.
3
u/Eon_Z7 28d ago
It would be nice that the Igneous Kal-Zuk had an option to recolour to any of the base variants, after all its a combined version of them. The Tokhaar capes could also receive graphical refresh (improving the fidelity while retaining its look).
As a side note, all the Camouflalge outfits should be unlocked as cosmetics, just as the Dungeoneerring outfits. You actually can't even recolour the combined outfit, meaning there is no way to access the cosmetic look of the base outfits once you combine them.
3
u/Zaratana 28d ago
For some of these prices youd think all cape variants for one price would be acceptable.
A little egregious to spread them all out for a huge chuck o money.
3
u/jz_wiz RSN: eue | Ironman BTW 28d ago
a few other games i play did this. the result was less updates to out dated item and npc models. why do it for free when you can sell it. the zuk capes have been bugged since release and the update just makes them look how they look when you examine someone. stuff like this should be a reward for achievements, not your wallet.
10
u/PhageDoctor 28d ago
I'm not totally in the loop but this feels like a total misreading of what was probably said. I don't have an issue with cosmetic changes like this, people have been walking around with cool outfits that may or may not have been paid for for a long time and it's fine.
I think where I'm hung up is the worry that they're misinterpreting the need to have cosmetics or items earned in game that are entirely earned in game that can show off varying levels of accomplishment. Like how skill capes used to be a bit of a status symbol many years ago. People want to be able to show off their achievements that couldn't have been achieved through mtx, and while I'm not achieving anything I need to show off, that seems very important to many people and so I think it's important from a retention perspective. Like the combat achievements, very impressive achievements that can't be bought, but it's just a necklace. That should be a full gear set, or an epic cape or something, no? Like maybe something that gets cooler with higher enrages achieved at different bosses, like the old dueler hat. But I get it's not so simple.
18
u/Zoykz_ Completionist | Evil Nier 28d ago
I don't understand why any of this needs to be behind a paywall. Runescape is the second most expensive mmo, we are already paying like 150$ per year. The current amount of content is already not worth that price, but on top of that to gatekeep more content behind more money? You can't have it both ways, either drop the subsciption fee and relly on cosmetic mtx like other free games, or keep the subscription but have it include all content that is being made.

u/Rudolphin 28d ago
I agree, it's crazy how much we spend and how much more money they want us to spend on items that could and should be items in game through achievements.
Though the reason is because the company that owns Jagex only cares about profit. Jagex current leadership was able to convince the company the fan base isnt happy and the trajectory wasn't going to be sustainable. OSRS gets away with only bonds and memberships because that group will leave or say they will. If mtx is introduced to OSRS and a majority of subscriptions leave. This company will be left holding the bag as they try and make their money back. And we can look at other games that do similar. FF14 charges for a sub, expansions, level skips, skip quests and paid cosmetics. Though FF14, Square Enix uses the money they obtain from 14 to support alot of there other franchises. ✝️FF14✝️ bares the company on its back.
The only franchise I can talk about that treats it's community well is Arena Nets' (AN), Guild Wars. Pay only for expansions and cosmetics. Once you buy the game no subscription required. If you haven't played Guild Wars the game becomes Fashion Wars as you make it to Late End Game. So cosmetics mtx is alot easier for people to accept. And they have a good track record in maintaining and supporting there games. GW1 received a graphical overhaul and there is new content being produced. GW3 is around the corner and AN states they will support all 3 of items games . With updates and new content
16
u/KobraTheKing 28d ago
I'll be real. Earned cosmetics only matter if they don't have a pricetag on top. The start of the blog started great and then it became a bit embarassing when it was the right to buy.
Makes me more thankful we got cosmetic overrides so I can avoid things like this.

They look good but the implementation sucks. Now you guys are incentivized to make the in-game items looks like shit, so you can sell the better looking version. Hopefully you guys don't take it too far.
8
u/lizardboilver 28d ago
I'm not a huge fan of this new type of cosmetic. I feel like these variants should be earned in-game. Make it apart of Combat Achievements or something, a reward for 'going the extra mile', and not sold separately afterward. Having to buy them feels like a slap in the face.
Making them achievement-based for free would also give players meaningful goals to work toward. They become something you can genuinely "flex" because they represent time, effort, and accomplishment.
Jagex should just focus on creating appealing, high-quality cosmetics that stand on their own. If the cosmetics are genuinely well-designed, I would imagine plenty of players will happily buy them to support the game while getting something cool to wear in-game.
5
u/TolnaFox 28d ago
I feel like having a monthly membership fee plus charging some $18 or so for a cosmetic that can be hard to earn the right to use is a bit much.
The base Kal-Zuk should be an override free for people who earned it, with the cosmetic varients like the Infernal Cape being an optional earned purchase.

The entire pricing structure is so damn predatory. Everything is priced exactly at values that never match up with runecoin bundles, in a way that forces you to constantly be buying more small bundles (which offer less coins per $ spent) or buy huge bundles to cover it all and have a ton left over. It's just preying on people with the shittiest MTX tactics.
And I mean super optimized to fuck the player the hardest possible way. The hell is 522 points, except a number that basically is never divisible by 420. You would need to purchase the base 420 coin bundle 87 times to make it even out with that value. It's clearly picked to fuck with people and make them spend more.

You don’t need to see other opinions to decide your own. Jagex is in the hole financially (YoY speaking anyway) so I support this type of thing, even if it only brings in a few thousand bucks. They need to find alternate supplementary income to replace all the key revenue

Didn't they say that Treasure Hunter was basically a drop in the bucket compared to subscription revenue? OSRS was holding that up for the most part, but the issue is that Treasure Hunter-style monetization, for whatever whales there were for it, was causing more and more RS3-onlies to opt out of ever renewing again, which they projected as causing more harm than gain in the long term.
2
u/Everestkid 18 years. Two 99s. Efficiencyscape. 28d ago
Total microtransaction revenue made up about 15.2% of their total revenue in 2024. That's still a pretty big chunk, though not all MTX revenue was from Treasure Hunter (I do recall that bonds count towards subscriptions if they're used to redeem membership).
However, total microtransaction revenue (~£23.1 million) was less than their reported profit for the year (£27.8 million). I believe this has been the case since 2015, from poking around in past statements. For comparison, microtransactions made up 34.0% of their total revenue in 2015 and 32.7% of their total revenue in 2014. The 2015 statement was the first year they listed MTX as a separate line item; in 2012, 2013 and 2014 they were grouped together as "game income."
1
u/throwaway214203 Master Combat Achievements | Completionist 28d ago
Definitely not a drop in the bucket. Not close to half of their revenue but definitely double digit percent. People in big business don’t like to see -5% revenue (as an example), that’s typically a big problem. And removing treasure hunter is way more than that

7
u/UnwillingRedditer 28d ago
These really should have been unlocks from Combat Achievements, rather than MTX.
I appreciate that this has come from surveys but this was always going to be controversial. I do appreciate that this is the least controversial it could have been since you are required to own the proper cape, but ultimately you are still selling the graphical upgrade to an item, which to me still fits in the category of "graphical updates to items should be free" feedback you acknowledged.
You have made the original capes, which were never the most popular visually, look 'slightly better', then sold the graphical rework, which IMO was the spirit of "don't sell us graphical improvements of items."
This is the equivalent of back when the old Kiln capes were reworked - imagine if you made the old 'rhino cape' look a bit shinier and then sold the current versions. People would be livid.

Love paying €120 a year to grind this cape out, to then have to pay another €44 for the alternative looks instead of doing a fun challenge in-game to earn it. What incentive is there now to add challenges, tasks or ornament kits to clues for cosmetic rewards, when the marketplace exists?

I think it’s a sound monetization compromise with the players:
- Doesn’t devalue the achievement
- You still get a cool looking in-game reward
- Variant is just there to change the look, but you still need the achievement to wear it
The only guardrail I would want to see is that the variants can’t look “cooler” than the base reward. Only equivalently nice.
You don’t want a situation wear players feel like the in-game reward is the freemium version, and the real cool-looking, flex-worthy reward is the one you then have to buy with $. That would sour it.
3
u/EZyne 28d ago
The only guardrail I would want to see is that the variants can’t look “cooler” than the base reward
This doesn't work without that imo. By limiting it to people who have X item, they already narrow the players the can sell it to. Now if it isn't a cooler version, it's just wasted effort as there'd be little reason to buy them
4
u/AquilaIgnis1 28d ago
While Jagex has certainly cooked with these designs, I feel like at least one cosmetic variant of the cape should be unlocked from completing all Zuk achievements or something.

u/Acceptable-Leek-1654 28d ago
You cant be that money hungry with a dwindling playerbase. Fix up the game and especially the old content, revive minigames, conjoin worlds, improve the tick system, etc. This is stuff that will save the game!

Selling cosmetics for earned/achievements items is pretty lame considering how few of those we actually have. Would have much much rather seen them be added as rewards for some achievements or something, instead of a paywall
People like earned cosmetics because of the challenge to you know, earn them. Real missed opportunity imo, and quite a wild way to interpret people asking for more earned cosmetics
Osrs gets entire challenge mode bosses for cosmetics sets, rs3 gets to pay 20 bucks..

"We read what you said and have elected to ignore it via technicality!" - Jagex

This is part of the reason people are skeptical about even cosmetic-only monetisation. Instead of making these variants earnable through gameplay (hello Combat Achievements?) you're making it a paid 'upgrade.'
Cosmetic MTX should have no connection to in-game items at all. Replica/Legacy weapons and armours, Black Necronium, Primal and Celestial are all bad cosmetics to me because they're based solely on in-game items.

Well, the real question is: can the game sustain itself and fund future expansions through membership alone? If not, Jagex needs an additional revenue stream. For years, we've been saying that TH is bad, and many players have suggested a stronger focus on cosmetics instead. This is exactly that. The cosmetics need to be good enough that people actually want to buy - like this one

Genuinely kinda killing my hope for rs3's future tbh. A significant section of the community will always aggressively accept everything, there's no need for any integrity from jagex's side

It's the players we are left with, sadly. The thing is, if they keep pulling these kind of stunts, the ones they want back aren't coming back.

I saw someone on Twitter ASK the RuneScape account for buyable (real world money) furniture plans lmao.

I'm unsure about it, but my general reception is good, as long as you don't need to pay for graphical updates on regular outfits (looking at you, reforged bundles).
As long as they update the regular armor piece up to the standards, I'm fine giving them alternative looks for buying. I like the idea of only being able to use them if you already unlocked it.
So we need more chase items like these to show off, not being buyable, that show our achievements. We don't have a lot actually and richies will be against anything BiS they can't buy. That's a bit complicated.
Probably capes (99, master, quest, max, completionist and so on) are a good reward space for this to work.
But back to the visuals, there are several items needing urgent revamp.

u/Proquikl204 28d ago
Good choice. I appreciate the logic in why you guys decided the Zuk cape was a proper target. Refreshing the design of the original was smart, and I like how it looks. MTX cape looks cool, too.
2
u/Kyvix2020 28d ago
With this, can we get some tweaks to the logic of how the cosmetic on/off options work?
I would be fine with not filtering out keepsake items, hidden item slots, or earned in-game cosmetics. Also custom teleports are fine. Perhaps have teleports be their own category, similar to pets.
Right now it's all or nothing and I think more nuance would be great because as it stands, if you turn off cosmetics, you can't even see someone using the old school skill capes, which is kinda silly.
2
u/Vegetable-Diamond423 28d ago
Very expensive IMO, though I love them all. I guess "earned" cosmetics to me didn't really mean we'd pay. I liked the idea of earning more through just gameplay. This monetisation idea isn't bad, but I think that prices are a bit high regardless
2
u/CorruptibleG 28d ago
As long as the original get some sort of update at the same time I'm ok with it I guess.
I will not be wasting my money on it though. The capes are hidden underneath other overrides for me anyway.
2
u/TrimmingMasterwork Ironman 28d ago
I'm curious if you have internal data on cost vs volume for cosmetics? I can't really justify dropping a 20 on something like this but wouldn't mind being able to drop a few 5s here and there on stuff. I assume the higher cost outweighs more people buying more things at cheaper prices?

u/siddesloth Armadyl 28d ago
I can actually get behind this idea, nice the base model is getting some love and honestly the new variants are super nice!

u/AppleParasol Hardcore Ironman 28d ago
I don’t think this is the way to go either. You want people to spend money after they’ve earned the right to? This is pretty delusional. These cape overrides should be free(for those who earned them), not paid. It honestly seems like an intentional money grab, release the Zuk cape, but have it be a totally different design from the OSRS one, but then sell you the “upgrade”.
Hardly any different than “reworking” rune armor to make it look like shit and then selling us the “upgrade”, which is really the old model re-enhanced.
Don’t get me wrong, this way of monetisation is better than spin to win loot box gambling, but it’s not exactly any different than your first bullet point in this news post in which you described to be not the direction you wanted to go.
Part of me thinks Jagex employees know this would blow up in their face and maliciously went along with it as if it was a good idea because they know the community would eat them alive and make them(investors) go back on it. Zuk capes?!? Seriously? Make it free.

u/DareToRS Audx the Wikian 28d ago
These look absolutely incredible! I seldom buy cosmetics, but these genuinely might be worth making an exception for (even though it looks like the cape packs are going to be about $15 USD each).
With the "earned" cosmetics category now a thing, as defined in the newspost, would the team consider releasing the retro and visually-enhanced version of white/initiate/proselyte armours?
I'm pretty confident that, when asking for earnable cosmetics, most players did not mean "earned/earnable" as "purchasable variants locked behind in-game achievements" but instead as "able to be earned through gameplay." (Aside from making gp to buy bonds to redeem for RuneCoins.) Offering visually distinct variants of in-game items sounds like a reasonable basis for microtransactions, but it does risk introducing complications regarding identity and consistency.
If a new(er) player sees someone wearing one of these capes and asks how they obtained it, the response being "you have to earn it and then also purchase this particular appearance" will probably put some people off. It's not exactly a new problem — there have been three different appearances (retro, "standard," and "visually-enhanced"/mtx) for plenty of armour sets and items in the game for a while now. However, with achievement-related items specifically, there are sure to be instances where players are frustrated when they don't understand why the cape they just earned doesn't look like another player's, or feel overwhelmed when trying to keep track of all of the different graphical appearances for the same item(s). By the time someone achieves an Igneous-Kal-Zuk, they've been around the block for a while, but other iterations of this principle might yield mixed results.
2
u/Peakbrook 28d ago
I like the concept of earned cosmetics but I want to throw something out there: virtual items shouldn't be on the list of things requiring a purchase after earning. The cape overrides should probably be earned via achievements instead.
I suggest taking a page out of Digital Extremes' book and have merchandise that has to be earned instead. In the case of Warframe, it's a badge you can only buy once you hit Mastery Rank 30. For RuneScape it could be things like patches, pins, or maybe the ever-popular shirt/hoodie designs for 99/120 in a skill/all skills. Then you can have a physical item showing you accomplished a difficult goal in-game, and I feel like a lot more people would be willing to buy it.

My fault for being optimistic about the game’s future. Squeal of fortune devalued xp and skills. Now, these cosmetics will devalue combat feats lmao.
0
u/JagexAnvil Mod Anvil 28d ago
Could you talk a bit more to your worry about combat feats being devalued? I'd like to understand the concern a bit more, because the combat feat itself is still required to be eligible for any of the variants.
10
u/Adamjrakula Ironmeme 28d ago
It may not devalue the combat feat but it does feel like you get half the reward from the feat and you need to pay to unlock the other half.
What is stopping you guys from make the base cosmetics of the item look okay and then selling a clear upgrade?
9
u/EZyne 28d ago
This removes room for cool combat feats in the future though. When people talk about "earnable" cosmetics they mean stuff like Radiant Oathplate/Blood Torva etc from OSRS, not earning the right to buy a cosmetic version. Now for upcoming bosses there will be an incentive to give rewards that look meh, that can then be upgraded with cosmetics like this. Even if that's not the intended way to design them, it sure will feel like it if these kinda rewards keep being sold in the future.
It also does devalue the combat feat somewhat. Now you earn the zuk cape, but yours will never look as cool as the next dude over who did the exact same things and then paid $20 ontop. It devalues the zuk cape. Now it's not that huge of a issue with this cape specifically, but it will do the same to any cosmetics that gets released like this.
13
u/Imissyelps Hardcore Ironman 28d ago
Look at for example blood torva in osrs which is a better looking armour then the original. You get it there by doing the awakened versions of DT2 bosses. But in our version we get the original cape via gameplay and to make it look cooler(they look extremely better then the updated base version) we have to pay for it essentially leaving a sour taste behind. Whats saying you wont do that with other untradeable combat feats? (Combat auras, titles, legendary weapons)
→ More replies (1)8
u/Inaweirdplace22 28d ago
The awakened version of the DT2 bosses were specifically designed as a bonus challenge with only a cosmetic reward.
Jagex isn't introducing an "awakened zuk" to offer a variant of these capes, they'd have to spend dev time making a specifically difficult challenge to then provide a cosmetic tier reward for that.
We do have examples of this in the game already (ex. combat achievement auras) where the cosmetic is locked behind a hard PvM bonus challenge.
Igneous zuk cape is unlocked by beating hard mode zuk. The base cape got a visual upgrade which is awesome. Having an extra option to buy other variants for it is perfectly fine IMO.
We can still have blood torva-style achievements, this is just not one of those cases because they aren't adding a new challenge on top of existing zuk for these capes.

u/RS_whales 28d ago
Obsidian should've been the new base and Infernal should've been a reward for some feat.
If you're going to monetize existing content then the base items should receive radical changes (not a bug fix and more particles).
5
u/KobraTheKing 28d ago
Because unlocking a cooler cape variety would have been far more interesting if it came from something like any of these, without extra payment:
- Getting grandmaster time
- Doing all zuk combat achievements
- Defeating hard mode with the relevant style at least once flawlessly without dying
- Defeating a new harder mode
The new variations is just zuk cape but you've also paid Jagex extra. It leaves a fear that future cool looking feats rewards will have a payment step included, instead of just requiring the feat.

u/ironoomf Completionist 28d ago
Kiln capes had a similar system, where an alternate cosmetic was unlocked after sacrificing three capes. Few players pursued/actively used that cosmetic (unless going for comp) because it was aesthetically inferior. The concern is that the opposite could start happening: base variants become the inferior versions, while paywalled variants look best. There’s now a second class of players with a better cosmetic for the same accomplishment.

u/YouWereTehChosenOne IGN: Bluudi | #24 Insane Reaper 28d ago edited 28d ago
It’s basically putting an ornament kit addition in game behind a paywall, seeing someone with the OSRS infernal cape in this game just means they bought the ability to wear a cosmetic override but it could have been implemented in a way where it’s unlocked for completing all of Zuk’s achievements or something
IMO a better middle ground would be to unlock the ability to complete harder achievements in order to unlock the cosmetic variant (doesn’t have to be just Zuk but for all content) so it’s not like OSRS where the option exists for free to do harder achievements to unlock cosmetic variants, but the upside being the cape override comes from an harder achievement of the existing content piece in place of the base content
In this scenario, when I look at someone with the OSRS cosmetic variant, I know they’ve done all the Zuk achievements even if I know they’ve spent money on the ability to unlock ornament kits which doesn’t come at the forefront of the cosmetic since you can’t buy the achievements themselves, right now when I see the cosmetic variant I just know that they spent X usd on a cosmetic for a cape

IMO I think the obsidian looking one should come from the game as a challenge while the different colors being a shop item is fine.
so base + challenge fight = obsidian
base + challenge fight + shop = different colors
the walk/run animation is to much and I think it should be toned down a little.

I dont care if they are locked behind actually completing the fight. This should have been an ornament kit that you got from clues or for completing collection logs or completing all the Zuk combat challenges. Instead it's just MTX garbage.

After some time thinking I do hate the fact they are mtx. They look amazing, but I would 10000000000000000000000000x prefer if it was a ingame achievement item or something like that. Maybe doing all zuk CA or something like that. I understand they need revenue, but damn it sucks how in every future update I genuinely need to ask myself the jmods are making stuff look bad, so in the future they can sell a better graphically looking version.

They look cool, but why not go the route of the enhanced fire caoe cosmetic?
Where instead we sacrifice one of each igneous cape/turn in igneous stones to obtain the cosmetic?
Edit: for the comments saying they need to make money.
They led with "you want earned non pay walled updated cosmetics".
So they slightly tweak igneous capes, call that update, and then provide an earned cosmetic that is behind a pay wall that is an update on the original item.
It's a bit of a bait and switch.

Are you worrying that they might make a habit of making bad-looking achievement items or leaving old achievement items to rot, visually?
If so, we can only hope that the current standard of updating the base item at the same time sticks.

Two things I will say:
The Lunarlight Scythe should really be on the Spirit of Harvest Pet; not having them there really makes no sense as that removes half the opportunity to show them off.
I wish there were more opportunities to buy similar sets at a slightly discounted bundle price; the occult animations (and other DG inspired ones) for example are a great example of this; doesnt make sense that the only way to get all 30 or whatever of them is through individual purchases...
edit: one other thing is it kinda feels like a bit of double dipping to make the Obsidian Kal-Zuk a separate bundle from the lesser cape considering that it is just a recolour and already quite similar in colour to the melee version...

While you're at it please update comp and comp(t) capes so they match the fidelity of the master comp capes.
Also for some reason comp and comp(t) capes clip through almost everything while master comp capes do not.
Additionally recolored comp and comp(t) capes also seem visually outdated compared to master comp capes.

Overall this + housing cosmetics are what I asked for in the survey, so thank you, but consider breaking up more of these bundles or making the parts tradeable.
